Project #44: The Top 11 Scariest Anime Characters

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Looking back on my childhood I realize that I grew up with a lot of scary stuff yet for one reason or another it never scared or phased me as a child. But now that I’m an adult I can finally see how something like the tunnel scene from Willy Wonka can be considered scary. Looking back on a lot of scary moments in movies and TV shows I can’t help but feel that it was done on purpose as in it was meant to scare us the same thing can be said about anime characters. Just as there are awesome and badass characters there are characters out there that were made to either creep us out or scare the living shit out of us. And today we’ll be taking a look at the top 11 anime characters that scare me and possibly you to no end. Why top 11? Because just like someone else on this site I too like to go one step beyond. Get ready to laugh at my horrors, this, is the Top 11 Scariest anime characters.

#11. Imperfect Cell from Dragonball Z

http://www.zerochan.net/1365475

I started watching Dragonball Z around the middle of the Namek/Frieza arc (I would soon go back and watch the earlier episodes when Toonami ran reruns on the show during the weekdays) so the Android/Cell arc was the first Dragonball Z arc I fully watched from beginning to end and boy was it an arc to start off with. The one thing that seemed to scare me the most during this arc was Cell and just how scary the show made him out to be. The way they revealed Cell was like something out of an alien horror movie the build-up and everything. First, Kami senses a strong power level other than the androids (my reaction: okay, that’s weird), Trunks and Gohan find another time capsule with a strange egg inside of it (my reaction: alright, starting to get scary), cities full of people start to vanish without a trace (my reaction: Alright DBZ, you’re starting to scare me), and then we finally see the creature that is Cell and at first he doesn’t look all that intimidating but then he absorbs a human right in front of our eyes with his tail. That scared me as a kid and haunted my nightmares for weeks. Imperfect Cell is scary because of his constant obsession with gaining more power and the way the show decided to introduce him to us like a horror movie. Now the reason why I say Imperfect Cell instead of the other two is because the stronger Cell got the less threatening he looked.

#10. Ai Enma from Hell Girl

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ri0G0gzR4d0/TFJPbfAvRkI/AAAAAAAABBU/c1G97vgr2Ug/s1600/Enma+Ai.jpg

https://th04.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2010/283/9/7/enma_ai_by_hiperion_sama-d30hp59.png

I know it’s weird to put a character on this list from an anime I just got done praising but Ai was a scary character. She has the appearance of a young girl who has supernatural powers and has the abilities to send people to Hell at will. On top of that she has this emotionless look in her eyes that says don’t mess with me or I will send you to Hell. Throw in the fact that the reason she’s still alive in the anime is because she murdered her village out of vengeance and you got yourself one scary character to be afraid of. If it wasn’t for the fact that as the show went on and we got to see that Ai still had the emotions of a human and was a good person she would have been higher on the list.

#9. The Scarecrow from Batman the Animated series Season 4

http://dvdmedia.ign.com/dvd/image/a…-series-volume-four-20060118024021111-000.jpg

Yeah I know this was an American cartoon but the animation for the show was done by the anime studio TMS so technically Scarecrow is an anime character. With all of the character redesigns made in season 4 the one who improved the most was The Scarecrow. In the earlier seasons of the Batman series the Scarecrow just never really scared me, every time I saw I just found myself laughing at how ridiculous he looked. But all that changed in the 4th where he got old western preacher crows, a cane, and a new voice that caught me complete off guard and scared me. Hell, he didn’t even look like a scarecrow anymore he just looked like a rotten corpse who had risen from the grave and decided to go off and scare people but his scariest point of all was that voice of his. My God, that voice and that body just sent chills down my spine every time I heard him speak. Jeffrey Combs just came in and just bought this character to life to scare everyone that by the time the episode was over you really were scared. Shoot, you could put Jeffrey Combs voice onto any horror creature and I guarantee you you will find that creature scary even the silliest looking horror creatures. While The Joker’s redesign was a complete failure it’s good to know that The Scarecrow’s redesign was a major hit that strikes fear into the hearts of viewers.

