Project #141: Shinmai Maou no Testament

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Well guys I’ve recently discovered that a few animes that aired earlier this season will be getting a second season this fall so let’s celebrate by reviewing a few of them starting off with one of my personal favorites so far Shinmai Maou no Testament. When translated this title means The Testament of Sister New Devil, it’s a light novel written by Tetsuto Uesu in 2012 and still ongoing to this day. The novel tells the story of a young man who finds out his new little sister is the next demon lord and the steps he takes to protect her from other demons. It was a series that became popular through its comedic ecchi writing that almost rivals that of To Love Ru and Highschool DxD. Earlier this year the animation studio Production IMS turned the series into an anime making it one of the ecchiest animes to air this year as well as one of the popular ones. Let’s see what all the fuss is about and take a look at Shinmai Maou no Testament.

Opening and Ending Theme

The opening is “Blade of Hope” by sweet ARMS. The opening surprisingly reminds me of the opening for Highschool DxD only slower. The song is rather slow but it has many layers to it that’s constantly changing. I found the song to be okay. I would usually skip over it but I do like the violin in the song and that final note is perfect. The ending for this anime is “Still Sis” by Kaori Sadohara. Once again I found the song okay and would usually skip over it as it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. The song oddly enough reminds me of the opening only faster.

Episodes 1-4

The anime opens up in a family restaurant where our main character Basara voiced by Yūichi Nakamura (Grey from Fairy Tail) is having a conversation with his dad who tells him that he’s remarried and that Basara now has two little sisters. Basara is shocked by this information of course (what’s there to be shocked about the guy wants to spice up his night life. You’ll understand when you’re older) but he’s curious to meet his new sisters. A bit of time goes by and Basara goes to the bathroom which is a unisex bathroom (what kind of restaurant doesn’t have separate bathrooms?), doesn’t knock, and of course walks in on a hot red-head using the bathroom (harem clichés at their finest). Before she can scream Basara covers her mouth, grabs her, and pushes her to a wall (dude you’re not making the situation better for yourself) where he explains what happened and apologizes for it. This calms her down but she still smacks him (scene here: //youtu.be/Jle0iWaiAuY). We find out later that this hot red-head is Basara’s new little sister Mio voiced by the new up and coming VA Ayaka Asai (//fav.me/d8d24hv, that is not a little sister that is jailbait) and his other sister Maria voiced by Kaori Fukuhara (Astrea from Sora no Otoshimono. //fav.me/d89tvy1, now that’s a little sister character but don’t be fooled that girl is in to some dirty stuff). After meeting they move into their new house where Mio does the little sister duty of waking up her brother although she adds a little fanservice to the mix (scene here: //youtu.be/tr94y-E3up0, like I said that’s not a little sister that’s jailbait). Mio finds a hentai video game underneath his sheets with a sister theme to it (only in Japan folks) and accuses him of being a pervert (said the girl giving her step-brother morning wood). We find out later that the game was put there by Maria who also gives Basara a little fanservice in the kitchen (like I said dirty girl). Despite the rough start they all seem to get along with each other, Basara even protects Mio from some thugs hitting on her wanting to do what every guy watching this anime wants to do with her (scene here: //youtu.be/QxgNuyPYUmg). After a few days Basara’s dad has to leave for a business trip leaving Basara alone with the girls (now son just because you aren’t blood related doesn’t mean you can do the horizontal bop with them even though you want to). Once he’s gone Mio just comes out and asks Basara to leave (what?) because it turns out she’s a demon and not just any demon she’s the next demon lord and Maria is her loyal succubus servant (well that explains why the girl is so dirty). They want him out of his house just like his dad so they try to brainwash him to get him to leave like they did to his dad but it doesn’t work on him because Basara isn’t just your average human he’s a hero as is his dad (I did not see this coming). It turns out that just like there are demons and angels in this world there are heroes as well and Basara and his dad come from a hero clan however they left the clan 5 years ago for unknown reasons and have decided to live the normal life (why the hell would you wanna do that?). Basara shows off his power proving that he’s stronger than them. Rather than kill them he instead tells them to leave and they do with Mio apologizing for deceiving him. He gets a call from his dad who tells him he knew Mio and Maria were demons (well thanks for the heads up dad) but still wanted to help them out because Mio’s life is in danger. It turns out that Mio’s dad was a good demon lord who bought all the tribes together and put an end to the long battle going on between demons and heroes (impressive sir). However warlike demons didn’t like this so they killed him and tried take the head of his daughter. Luckily supporters of Mio’s dad got her to safety and had her grow-up in the human world where she could master her powers and live a safe life but now the demons have found her and are determined to kill her. After hearing the story and receiving the family portrait from his father Basara rushes out to find Mio and Maria who are fighting monsters. One of the monsters throws Mio off a hill (you’re supposed to tentacle rape her not throw her. Newbies) but she gets saved by Basara and he takes care of the monsters with his hero powers to end the episode.

