(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. I’m Nitsuj, here with Yin-Yang and Shizuku as we a look at the second of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun S3.
(Shizuku): Last time, we saw Iruma come face-to-face with his fears. But through determination, he was able to destroy them.
(Yin-Yang): With the festival now approaching its final days, can Iruma find his way out of the crevasse and reunite with Lead to turn things around? Let’s find out.
Episodes 13-15
(Nitsuj): We begin the second half with Iruma returning from the underground (scene here: https://youtu.be/I-YqyPim0CQ?si=e-ueBXVe9LxtagOo. (Shizuku): He’s back bitches~! And he’s brought favors for everybody). He announces to everyone that he’s got the seed but in order to get it to bloom he needs the Vase of Endings. Luckily, Lead has secured the vase after his own adventure to retrieve it (Yin-Yang: For a short period, he became the lead of his own story). Now he has to reach Iruma while avoiding everyone because the target on their back has just gotten big and he runs into the last person he wanted to see, Elizabetta (well, he’s screwed).
In episode 14 Iruma finds Lead where we find out Elizabetta took the vase. Except it wasn’t Elizabetta but instead Orobas showing another illusion. Now he’s got the vase. But he’ll have to wait as we find out Keroli is leading an army of monsters to attack Agares and Goemon’s castle to get their points and seize the castle. She’s already recruited Clara and Elizabetta to her side (scene here: https://youtu.be/1APUHKwyLmU?si=C5epkQXyUcRxbW8k), but Agares and Goemon have the help of other students that they took in on the first night who are fighting as well to protect the castle.
We begin episode 15 with Keroli ordering a retreat on the castle, but Elizabetta captured a number of their men with her charm skills (the girl is dangerous). We learn a little about Orobas and why he’s targeting the misfits. It turns out Orobas comes from a renowned family who are part of a cult obsessed with the number 2 (Shizuku: I’ve heard of stranger cults). Orobas wasn’t fond of the cult and wanted to be number one, but no matter what he did in school he always came in second and would often lose to the misfit class. Orobas went into the festival wanting to beat the misfit class fair and square without relying on powers, but someone seems to be controlling him. Orobas’s next target is Clara whose worst fear is Iruma not really being her friend (Yin-Yang: Out of all the illusions we’ve seen this one definitely hurts the most. The fact that these hurtful things are coming out of Iruma’s mouth is shocking enough. But also, because this gives us an inside look into Clara’s psyche. Her worst fear isn’t her family abandoning her or disappointing them. It’s finding out that her friendship with Iruma was all a lie and he was just using her just like everyone before him). As Clara is trapped in the illusion about to be attacked by a monster, Iruma uses his bow and arrow to destroy the monster and save Clara (scene here: https://youtu.be/pqT1K_7yO8Q?si=iaG9LNJ10hpwxsVs. This is nice, but I’m still shipping him with Ameri. (Yin-Yang): Of course! (Shizuku): Totally, they’re so perfect for each other). Orobas gets ready to use the full force of his ability, but gets stopped by Asmodeus who says screw the rules and just punches Orobas (Shizuku: Thank you. He’s already at rank 4 so he’s safe. This festival might as well be a picnic for him).
Episodes 16-18
(Shizuku): At the start of episode 16 Asmodeus beats up Orobas and warns him to stay away from his friends or he’ll make him suffer. Asmodeus is disqualified (Nitsuj and Yin-Yang: Obviously) and takes his leave but not before sharing a moment with Iruma and Clara (scene here: https://youtu.be/ENNTLFcczc8?si=qJt1hGvV8kGpqXMc. (Nitsuj): You’ve got to give the watchers what they want). Now that Orobas is taken care of the question is how will Iruma and Lead get the seed to grow? Orobas has already turned in the vase. . .or did he? In the mother of all twist it gets revealed that Orobas turned the vase into Schneider in disguise. While Jazz and him were on a team, Jazz was the only one disqualified (Yin-Yang: True, he was the only one who threw a punch). Schneider just followed him back to the tent and they used this time to gather info from everyone else and form a plan to get revenge (sneaky bastards). Schneider hands the vase over to Iruma and Lead and takes his leave (his work here is done. (Yin-Yang): Definitely the MVP this episode).
In episode 17 Iruma and Lead with the help of Clara manage to get the seed to bloom into the leaf (Nitsuj: And it is not what we were expecting to see. (Yin-Yang): A sentient plump flower was not what I was expecting but I dig it). The final bell signaling the end of the festival goes off and it’s time to tally up the points. At first Orobas comes in first with Iruma coming in second (I demand a recount!). Thankfully, Jazz calls objection (Nitsuj: Give that man a desk to slam) saying that the judges failed to count the vase as an item as well and he’s right. They only counted the leaf. After counting the vase, Iruma and Lead beat Orobas and come in first and second (Yin-Yang: Look on the bright side Orobas, you didn’t come in second). As everyone congratulates Iruma and Lead on their victory, we find out that Naphula is not only a member of the student council (Yin-Yang: That’s some deep undercover work right there), but he was one of the requirements to get the seed to bloom (Nitsuj: Man this leaf is harder to get than a shiny Riolu. The leaf finally blooms and shows them the flowers never before seen in the Netherworld, cherry blossoms (Nitsuj: We went through all that just to see some cherry blossoms? (Yin-Yang): Totally worth it).
