Disneytoon-cember Part 19: Teacher’s Pet

Boy you guys aren’t going to like me for this. Teacher’s Pet was not a bad show but it was a show I never really cared about growing up and even as an adult I still don’t care for this show. The shows premise is that it focuses on an intelligent talking dog named Spot who wants to go to school so he dresses himself as a human child and starts attending school as the genius known as Scott. His owner another kid who goes to the same school finds out about this and is totally okay with the fact that his dog can talk and is okay going to school with him. It’s a pretty silly and weird premise but it got a lot of laughs out of people.

The show pretty much just follows the school life of Spot and his owner who are the exact opposites of each other. Spot is smart, clever, and popular and gives those awe-inspiring speeches and song numbers while his owner Leonard is considered the class loser and is always embarrassed by his mom who just happens to be his teacher so he gets nervous in class and can’t answer questions correctly. The stories and themes of the show were basic as an pretty much everyone at the time was doing the same stories and themes as them. This wasn’t a bad thing, as long they told it in a way that was clever and created it’ll stick with the viewer more but in my opinion other shows did these stories and lessons better. I also wasn’t a fan of the music numbers in the show. They really felt unnecessary and just came out of nowhere at times. Now there were a few good things in the show. For starters the voice acting for this show was amazing. Nathan Lane does an amazing job voicing Spot and gives this character a zany and likable personality. David Ogden Stiers and Jerry Stiller are both funny as the comedic side characters of Mr. Jolly the cat and Pretty Boy the pet canary. And props to Debra Jo Rupp who pulls double duty voicing Leonard’s mom in this show while also playing Kitty on That’s 70’s Show. Mr. Jolly and Pretty Boy were honestly my favorite characters as they usually got the most laughs out of me. Mr. Jolly was a neurotic house cat and Pretty Boy was the streetwise tough bird. The two worked off each other perfectly and whenever they were on screen you were guaranteed to laugh. Honestly, I wish the show was about them and their adventures. Teacher’s Pet was a show that a lot of people liked but I just never really cared for this show. I didn’t really get into the show’s story, I felt that the themes they presented were being done better by other shows at the time and other shows had better more creative stories. Sorry guys, just didn’t care for this show.