#8. Kotonoha Katsura from School Days

http://www.zerochan.net/772543

http://www.zerochan.net/427953

One of the first yandere girls I’ve ever seen in anime is one of the scariest characters I’ve seen in anime. Kotonoha can be seen as a tragic character because she fell in love with an asshole and the worst kind of asshole too the one who manipulates, uses you, and when he’s done with you tosses you aside for tomorrows trash pick-up. We see that Kotonoha is a very sweet and polite girl but whenever she feels someone is about to take something away she cares for greatly (Makoto in this case) her crazy switch goes off and she’s prepared to go as far as killing a girl just to see if she’s pregnant with Makoto’s child or not. While Sekai was also scary at one point, Kotohoha was way scarier on account of her crazed yandere mode and the lengths she’s willing to go to get back the person she loves. There’s also the fact that she decapitated the person she loved and carries his rotten head in a bag talking to it. And for those of you thinking about watching this anime just watch the last 5 or 10 minutes of the final episode that’s the whole anime right there.

#7. Yuno Gasai from Future Diary

http://www.zerochan.net/1189292

http://www.bhmpics.com/view-yuno_gasai-1440×900.html

http://media.animevice.com/uploads/1/10570/514447-4d2d9b99a452de2e5829742ad5f491ab.png

If you thought Kotonoha was crazy than you haven’t met Yuno. It was tough on who to put higher between the two but I decided to put Yuno higher because of the circumstances that forced them down the yandere road. Yuno had a bad relationship with her parents so much that she killed them when she was just a child and the only thing keeping her from going off the brink of insanity was Yuki promising to marry her when they were children. Because of this she’s willing to harm or kill anyone she feels will take Yuki away from her whether they be enemies, Yuki’s friends, or even Yuki’s mother she’s prepared to kill them without hesitation and she’ll do it with a smile on her face saying that it was all for love. I guess what makes her scarier than Kotonoha for me is that I feel that Kotonoha would stop herself from hurting people as if to say this isn’t what Makoto would want but Yuno on the other hand won’t stop, she will kill anyone or anything she sees as a threat to her and Yuki and that makes her even scarier in my book.

#6. Light from Death Note

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yHReDjum0…-of-Death-Note-bishonen-5772291-2514-2148.jpg

As if I need to go into great detail why this guy is scary. Light is a genius who believes that he is God and has been given the power to rid the world of evil and usher in the age of a new world free of evil and filled with honest and good people. A good idea and dream except he completely abandons that idea becoming a dark non-caring person who’s willing to put his friends and family members in danger just to accomplish his goals into what he believes to be for the greater good of the world and achieve his dream. What makes Light so scary is not only how smart he is in that he’s able to predict the movements of his opponents perfectly and counter them but in how strongly he believes that what he is doing is right and that he has done nothing wrong in the world. He believes that the people he has used and killed whether they be good or bad were a means to an end to achieve his ultimate goal and his way of thinking is wrong and scary. One person cannot rule the world nor should they try to rule the world because in the end they become what they’re fighting to destroy. Light, the man with a dream to make the world a better place but became consumed by evil and became what he wanted to destroy.

#5. Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!

http://www.zerochan.net/151106

https://th06.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2011/288/e/c/izaya_orihara_by_ladyaruba-d4cvv63.png

This was another tough choice between him and Light but I put him higher because while Light started off with the best of intentions for the world Izaya just wants to watch the world destroy itself. He enjoys it, he loves watching people suffer and putting them in chaotic and horrible situations just so he can observe their reactions. It’s like he’s trying to study humanity by putting people in these situations to understand them to some degree as if they were some foreign species. He’s just as smart as Light too he understands the way the human mind works and can predict what they’ll do next with high accuracy. Because of this he wins his fights without ever having to really fight. Izaya is a scary a person who if seen in the real world he could do some major damage to society. He’s scary for his thirst of chaos and destruction and the fact that he can beat people mentally without having to fight them directly.

#4. Kaede/Nyu/Lucy from Elfen Lied

https://medievalotaku.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/elfen_lied_lucy_1440x900_wallpaper_high.jpg

http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/24200000/Lucy-Elfen-Lied-anime-gore-24256806-1920-1080.jpg

Talk about the walking definition of personality disorder. Kaede/Nyu/Lucy are three separate personalities living in the same body with each one different from the other caused by the cruelty they faced in the world. Kaede was a tortured soul. She was bullied by others because of her horns but at the same time she was loved by her friends so she saw hope in humanity. Nyu was an innocent child who had an idea of good and evil and thanks to Kouta and Yuka was able to see the goodness of the world and find happiness. Lucy was the opposite of Nyu, she saw the cruelty of humanity and decided that if humanity hated her she would hate humanity even more. She developed a sadistic and sociopathic personality seeking to rid the world of humanity. She would kill humans at will, killing families just to use their house for shelter and food with no regret whatsoever, and even coming up with plans to spread her genes to males so that they would have a diclonius child who would in turn kill the parents and infect more people to achieve her dream of creating a world without humans and where she can live in peace. Out of all of these personalities Lucy seemed to be the dominant one and the stuff she did such as killing people in an instant and planning on giving heart attacks to people within the area is enough to scare anyone. Whatever personality you chose just know that this person is dangerous and can only be persuaded by the love of humanity so be careful around her.

