Hey guys! Justin here and welcome to another edition of the Otaku Mind. Today once again we are celebrating a vocaloid birthday and yes I know some of you out there are getting tired of these birthdays but rest assure this is the last vocaloid birthday for a while and next month I’ll go back to anime/manga topics. But for now, we celebrate the birthday of Kaito. Released around the same time as Meiko, Kaito has had many personality traits added onto him over the years. He’s an ice cream lover, a flirting idiot who goes from Meiko to Miku or Miku to Meiko, a vocaloid who knows he’s a vocaloid and secretly longs to be a human being, and a tortured soul. Yeah Kaito has a lot of traits and surprisingly he’s my least favorite of the vocaloids. I don’t really like his voice all that much and a lot of his songs are a miss for me so I really had to dig deep down and really find some good songs from this character that I like. But in the end I managed to do it and today in honor of Kaito’s birthday I’m here to count down my top 11 songs from Kaito. Why top 11? Because even when I’m not in character I still like to go one step beyond. Let’s get ready, these are the top 11 Kaito songs.
#11. Judgement of Corruption
It’s the return of the Story of Evil. This time we’re looking at Kaito’s song and his sin is greed. In the song Kaito plays a corrupted judge who in exchange for bribes let’s anyone go no matter how heinous or vile the crime all while saying money is the best lawyer in Hell. We also get a little side story such as seeing how he wants all this money in the hopes of helping his daughter who can’t walk anymore and how he wants to find all the fragments of the 7 deadly sins believing that he’ll be allowed one wish (you’re thinking of Dragonballs. Far east of your location). One day Kaito allows an evil general to go free and this causes a civil war to erupt within his country where he and his daughter are killed in a fire. He arrives at the gates of hell where the Grim Reaper (who I believe is Gumi) says she’ll let him be reborn if he pays her all of his fortune. He says no and falls into Hell where he vows to create a paradise for him and his daughter. Once again we get some dark stuff here. I do like the instrumental to this song. The trumpet and violin really steal the show for me and Kaito’s singing here is actually very good and flows naturally. While the Kagamine’s may have the two most well-known songs from the series this song is also good and well worth checking out especially the next song after this one which ties it all together.
#10. Japanese Banquet Song
Considered by many to be Kaito’s catchiest song this is pretty self-explanatory. Demons and gods of Japanese mythology have gathered in the human world where they have a party and dance the night away. The melody to this song is very catchy and yeah Kaito sounds great here. It really does feel like a party is about to happen and everyone seems to enjoying themselves. It’s a simple and catchy song that I surprisingly like and enjoy hearing it from time to time.
#9. Cherry Blossom Blizzard in the Sullen Sky
A beautiful and sad song from Kaito. In this song Kaito has just got done burying someone he loves on a hill where a cherry blossom tree grows. He then begins to reminisce about that person such as how she loved flowers as well as the cherry blossom tree. As the song goes on he even starts to compare that person to the cherry blossom tree saying how winter has come for them but spring will come and soon they will blossom again. What I’m trying to say is that even though the person Kaito cares about is dead he will never forget her for as long as he lives. Yeah if you guys are like me you’re beginning to notice that Kaito has a lot of sad but beautiful songs which are in my opinion his specialty.
#8. Crescent Moon
Possibly one of the most beautiful Vocaloid songs out there. In the song Kaito is a soldier who I believe has to leave his hometown and go off to war. That means he’s leaving behind all of his friends and the person he loves so he sings about how he hopes to one day return to his home and embrace the person he loves forever. Another interpretation of this that I’ve heard is regret. Many people like to relate this song to another song called Senbonzakura a popular song that talks about war. Some people like to say this song took place after Senbonzakura and Kaito is regretting some of the actions he did in the war such as killing people and now wonders if he’ll see the person he loves again after the war is over. Will that person still love him after all the acts he’s committed or will he be left alone in the rain to suffer for his actions? The song is both sad, beautiful, and deep and I do like the animation in the video for this song. War has a way of changing people and causes them to do stuff they never thought they would do but as long as there’s someone out there for them I think in the end they’ll be fine and come out alright.
#7. Palette
While originally sung by Luka I think Kaito’s version is the overall better of the two and that’s saying something considering how Luka’s voice is considered the best out of all the Vocaloids. This song is basically Kaito telling someone he loves them and wants to be there for them no matter what. It’s a short song but it’s a very powerful song with an amazing instrumental and very deep and beautiful lyrics that always blows you away whenever you listen to it.
