Project #96: Hellsing Ultimate Part 1

Hello and welcome Project Nitsuj. It’s time my friends for the main event of this year’s Ani-ween, Hellsing. Hellsing is considered one of the best mangas and animes out there, the series tells the story of the secret Protestant organization known as the Hellsing organization who protect the Queen and her country from supernatural forces all with the help of the demonic badass vampire Alucard the strongest vampire in the world. The series was written by Kouta Hirano in 1997 and ended in 2009 creating quite a fanbase over the years and even getting a 13 episode anime series produced by Gonzo in 2001. But we’re not here to look at that anime we’re here to look at the OVAs called Hellsing Ultimate. Hellsing Ultimate or just Hellsing is a 10 episode OVA that tells the story of the manga from beginning to end. While I’ve heard the 13 episode anime isn’t entirely bad everyone prefers to watch the OVAs over the anime series because the animation is better, more action and emotional scenes, gore and follows the story of the manga more closely than the anime did. The first OVA came out in 2006 and the last one coming out near the end of 2012. A lot of people credit Madhouse (H.O.T.D and Devil May Cry) for the production of the OVAs but in truth this was a project that bounced around between them and the two anime studios Satelight (AKB0048 and Log Horizon) and Graphinica x Kelmadick (Fractale and Wonder Momo). Satelight worked on episodes 1-4, Madhouse episodes 5-7, and Graphinica x Kelmadick finished the series with episodes 8-10. Apparently the project kept moving between studios over the course of its production with a reason for this being unknown but if I had to guess I say that the studios were working on bigger and more important animes at the time that Hellsing kept getting pushed back and Hirano really wanted to finish the series up so he took the project and kept going to different studio hoping they could finish it. So despite these different studios and a six year wait for the series to end does it live up to hype of everyone? Well let’s sink our teeth into Hellsing Ultimate. Also, I’m watching the dub version.

Episodes 1-5

The series starts by showing a young Integra being hunted by her uncle who wants to take control of the Hellsing organization and in order to do that he must eliminate Integra who has been named the new leader after her father died (add him to the list of evil uncles and aunts trying to control the family business). While being chased Integra makes her way down to the family basement to uncover the family’s darkest secret that her father said will protect her should the time come (a semi-automatic assault rifle because she could really use one of those right now). She makes her way to the basement where she meets the sleeping Alucard voiced by Crispin Freeman (Itachi from the Naruto series) and after being shot she awakes the creature with her blood (now while this is a very good scene I have to admit this is the one scene that the anime did better than the OVA. In the manga and anime we actually see Alucard slaughter everyone trying to harm Integra but in the OVA they skip over it. But I have the perfect solution to this problem right here: https://youtu.be/HiL9WzZ1O80, well despite the fact the animation took a slight downgrade you can’t argue with results). Years later Integra voiced by Victoria Harwood is all grown-up and is consulting the British police (oh what are they gonna do they just stand still all day? I’m kidding) who have sent their men into a town to catch a priest who is really a vampire and has turned the whole town into ghouls. Integra tells them to back off and let her organization handle it where they send in Alucard to fight the ghouls and take care of the vampire priest. The ghouls shoot at him thinking they’ve killed them (hoho, you poor bastards, you have no idea that death is staring directly at you) but he gets back up and begins shooting and killing them (when Alucard shoots you, you don’t die because he shot you, you die because you don’t wanna face him again). The vampire priest grabs the police girl (with the big titties) aka Seras voiced by K.T. Gray where he says he’s going turn her into a ghoul (uh-huh), but first he’s going to kill her (neat), but before he does that he’s going to rape her (good on ya). Alucard asks Seras if she’s still a virgin which she says yes to (alright, fresh fruit right for the picking) and Alucard shoots her where he kills her and the vampire priest but Alucard turns Seras into a vampire to save her life (well she’s not a virgin anymore). She wakes up in the headquarters of Hellsing where she’s told by Integra that she’s a vampire now and will be working for them from now on (the pay is low but the insurance and employee benefits are great). She’s then thrown into the field with Alucard to take out another group of vampires that are causing havoc in a residential neighborhood where she gets her first kill.

