Nitsujcember Part 10: Fairy Tail: The Phoenix Priestess

Fairy Tail was riding a wave of popularity with its manga and with the anime coming to an end I felt it only made sense to look at the series so I went out and watched Fairy Tail’s first movie The Phoenix Priestess. In the movie Natsu and the others meet a girl named Éclair whose part of this ancient tribe that controlled the phoenix. The prince of some kingdom now wants that power to control the phoenix to prove his superiority to everyone.

The story is pretty basic, bad guy wants to do this and our heroes have to stop him. Surprisingly, this story feels like a filler arc in the anime. It’s not bad, it’s decent, it has a good level of mystery to it, plenty of action, decent suspense, and all the characters we love are there and maintain their personalities from the show. The villains aren’t all that interesting or threatening which is kind of a shocking because usually the villains in Fairy Tail are pretty well written. In fact, they’re usually the best part of the arc. I do regret not focusing on Éclair that much in the review. So how is she? Well she’s not really all that good. They really don’t develop her character all that well in the movie. I never really found myself getting emotionally attached to her she’s just there as a plot device. You know she’s a part of the story but you won’t find yourself all that invested in her. If I was reviewing the anime today I give either a 6 or a 6.5. For its first movie it’s okay and watchable but not really all that memorable and I’m kind of surprise they haven’t made a second movie yet.
