Project #638: Reincarnated as the 7th Prince

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Being a young sibling is never easy. It’s even harder when you’ve got a lot of siblings to contend with. How do you stand out from pack? Well finding a craft and mastering it sure helps. Hello, Tensei Shitara Dai Nana Ouji Dattanode, Kimamani Majutsu wo Kiwamemasu. A light novel written by Kenkyo na Circle in 2019 and meaning I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability when translated it’s hard to believe this series is only 6 years old but it quickly gained a fanbase. So much so that in 2024 it got an anime adaptation by the relatively new studio Tsumugi Akita Animation Lab. In fact this was there was first major anime. That’s cool, I love looking at the work of new studios. Let’s see why young siblings rule. This is Tensei Shitara Dai Nana Ouji Dattanode, Kimamani Majutsu wo Kiwamemasu.

Opening and Ending Theme

Our opening is “Kyunrious” by Kaede Higuchi. One of my favorite openings from 2024. Kaede is a great singer and it’s just an addicting song to listen to. The whole opening is almost 2 minutes but it feels like 30 seconds. I enjoy the song so much I lose track of time. It’s one of those songs you never skip over and it gets stuck in your head.

The ending is “Happy no Himitsu (The Secret of Happiness)” by Akane Kumada. I thought the song was, meh. Take it or leave it. I do like the slice of life vibe the song is going for but this song easily gets overshadowed by the opening.

Episodes 1-5

So the anime starts on a violent note. A young sorcerer gets killed by the nobles of his country who consider him weak. He dies regretting that he was unable to learn everything about magic and wishes he could be reborn. His wish comes true as he gets reborn as Lloyd the 7th prince of his kingdom (wow, he hit the jackpot in the reincarnation cycle). So Lloyd voice by Makoto Koichi grows up into a femboy (I mean my God that is a fetish character. Look at what he is wearing. Put him in a doujin and then turn that doujin into a hentai and make him an icon in the shotacon community) and spends most of his time studying magic, practicing spells, and sparring with his sword instructor/maid Sylpha who obviously has a thing for him (actually, all the maids do, perverts. Scene here: https://youtu.be/WZJydfaPgAc?si=9WrJcY2V6mtjBuJ4). Because he’s so young when compared to his brothers he’s out of contention for the throne which he’s okay with. All he wants to do is study and master magic and since he was born into the royal family his aptitude for magic is off the charts (he was shooting fireballs the minute he was born). While bathing with the maids (Corbin: Yeah, use that royal privilege. (Baron): Gonna come in handy when puberty hits) he learns about the forbidden library buried beneath the castle. Curious what secrets it holds, Lloyd sneaks down into the library where he unleashes the demon Grimoire who tries to kill him but fails. In order to keep himself from getting killed, Grimoire pledges loyalty to Lloyd and becomes his familiar. Waiting for his chance to strike and take Lloyd down but that’s gonna be impossible as he senses Lloyd’s mana and realizes there’s no way he can beat him.

In episode 2 we meet one of Lloyd’s brothers, Albert, who everyone says is next in line for the throne. The two do seem to get along as Albert recognizes Lloyd’s talent for magic and believes he’ll be a grand sage one day. The next day, Lloyd decides he wants to explore a dungeon but can’t leave as everyone will panic if they can’t find him. So he creates a clone of himself and implants Grimoire’s mind in the body to cover for him while he’s out. As Lloyd looks for a dungeon he comes across a skilled adventurer named Tao who uses qi to fight (scene here: https://youtu.be/D3LlBOG6TuQ?si=gciTCID1BLkVcqDL). Sensing Lloyd, she rushes out over believing him to be an enemy. Not wanting to reveal his true identity, Lloyd uses an illusion spell to hide his true form and appear more adult (still got that trap face) which Tao likes (she’s looking. . . for a man). Lloyd now calling himself Robert enters a dungeon with Tao where he collects some magic crystals and learns how to use qi from Tao (scene here: https://youtu.be/ixbLkXfGZGQ?si=LQozLIfJIK_TennZ). They clear the dungeon only to find a lich waiting for them in the treasure chest.

