Project #165: Sailor Moon Crystal Part 1

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Let’s talk about Sailor Moon. Ah~, Sailor Moon, one of the first animes I’ve ever seen in my life. Based off the popular manga written by the legendary Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Moon holds a special place to Dragonball Z in the anime hall of fame. Much like how Dragonball Z was the anime for boys in the 90s, Sailor Moon was the anime for girls in the 90s. It was a series that made everything a girl ever dreamt about come to life. We had an everyday girl who finds out she’s a princess, saves the world from evil, and gets the hot boy in the end. It’s safe to say that without Sailor Moon I think a lot of girls may not have gotten into anime. Even today despite the anime series being about 25 years old we still talk about it and many people still watch and read this series today. It’s an iconic series that serves as one of the pillars for anime/manga and will continue to exist and be remembered for years to come. So when Toei Animation (One Piece, Dragonball Z, and Sailor Moon) announced they were rebooting the Sailor Moon series in 2014 fans were excited. We were finally going to see a true interpretation of the series without all that filler and relive our childhoods remembering why we love this anime so much and why it means so much to us. Did this series meet or surpass our expectations? Let’s find out. This is Sailor Moon Crystal.

Opening and Ending Theme

The opening for this anime is “Moon Pride” by Momoiro Clover Z. It’s not really a good song. I found the song to be bland and forgetful. It doesn’t leave much of an impact on me and it sounds like it was phoned-in at the last minute. The song from the original anime was a lot better. While not really being an innovated song the beat was catchy and memorable and the lyrics were easy to remember. You could actually hum them in your head while going about your daily routine. This song on the other hand. I honestly didn’t care about it. The ending is “Moon Rainbow” by Momoiro Clover Z once again. It’s a romantic ending and slightly better than the opening but it’s still forgettable and bland. While the singer sounds great I find myself more interested in the animation than the actual song which shouldn’t happen.

Episodes 1-5

So the anime of nostalgia begins in the cosmos of space (insert obvious Star Wars or Star Trek joke around here) where we reach Earth and see our main character Usagi waking up late rushing out so as not to be late for school. She’s voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi the original voice actor of Sailor Moon so props to the creators of the anime for bringing back one of the original cast members. As she’s rushing to school she accidently steps over a black cat who has moon-crest on its forehead (geez I wonder how significant this cat will be in the story?) which causes her to be late for school and she has to stand in the hallway to reflect on her actions (I never really got this punishment. It’s bad enough that she’s late but how does having her stand in the hallway and miss class going to teach her a lesson? If anything it’s almost like giving her a free period. If you really wanted to punish her, have her hold out two buckets filled with water in each hand for 10 minutes. That’ll teach her a lesson). After school Usagi goes to her best friend Molly’s (Naru: It’s Naru. (Nitsuj): Sorry) family store to look at jewelry since they’re having a sale. She doesn’t see anything she likes so she heads home where her mom finds out she flunked her last exam (you failure) and gets her kicked out of the house but eventually lets her back in (too lenient. If I failed my exam that would have been a good yelling followed by being grounded or getting a good whooping). Once she goes to her room the black cat that she stepped on earlier approaches her revealing that she can talk and is called Luna voiced by Ryou Hirohashi (Tails from Sonic X). Luna gives Usagi a broach telling Usagi that there’s an evil force in Tokyo and it’s her job to defeat the evil, find her allies, and save Luna’s princess (and fall love, balance school life, and the life of an adolescent 14 year-old whose interest is finding hot boys to put on her who I want to do it with list). Once Usagi has the broach we get the moment we’ve all been waiting for and see that awesome transformation scene (scene here: //youtu.be/sBaMV3L7GfA, holy shit was I on acid or was that the flashiest transformation in the history of anime?). After the transformation, Sailor Moon’s senses go off (my sailor senses are tingling) telling her that Molly (Naru: It’s Naru. (Nitsuj): Oops) is under attack and she rushes to save her. Once at the jewelry shop we see that Molly’s (Naru: It’s Naru. (Nitsuj): Whatever) mother has been replaced with a monster woman sent from the Negaverse (or Negaforce or Dark Kingdom depending on which version of the show you watched) to find the Legendary Silver Crystal and to do this she has taken over the jewelry store and given all the ladies jewels that feed off of human energy (and they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend). Sailor Moon appears on the scene and has no idea what the hell she’s doing (are you sure this is the right girl Luna?) as she’s being chased by a hoard of energy-drained women (shall I recharge you ladies?) but after using a super sonicwave to confuse the enemy she uses her tiara to kill the monster and get back the stolen energy saving everyone including Molly (Naru: It’s Naru. (Nitsuj): I don’t care).

