Project #23: Mahou Sensei Negima Part 2

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Well as you can see everything went well in court, after I told them what I was doing they sympathized with me and allowed me to go. However, my punishment still continues as I’m force to keep watching this ass of an anime. So let’s get the counter ready as we continue into the anime that just gives the middle finger salute to the author and its fans Mahou Sensei Negima. I wonder how long it’ll take them to screw-up this time.

Episodes 14-18

So the episode begins with Negi working on some potions (screw-up:50. Why am I not surprise). Konoka walks in coming back from a marriage meeting that her grandfather setup and as Negi helps her undress from her kimono she grabs the potion gets drunk and attacks Negi (nothing more sloppy and hot then drunk sex. Screw-up:51). The next day we go into town where we meet Sakurako, Madoka, and Misa the cheerleaders of Negi’s class who spot Negi and Konoka shopping together and assume their on a date (I would make a call the cops joke but they’re both minors so it’s okay. A little disturbing but okay). They send Asuna a picture of them which is overseen by Ayaka who orders them to follow them and make sure they don’t get close (Ayaka: Negi’s virginity is mine and mine alone). So the cheerleaders follow them around stopping any attempts of them getting close by dressing as hoodlums and picking a fight with Negi in which he uses his fus ro dah powers to blow away one of their pants (either that’s a chick or that man has the smallest penis known to mankind. Screw-up:52). While this is all going on Ayaka and Asuna go there to spy on them as well. Along the way Asuna starts to believe that Konoka might in fact have feelings for Negi (aww, is someone a little jealous that their Tails is being taken away from them). They all meet up and see that Negi is taking a nap on Konoka’s lap (the benefits of being a cute 10 year old boy right there folks). Not being able to stand it anymore Ayaka comes out of hiding and confronts them but it turns out they were just shopping around for a new alarm clock for Asuna that they accidently broke last night. Everything is resolved, the cheerleaders are scolded by Ayaka, and they all head back to the academy (screw-up:53).

Episode 15 focuses on the backstory of Asuna and Ayaka who have been fighting each other since grade school. The episode opens with a dream Ayaka is having at her family mansion (yeah, she’s rich, like I said this isn’t a class it a lists of targets for a romantic SIM game). She receives a message that says Negi has come to visit which makes her very happy but when she arrives to greet him she’s shocked to see the rest of the class is there with him (screw-up:54. Oh come on! This is ridiculous). They all hang out at the pool where Ayaka tries to get Negi to rub oil on her back (trust me, that’s not the only thing she wants him to rub) but is interrupted by Asuna (screw-up:55). As time goes on Chachamaru goes berserk in the pool and tries to kill everyone (it’s Terminator all over again). After damaging the mansion they decide to leave except for Negi who stays behind because the reason he came to visit Ayaka was to be her little brother for a day. Why? Well, throughout the episode we see flashbacks that Asuna and Ayaka are actually really close friends who just fight a lot and when they were kids Ayaka was going to have a little brother but through some complications he died devastating Ayaka greatly because she was looking forward to being a big sister. She stays sad at school for days but Asuna gets into a fight with her and she cheers up. Today (as in the episode’s day) is her brother’s birthday and Asuna asks Negi to be her little brother for the day to cheer her up. I have to admit with all the screw-ups in this series I’m glad they decided to keep this the same because this really is quite sad but it’s also beautiful to see that despite their constant fighting Asuna and Ayaka are best friends with each other and really do care for each other.

Episode 16 is just one major screw-up episode (screw-up:56) that is unbelievable. I. . . can’t believe they actually fucked the series up this bad. Okay, in this episode the class has a test of courage competition in which they trick Negi into going into a haunted school building to put a bow on a skeleton but in reality it’s actually a setup for a game in which teams of 2 go into the building and try to kiss Negi. The teams are Nodoka and Yue, Makie and Yuna, Fuka and Fumika, Ku-fei and Keade, and Ayaka and Chizuru. They all enter the building using their own methods, have a few fights, and while all of that is going on Negi gets knocked out and his magic creates clones of him and they run around the building. After Nodoka sees them and faints (I guess 5 Negis was too much for her to handle all at the once) they run throughout the building and each meet a group. One of the Negi clones pushes Yue down and forces himself on to her which scares her (a 10 year old boy is forcing his way onto a 14 year old girl. Shouldn’t this be the other way around or something). Luckily Asuna comes in right the fuck out of nowhere and Falcon kicks him which causes him to explode. The other groups kiss the Negi clones and they all explode as well ((1) I’ve heard of going off too soon but this ridiculous. (2) He went out with a bang at least. (3) At least he didn’t get it in their hair. (4) Talk about a short fuse. There, 4 jokes, choose whichever one you like). They end the episode the next day with the girls believing that the Negis were all ghost (doubt it, don’t you know ghost hide their faces and stop moving whenever you look at them).

