Episodes 16-20
We start the second part of the series where we left off last episode. Tai’s group finds themselves back in the real world where the blackout disaster has past and everything is fine (too fine). The group decides to go to their respective houses and check on their families, but they can’t shake the feeling that something is off (you mean besides the fact that nobody is talking about the disaster or taking notice of the Digimon? Granted, Japan is used to seeing weird things, but I think this would at least turn some heads). Everyone finally realizes something is wrong when they can’t leave the train station and we get a pretty good scare from the people who begin to glitch on us (not gonna lie this scared me a little bit when I first watched it. Good job, Digimon). Things get even scarier when we see the Digimon behind this is Eyesmon (its got its eyes on you). Eyesmon created an artificial digital Tokyo to trap the group in, so that it could destroy them. Tai and the others fight back where they’re forced to go ultimate on the Eyesmon when it reveals its full body (and this fight does a good job giving us an idea into how a champion level can match up to a ultimate level. Eyesmon simply absorbed enough data and energy from Tokyo that it can match the strength of an ultimate level Digimon. That’s pretty clever and makes sense). Matt’s group arrives and come to the conclusion that Eyesmon is responsible for the blackout in Tokyo, so the group combine their powers to beat Eyesmon. However, Eyesmon isn’t fully destroyed yet and takes on the form of a snake to continue the fight.
So in episode 17 Eyesmon evolved into Orochimon (okay, not sure how an eye monster evolved into a creature of Japanese lore. Whoops to Darwinism). Their first fight against Orochimon doesn’t go well as the group is still exhausted from their fight with Eyesmon and are forced to retreat in the digital Tokyo where Orochimon can’t find them (Orochimon: Hmm~, really starting to miss my infinite eyes. Why did I become a bunch of snakes in the first place? How does that work?). After resting and cheering each other up, the group once again fights Orochimon using coordinated attacks and manage to destroy the main head to defeat it (this was a good fight. Nice teamwork and I like how they didn’t just use brute force to take it down. That’s the one thing I am liking with this reboot. Much smarter fighting on the part of the characters). With Orochimon defeated, the group thinks that the real world should be safe now but nope, a countdown soon appears signally the end. On a related note, we actually see TK is still in the real world and Kari got separated from her mom (yeah, I’m interested in seeing what the show will do with them. How will TK get to the Digital World and how will Kari’s character be handled?).
The fight to save Tokyo continues in episode 18. Orochimon is still alive (God, this thing is a pain in the ass just like the one in folklore). It steals power from the real world to digivovle into Nihoggmon a mega level Digimon (we are seriously stepping into Shin Megami Tenshi territory here). Izzy theorizes that when the counter reaches zero, Nihoggmon will unleash all of its energy which will destroy all of Tokyo in one blast (way to steal a page from Freiza). Thankfully, Agumon and Gabumon evolve into Omegamon and finally (and I mean finally) defeat Nihoggmon to save Tokyo and restore power. Just when you think they can finally take a moment to breath, Devimon shows up and blasts everyone but Tai and Matt away (can we please have one moment to breath!?). Back in the real world a strange phenomenon happens with Kari and TK where they see their crest and I believe TK got transported to the Digital World.
In episode 19 we find out that Izzy, Sora, Joe, and Mimi returned to Tokyo (the real one. . .hopefully) however they can’t find their Digimon. Tai and Matt are still in the Digital World and decide to continue on their journey to find the Holy Digimon while Izzy and the others try to find their Digimon and get a status on what’s happening in Tokyo (yes, like how there was no looting. Especially in Akihabara). As Tai and Matt continue to their destination, they run into Valvemon (wow, those dead eyes are really scaring me. It’s like it’s staring into my soul) who is carrying an army of Digimon inside of it. The army Digimon surround Tai and the others where they’re about to be eliminated until they get saved by Leomon (let’s see if this season likes to kill him off as well) and his army. Leomon feeds the group and tells them how he and his army are trying to steal back the Holy Digimon and the group decides to join him on his mission. They break into Valvemon and make their way down into the cargo hold where they get confronted by Minotaurmon the commander of this nightmarish fortress (the eyes of Valvemon will hunt my dreams) and Bullmon (is there a Taurusmon we should know about?). They defeat Minotaurmon and Bullmon (Bullmon: That’s bull~) and they see that the cargo Minotaurmon was transporting wasn’t the Holy Digimon but instead TK.