Episode 2 establishes the newest member of the team Ami aka Sailor Mercury the brains of the team voiced by Hisako Kanemoto. In the episode we see that Ami is a new transfer student to Usagi’s school and because of her high IQ she is ostracized by everyone (seriously, nobody wants to approach the cute and intelligent blue-haired girl? Japan). Usagi approaches her and the two develop a friendship. While that’s going on Queen Beryl voiced by Misa Watanabe (Vivi from One Piece) and leader of the Dark Kingdom has ordered Jedite one of her 4 generals to find the Silver Crystal and gather more human energy. In order to do this Jedite summons a monster and has it create Crystal Seminar an after school class which educates smart people but what it’s really doing is gathering their energy (after school classes are EVIL~). Ami goes to this seminar where she gets her energy drained and becomes a zombie obsessed with studying (you broke Ami you sons of bitches). Usagi gets her hands on one of Crystal Seminar’s disc and discovers that the disc is really a brainwashing program created by the Dark Kingdom (this looks like a job for. . .Sailor Moon). Usagi and Luna sneak into the seminar to save Ami where the monster proves to be too much for Sailor Moon (and by too much I mean Usagi has no idea what to do and just cowers in the corner and runs away crying) but once Ami sees her friend in danger she awakens the sailor scout in her and becomes Sailor Mercury the scout of love and intelligence (scene here: //youtu.be/K00QTq9rFZw, what is this? You give Sailor Moon an over the top transformation scene and Mercury just gets this? Oh screw you Toei). Mercury uses her powers to create a mist that covers the room and Sailor Moon gets saved by that tuxedo guy who drives the girls crazy Tuxedo Mask voiced by Kenji Nojima (Yuuto from Highschool DxD). Now freed Sailor Moon takes her tiara and destroys the monster ending Crystal Seminar once and for all. We end the episode with Usagi and Luna welcoming Ami to the team and vowing to stay friends.

Episode 3 introduces us to fan favorite Rei aka Sailor Mars who is often consider by many to be the hottest of the sailor scouts. She’s voiced by Rina Satou (Negi from the Mahou Sensei Negima series). In the episode Usagi and Ami are riding on the train where they spot Rei and Usagi is drawn to her because she’s so pretty (scene here: //youtu.be/kDLQyoQhrHc, she’s not the only one attracted to her, and who knew Usagi was bi-curious. Suddenly she’s a little hotter now). Usagi follows her back to her family shrine where we see that in this version of the show instead of Rei being somewhat mean and a bit tsundere she’s actually quite nice and gentle. She’s nice to Usagi and she often plays with the local children who are waiting for the bus ride home (I don’t know, I’m not quite sure I like this big sister feel she’s giving off. I kinda liked her fiery side more). We also find out that because of her strong spiritual powers the local mothers aren’t too fond of her and think she’s strange. When one of the local kids along with a few other kids go missing parents start to think Rei is responsible but Usagi defends her (yeah! Rei wouldn’t do that, she’s too cute). Rei decides to use her powers to see if she can find the missing children and instead sees a vision of Usagi getting kidnapped by Jedite. She rushes out of the shrine to look for Usagi only to arrive at the bus stop where the bus driver is Jedite who’s responsible for kidnapping all of the children (haha it’s like that one episode from the first anime only with crappy animation and a few changes). He knocks out Rei and puts her on the bus which drives by Usagi who sees Rei and transforms into a flight attendant (why? (Isis): The better question is why are you questioning the obvious fanservice?), grabs the bus, and gets transported to another dimension. Pinpointing her transformation power Luna and Ami are able to go to the dimension and join Usagi. As Jedite is looking at all the people he’s captured he discovers he has a strange attraction to Rei even though he’s never met her or talk to her at all (we call that lust, it’s quite common in men and since you’re looking at Mars you’re gonna feel a lot of it). Sailor Moon and Mercury confront Jedite where we find out that this was all a trap to get the sailor scouts to come out so he could destroy them (you know we have this thing called the media. Try using it). Jedite is about to destroy the scouts but Rei steps up and after receiving a pen from Luna (that mysteriously came out of nowhere) she transforms into Sailor Mars giving us the best transformation scene so far in the anime. With Mars’ help the scouts are able to defeat Jedite and return everyone back to their families (scene here: //youtu.be/lghV2y6_itM, damn those are some good legs. Almost got me to drool a little bit).

