Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Seeing as how we’re on the eve of Aniween, it only seems right that I review something horror related and I think I have just the thing. Remember back in July when I reviewed Goblin Slayer with Seras and Isis? We talked about there being a movie that would be coming out soon and about a day or so after we got done reviewing the anime the movie came out on Crunchyroll. I swear, we didn’t plan this. I wasn’t expecting the movie to be out until at the end of year, but surprises are apart of life. Goblin’s Crown is the title of the movie. It was released in February of this year where surprisingly this was a short movie. It’s only about an hour long. In fact, they actually showed a 25-minute recap of the anime just to reach that hour and a half mark. Because of the movie’s short runtime it really didn’t feel necessary for all of us to review it. So we decided who would get to review it with a friendly game of last person standing. Since I’m here, feel safe to assume that I won. With that said let’s take a look at the movie. This is my review of Goblin’s Crown.
The movie starts with a group of adventurers fighting a bunch of goblins in the snowy mountains. They manage to beat all the goblins and continue on their adventure. After that, Guts receives a request from the Sword Maiden to venture to the snowy region to find the adventurers we just saw who have gone missing. It turns out one of the adventurers is the daughter of a noble house (for the sake of this review I will call her Ella) and they want her found. Since the quest she was on involved slaying goblins (sounds like she and Guts will get along just fine), Guts agrees to take on the quest along with his party (can’t help but feel that Ryu should’ve sat this one out. Since he’s cold-blooded and all). We jump to Guts and the others in a village that the adventurers were last seen in where they’re fighting against goblins who took over the place. They managed to kill all of them except for one which they allowed to escape because Guts poisoned him and he wants that goblin to spread the disease to the rest of the nest (scene here: https://youtu.be/RbbXK-u6HUA). After resting for a night, Guts and the others head to the location of where the goblin nest is where they raid with Guts noticing how smart and advanced they are despite not having a shaman or hobgoblin with them and there seems to be no signs of an ogre or other creature leading them (possibly a human or a dark elf perhaps? Scene here: https://youtu.be/bI_TWOW8AJY). They manage to find Ella who’s still alive and was passed out on a shrine where they branded her with the mark of the God of Wisdom as well as the green moon which is where goblins presumably come from. With all this information, Guts and the others believe that goblins are being led by a goblin paladin (https://youtu.be/_oRiWJWXVPM).
We get a flashback showing what happened to Ella and her party. Just like Guts and the others they too found the nest of the goblins and caged them in trying to starve them out and then kill them when they tried to break the cage. The plan worked for a few days but than one day the goblins stopped trying to break through and the adventurers continued to camp out not wanting to retreat out of fear of being laughed at for not defeating a bunch of goblins. As days went by the group was tired, hungry, and irritated with Ella as they forced her to return to the village to get food and supplies. As Ella was returning with the food and supplies, the goblins ambushed her after having already killed her party members and of course raped her (scene here: https://youtu.be/KyrTHqKkmCA, well at least there was no controversy surrounding the rape this time. . .yet). Returning to the present, Ella wakes up back in the village where she tells Guts what happened (the less graphical the better please). Later that night, Guts suspects that goblins are using a dwarf fortress as their main base of operations and makes plans to attack it. Ella wants in to get revenge as well as her sword back (but mostly revenge) and Guts allows her to join the party. The next morning Guts dyes his armor in black (which I’m not gonna lie, he looks even more badass) along with Ryu and Suzuki who also wear black clothing and carry the girls in a cage to present them as an offering to the goblins. The plan works as they get bought inside and get bought down to the dungeons where they find a few more survivors and Ella lets her anger get the best of her and jumps the shaman killing him with her bare hands (scene here: https://youtu.be/_ASEzVeCEAk, that’s badass). After calming her down, they change back into their regular clothes (no~. keep the black armor) and get into position to attack. We finally get to see the goblin paladin who looks pretty menacing as he’s taller than the other goblins, wearing armor from head to toe for protection, seems intelligent, and has Ella’s sword. The goblins start to do some ritual which causes the brand on Ella to cause her pain and this blows away their position.
After the group gets discovered the rest of the movie is all one big action scene from here. Fae, Suzuki, and Ryu get the rest of the prisoners to safety while Guts, Hikari, and Ella distract the goblins. After killing many goblins, Guts and the others reunite with the rest of the team who managed to get the other prisoners out safely and begin running down the mountain with the goblins chasing after them. Guts takes on the goblin paladin where he manages to cut his head off and retrieve Ella’s sword. Ella then uses her lightning magic to cause an avalanche and wipe out the remaining goblins with ease (scene here: https://youtu.be/jL17UkoZc8o, another fun adventure. Courtesy of the Goblin Slayer). After this, the movie wraps up with a new year’s party at the guild. Ella decides to head back home, talk to her parents, and give her party a proper burial. As for Guts, he’s out camping and on the lookout in case goblins attack. Hikari comes to join him where he wishes her a happy new year and hopes that she’ll continue to help him out this year as well (aww~ he does care for her).
Final Thoughts
There’s not much to say about this movie. It’s pretty straight forward and I enjoyed it a lot. It’s nothing special nor does it add anything new to the series, it plays out like an extended episode and I’m okay with that. The first half is slow and builds up the story, characters, and main villain while the second half delivers on the goblin slaying action we all know and love. The animation and music are the same here as the anime and the action was good. I did like how Guts outsmarted the goblin paladin to beat him. The story of Ella is sad as well as she had these dreams of being an adventurer, but she unfortunately underestimated her opponent and it cost her big time. I especially like the ending with Guts and Hikari by the campfire and Guts hoping that she’ll continue to be by his side in the coming year. It shows just how much he values her not only as a party member but as a friend as well.
Final Score
The final score for Goblin’s Crown is a 7/10. If you liked the anime and wanted to see some more Goblin Slayer check this movie out. Once again there’s been no word on the release of a second season as of yet but I’m sure a second season will be coming out next year if not 2022. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