#6. Wireless Idol/ Idol Radio
This is a short but very majestic and sad song. The whole song just serves as the debut of Kaito’s new voicebank which sounds clearer and better than the previous one. At the start of the song we get the original voicebank where Kaito sounds a little distorted but in the second half of the song we get his new voicebank where he sounds better and takes another step forward in sounding like an actual person. I especially love the music in the background, it sets the tone and everything for what the song is about and how Kaito feels. He’s scared about this change and is unsure if people will accept it or if even he himself will accept it. All he can do is just continue to move forward and face these changes head on hoping for the best.
#5. Morning Call
It’s the return of Oster Project. I love these guys they always do such great work with the Vocaloids and this song is no exception. In the song Kaito and Miku are in a relationship and every morning Kaito gets a morning call from her that always makes his mornings great. However, they have a disagreement one day and stop talking to each other for a while until Kaito finally calls her up and apologizes where she also apologizes and they get back together where Kaito decides he’ll give her a morning call instead of her giving him one. Like all of Oster Project’s songs this song is cute, catchy, and upbeat. I also like the animation used for the song. It looks like an anime from the 90s which is what I think they were going for and it looks nice. If you’re looking for a cute, catchy, and upbeat song from Kaito than look no further. This is the song for you.
#4. Pane Dhiria
https://youtu.be/cUT2HLdefg8 (live)
One of Kaito’s most popular and well-known songs and it’s one of the few songs he sings at live concerts. It’s a folk song where Kaito sings about how he quelled the anger of the gods in Heaven by playing for them a beautiful song. The song is a mixture of Japanese and a made up language that the producer for the song created which is quite common in folk songs. I really do love Kaito’s dancing throughout the song and I have to give props to the producer for getting Kaito’s voice so high pitched. That’s not an easy task. Is Kaito’s tale true? Did he really play a song for the gods and quelled their anger? Who knows? But one thing we can agree on is that this song is good and enjoyable to listen to.
#3. A Thousand Year Solo
https://youtu.be/vwqJVP8zFLA (live)
It’s another folk song and one of Kaito’s most famous songs ever. I know a lot of people prefer Pane Dhira over this one but personally I think this song is the better of the two. In the song Kaito sings a song to someone very dear to him even though that person has died a long, long time ago while he still remains alive because he’s an artificial being so he can continue to live. But despite knowing all of this he still continues to sing in honor of that person as this is his way of remembering that person and I think that’s what the producer was going for with this song. We are all going to die someday, for some of us it will be quick and painless, for others it will slow and painful, and for the very few of us it will be like getting a root canal at the dentist office. Long, painful, annoying, and expensive. But even in death we all leave behind some legacy. Whether it be a child, a movie, a memory, or even a song we all leave something behind in this world for people to remember us by. Even though the producer of this song will one day wither away this song that he has created will continue to be heard for generations and he will never be forgotten.
#2. Yes Yes
Kaito is singing in English again and once again he sounds good. In the song Kaito talks about moving in with his new girlfriend and things seem to be going well until he receives a call from his ex. At first he ignores the call but decides to reach out and say hi to her where the old flames of love start back up again and I assume he starts to date his ex behind his current girlfriend’s back. She finds out about this and rather than get mad actually allows Kaito to keep seeing his ex and her as well. I don’t know how he pulled it off or what magic he used but in the end he somehow winds up living with both of them. So who’s the bigger playboy, Kaito or Len? Anyway, the song is still good. Kaito’s English sounds great here and I do like the techno pop beat they have playing throughout the song. It’s really addicting to listen to. It’s a bit sleazy but I still like this song and look forward to hearing Kaito sing more English songs in the future.
And the number one Kaito song is. . .
#1. Cantarella (Grace Edition)
This song is a remake of the original song Cantarella which is a good song but the Grace Edition is the better song in my opinion. The first one moved a bit too slow for me and Kaito didn’t have as much passion and energy as he did in the Grace Edition. The song talks about Kaito trying to keep his love for Miku hidden but still approaching her hoping to earn her trust and lower her defenses until he can finally get close to her and make her fall for him. This song is actually based off a manga called Cantraella where Kaito and Miku play brother and sister who are in an incestuous relationship with each other. In fact many people thought the song was about Kaito planning to rape Miku which at one point in the manga he thought about doing it but didn’t go through with the act. I like the tempo of this song. It has the right about of speed and energy to it and Kaito really does sound great here. This is probably the best I’ve ever heard him sing and he knocks it out of the park. While Kaito may be my least favorite Vocaloid I have to admit that when given the right songs and tuned correctly he’s really worth listening to.
Well that’s my list. I hope you enjoyed. Happy birthday Kaito and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