In episode 4 Princess D from the Kingdom of D (from the D nation which resides in the country of D on the continent of D) has come to Japan to reveal the kingdom’s greatest treasure (hopefully the D doesn’t stand for what I think otherwise this treasure is going to be quite disturbing). Luna and the scouts believe this might be the Silver Crystal so Usagi uses her pen to transform into a princess to infiltrate the party with Ami and Rei by her side. Once inside Usagi gets distracted by the masquerade dance and dances with Tuxedo Mask where she feels his warmth coursing through his hands (that’s not his warmth that’s just you having perverted thoughts). Back on Ami and Rei’s side they follow Princess D to her chamber where Nephrite uses his shadow to possess Princess D and steal the kingdom’s treasure. Ami and Rei transform into Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars (yay the legs are back) and begin chasing her through the mansion (*Benny Hill theme begins to play*) where Usagi transforms and joins them and as an added bonus she gets a new tiara (this one fires lasers) thanks to the warmth she felt from Tuxedo Mask. With the new tiara Sailor Moon exorcises Nephrite’s shadow from Princess D saving her and we find out that the kingdom’s treasure is just a 200-karat diamond sculpted in the image of the first princess and not the Silver Crystal. As Sailor Moon is sleeping on a bench outside Tuxedo Mask approaches her and kisses her (you do know she’s underage right? I don’t care how handsome you are you can still go to jail). Luna sees this and tells Tuxedo Mask to stay away from Sailor Moon because she doesn’t trust him (how can you not trust this guy he saved her like 3 times already?).

Episode 5 is the long awaited introduction to Makoto aka Sailor Jupiter another popular character with fans believing she’s the hottest of all the characters in the show. She’s voiced by the badass female herself Ami Koshimizu (Ryuko from Kill La Kill) who I have to admit is a good fit for this character. Makoto is a strong and independent girl who can take care of herself but at the same time she’s cute and has the heart of a young maiden. Anyway, the episode starts off with Usagi walking to school in the rain not paying attention and about to get hit by a car (like a deer staring directly into headlights) where she gets saved by Makoto (or as I like to call her the Supergirl of Japan). Usagi soon finds out that Makoto is a new transfer student at her school and isn’t welcomed at all because everyone is afraid of her (why, is she too cute for you guys or something?). Usagi approaches and develops a friendship with her showing her around and introducing her to the arcade hottie Motoki who Makoto says bears a striking resemblance to Makoto’s senpai and crush from her old school. While Usagi and Makoto are having fun a rumor has been going around that a bridal shop has a ghost in it where one of the mannequins comes to life at night snatching up all of the potential grooms it can find and draining their energy. Ami doesn’t believe in such things as ghosts (right, just like an intergalactic war didn’t start on the moon) but Luna says they should investigate this rumor. That night as Motoki is closing up shop the ghost bride appears before him (oh he’s not even getting married, yet) and hypnotizes him to capture Makoto. Tuxedo Mask sees this and instead of stopping the villain himself he instead goes to Usagi’s house, wakes her up, and has her follow him to Makoto (he’s kinda lazy and complicated like that). Usagi and the others arrive onto the scene and transform into the sailor scouts to fight the monster where the monster proves too much for them but Makoto fights back against it and becomes the electrifying sailor scout Sailor Jupiter (scene here: //youtu.be/Q_EwP7LA8R4, bring the thunder). Using her power over thunder Sailor Jupiter easily defeats the ghost bride and saves everyone. We end the episode with Luna giving Sailor Moon the Lunar Wand making her the official leader of the group.