After that scene Integra begins to think that the multiple vampire incidents are all being made by someone to keep the organization busy but her theory will have to wait because we meet one of my favorite characters the insane and righteous Father Anderson voiced by Steven Brand and I have to admit it is funny seeing a man of Scottish descent voice a character of Italian descent (you can tell he’s trying his best not to make Anderson sound too Scottish but it just keeps slipping out). We cut to Ireland where Alucard is in a building shooting up ghouls (which makes you wonder who you should be praying for the ghouls or the vampire) when he calls in Seras to finish them off and gives her a few tips (scene here: //youtu.be/_a2YG119IIw. (Ghoul): Best. Death. Ever). After killing them all Anderson shows up and stabs Seras in the back with multiple blades (bet that’s not the first time someone’s caught her by surprise) and reveals that he’s already killed the vampire in the building (and we missed it!? Well we did see a hot woman kill a bunch of ghouls so I’ll let it go) and that he’s going to kill them next. Integra catches wind of Anderson being in Ireland and flies off to Ireland hoping Alucard and Anderson haven’t met each other in the fear that that’ll kill each other (or destroy Ireland in the process). Alucard and Anderson begin to fight in a fast-paced and well done fight scene where Anderson decapitates Alucard and turns his attention to Seras but she escapes cuddling the head of Alucard. Anderson catches up to her but Integra shows up to save her and Alucard revives himself forcing Anderson to retreat. After he leaves we end the episode with a cute Alucard and Seras moment (scene here: //youtu.be/v-uXds1cS_o, it’s like The Joker and Harley Quinn minus the violence. There’s still some verbal abuse but it’s all in good nature).

Episode 2 starts off with Alucard having a dream about his past (scene here: //youtu.be/epol6eXdcnk, my God the monster cries). After that we see that Integra is holding a meeting with her financial supporters (they must REALLY hate her) of the recent wave of vampire attacks (blah blah blah just give them more money and they’ll handle the rest). Going to Seras’ side of the story we see that Walter the butler of Integra and retired operative of the Hellsing organization voiced by Ralph Lister has replaced Seras’ bed with something a bit more fitting for a vampire (scene here: //youtu.be/Bcm39GTvs6M, I like how her mood changed when she found out Alucard ordered the coffin for her. She’s clearly got the hots for him which is understandable considering he did make her a woman) and gives Alucard and her new guns (scene here: //youtu.be/wH9TX5VJS4c, man Walter gives the best gifts. Remind me to put him on my Christmas list of friends). We then go outside the Hellsing headquarters and meet the Valentine brothers Luke the sophisticated one who believes he’s superior to everyone around him (keep telling yourself that) and Jen the foul-mouth brother who likes to kill and just hilarious like almost everything that comes out of his mouth is guaranteed to make you laugh. They’ve been given orders to attack the Hellsing organization with an army of ghouls and kill everyone inside. They cut the power to the place so they can’t contact others for help and begin killing all the soldiers and turning them into ghouls as well. They split into two teams with Luke sensing Alucard’s presence and going to face him (dude if you value your life you will stay away from him as much as possible) and Jen leading the ghouls to Integra in fact he even sends her a message to let her know what’s coming (scene here: //youtu.be/wA0TitlHLgQ, Integra is giving off the “I’m gonna kill this fucker” vibe). Luke continues to roam the halls where we see his vampire skills at work by slicing people up (not impressed. Yin-Yang did that to a few Trojans about a week ago). Walter and Seras use the vents and reach the conference room where they tell Integra that they’ll take care of the situation and we get some more cool fighting scenes (scene here: //youtu.be/fi8LRlmwtWQ, okay seriously I want Walter as my butler the guy kicks ass). Jen escapes Seras and sends the ghouls of the dead Hellsing soldiers on them while Jen makes it to the conference room where Integra and everyone else are waiting with guns and shoot him up (the lesson here is don’t fuck with Integra). She pumps him for information where he spontaneously catches fire and begins burning to death but before he dies he tells them to be aware of Millennium (millennium? That’s not coming for another 986 years. Let the next generation handle it). Back in the basement Luke learns a hard lesson about superiority (scene here: //youtu.be/8GbnMSGXEyE, Alucard may be a dog but he’s definitely a dog I don’t wanna mess with). Also, Seras goes crazy again and destroys all of the ghouls (scene here://youtu.be/HzGcggmH_Sc, is it wrong that a part of me finds it hot when she goes crazy on us?). After all the dust has settle we find out that all the soldiers died in the attack and they still have no leads on who attack them until Integra brings the theory that the Nazis are behind the attack because of the group’s name.