Moving on to episode 17 which IS AN EPISODE THAT NEVER HAPPENS IN THE FUCKING MANGA! RARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH! NITSUJ MAD! ROOOOOOOOOAR! NITSUJ MAD! NITSUJ SMASH! GET REVENGE ON WORLD! ROOOOOOOOOOOOOAR! (Isis): It appears that the master has finally snapped. Don’t worry I’ll bring him back. *One hour * (Nitsuj): I. . . apologize for that outburst of anger. I was just upset so much at this anime’s screw-ups that I had no choice but to go berserk on everything within a 10 mile radius. But, thanks to Isis I’ve calmed down and after listening to her advice and having been sedated I have decided to stop the screw-up counter seeing as how I destroyed it in the rampage and just simply focus on the anime and point out all of these screw-ups once again in a side blog. With that being said let’s continue. We see in episode 17 that Yue is still thinking about the events from the last episode and starts to wonder if she too has feelings for Negi like Nodoka. But that’ll have to wait because Yue gives Nodoka some tickets to a theme park called Magical Land (it’s like Disney Land only cheaper and less flashy) and tells Nodoka to take Negi on a date and confess her feelings to him. Through a series of events the ticket winds up in Negi’s hand and they go to the park for their date. They go to the park with Yue and Asuna watching over them in mascot disguises (that even the ghosts from Pac-Man would find disturbing) and help set the mood and stop obstacles that might appear. At the end of the day Nodoka finally works up the courage to confess to Negi which leaves him in a state of shock to end the episode.

In episode 18 inspired by Nodoka’s bravery Asuna decides to be brave as well and confess her feelings to Takahata on his birthday. She also decides to bake him a cake (why, did he journey through 8 worlds and save you from a turtle dragon). While this is going on Negi and Nodoka are having a hard time trying to figure out how to act around each other now that Nodoka has confessed. Negi and Chamo also get roped into trying Asuna’s horrible cake that nearly kills them (haven’t seen cooking this bad since Himeji from Baka and Test). She eventually makes the right cake and Negi decides to confront Nodoka about their relationship (personally I have no problem; I think they make a cute couple). Negi confronts Nodoka and he tells her he wants to start off as friends (ohh~ friend zone the worst possible zone to be in). As for Asuna and her confession, well Takahata left for a business trip so unfortunately she can’t confess to him and will have to wait until next year (sorry Asuna, but your love is in another castle).

Episodes 19-22

In episode 19 we focus on a character I think everyone who has watch the anime has seen but have noticed that nobody in the anime takes notice up to this point. A grey-haired girl with red eyes who’s in the first seat of the class, this is Sayo a ghost who went to the school 60 years ago but died and can’t remember how. No one in the class can see or hear her but she still goes to class and hangouts with the group even though they can’t see her (what a nice ghost, I dare say she beats Casper in terms of friendliness). One of the students Kazumi who is a member of the newspaper club and sits next to Sayo decides to investigate her and find out who she is. As Kazumi keeps investigating Sayo starts to remember her past about how she used to have a little sister who wanted to see her dead mother again by planting tsuwabuki flowers in the garden by the school’s clock tower. One night during a bad storm she goes outside to protect the flowers and dies (we don’t see her die but it’s speculated that she died from pneumonia). Kazumi and Sayo run to the clock tower and discover a field of tsuwabuki flowers by the tower and Sayo also finds a plaque of wood that her little sister left asking God to give back her mother and big sister (okay, I have to admit this actually got a tear to roll down my face). As Sayo cries she becomes visible and Kazumi who is totally okay with the fact that she is seeing a ghost (she has the right response). The next day in class as the group prepares for their field trip to Kyoto (no, bad things tend to happen to anime characters who go there) Kazumi speaks up and says that they left Sayo out of a group and Eva casts a spell that allows everyone to finally see her (holy shit our class has ghost! Call the cops! Call the Ghostbusters! Call someone, the world deserves to know about this!) and instead of being afraid or terrified they’re all amazed and welcome her to the class. We end the episode with the principal repeating a poem Sayo wrote when she was still alive and admits that he had a crush on her.