#3. Alucard from Hellsing Ultimate

https://fc03.deviantart.net/fs11/i/2006/175/f/1/Alucard__Hellsing__by_Deathsshadow642.jpg

https://images.wikia.com/hellsing/images/0/0e/Alucard_ova_viii.jpg

Yeah I think you all knew this character was coming and can you blame me Alucard is scary both physically and mentally. He’s physically scary in that he’s a vampire, an immortal being who can’t be killed no matter how many times you try to kill him, you might as well just sit there and just say go ahead I’m dead you win. He’s scary mentally in that no matter what you do to kill him he’ll just get back up from it totally healed like nothing happened and just kill you saying that you had no chance to begin with. He’s like The Undertaker from the WWE when he was in his prime. His opponents would constantly beat the hell out of him but he would just rise back up and start destroying the other wrestler as if to say everything they did had no effect on him. Alucard would play mind games with his opponents and he enjoyed torturing them, he enjoyed having the upper hand and making them realize how insignificant they are compared to him and the scary part is he always backed it up no matter how strong the opponent was. It’s for these reasons that Alucard is not only a badass but also a scary person.

#2. The female cast from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

https://youtu.be/4OLX1giSaxU

https://youtu.be/8JTXwZ3XTh0

*Special thanks to 0Keyblade for allowing me use of his great videos.*

I decided to put all of them on the list because I feel that just naming one of them wouldn’t do the show any justice. The female characters of Higurashi are crazy psychopaths who need to be studied and analyzed to figure out what caused them to snap and become like this and it’s scary because when you first meet them they seem like such normal girls and remain normal girls throughout the series but in private they all commit gruesome acts of murder on one another with each one more violent and gruesome than the other. Out of all the characters Shion is probably the craziest and psychotic of all the characters I mean just look at what she did to her sister and friends. The whole series is split into separate arcs each retelling the story but changing things up each time putting characters in different situations and events that play out differently than the previous arc all because of this crazy festival that happens every year. This whole anime is almost like an experiment where you repeat the same experiment over and over again while changing things around to better understand the psychotic minds of the characters in the series. Whatever the problem of these characters are just know that they’re all scary people with an insane appetite for killing others and should be checked into a mental institute for their safety and our safety.

And the number one scariest anime character is. . .

#1. Johan Liebert from Naoki Urasawa’s Monster

http://www.zerochan.net/653883

http://www.zerochan.net/653879

This guy is the anti-Christ, I shit you not that is the basic idea of his character. He is a ruthless monster who kills at will leaving no traces of his involvement in the crime whatsoever or giving a reason as to why he’s committing these crimes to begin with. All we know is that wherever he goes death is sure to follow him. Everywhere he goes he manipulates, deceives, betrays, and psychologically torments humanity just for the sake of it. He plays some kind of mind game with people which bends them to his will and he’s able to manipulate them anyway he pleases and after he’s done with that person he goes on to the next person to do the same thing to them. It’s so scary because the guy presents himself as being a nice and understanding guy who shows concern and care for other people but in truth it’s all a facade to lower their guard and bend them to his will. He doesn’t even look evil, if I just met him and someone told me he was evil I would have walked away not believing a word you said but return back to you at a later time saying you were right. In the show the guy has orchestrated 3 mass killings just for the sake it, he’s like a kid with a magnifying glass picking on a line of ants he’s just toying with them for no good reason and enjoying it. Johan is like a combination of all the characters on this list, the ultimate scariest anime character. He has the intelligence of Light and Izaya, the sick mind of killing others like the female characters from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Lucy, looking down and belittling others like Alucard, a rather scary voice like The Scarecrow, the dark and scary presence of Cell and Ai, and having no care for anyone whether they be friend or foe like Yuno and Kotohana. It is because of these things and more that Johan is the scariest anime character I have ever seen and the only character on this list who still manages to scare me to this day.

Well that’s my list I hope you enjoyed and be sure to come back this Thursday October 31st to see the Halloween Special of Project Nitsuj.