In the first half of episode 3 Lloyd and Tao fight the lich. At first, Tao blasts Lloyd away in order to protect him but he returns to save her and defeats the Lich by combining qi and mana (because why do one when you can do both. Scene here: https://youtu.be/v8Pzv6XZAfw?si=LDUYC59S75s8PILB). Lloyd returns to the palace where he spends the second half of the episode creating mana essence to enhance weapons. He gets silver from his dad, oil from Sylpha, and haematide from the garden. He gets Albert’s knights to hand over their weapons to be enhanced. Out of 120 swords only 50 of them were a success. Technically 80, but he got overzealous and tried to add more spells to the sword causing them to fall apart (a lesson in not overdoing it).

In episode 4 Lloyd wants to see his swords in action so Albert invites him and Sylpha on a monster hunt with him and his knights. While out on the hunt they run into Tao who doesn’t get along with Sylpha because she keeps looking at Lloyd sensing Robert (they’re like cats fighting over food). She’s here on a quest to fix up an old shrine which might explain all the monsters in the area. Speaking of monsters, they do get attacked by one at night where Sylpha finally gets the gets the chance to show off and we see just how powerful she is as she completely owns a powerful monster single-handedly (scene here: https://youtu.be/jm1aNyoEjHs?si=heu5YQHR69UvPIA-, only natural for an OP character to have an OP maid). Grimoire reveals that the monsters are being controlled by a demon named Pazuzu (https://youtu.be/hZqeR8EVFKY?si=XdyTsnZTZhAwp7ZM).

Pazuzu appears in episode 5 releasing a miasma that knocks out everyone except Tao and Lloyd (of course). After Tao gets swallowed by one of the monsters, Lloyd figures he might as well do something. Using mana transformation he learned from Grimoire, he’s able to turn the monsters back to their original form and then focuses on Pazuzu (scene here: https://youtu.be/hxgJ0lFlFBk?si=-iu5WJ_vfXqHZHfr). Lloyd manages to destroy Pazuzu quite easily and his mana gets absorbed by Grimoire to make himself stronger so that he can enact his revenge on Lloyd (by the time you’re strong enough to beat him he’ll have died from old age). Once they return home, Albert makes the plea with the king that Lloyd should be considered for the royal succession as well but he delightfully declines. After this, we see one of the monsters followed Lloyd home to become his pet named Shiro (no doubt under the impression that he’s a girl thanks to the way he dresses and those thighs. Man, the author’s fetish is on full display with this character).

Episodes 6-10

In episode 6 Lloyd is having trouble teaching Shiro how to do tricks. He understands basic commands but can’t do the complex ones. Even with Lloyd using his mana to explain it to him (anyone would have a tough time following Lloyd’s complex commands). In order to get help, he goes to meet one of his sisters, Alieze, the 6th princess (6th!? The king has seven boys and at least six girls? (Corbin): The king has quite the energy. (Baron): I aspire to have that energy). She’s an animal lover and her favorite animal just happens to be Lloyd (Corbin: She’s about to become a brother lover in a few minutes). After observing her, he figures out that the key is sharing his will with Shiro and not just issuing the commands. Along with Alieze we get to meet some of Lloyd’s other siblings. There’s Dian the fourth prince who is a blacksmith and is interested in Lloyd’s enchanting. He wants to understand how Lloyd was able to do it. After seeing Lloyd’s enchantment he conceives that it’s the real deal and wants his help in making the ultimate spellbound sword. Lloyd agrees (sweet Lord, his blacksmith clothes are making me feel things I thought only women should. (Baron): Not into femboys but I’d hit that) and they get to work but the spells just keep destroying the steel. It turns out that the mana essence they’re using is bottom shelf, not enough haematide, they need more concentrated essence for this to work. In order to get the hatmatide they need monster cores so Lloyd becomes an adventurer. He joins the guild along with Sylpha who used to be an A-rank adventurer but retired after becoming a maid. Because she’s signing back up to be an adventurer she gets bumped down to a C-rank while Lloyd is an E-rank and they need a B-rank adventurer in order to explore dungeons. Luckily, Tao arrives and offers to go with them. In pursuit of finding Robert (look in front of you), she cleared enough dungeons to become an A-rank adventurer. They enter a dungeon, manage to steal the heart, and use it in their experiment. It works as they’re able to make their spellbound sword.