Episodes 6-9

In episode 6 everyone’s got the fever the Silver Crystal fever. Everyone wants the crystal (yes you pretty much spent like one episode dedicated to finding it. Are we doing that again?) for its enormous powers especially Tuxedo Mask and the Dark Kingdom. Zoisite dresses in drag and poses as a researcher of crystals to go on TV and hypnotize the entire city (kill your family. Kill your family) to make them obsessed with finding the Silver Crystal for him while also collecting human energy in the process (killing two birds with one stone). Luna gathers the scouts at the arcade and leads them to a secret base underneath it (why didn’t you show them this earlier?) where they locate the source of the hypno beam at the TV station (which should have been obvious from the beginning if you stopped to think about it). Luna once again tells the group not to trust Tuxedo Mask but Usagi speaks up for him and runs out on them (you are seriously doing this now? The town is in danger and you’re running out on us because a cat doesn’t trust a boy you have crush on? This is our heroine everyone). She bumps into Tuxedo Mask where he apologizes for the mess he’s caused in the city (well you should be damn it) and tells Usagi that he knows she’s Sailor Moon (what gave it away? The hairstyle, eye color, voice, the obvious fact that she doesn’t wear a mask? The possibilities are endless). Back with the other scouts they face off against Zoisite where they’re no match for him (how? How could he overcome the powers of Mars’ legs? Those things could distract any man). Queen Beryl comes in to finish them off but Sailor Moon comes in to save them using the power of the Lunar Wand to knock out Zoisite forcing Queen Beryl to retreat and return the entire city back to normal. She exhausts all her energy and gets picked up by Tuxedo Mask where he kisses her (still underage man) and carries her back to his place (you know this is kidnapping? I could seriously throw you in jail? You know that right?). She wakes up the next morning in a bed with a broken pocket watch that shows the phases of the moon and sees Mamoru who she believes is Tuxedo Mask (she is correct. First time for everything).

In episode 7 Usagi quickly pieces together that Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask (noo~ really?). How did she figure this out you ask? Well it helps that Mamoru keeps his Tuxedo Mask outfit out in the open for everyone to see (yeah not his smartest moment). He opens up to Usagi about his past which we all know, he lost his parents as well as his memories in an accident with the only way able to get them back is to find the Silver Crystal. After hearing the story Usagi takes her leave promising not to tell the others what she heard (she’s claiming a monopoly on him) taking the broken pocket watch by accident while Mamoru keeps her handkerchief and sniffs it when he’s alone and thinking of her (word of advice Usagi you’re not gonna want that handkerchief back). Back in the Dark Kingdom Queen Beryl believes that Sailor Moon might hold the key to finding the Silver Crystal so she orders Zoisite to find and capture Sailor Moon (um how did you come to that conclusion? I mean this seriously just happens out of nowhere. There’s no lead in to this or any discussion she just came to this conclusion on her own out of nowhere. This confuses me). He opens up a video store called Rental Shop Dark (oh they’re not even trying anymore) where he brainwashes everyone who buys a video to find and capture Sailor Moon (and collect human energy along the way). Within a matter of days everyone in the city becomes brainwashed and obsessed with finding Sailor Moon (oh no it’s RE4 all over again) that Usagi has no choice but to transform and save everyone falling directly into Zoisite’s trap to capture her. He easily captures her from behind (surprise butt sex) and takes out the other scouts easily (man you guys are terrible today). Tuxedo Mask comes in throwing a punch (woah what happen to the rose? This is new I like it) where he confesses that his new wish is to be with Usagi the person he loves (AI girls: Awww~. (Nitsuj): Oh this is so mushy). Zoisite has seen enough of the lovefest and decides to kill Usagi with a giant crystal (oh the irony) only to be saved by the last sailor scout Sailor Venus (7 episodes and the gang’s all here, not bad. Big improvement over the other anime).