We begin the trip to Kyoto in episode 20 with a lot of strange things happening such as frogs appearing at temples out of nowhere and getting squashed (it’s not easy being green) and birds attacking Negi because he’s carrying a message from the school principal that he has to give to the Kansai Magic Association in Kyoto. Setsuna, one of the students in Negi’s class, resident swordswoman of the class, and the childhood friend of Konoka but doesn’t talk to her because as a child she failed to protect her and decided to watch her over her from afar stops the flying bird and returns the letter back to Negi but Chamo believes that she’s an enemy trying to get the letter. Later that night in the baths Setsuna mistakes Negi for an enemy and threatens to crush his man parts (oh~ you sick bitch). While this is going on Konoka gets kidnapped by a mage dressed as a monkey. Negi, Asuna, and Setsuna chase the monkey mage (I can’t believe I just wrote that) and Setsuna reveals that Konoka is actually a mage as well whose powers rival even Negi’s father. They chase after her and find out that she’s a member of the Hogani Faction a faction of eastern mages who have separated themselves from the K.M.A and want to use Konoka’s powers to bring forth an army of demons. They corner her but another sowrdswoman named Tsukuyomi shows up to stop them (and she is crazy. I’m talking Alex from Clockwork Orange crazy). Setsuna fights her while Negi and Asuna deals with the familiars. Asuna summons her magical weapon which is a paper-sword fan (a gimmick weapon. Silly yes, but powerful none the less). She beats the familiars and they get back Konoka from the monkey mage. After Konoka regains consciousness Setsuna runs off and we get a shot of a new mage name dFate (who plays a very important role in the manga) wondering about Negi’s power level (it’s over 9000).

The trip continues in episode 21 as Negi, Asuna, Konoka, and Setsuna arrive at the K.M.A headquarters which is also the home of Konoka. Her father is also the head honcho of the K.M.A. That night the Hogani Faction show up, break the barrier, kidnap Konoka and turn everyone into stone except for Negi, Setsuna, and Asuna who are able to escape the spell because of Asuna. How? Well because Asuna has the power to nullify spells. With Konoka in their possession the monkey mage gives our heroes a glimpse of her power by summoning demons. They fight the demons but are outnumbered and outmatched until Kaede, Ku-fei and Tatsumiya (a mercenary and classmate) show up and take on the demons for them. How did they know they were in danger and where did they come from never explained? Isis, give me another sedative shot, please. They arrive at the altar where Konoka is but are too late as the monkey mage has summoned an ancient demon and with it she shall rule the world. Negi tries to fight but his magic has no effect on the demon and Setsuna tries to free Konoka by physically breaking through the barrier which is hurting her. Fate manages to free himself from the prison Negi cast on him, wraps Asuna in water tentacles (oh yeah, because this could benefit from tentacle rape) and is about to finish Negi off until Hell Girl comes to stop them (ahhhhh~). No, it’s actually Eva who thanks to the principal is able to pass through the school barrier and arrive in Kyoto. She quickly disposes of Fate and freezes the giant demon (https://youtu.be/nC8zz95rm8s, you knew this was coming) and shatters it completely (Eva wins! Iceality). With the Hogani group defeated the demons fighting Keade, Ku-fei and Tatsumiya retreat, the spell at K.M.A is broken and Setsuna is able to save Konoka. But the barrier was too much for her body and Setsuna is dying quickly but Konoka kisses her and her healing magic saves her life. With everything resolved they enjoy the rest of the school trip and Konoka and Setsuna are hanging out again just like they did as children.

Episode 22 is probably the most boring episode in the season. There are only two major things that happen in this episode. The first is Negi asking Eva to be his teacher in magic in which Eva agrees (*smashes head on desk* Fuck! This! Anime!) and Asuna seeing Takahata on a date with Shizuna which causes her to be sad for a few days but gets over it (alright, this actually does happen in the manga, maybe they’re starting to get back on track).

Episodes 23-26

We open episode 23 with Asuna as a child running and crying from a destroyed village (I should have known not to get my hopes up) and a demon curses her saying that in 10 years she will die (why her, why are you picking on the little child). She wakes up remembering her past but instead of telling anyone she keeps it a secret (dumbass) and decides to go about the day normally. She even confesses her feelings to Takahata but plays it off as a safe love instead of love-love. While this is going Negi organizes a party to celebrate Asuna’s birthday and they have a big party for her in the dorms that night and have fun. Later on she climbs the World Tree and talks to Negi where she finally dies to end the episode (wow, right the fuck out of nowhere).