Before Matt can rescue TK from his capsule, he gets abducted by Velgrmon the dark bird. Velgrmon destroys Valvemon with one shot, but Tai and the others escape in the nick of time. Leomon stays behind to fight off another Digimon while Tai and Matt go after TK (follow that bird of death). Meanwhile, back in the real world, Izzy and Sora are able to get into contact with Tentomon and the other Digimon who are stuck in the Net (be careful not to fall into those 18+ sites. Stay away from fanfiction sites as well). Back in the Digital World, Tai and Matt manage to rescue TK (with Weregurumon surfing on Metalgreymon’s missile. So cool) from Velgrmon but aren’t nearly strong enough to defeat it. The group soon finds themselves at the mercy of Velgrmon until TK’s desire to protect his brother and friends awaken Angemon the Holy Digimon they’ve been searching for this whole time. With Angemon’s help Metalgreymon and Weregururmon defeat Velgrmon. However, the battle exhausted all of his powers and he reverts back into an egg for TK to take care of (oh~, so we’re going to scar him again?) only to have the egg snatched by Skullknightmon (just how many agents does Devimon have?).
Episodes 21-25
A lot of good stuff in episode 21. Tai, Matt and TK chase after Skullknightmon where they arrive at Devimon’s castle (welcome to Castlevania: Digimon Edition). Metalgreymon and Weregurumon take on Splashmon the creature of the miasma where they just can’t match the strength of this strange creature (which looks like a melted version of Gurumon). In a rather cool moment, we get a shout out to Rizegreymon (which is honestly a better ultimate evolution than Metalgreymon in my opinion) where Metalgreymon’s arm transforms into a railgun and he uses that to defeat Splashmon (why they didn’t just have him evolve into Rizegreymon is beyond me). While that was going on, TK takes on an active role and actually goes down into a ravine where he finds out that the land Devimon’s castle is on is actually on the back of a Digimon named Eldoradimon (this is like something out of Legend of Zelda or One Piece). As for the others, they have their own little story as well. Calamaramon (I’ll have the calamary) is interfering with the navigational system of a ship and unless the others stop her that ship is going to crash into the city.
In episode 22 Tai, Matt and TK enter Eldoradimon in search of the Holy Digimon. With TK leading the way, they find the Holy Digimon with Skullknightmon who is about to dip the egg into miasma thus turning the Holy Digimon into a dark Digimon (oh cool, a dark Angemon). Agumon and Gabumon take on Skullknightmon who evolves into Darkknightmon while TK tries to save the Holy Digimon (I do like how TK is taking on a more active role this time around. In the first season he didn’t do much except stand on the sidelines. This is mostly because he was the youngest of the group and I guess you could say they didn’t want to put him in harms way. As the season went on he started to become a little more active and fight more, but when he did the season was wrapping up. Here, he’s not afraid to back down from a fight and wants to help the group out even if that means endangering his life. Matt is also done better this time as well. He’s protective of TK but not too protective of him that he treats him like a helpless child and looks down on him. Does he want TK to be put into this danger? No. But if there’s no other option the least he can do is act like an older brother, protect him when he needs protecting, and trust him to make the right decisions). With the help of Matt, TK is able to save the Holy Digimon before being dropped into the miasma and just like how Metalgreymon got a different weapon last episode, Weregarurumon also gets a weapon. Weregarurumon’s desire to protect both Matt and TK unlocks his new weapons which are metal wings and cyber swords (at first this felt strange, but given the fact that he evolves into Metalgarurumon, this makes sense). With these new weapons, Weregarurumon is able to defeat Darkknightmon and the Holy Digimon hatches into Poyomon (hard to believe that thing is going to become an angel). With Darkknightmon defeated, Devimon finally makes his entrance ready to fight (if you want something done right, do it yourself). There’s also the substory of the others fighting against Calamaramon, but they don’t focus on it all that much. I wanna say the group defeated her, but they leave it in the air (I’m really confused why they got sent back. We’re finally getting our final boss battle and they won’t be participating).
It’s the battle against Devimon in episode 23 where the animation seems to be lacking a little bit (seriously, Metalgreymon and Weregururumon take a beating from Devimon and yet there’s no signs of damage on their bodies at all. Devimon’s attacks look and sound devastating, but they don’t feel devastating). So as you would imagine Tai and Matt struggle to defeat Devimon and gets even harder when he evolves into Neodevimon (the new Devilman looks fierce). Meanwhile, the others are also struggling against Calamaramon where we find out the tower she’s guarding is sending power to Neodevimon thus making him stronger (and causing ships to smash into the city, but that’s not important). The others manage to defeat Calamaramon and destroy the tower sending data to Neodevimon. This allows the ships to regain control of their navigational systems and avoid crashing into the city (and they avoid collateral damage and layoffs). Back in the Digital World, Tai and Matt take advantage of a weakened Neodevimon and defeat him (wow, I was expecting them to go mega or traumatize TK again). However, Neodevimon doesn’t stay down for long as Darkknightmon revives him in his mega form, Donedevimon (which is the stuff of nightmares).