Episode 8 starts by introducing us to Sailor Venus aka Minako aka Sailor V, Usagi’s hero. She’s voiced by the VA seductress herself Shizuka Itou (Akeno from Highschool DxD). Zoisite retreats realizing he’s outnumbered and injured (hasn’t stopped you from fighting them in the past so why let it stop you now?) and Artemis the white cat voiced by Youhei Oobayashi comes in to tell everyone that Sailor Venus is Princess Serenity the princess of the Moon Kingdom and the one they’ve been searching for all this time (yeah I’m pretty sure he’s lying). They return back to their base (the Moon Cave if you will) where Minako explains that she has the Silver Crystal in a safe place but won’t tell the others out of safety and caution (I’m sensing a lack of trust Minako) and tells them how the Dark Kingdom is responsible for destroying the Moon Kingdom and their leader is planning on conquering Earth (yeah I think we all kinda figured that out from the get go). Usagi and the others promise to protect her from now on and they all go home where Minako tells Artemis that the forgotten memories of the others will return soon (and when that happens. . .Oh Lordy). The next morning Usagi has another dream about the Moon Kingdom where she’s being protected by some guy who looks like Tuxedo Mask (ominous foreshadowing) and heads out to school where she runs into Mamoru in the park who’s afraid to make eye contact with her because he failed to protect her yesterday (what are you on about you punched Zoisite in the face) but she says it’s okay and tries to return his pocket watch that she took by mistake (she was originally trying to steal his towel to smell his scent but got cold feet and took the watch by mistake). He says that she can keep it for now since he has her handkerchief and that the next time they meet they’ll exchange the items. Back in the Dark Kingdom Kunzite threatens to destroy Tokyo unless Minako comes to face him in the Tokyo Tower (you can destroy Tokyo with just one shot!? Why didn’t you do this in the first place? (Seras): He had to build up suspense and excitement? (Nitsuj): //youtu.be/59GwT_Qlj0Y). She goes to the tower alone not telling the others believing that this is her burden to carry alone and transforms into Sailor Venus where she fights Kunzite and gets overpowered after one attack (you couldn’t even last a minute. Just like all the other princesses out there). The others come in to save her where Sailor Moon gets knocked off the tower and gets saved by Tuxedo Mask where she kisses him (woah talk about daring. I like this Sailor Moon, she knows what she wants) and returns to the fight. Kunzite has the others cornered and Sailor Moon jumps in front of his attack to take the hit (what was your plan again because this seems a little stupid?) where out of nowhere Tuxedo Mask comes to take the hit in order to protect her.