In episode 24 all we see is crying, more crying, and more fucking crying as everyone feels sad about Asuna’s sudden death (I know I should be sad but THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN IN THE FUCKING MANGA SO FUCK THESE LAST EPISODES! These last episodes are the biggest middle finger to a manga I’ve ever seen. Konoka blames herself for Asuna’s death because she didn’t notice her acting strange but Setsuna comforts her and Negi not being able to handle the loss of Asuna anymore goes to Eva in the hopes of pulling off an Edward Elric and bringing her back. But, if FMA has taught us anything is that the dead remain dead and Eva tells Negi this upsetting him. Setsuna also decides to leave the school because she blames herself for Asuna’s death and decides to protect Konoka from the shadows (what is with this assholery? Did everybody just go stupid or some shit off-screen because clearly this makes no sense whatsoever! Are you beginning to see why I hate this anime). As Negi feels depress by the river Yue comes along, finally snaps, confesses her love to Negi and kisses him right in front of Nodoka.

As the class prepares for the cultural festival in episode 25 Negi continues to mope about Asuna and gets the idea that if he summons a demon and sells his soul to it it’ll bring Asuna back to life. NO! STOP! THIS IS BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT! YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS! *Isis approaches with sedative* ISIS! (Isis): I’ll just let you get this off your chest; I’ll be in the corner if you need me. (Nitsuj): DID YOU GUYS EVEN READ THE MANGA UP TO THIS POINT!? THIS IS SOMETHING NEGI WOULD NEVER DO IN A MILLION YEARS GIVEN HIS PAST WITH THEM! IN THE MANGA WE FIND OUT THAT NEGI’S HOMETOWN WAS ATTACKED BY DEMONS THAT TURNED EVERYONE INTO STONE AND HE ALMOST LOST HIS SISTER IN THE ATTACK AS WELL! ARE THE PEOPLE AT XEBEC MORONS! I MEAN, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS BECAUSE AT THIS POINT THE MANGA HAD THIS CHAPTER OUT LONG BEFORE THE ANIME GOT STARTED! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE; THERE IS LITERALLY NO EFFORT UP TO THIS POINT ANYMORE! FUCK! THIS! ANIME~! *breathing heavily* I cannot . . . be the only one seeing this complete insult of an anime? Please, tell me I’m not because I seriously need some faith in humanity right now. Takahata comes in and tells Negi that his plan won’t work and knocks him out (thank you, at least there’s still someone in this anime who has sense). He wakes up in the nurse’s office where he overhears Takahata and Shizuna talk about sending him back and losing his teaching job because of his actions and he escapes via window. While walking in the rain he comes across Chao and Hakase who are his students, the smartest girls in school, know that Negi is a mage and tells Negi that he can save Asuna with SCIENCE! They go into a building where Chao gives Negi a time machine watch which can take Negi back in time to undo the curse put on Asuna as a child (ohh~ fuck you Xebec you hear me fuck you). They say that the watch uses magic as its power source (magic and science coexisting together? What twisted world is this) and Negi uses it but he drags the rest of the class with him since they were near him and they all travel 9 years into the past where he meets Asuna in her child form and his father Nagi. While this is going on the class figures out they’re in Germany, find Chamo speaking to Eva, and she decides to tell them everything (Eva: The anime is going to suck, it has no respect for the source material, and it’s gonna take them about 4 years to get the story right). Going back to Negi his father tells him that Asuna has a special power that allows her to nullify magic and because of this demons and calamity always followed her (sounds like a singers career if you ask me). So she made a pact with a demon asking to be free from all-manners of magic hurting which led to her being killed in 10 years and he’s traveling with her to nullify the pact. Alright, good gesture but still I don’t get it, why 10 years to live? Why wait that long to kill her, just kill her right there and save yourself the trouble or better yet make her your loyal servant that’s what I would do I mean I control a girl who can nullify magic nobody gonna stop me. This really is some lazy writing right here if you ask me, there are so many plotholes in this plan that I could play a whack-a-mole with the whole population of China. The next morning a demon attacks Nagi and stabs him through the chest but Nagi decides that if he’s going down he’s taken the demon with him and disappears into a black void in the sky with Asuna watching.