At the start of episode 7 Lloyd senses an assassin on the palace grounds. He goes to face them where he meets Ren a girl who has blight mana (and is possibly an exhibitionist if her lack of outfit is anything to go by). Blight mana gives the user special abilities not found or seen in other mages. For Ren, her body constantly secretes poison. Not even a purifying spell can stop its effects. Ren escapes but Lloyd chases after her and arrives at the Assassin’s guild a collection of five criminals each with Blight mana. Lloyd takes on all of them except for Ren because if she releases her poison everyone will feel the effects of it (scene here: https://youtu.be/GxbgBAR2a6U?si=zHYfQZ9ECC0IAaJp). Through the fights, Lloyd discovers that they can’t control their blight mana (it’s constantly on) and they curse themselves for it. Lloyd manages to seal their powers by writing runes on their body. Thanks to those runes, they can turn their powers on and off whenever they choose (not sure what the lanky guy was complaining about, he had it good). They welcome Lloyd into their ranks as an honorary member and tell him the story of their leader, Jade, who had it the worst out of all of them. He could teleport but it would always be at random and he would be taken to random locations. As they talk they receive a letter from Jade telling them to come to Lordost a kingdom currently at odds with Lloyd’s kingdom. Once Slypha and Albert hear about this they think Lloyd has been taken captive by the Assassin’s guild under orders from Lordost and prepare for war (going to war over a shota. I’ve seen lesser things start a war).

At the start of episode 8 we find out that Jade overthrew the rulers of Lordost who were preparing for war and has now become a lord ready to welcome them to his manor (all by yourself? That’s awesome). However, Lloyd reveals that it’s a trap. Curious about what’s going on, Lloyd and the others head to Lordost where we see that Jade has been possessed by a demon named Guisarme, some kind of psychic ghost-like demon that possesses the bodies of others. They kill the mind of the host and take the body for themselves (along with the powers and everything). The real Jade is dead and now Guisarme plans to use their bodies for the rest of his gang.

Episode 9 sees Lloyd fight against Guisarme who we find is on the level of a demon lord so we actually have an even match between him and Lloyd (nice). While Lloyd is fighting, the assassin guild tries to escape but get trapped by the other psychic ghosts. Luckily (I think. It all depends on how you look at it), Slypha and Albert arrive with their army.

In the final episodes (10-12) we see Slypha and Albert fight against the army ghost demons while Lloyd fights against Jade. They all manage to defeat the ghosts and Lloyd makes the remaining members of the Assassin’s guild his personal retainers with Ren becoming his maid.

Final Thoughts

This anime has it’s number of faults and tropes, but overall better than what I was expecting. Lloyd is actually a good character. He loves magic and everything about it. He wants to uncover the secrets of every aspect of it. He honestly believes that every type of magic can existence can be used for good in some way no matter what. He’s also a kind person who cares for his family, friends, and servants. While Lloyd is good it’s honestly the side characters who are my favorite. I like Albert being this caring and doting older brother. At first, I thought this was all just an act, but nope, he honestly loves and cares for Lloyd like a normal brother should. Even though he’s the favorite for the throne he’s prepared to hand it over to his other siblings if he thinks they’re the better person for the job than him. The rest of the siblings we’ve seen so far are also like this. They all care and love each other like actual siblings. I don’t sense any hint of jealousy or malice they have for each other and I like how they all have their own little hobbies they’re passionate about. My favorite character is Slypha. I like how she messes with our expectations as this serious powerful maid, but in truth, she’s a fangirl for Lloyd and will do anything to keep him safe and keep him to herself. I think Tao might be the weakest character to me personality wise. I like her fighting style but the fact that she’s just this thirsty girl looking for a hot guy really makes her a one-note character. Her saving grace being that she has a bit of a rivalry with Slypha which adds to her character. Grimoire is also funny. I like how he starts off as a demon hoping to undermine Lloyd and beat him but as time goes realizes that he can’t beat him and even starts to like and respect Lloyd.

The animation is just good. Character designs really don’t stand out except for Lloyd’s. That girlish-looking boy is definitely a fetish character and by God it works. Seriously, that’s kind of what made me want to check out the anime in the first place. I will say Lloyd’s magic effects look cool. It’s like an explosion of color. The fanservice moments are good and don’t go too overboard. The bath scenes are as raunchy as it gets and they only use it like two times. The music is generic. It’s basic fantasy music and nothing really stands out to me. Speaking of fantasy I do like how the monsters aren’t your typical monsters you see in fantasy. The author does get creative with these monsters and presents something new and unique you normally don’t see in these kinds of stories.

Final Score

Reincarnated as the 7th Prince earns a 6/10. Like I said, not a bad anime and better than I was expecting. It’s not a masterpiece but it’s a fun watch with good laughs, characters, and fanservice. With the second season set to come out soon I am curious to see what’s next for Lloyd and want to see the other siblings. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