At the start of episode 9 Tuxedo Mask dies (this is that awkward moment where the prince ironically becomes the damsel in distress). As he’s dying he begins to remember his past and finds out his real name is Endymion, the first Prince of Earth (didn’t know the Earth was under monarch rule). As the love of her life dies in her hands Sailor Moon cries out and transforms into Princess Serenity the Princess of the Moon and the person the scouts have been looking for this whole time (woah! You mean to tell me the scout who has Moon in her title was the Moon Princess this whole time, //youtu.be/kdhhQhqi_AE). She begins to remember her past and how they fell in love which is a big taboo according to law but they did it anyway (screw the rules we have love). This somehow led to a war between the citizens of Earth and the Moon Kingdom with Earth wanting to take over the Moon and steal the Silver Crystal (damn this escalated quickly, a little backstory never hurt anyone guys). Tuxedo Mask tried to stop them but he got killed while protecting Serenity from an attack (man he died twice protecting this girl. I think it’s best for your health to find a new girl bro). Back in the present as Sailor Moon cries over Tuxedo Mask’s dead body her tears give birth to the Silver Crystal (//youtu.be/qxqm6htwcwk, you mean to tell me all this whole time we could of just made this girl cry and everything would have been solved!? That’s really messed up anime) where she puts the light of the crystal in Tuxedo Mask’s body in the hopes of saving him but Queen Beryl shows up and captures the unconscious Tuxedo Mask taking him back to the Dark Kingdom. They all retreat back to the Sailor Cave (yes I’m calling it that now deal with it) where Sailor Venus explains that she’s actually the leader of the Guardians who was pretending to be the princess to protect Sailor Moon (well look how that worked out. Also, if you knew Sailor Moon was the princess this whole time why haven’t you’ve been protecting her in the previous episodes? You’re practically giving her to the enemies). Artemis goes on to explain that in the past all of the scouts were guardians of the Moon Kingdom who fought bravely and gave their lives to seal away the evil entity that brainwashed the people of Earth to attack the Moon. After sealing away the evil the Moon Kingdom fell and the girls along with Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask were reincarnated on Earth while Luna and Artemis went into a hibernating state only to wake up on Earth with the mission of finding the scouts and the princess (man when you say it out loud it all just sounds so needlessly complicated. I’m not saying the thought of reincarnating them on Earth is complicated I’m just saying the idea of reincarnating them on Earth with no memories of their past life and leaving it up to a bunch of talking cats to fill them in on what’s going on is needlessly complicated). Feeling depressed about losing Tuxedo Mask to the forces of darkness Sailor Moon locks herself in her room for what I assume a few days until the gang decides to go over and cheer her up where they see that her hair has grown incredibly long because her memories have returned and her body is adjusting itself (so remembering your past makes your hair grow longer? Did the remaining logic of this show just go flying out the window or something?). They fix her hair and she starts to have a panic attack remembering what happened yesterday (don’t worry they won’t kill him. Once Beryl realizes she has a hot unconscious boy in front of her killing him will be the last thing on her mind. Unless she gets bored with him quickly or runs him dry) but they get her to calm down and tell her she doesn’t have to be or act like a princess just be her regular self (that seems to be the popular thing among girls these days). After that Luna tells them that if they go to the moon they might find some answers on what to do next.

Episodes 10-14

In the first half of episode 10 the group goes to the moon on the night of the full moon. They arrive on the moon (where it never gets explained how they can breathe and talk despite not wearing space suits. (Seras): Magic. (Nitsuj): Shut up) where they see the ruins of the Moon Kingdom (well that was easy. Has NASA just been screwing around or something? Seriously these guys found the kingdom within seconds upon landing on the moon). They enter the kingdom where Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus pull a sword out of a stone (all hail the new rulers of the new Moon Kingdom) which awakens the spirit of Queen Serenity queen of the Moon Kingdom and Sailor Moon’s mom from her previous life (so wait the mom’s name is Serenity and the princess’ name is Serenity? I imagine this was confusing around the castle). Queen Serenity tells the scouts that the sword is a new weapon for the scouts to use in their fights to protect Sailor Moon and goes on to explain what the cats told them last episode about the collapse of the Moon Kingdom but gives us a few more details on the event. Such as telling us that after Endymion died protecting Princess Serenity she took her life to be with him (Romeo and Juliet in space). We also find out that after Queen Serenity used the silver crystal to seal away the evil force controlling the people of earth and have the others reborn on earth this caused the Moon Kingdom to collapse as well as restart the history of Earth (I understand the Moon Kingdom collapsing but how did all of this affect the Earth starting over again? Does this mean Queen Serenity caused a second big bang to occur?). After telling them all of this she tells them that they must destroy the evil that has returned once and for all and her spirit disappears wishing them luck. In the second half we find out that Kunzite and the others aren’t really servants of evil but instead are knights and not just any knights they were knights of earth who served directly under Endymion (//youtu.be/ciMFxipOehE). The knights begin to remember their past and try to defeat Beryl themselves but they get defeated and she brainwashes them again into her loyal servants where she sends them to freeze over Tokyo. The scouts fight them where Venus tells the others who they really are and reveals that they all fell in love with each other (holy shit, this is some development on the part of Kunzite and the others. And to think in the other anime two of them were playing for the other team). The scouts stop fighting allowing the knights to attack them (love hurts) leaving Sailor Moon to save their butts. She uses her powers to unfreeze the city (looks like it’s gonna be a warm morning) and gives the scouts the chance to remove the curse on the knights but the knights escape still remaining loyal to Beryl. Speaking of Beryl she brainwashes Mamuro into her loyal servant (damn, Beryl be pimpin’. Why take over the world you got your own harem enjoy yourself) and sends him to retrieve the Silver Crystal and kill Sailor Moon.

