Hello everyone! Justin here and welcome to the Otaku Mind. So last month I did a list naming all my favorite Pokémon from Z-A in honor of the new game. It was a fun list to make and someone asked me: If I was a gym leader what type would I be and what would my team be? This is a good question as it’s something I’ve thought about a number of times and I don’t see no harm in telling you. However, let’s make it a little fun. Why don’t we do all the types just for the hell of it. While I have my favorite types I have thought about all the other types out there and created teams for them. For this month’s Otaku Mind I’m going to share them all with you. Before we get started here are a few rules I put on myself to make the list fair. No legendries, mythic, or paradoxes on the team. I’m a gym leader, I’m not trying to be unbeatable, I’m trying to give trainers a challenge that tests their skills and adaptability. Second, no double booking. If a Pokémon is on one team they won’t be on another team to make things fair. Alright, let’s get started.
Steel Type
Like I said before, Steel Pokémon are my favorite and if I were to become a gym leader or a member of the Elite 4 this would be my type. On this team we have Tinkaton, Corviknight, Gholdengo, Scizor, Magnezone, and my ace Lucario.
Fighting Type
Falinks, Hitmonchan, Hariyama, Hawlucha, Annihilape, and Kommo-o as the ace. Definitely focusing on power and intimidation with this team. Ironically, when I was a kid I favored Hitmonlee over Hitmonchan. But now that I’m adult I see all the benefits that Hitmochan has to offer.
Flying Type
Noctowl, Gilgar, Kilowattrel, Braviary, Flamigo, and Altaria as my ace. This team was actually a little bit harder to make. A lot of the bird Pokemon I do like are legendaries and the ones that aren’t on this team will appear on other teams.
Fire Type
Ninetales, Arcanine, Armaouge, Talonflame, Houndoom, and Blaziken is the ace. Lot to choose from here. Once again no Charizard. I don’t hate it I just think it’s overhyped.
Water Type
Dondozo, Greninja, Lapras, Milotic, Gyarados, and Blastoise as the ace. This one was a lot harder than I thought it would be. My favorite part of this team is Milotic and Gyarados. The Beauty and The Beast of water Pokémon.
Grass Type
Grovyle, Shiftry, Leafeon, Tsareena, Arboliva, and Flapple will be the ace. Not as hard as I thought. Grass type Pokemon have never really been my thing, but the ones I choose to focus on are really good.
Electric Type
Electabuzz, Luxray, Rotom, Alolan Raichu, Galvantula, and Electivire as the ace. This was another hard team to make. I’ve always struggled with finding good electric types to invest in, but I think this teams works. In another universe I would have replaced Electabuzz with Jolteon.
Ice Type
Glaceon, Beartic, Cryogonal, Frosmoth, Froslass, and Baxcalibur as the ace. The original dragon slayers. Ice Pokémon were my favorite when I was a kid, but I started to drift away from them as I got older. There’s just not whole lot of good ones to invest in.
Poison Type
Seviper, Toxtricity, Glimmora, Clodsire, Dragalge, and Gengar will be the ace. Poison type Pokémon are another type I never really got into. Status ailments have never been my go-to in games. Overwhelming my opponents with power is my strategy. I know it’s simple and basic, but it doesn’t matter how strong the shield is, as long as the sword is sharper and stronger, it’ll tear through all your plans.
Ghost Type
Alolan Marowak, Misdreavus, Dusknoir, Chandelure, Ceruledge, and Decidueye the ace. This is one of my friends’ favorite types. We would always have discussions on our favorite ghosts and the teams we would make.
Ground Type
Dugtrio, Rhyperior, Krookodile, Gliscor, Garchomp, and Torterra is our ace. In hindsight, ground types may just be some of the strongest Pokémon I’ve trained.
Rock Type
Shuckle, Solrock, Lyancroc (midnight form), Kleavor, Coalossal, and Tyranitar as the ace. Here’s another type I’ve never really cared for. Not because they’re bad, I feel that ground types were better and are basically the same thing.
Normal Type
Ditto, Tauros, Ursaring, Bewear, Pyroar, and Snorlax as the ace. I kind of went back and forth between Ursaring and Snorlax as the ace, but I think Snorlax is stronger of the two.
Psychic Type
Slowking, Xatu, Hatterene, Gallade, Sigilyph, and Alakazam as the ace. Psychic types were another one of my favorite types as a kid. I thought they were invincible, but with the introduction of dark and as I’ve grown older I’ve started to see their weaknesses. I still like them and usually have one on the team for my final team in games.
Dark Type
Umbreon, Absol, Zoroark, Spiritomb, Pangoro, and Kingambit as the ace. Mischievous and wicked individuals. I actually thought about putting Kingambit on the steel team, but I think he’s better on this team. He’s like a general leading his troops into battle.
Dragon Type
Dragonair, Hydreigon, Tatsugiri, Dipplin, Salamence, and Duraludon as the ace. I know a lot of people love this type, but I never really got into them. Even as a kid I didn’t think dragon types were all that. Also, how do you take something as beautiful as Dragonair and turn into something so Barney-like as its final evolution? Shame on you.
Fairy Type
Azumarill, Gardevoir, Mawile, Florges, Galarian Rapidash, and Grimmsnarl as the ace. This is a type that’s steadily been growing on me over the years. There’s definitely a lot of potential with this type and I hope to see more of them in the future. I’m surprise there’s no light type yet.
Bug Type
Pineco, Heracross, Shedinja, Scyther, Centiskorch, and the ace is Volcarona. Like I said before, bug types have never really been my thing. I do understand their benefits though. They reach their final forms in low levels but they’re not major power hitters aside from a few of them.
Bonus: League Champion
Now that that’s all done here’s the team I would use if I was the league champion: Tinkaton, Milotic, Hawlucha, Volcarona, Decidueye, and Lucario as the ace. When compared to other champions it’s not the scariest team you’ll face but it’s definitely the most versatile one that forces you to adapt and have one or two Pokémon on standby to take them down.
All Legendary Team
Ogerpon, Galarian Zapdos, Kartana, Urshifu, Regieleki, and Rayquaza as the ace. This is one of those teams that starts off looking simple but only gets more fiercer the deeper you go into the team.
All Mythical Team
Victini, Meloetta, Darkrai, Zeraora, Celebi, and Mew as the ace (obviously). I’ve noticed that all the mythic Pokémon are cute child-like creatures. It certainly separates them from the legends who are fierce creatures with godlike powers.
All Paradox Team
Scream Tail, Flutter Mane, Iron Valiant, Iron Moth, Sandy Shocks, and the ace is Iron Hands. Decided to go down the middle here.