In episode 24 Donedevimon attacks where it knocks out Matt and Weregarurumon, infects Tai and Metalgreymon with miasma, and even tries to attack TK. Tai becomes consumed by rage and this rage carries over to Metalgreymon who begins to digievolve into Machinedremon (I heard people say it was an incomplete Blitzgreymon which would have been badass to see, but no, it’s Machinedremon. Honestly, I was hoping to see Skullgreymon). At first, it seems like the incomplete Machinedremon will win, but Donedevimon turns the tables because of Machinedremon’s reckless fighting. Thankfully, Angemon uses its powers to reach the mind of Agumon and calm him down. This allows us to get an incomplete look at Wargreymon who manages to slice through Donedevimon and end him (is he dead this time for sure?). We also get Patamon as well.
At the start of episode 25, Tai and the others begin to fall from the sky along with Eldoradimon (say what now?). Apparently, everything they’ve seen so far has been on a cloud continent (I get it. That’s pretty clever). As they fall, they get attacked by Mamemon and Bigmamemon who blow up anything that gets close to them (geez, it’s like the Digimon version of Voltorb). Tai and the others get saved by Leomon and his gang (oh yeah, I forgot about them) and then save Eldoradimon by using the Bigmamemon as cushions to ease its fall into the ocean. Back in the real world, Izzy and the others are still trying to save ships. Despite defeating Calamaramon, ships are still crashing into each other and it looks like a war could start from it (all because of ships crashing into each other the world is going to start WW3. Not surprising). The Digimon discover a big infestation of Zurumon which is just too much for the group to take out on their own.
Episodes 26-31
Episode 26 is a great episode. While Tai and the others are sailing the ocean on Eldoradimon’s back (it owes them that much) they see a Seadramon (Matt’s old nemesis) fight a Ebidramon where the Seadramon actually eats the Ebidramon and evolves into Waruseadramon (the virus version of Megaseadramon). Waruseadramon alerts the others in the area about food and they attack Eldoradimon. We get a good sea battle where Tai and the others fight against the Eldoradimon where we actually get to see blood from the Digimon (granted it’s digital blood and blue, but they still show blood in a technical sense). Back in the real world, Izzy hacks into a boat in Yokohama and relays an emergency signal to a nearby ship to help guide them hoping that they pass on the signal to other ships. Thankfully, this works as the ship relays the signal to other ships and so on saving everyone and preventing WW3. The Zurumon leave and eventually disappear, but the group notices some kind of dark data returning to the Digital World and want to investigate it. The problem is they don’t know how to get to the Digital World (Kari, your time to shine). Luckily, Kari was there and watching them (I honestly like how she was polite and didn’t disturb them) where she says she hears a voice and all of a sudden a light encapsulates everyone and transports all of them to the Digital World. They arrive in time to save Tai and the others from the Waruseadramon and we finally see Kari in the Digital World (and now the whole band is all here).
In episode 27, the group trade information with each other. Izzy tells Tai and Matt about the Zurumon causing a disturbance in the real world and he believes a new evil Digimon is behind this. As for Kari (who gives us the most adorable and creepiest blank looks I’ve ever seen on a character. Seriously, it’s like her soul left her body), she travels still talking about the voice she heard and isn’t the least bit shocked about Digimon. As they approach the new continent a storm strikes and the group is forced to abandon Eldoradimon, Leomon, and the others. They make it to the continent where they’re attacked by Tortamon and then Groudramon who proves to be a difficult opponent for the group but they manage to beat it by overloading it with data only for Darkknightmon to show up (can’t we get a second to catch our breath?). With everyone exhausted, TK and Patamon step up to fight with Patamon evolving into Angemon (and no tension was felt that day).
At the start of episode 28 Angemon takes on Darkknightmon. Despite the build up to his evolution having no tension the fight is actually decent and intense (even if it is short). Angemon manages to defeat Darkknightmon (shame, I was expecting him to play a major role in the coming episodes). Their battle unfortunately splits the group up from each other and they all land in different locations from each other. Tai and Agumon wind up with Kari in the forest where they get attacked by Volcdoramon (a dinosaur with a volcano on its back. Can’t help but feel they stole this idea from Pokémon). There’s this black lightning that seems to be making Volcdoramon stronger, but Metalgreymon is able to beat it and give us another preview of Wargreymon (building him up big time). After the fight, Kari gets captured by a returning Skullknightmon (oh hey, they’re keeping him around. That’s awesome) who flies away with her.