In episode 11 Mamuro returns under the control of the Dark Kingdom where he hypnotizes Motoki into believing they’re best friends (Yes, best friends. *Careless Whisper begins to play in the background* Too easy) and becomes a part-timer at the arcade where he befriends Usagi who along with the other scouts can’t tell that that’s Mamuro because his eyes are a different color (I kid you not that is the honest truth. There is no physical change to his appearance besides his eyes and these girls can’t tell that it’s Mamuro. How blind are these girls?). Mamuro befriends Usagi trying to get her to spill the beans about all of her secrets (and he does it in a rather seductive but creepy way). The other scouts sense something is wrong and Makoto approaches the possessed Mamuro where she gets hypnotized and tricks the other scouts into coming to the Sailor Cave where the evil Tuxedo Mask gets the Silver Crystal and throws Luna to the ground like a ragdoll (//youtu.be/5BE_jw4e9uA). Usagi transforms and Queen Beryl appears out of nowhere to tell Sailor Moon that the person standing before her is in fact her beloved Mamuro.

So in episode 12 everyone is shocked that the Mamuro look alike is Mamuro himself (//youtu.be/sk85lYvLdjQ). The scouts fight Queen Beryl and Mamuro where Venus summons the holy sword they got from the moon and uses that sword to try and kill Beryl (time to go Samurai Champloo on your ass) but she gets pushed back by a force field. Sailor Moon then takes the sword and with the help of the other scouts is able to pass Beryl’s force field and destroy her ice necklace which was her power source (all this time I thought it was her staff). With her necklace gone Queen Beryl slowly begins to die and we see that in her past life she was a maid girl (I assume) in the Earth Kingdom’s castle where she too fell in love with Endymion only to find out that Endymion had fallen in love with Serenity. Heartbroken, jealous, and angry (all the symptoms you find in a girl) Beryl became Metalia’s pawn in over throwing the Moon Kingdom which resulted in Endymion dying, the Moon Kingdom collapsing, Earth’s history rewritten, and everybody getting reincarnated on Earth (I gotta say when you really get to the root of the problem it’s quite funny). Beryl dies but Mamuro is still under Metalia’s control and she uses him to steal the sword as well as the Silver Crystal (he’s just taking everything isn’t he?). Mamuro escapes into a portal with Sailor Moon right behind him. She gets taken to the fortress of the Dark Kingdom (which is in the North Pole. I guess the Dark Kingdom conquered Santa’s Workshop after failing to conquer the moon) where she faces off against Mamuro and Metalia and gets beaten up pretty badly. The other scouts teleport to the North Pole as well where they face off against the knights and snap them out of it only to watch them die by the hands of Metalia (man there are a lot of death flags in this episode). Back with Sailor Moon’s battle she uses the power of love to free Mamuro but Metalia’s powers are just too strong for her. She receives a message from Luna telling her that the key to destroying Metalia is re-combining the Silver Crystal and combining its power with the power of the holy sword. Sailor Moon tries to retrieve the crystal’s half which is inside of Mamuro but fails. No longer able to stand seeing Mamuro under the control of evil she picks up the holy sword, slashes Mamuro, and then commits seppuku on herself (what is with all the surprise killing in this episode?).