Going to the last episode (thank God) we open where we left off with Asuna crying at Nagi’s demise (I’m crying too he was the only character who actually didn’t do anything stupid). She runs off crying into a village which gets attacked by demons who try to kill her (see? What was the point of keeping her alive? This 10 year pact is bullshit, why make a pact if you’re just gonna kill her anyway. Come on anime, you’ve completely fucked this series in the ass at least get your own story right). Negi shows up and saves Asuna from the demons and meets up with his students with the demons hot on their trail. He creates a wind barrier around them to come up with a plan on what to do next (well I’m pretty sure none of you wanna die a virgin so Negi get to it). Nah, I’m kidding, Nodoka makes the brilliant move of performing a pactio with Negi and becoming his partner (nothing less from a Miyazaki). The other girls follow after her and soon they all perform a pactio with Negi and become his partners (and just like that Negi became the youngest pimp in anime history). They all fight the demons using their own power that they got from the pactio and the head demon shows up, grabs Asuna and uses her as a shield against Negi’s magic. He tries again only this time Asuna regains consciousness and with her help Negi is able to purify the demon and the class returns back to their time. They return to the day of Asuna’s birthday with everyone losing their memory except for Eva and Chachamaru. Only this time around Asuna opens up to the class about her situation and they all gather around the World Tree and . . . I don’t know do some Care Bear thing by holding hands, Negi puts his staff over Asuna, Chao and Hakase use some magic machine, and this somehow removes the pact. I am not kidding this really is what happens, they don’t explain it or anything we’re just left to believe that it worked and you know what if it ends the anime I’ll believe it. The end.

Final Thoughts

Man, was this a tough one. I mean it; this has got to be worst adaption of a manga to an anime I’ve ever seen. It boggles my mind at how much they disregarded the original material and managed to screw up almost everything in the anime. I swear the only thing they managed to get absolutely right were the names of the characters. You’re probably thinking the reason they changed so much is because they caught up to the manga but no I did some research. Before this anime got started the manga had 8 volumes out and a total of 71 chapters in those 8 volumes and this was a weekly manga so chances are there could have possibly been more than 71 chapters at the time and when the anime was nearing its final month there were 10 volumes out. Also, in those 8 volumes they had already finished 4 arcs which would have been more than enough material to make 26 episodes. On top of the pointless changes made they missed out on so many major and important events in the manga (I’ll cover that in the side blog) and they downplay a lot of the characters such as Negi. They show him as just a kid with magic abilities but in truth he’s very smart, resourceful, and mature for his age especially in his fights; he’s very strong and clever. They also skip over his role as a teacher where he does act like a teacher and give advice to Asuna. A lot of the characters who have a personality in the manga and are actually funny and interesting are pushed aside such as Kazumi and Haruna the friend and roommate of Nodoka and Yue. These two are some of the most eccentric and hilarious characters in the manga and two of the few people who actually piece together that Negi is a mage.

The animation is alright but the character designs aren’t all that great in fact it almost looks like they recycled the same character model for some characters and just changed the hair color, height, and eye color of them. The side characters are there but they’re mostly just there for Negi to give him advice and check up on him from time to time and don’t really contribute that much to the season. Except for Chamo who kinda acts like an advisor for Negi and pushes him to do stuff he normally wouldn’t. The villains I’m kinda split about them. Eva was a good villain, she was evil, powerful and sadistic but at the same time funny and non-threatening. You do kind of sympathize with her situation and can understand why she’s being evil and all but at the same time you can laugh at her antics and how it’s ironic that such a small loli-girl is considered the most evil mage in the world. The Hogani Association wasn’t really all that great except for Fate and one other character that the anime left out because we never really know why they broke away from K.M.A or what their main goal is, there just there to serve as the catalyst for bringing Setsuna and Konoka back together and provide conflict for Negi and his group.

Final Score

The final score for Mahou Sensei Negima is a 2/10 there is no excuse for the amount of screw-ups and changes this anime made and I for one cannot believe so many people overlooked them. My advice, don’t watch the anime, read the manga. I’ve read the manga from beginning to end 3 times already and despite the loose ends of the ending it’s still a good read and well worth checking out. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter and wanna see Japan’s version of it then definitely check this out, you’ll enjoy it and be amazed at how good it is and how stupid the anime is for screwing up the way it did and making these unnecessary changes. Whatever you do, don’t watch this anime. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