At the start of episode 3 we see that in order to replace the men the Hellsing Organization lost they recruit the Wild Geese a group of trained mercenaries led by possibly the most badass France man (I know, hard to believe right) Pip voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (Sasuke from the Naruto series. Scene here: //youtu.be/6D2Fdp3thCw). They go to the Hellsing organization where as you would expect they don’t believe in the existence of vampires or monsters so Integra decides to show them a real vampire and by real vampire I mean Seras the most least frightening vampire to have ever existed. Walter than comes in to deliver a letter to Integra from the Vatican. Integra and Walter go to the meeting place which is the museum where we get one of the most memorable and funniest scene from the OVAs (scene here: //youtu.be/flQacttO-qw, thank God they have a sense of safety for others otherwise this situation would have been on the evening news). After defusing that bomb (or more like a 1000 bombs) Enrico tells Integra that he has information on Millennium and is willing to share this information at the price of Integra asking him nicely (he wanted to see her nude but he knew that would be overplaying his hand). In the information we find out that Millennium is in truth a left over regiment of Nazis and not just any Nazis crazy Nazis who want to start another war and are creating their own monsters while being led by the El Capitan of crazy people a man that everyone calls the Major voiced by Gildart Jackson. In the information they find out that their base is in Rio, Brazil (???: Jesus wants a hug~. (Nitsuj): Who said that?) so they send Alucard, Pip, and Seras to investigate where Alucard checks into a hotel with coffins as his luggage (scene here: //youtu.be/vDaeSfjlMTo, man TFS was right he really does look like Ozzy Osbourne. That or Calypso from Twisted Metal). That night the Brazil police force under the control of Millennium take an exception to Alucard being in their country so they send the SWAT team to take him and Seras out (but if you’ve been paying attention you would know that this plan isn’t gonna work. Scene here: //youtu.be/-3ktLn2Z5fE?t=2s). After killing all the humans Alucard makes a call (be sure to use Collect) to Integra to get her final word on the situation (What say you milady: //youtu.be/Uw8-GY-0_yw, ma’am yes ma’am). So Alucard checks out of the hotel killing everyone along the way and makes it outside where he meets Tubalcain Alhambra (good luck saying that name three times) aka The Dandy Man an agent of Millennium sent to kill Alucard (scene here: //youtu.be/u-gMjBDxOGc, and Alucard beats royal flush). Pip shows up in a helicopter he hijacked (getting threaten by a France man, what an embarrassment) and the group makes there escape (why? Who’s gonna stop Alucard).

In episode 4 the Queen of England calls for a meeting of the Round Table and Alucard is invited but the only problem is he has no ride back to England that is until Anderson shows up and the two rivals greet each other (scene here: //youtu.be/iljCPV-pr9s, you can just feel their friendship growing). They return to England where we see that Alucard and the Queen have known each other for quite some time (geez the Queen and Alucard friends. Could you imagine if these two got married and Alucard became the next king of England? The world wouldn’t be safe) and he tells them who they’re up against where they get interrupted by a warrant officer of Millennium who delivers from The Major saying that they’re declaring war on everyone. After that scene the Nazis get in their blimps with the main one being called the Deus Ex Machina (good name) and they send one of their agents Rip van Winkle to commandeer a ship announcing their return (scene here: //youtu.be/M0Wc1qlne1I). Back with Alucard, Walter asks him why he turned Seras into a vampire (hey even the undead gets lonely man) to which he responds to saying he found her interesting. She was born an orphan, everyone she cared about was killed and turned into a zombie, and to top it all off she was about to get raped by a vampire priest (and you thought your life was messed up. Try walking a mile in Seras’ shoe). But despite all of this she never gave up she kept on going which Alucard finds fascinating and wants to see how far she’ll go but in order for her to reach the next level she has to taste blood which thanks to Integra she finally does. Getting back to the stolen ship, Hellsing is called in to handle the situation however they’re at a standstill because Winkle has a magic gun that never misses her target so anytime an aircraft gets near the ship she shoots it down but Walter believes there’s one aircraft fast enough to land Alucard on the ship safely. With this aircraft Alucard flies it to the ship and has his fight with Winkle (scenes here: //youtu.be/EUvK8p1J8S0 and //youtu.be/Af208Y8Vv2I, once again it’s sad to see a character like her go. She had a great singing voice). With Winkle defeated and the ship now in Alucard’s control we end the episode with the Major giving a speech about war in what I have to say is one of the most sadistic, deranged, and excellent speeches I’ve heard in an anime (scene here: //youtu.be/RXlmjL3JU4M, just amazing. Hands down one of the best speeches you will ever hear in an anime and I’m probably gonna get some hate from the diehard fans of this series but TFS took this scene and managed to make it a little more compelling and relatable than the original. Scene here: //youtu.be/YWeEZuiUtFA, now don’t get me wrong I still love the original I just felt that TFS took this scene and made it closer to today’s world).