Episode 13 picks up where episode 12 left off with Sailor Moon and Mamuro dying (actually we find out later they’re both still alive they just both passed out from the shock of almost dying. Sailor Moon was protected by Mamuro’s pocket watch which absorbed the hit and Mamuro was protected by the crystals of his knights. . .which somehow got put in his pocket despite the fact that the knights were killed off earlier in the previous episode and we never saw them turn into crystals or anything. Major plothole right there). The other scouts come in to see this as the Silver Crystal is reformed right in front of them (it’s so beautiful and shiny). Metalia comes in and absorbs the crystal along with Sailor Moon and Mamuro and begins spreading darkness all over the world turning people into monsters and having them attack one another (you know I gotta ask, what exactly is Metalia’s plan? When you really sit down and think about it she’s never established what her plan is. Yeah to cover the Earth in darkness I get that but why does she want to cover the Earth in darkness? Why is she doing this? Where did she come from? How did she get this way? And what’s her next step after she’s taken over the Earth?). The scouts try to stop her but they’re not strong enough to beat her (sorry you must be the main character to beat this villain). As the scouts lay on the ground beaten, exhausted, defenseless (if the situation weren’t so dire a part me would find this arousing) they begin to remember Sailor Moon and how she bought them all together (all she did was just point out the obvious that everyone in the show were too stupid to see). This gives them the strength to get back up and they sacrifice their lives in order to wake Sailor Moon up inside Metalia. The plan works as Sailor Moon wakes back up, gets the silver crystal and escapes with Mamuro who regains consciousness. Sailor Moon then unlocks the true power of the crystal and tries to seal Metalia with it but can’t do it (//youtu.be/qiAPczabvng) and begins losing confidence in herself (just how little self-esteem do you have? You’re the princess of a lost kingdom on the moon, have guardians, a talking cat, and a hot boyfriend. No homo. You are literally living every girl’s fantasy. If this isn’t a confidence boost than I don’t know what is). Mamuro gets back up, kisses her (now is not the time for this), and tells her that she can do this because she’s Sailor Moon (you’re bulletproof). This restores Sailor Moon’s confidence and the episode ends on a cliffhanger.

Finally, in episode 14 Sailor Moon destroys Metalia (scene here: //youtu.be/O8Dm16Sm7gY, about damn time). However, Sailor Moon had to use up all her power which means her broche got destroyed in the battle. The good news however is the Moon Kingdom is resurrected and after teleporting to the kingdom she receives a new broche which she then uses to restore Earth and resurrect the other scouts except for the knights (yeah, kind of a bitch move on Sailor Moon’s part if you ask me. She gets to keep her boyfriend. You guys get nothing). After that things return to normal, Usagi and Mamuro are dating (though I’m still a little worried about the age gap), and a loli calling herself Usagi comes falling from the sky and holds Sailor Moon at gun point demanding that she hand over the Silver Crystal (alright this loli don’t mess around).

Well that’s the first arc of Sailor Moon Crystal for the next arc we-

(Shizuku): Hey boss!

*Shizuku enters the room*

(Shizuku): Sorry to disturb you but we kinda need your help.

*From behind Shizuku, Chibi Isis slowly pops out slightly battered and bruised with tears in her eyes carrying broken katanas and a broken wand*

(Nitsuj): Woah! What happened?

(Shizuku): We were fighting a large group of viruses. Some of them snuck up from behind and attacked Chibi and well you can figure out the rest.

(Chibi Isis): Are mad Nii-chan? I broke the weapons you gave me.

(Nitsuj): Aww Chibi *hugs Chibi Isis* I would never get mad at you over something like this. If anything I should be apologizing to you. If I only made your weapons stronger you wouldn’t have gotten so beaten up in the first place. I’m just glad you’re alright. Now let’s get you checked out and healed.

(Shizuku): Umm, I got injured too you know.

(Nitsuj): Oh you’re fine you big crybaby. Well guys looks like we’ll be stopping here for today. But come back next week when I review the second arc of the series. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