Episode 18 sees everyone taking in the magnificent view of the cherry blossoms (Yin-Yang: Again. Totally worth it). We then go to the award ceremony where Iruma and Lead are now ranked 4 (https://youtu.be/4cT13qRLQ0Y). We see a few other characters from Misfit get ranked as well for their performance in the festival. All the first years have an afterparty where the misfits stir up some trouble and then they all go home where Iruma reaffirms that this is the place where he belongs (bet your ass).
Episodes 19-21
(Yin-Yang): In episode 19 the teachers gather for an afterparty where they drink and play bingo (Nitsuj: That might just be the most subtle thing in this anime thus far). We also find out that the cult of two is actually run by Baal and thanks to his spy during the festival, he knows that Iruma is human (Shizuku: And our perverted demon with the despair fetish is overjoyed. In the first half of episode 20, Lead invites Iruma over to play games and have their own private party to celebrate their victory at the festival. During this time we get to meet Lead’s sister Shakky who is thirsty for a man (Corbin: I humbly volunteer to satisfy her thirst with a tall glass of Jack Frost). Lead throws her back in her room where she’s noticed how he’s changed. In the past, Lead often kept to himself and was bored with life. Now, it seems like he enjoys his life and has met friends that he really cares about. In the second half it’s time for Iruma to spend time with Ameri (Nitsuj: Yes! I’ve been missing my daily dose of these two). Ameri wants to give Iruma a gift to congratulate him on his victory at the festival but doesn’t know what to get him (Shizuku: What exactly do you give a boy who’s been given nothing his whole life?). Taking an interest in sweets, Iruma invites Ameri over to do some baking. Unfortunately, these two have no idea how to bake (all these jobs and he’s never worked at a bakery?). Naturally, what they make is a disaster (I can’t even call it food anymore) and Opera has to step in and show them how to bake properly. In the end, the baking is a success and Ameri gives her half of the cookies to Iruma as a gift (scene here: https://youtu.be/C0Ib5w7-CTQ?si=1deKW4ucMZbFYeH_).
In the final episode Iruma goes over to Asmodeus’s house with Clara. Iruma thinks he should tell them that he’s human but Asmodeus’s mom (one thing. The one family members I wanted him to meet and they don’t show up) tells him to hold on to that secret for the time being and dotes on him (Yin-Yang: I think she knows Iruma is human. She’s a seductress she has to know the difference between a demon and human). Iruma returns to Asmodeus and Clara where he expresses how happy he is to call them friends. As the episode wraps up, everyone prepares for the next ranking-up event, the music festival (Shizuku: Play Purple Rain. (Nitsuj): Shut up!). With Elizabetta ranked 2 this festival will be crucial for her (Shizuku: Really two? (Nitsuj): Yeah I know, I thought she’d at least be ranked 3) as well as another student named Soi. Yes, there’s actually been another student that we haven’t been focusing on this whole time who’s been hiding in the background and hasn’t said a word (Yin-Yang: That is hilarious. And this isn’t them trolling us. They actually, introduced this character in the first season and we completely ignored them. This was all set up from the very beginning).
Final Thoughts
(Nitsuj): In the end, season 3 of Iruma was a lot of fun.
(Yin-Yang): While the season didn’t have that many laughs as the previous seasons it makes up for it by giving us some good non-battle action, heartfelt moments, and focusing on all the misfits.
(Shizuku): As well as ending on a good and funny note to get you hyped for the next season.
(Nitsuj): I like how all the misfits got a chance to show off in the season whether it was against each other or other students at the academy. We also got to team ups we wouldn’t have expected. Iruma and Lead wound up becoming a great unlikely team and I like how at the end Lead is the one who gets the most development instead of Iruma.
(Shizuku): That’s not to say Iruma doesn’t have his development as well. We see how this place really is where he belongs. He may be human, but there’s no doubt this version of Hell is the best place for him and it’s where he belongs. The moment where he saves Clara is nothing short of masterful storytelling and drives home just how much his friendship with her and Asmodeus means to him.
(Yin-Yang): I honestly thought he was going to tell them he was human. I think even if they do find out he’s human they’ll still accept him for who he is because he’s their friend and that’s all that matters. It’s corny, yes, but it’s the good kind of corny we all love to see.
(Nitsuj): Despite this being a non-physical festival, they still manage to deliver some good action throughout the tournament in ways you wouldn’t have expected. Whether it was through the illusions or the students facing off against each other. It was good, fun, and showed us how misfits have grown and will only get stronger from here.
(Shizuku): The animation is nice. There are a few good standout moments where the anime looks impressive like when Iruma creates his bow and fires his final arrow to save Clara. Besides that, the animation is similar to the previous seasons so give them credit for consistency.
Final Score
(Yin-Yang): My final score for this season is 7.5/10. While not big on laughs good use of characters and story.
(Shizuku): I’m giving it an 8/10. Good non-battle action and good growth on the characters.
(Nitsuj): I’m giving it a 7.5/10 as well. That brings the final score to 7.6. Once again the same as the previous seasons. I swear, we’re not doing this on purpose. Another fun season that gets you excited for the next season which will be a battle of the bands. What tricks will the misfits pull out in this festival? We’ll just have to wait to see.