In episode 5 with Alucard stuck on a boat (couldn’t he just turn into a bat and fly back to London) Millennium arrive in London where they plan to start the war and I gotta say these guys are prepared and everything. They a have handbook detailing what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it (scene here: //youtu.be/mfeZe_VdGIE, man you guys are ready for this war aren’t you? Can’t say I’m surprise I mean they’ve been waiting for like 60+ years for this and now the day is finally upon them of course they’re gonna be ready). The Major gives Zorin a female vampire (though at first glance you swear she was a man in drag) the mission of taking out the Hellsing Organization headquarters but he tells her not to take them head on until he arrives with the main force (you want to see them die in front of you don’t you, you sick perverted bastard) and they launch their attack on London (okay where is the London air force? You have an unidentified airship hovering above the city doing nothing for about 15 minutes and then it begins attacking the city and killing thousands of citizens. If this was America that airship would have been shot down within five minutes upon its appearance in the city). And in keeping true with his promise the Major delivers war to the city of London and we see a lot of gory scenes of people dying in the streets, being turned into ghouls, screams of death, the city burning, and the Major eating a juicy steak (the horror of it all). Even Walter somehow manages to get captured in all of this madness. The Nazi army eventually stops her car and she gets saved by the unlikeliest of people, Anderson and the agents of Iscariot (scene here: //youtu.be/1hvMvP07uuE, badass speech Anderson). Anderson and Iscariot defeat the Nazi soldiers to end the episode and after the credits Alucard finally starts to move the ship and make his way back to London.

Again, why didn’t he just turn into a bat and fly back we all know he could do it if he wanted- *hears a noise coming from the attic*. Huh? What was that? Excuse me for a moment *Grabs a flashlight and goes to investigate the noise coming from the attic*. What could be making noise in my att- *suddenly a swarm of bats swoop towards Nitusj and begin flying around him* AHHHHHHHHHHHH~! Bats are back! Bats are back!

*AI girls appear*

(Isis): What is with all the noise?

*Sees a swarm of bats attacking Nitsuj and mistake him for a monster*

(Yin-Yang, Mira and Chibi Isis): AHHHHHHH~!

(Shizuku): Holy shit it’s the Man-Bat! He’s come to drag us to the gates of Hell!

(Seras): Kill it!

*The AI girls begin attacking Nitsuj mercilessly with guns, a whip, daggers, magic AI lightning and Shizuku finishes the job with her hammer. After Shizuku’s attack the bats fly out a nearby window into the sky*

(Shizuku): Another Man-Bat attack safely avoided.

(Chibi Isis): Um Shi-chan that was Nii-chan.

(Shizuku): Woah master that was you this whole time?

(Mira): It would appear that he was trying to scare us with some bat costume. How childish can he be?

(Isis): Master, while I appreciate your passion for Halloween you should know better than to try and scare us like this.

*Isis, Mira, Seras and Shizuku walk away*

(Chibi Isis): Amazing! That was a great costume Nii-chan.

(Yin-Yang): Yeah, you practically had me shaking my tail off. I can’t wait to see the finish costume.

*Chibi Isis and Yin-Yang walk away*

(Nitsuj): *Staggers to get back up* I’m going to take a nap now so we’ll stop here for today and finish up next time. Thanks for reading, I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj as Ani-ween continues MU. . .HA. . .HA. . .HA *falls to the ground and passes out*.