Nothing much happens in episode 29, but it is an intense episode. Tai and Agumon chase after Skullknightmon only to lose him and get stuck in the jungle where the weaker Digimon are being attacked by Megadramon, Allomon, and their leader Tankdramon (who may just be the strangest looking Digimon we’ve seen so far). Tai and Agumon protect the weaker Digimon and fight for them (nature is brutal) where they do a good job by themselves but the multiple battles and numbers catch up to them and they become surrounded. Luckily, Sora arrives with Garudamon to help out. Metalgreymon manages to defeat Tankdramon and Garudamon clears the skies just in time for Megadramon’s leader to arrive with party favors (the favors being everyone’s death).
In episode 30, Sora and Tai continue to escort the forest Digimon to safety as they’re being followed by Allomon. Tai and Metalgreymon decide to act as a distraction while Sora and Biyomon get everyone to safety. Meanwhile, Izzy discovers that the satellites from different countries are being set to collide with the international space station which will send it crashing down to Earth with the force of a meteor resulting in massive damage (and taxpayers being pissed at their wasted money). Back with Tai and Metalgreymon, they face off against Parrotmon (a good callback to the movie) who evolves into Crossmon a mega-level Digimon (can you believe they made Parrotmon an ultimate level Digimon? I guess the one in the movies was a complete weakling if it couldn’t defeat Greymon). Metalgreymon loses to Crossmon (you really thought an ultimate would defeat a mega? You a fool), but Tai and Argumon get back up, fight through the Allomon, catch up to Crossmon and then we get the long awaited evolution of Wargreymon (and it was well worth the wait). Not only is Wargreymon bigger but he looks even more badass than any of his previous incarnations. Wargreymon defeats Crossmon and meets back up with Sora and the other Digimon.
We start episode 31 with Lopmon, a Digimon that Tai and Agumon were protecting reveal her true identity. It turns out that in the past, Lopmon was Cherubimon the Digimon who led the army of light against the army of darkness in the past (and now you’re a cuddly rabbit. Shockingly, this one makes sense). She shows them the war that was fought years sgo where her army fought against the ultimate weapon of darkness, Millenniumon. Wargreymon along with the help of chosen Digimon (aka the mega evolutions of the other Digimon) defeated Millenniumon however, they couldn’t destroy it completely. Dark shards soon rained down from the sky and fell on continents. These shards are Millenniumon trying to regain its power and be born once again to finish what it started years ago, the complete annihilation of the Digital World (and with that the internet. Could you just destroy the social media sites instead? You be doing humanity a huge solid). As they continue to run through the forest they get attacked by Bakemon who evolves into Metalfantomon (this is the evolution of Bakemon? No offence but I was hoping for more of the Pale Rider from the Persona games). Metalgreymon does a good job fighting it off and it soon evolves into Gokumon (now it looks even more ridiculous. Also, I’m little worried about the enemies reaching mega evolutions so easily. In the original the mega evolutions were treated as big obstacles for the group to overcome. They were a serious danger to the group and reserved as big battles. Here, they’re just being tossed around like STDs at an orgy). Luckily, Metalgreymon evolves into Wargreymon and easily defeats Gokumon (go back to the drawing board). Lopmon uncovers a group of Komondomon who were allies of the army of light in the past. The Komondomon give everyone a lift and Lopmon reveals that there was another Holy Digimon in the past who helped them defeat Millenniumon.
Episodes 32-37
In episode 32 we focus on TK and Patamon who are on the run from Fangmon. Patamon tries to evolve but just can’t putting himself and TK in serious trouble (can we try to make these two useful this season). Just when the two are cornered, they get saved by Tai and Sora who bring them abroad Komondomon (it’s the furriest way to travel). The group continues to get chased by other Fangmon and their leader Cerberumon (a little confused why a dog is leading a pack of wolf/fox hybrids, but I’ve seen stranger things in this series) with Komondomon doing its best to avoid getting hit. Eventually, the Fangmon surround Metelgreymon and Garudamon and Sora gets hit making TK and Patamon man up and protect her (she might be TK’s future sister-in-law). Patamon finally evolves into Pegasmon instead of Angemon (okay, that was a cool surprise and honestly makes more sense than Patamon going from a small puffball bat to an angel). With Pegasmon’s help the group is able to beat and destroy the Fangmon as well as Cerberumon (and they didn’t have to use megaevolution to do it. They’re getting stronger).
Nothing much happens in episode 33. Tai’s group finally catches up to Skullknightmon and Kari (who still looks like her soul has left her body) where they become one (when did we enter Digimon S3?) as their body will be used as the new body for Millenniumon. Tai struggles to save Kari who goes through her own battle as we see the Skullknightmon this whole time has been Gatomon (well I can’t wait to hear this backstory). Gatomon (aka Tailmon) is the one who’s been calling out to Kari this whole time and this is why Kari allowed herself to get captured so easily by Skullknightmon, she wanted to save Gatomon. Kari’s voice manages to reach Gatomon and the two unite just in time for Wargreymon to burst in with Tai and save the two. With Kari and Gatomon rescued, the body of Skullknightmon is destroyed and this puts a stop to Millenniumon’s resurrection (for now).
In episode 34 Tai’s group is on their way to FAGA the place that houses the largest shard of Millenniumon. Gatomon wants to go there and destroy it to stop Millenniumon once and for all. As they traveled the water currents, they eventually arrive in an underwater city run by Marinangemon (who is tinier here than it was in season 3 if you can believe it) which features Digimon from the surface world who adapted to the sea in order to live. The whole city is in the middle of a turf war with the original inhabitants of the sea who want them gone (https://youtu.be/JsRRanZ0Ehg?t=17). After resting for the night, Marinangemon starts to move the city and return the group to their water current where they get attacked by Anomalocarimon. Gatomon foolishly tries to take on the creature herself because she doesn’t want to put Kari in any danger (that thing’s the size of a freakin’ humpback whale. You better start asking for help). Kari of course sees this and tells her she doesn’t have to do this alone, they can fight together (yatta yatta yatta). This allows Kari to get her Digivice and with the help of everyone they manage to defeat Anomalocarimon.
We continue to focus on Tai’s group (does anybody remember Matt and the others? Nitsuj remembers) as they continue on their journey by passing through a sea cave (where they can now breathe under water thanks to Marinangemon) they get into battle with Gusokumon. During the fight we actually see Gatomon was close to evolving but she stopped herself out of fear. She’s still haunted by Skullknightmon and is afraid of what she’ll turn into (trust me, you’ll turn into something that’ll confuse little boys for years). Metalgreymon is able to defeat Gusokumon and the group continues on their way where they get attacked by Marindevimon who captures Kari (hey, we see a new facial expression from her). Tai, Greymon, and Gatomon save her and we see Marindevimon has a shard of Millenniumon which slowly corrupts Gatomon and she’s about to attack the group until Kari’s voice reaches her to remind her that no matter what happens to her, Kari will be there to save her. This absolves the corruption in Gatomon and gives her courage to digivolve into Angewomon (like I said, something that will confuse little boys for years. Her and Lilymon). So as you would expect at this point, Angewomon destroys the shard and Marindevimon in the process to save everyone. When they finally get out of the cave, they receive a call from Izzy who tells them he knows how to stop the satellite from falling (oh yeah, I forget about that plot point. How did I forget that?).
It’s a race against time in episode 36. Tai’s group meets up with Izzy where he explains the satellite will be crashing into Tokyo in about 20 minutes (and they’re just now evacuating. What the fuck?). Izzy’s plan is to use this giant pillar data created from two Digimon fighting that stretches all the way into the network where they’ll use their Digimon to change the trajectory of the satellite away from Tokyo, just like they did in the past. They all fly up the pillar where they get attacked by Metallifekuwagamon and other Digimon who have adapted to the environment (and don’t take kindly to trespassers). In a rather cool moment Metalgreymon evolves into Blitzgreymon (awesome~) in order to adapt to the environment and fight against Metallifekuwagamon. This leaves only Izzy and Megakabuterimon to take care of the satellite (time to stop being the supporting character and become the MC). Izzy and Megakabuterimon make it time and blast the satellite to a safer location where no one gets harmed (and NASA is going to have field day trying to get insurance to cover up the damages).
In episode 37, after Izzy saves Tokyo, the group manage to stumble across Mimi and Palmon who are helping the Gottsumon and Golemon reclaim their land which has been taken over by Goblinmon (better call Slayermon) who have captured them and force them to work in the mines and dig up gems for their leader, Gogmamon (so, social issues have made it to the Digital World as well? Not surprising). Tai and Sora agree to help and they raid the base where they come across Gogmamon who has been eating the gems to and spitting out diamonds (and how I wish you were real). Mimi and Lilimon take on Gogmamon and defeat it (well it’s clear to say Lilimon is stronger than Metalgreymon). The Gottsumon reclaim their land and Golemon gets put in charge of the place to keep everyone safe.
And that’s the second part. Covered a lot. A real shame we didn’t get more character development episodes but we got a few decent episodes and the arrival of TK and Kari. Tune in next week for part 3. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