In episode 2 they all return home where Mio is still shook up from her confrontation with the monsters. Maria suggest that Mio and Basara form a pact with each other that way they’ll be able to sense each other where ever they are (just don’t sense each other between 4 and 5, that’s private time). They do the pact but something went wrong and instead Basara becomes Mio’s master (this is new, usually it’s the other way around). In order to complete the contract Mio has to kiss Basara’s hand but she refuses and because Maria used her power in the pact Mio gets cursed with a succubus curse that acts like an aphrodisiac and makes Mio body hot (warning, approaching To Love Ru levels of ecchiness). In order to stop the curse Basara has to touch Mio in her private spot which is her breast and once he does this she cums 9 times in a row (and we have reached pre-Highschool DxD levels of ecchiness. All they need to do is have a compelling story and make the anime uncensored and they’ll have reach DxD’s level). The next day at school Basara meets his childhood friend Yuki voiced by Sarah Emi Bridcutt (Asuka from Mondaji) another hero who comes from the hero clan and the class rep. She’s so happy to see Basara again that she openly hugs him in front of the whole class (this girl doesn’t waste anytime establishing herself) making the boys and Mio jealous that she blurts out she’s living with Basara (kill him~). This of course causes a lot of hate in the class directed towards Basara since he’s got the two idols of the school fighting over his cock (hey when you got the voice of Yūichi Nakamura that’s to be expected). Luckily, one of the classmates Yahiro befriends him and after school he goes to a coffee café known as Coffee (couldn’t get sponsors for this anime huh?) with Yuki where she tells Basara not to get involved with Mio (than I got bad news for you sister).

Episode 3 opens up where episode 2 left off. Yuki tells Basara not to get involved with Mio but Basara says no and that he intends to protect her no matter what (he wants to do his stepsister). Yuki tells Basara that Mio is under the hero’s clan observation and she’s the observer. She warns him that Mio’s powers attracts low level demons to her and if this keeps up Mio will be declared an assassination target and Yuki will have to kill her even if that means killing Basara (be honest Yuki, you’re hoping Mio becomes an assassination target). Mio and Maria overhear their conversation in the café and while this makes Mio happy she’s afraid and jealous that Yuki is going to take Basara away from her (she’s already got the little sister mentality). In order to relieve Mio’s anxiety Maria gives her an ecchi suggestion (sure let’s all listen to the loli succubus who’s horny and perverted as hell): sibling bath time (let the doujins begin). He wakes up in his bed passed out (oh you fail) to the sight of Maria (scene here: //youtu.be/mpYbARqtWkE, she liked it). After that Basara and Maria go out every night on patrol killing any low level demons that appear in the area all while not telling Mio as to not make her feel bad. This causes Basara to fall asleep in class a few times worrying Mio a little bit and once at school where she sees Basara and Yuki with each other the curse on her activates again and she passes out on us (he’s not gonna leave you no man could walk away from those boobs). She wakes up in the infirmary with Basara by his side but once he steps out to get a drink demons attack the school so he has to fight them. While that’s going on Yuki decides to take it upon herself to kill Mio in order to protect Basara because apparently 5 years ago he did something bad that caused him to kill his comrades, get banned from the hero clan, and weaken him greatly (place your bets folks). The fight gets stopped by Basara (spoiled sport) and another demon shows up to weigh in on the situation at hand where he kills Basara (he died after 3 episodes? Does this mean the anime is gonna be a yuri harem now?).

At the start of episode 4 Basara is still alive but barely. The demon named Lars retreats for the time being (DUMB) but tells Mio to really think about her situation. They manage to give Basara the proper treatment just in time to save him and Mio decides to give herself up to save Basara (son of a bitch). Mio meets the demon in the park (man parks are like the hotspot for rape and demon deals in anime aren’t they?) where Yuki shows up to fight the demon out of vengeance for Basara (Yuki! Don’t be a hero). She loses of course and just when she’s about to be destroyed Basara shows up still injured and saves her. With the help of Maria he manages to break the defenses of the demon and defeats him (I really am tired of this. You have two powerful characters fight a big villain but they can’t beat it. However, the main character shows up, injured or wounded, and they manage to beat the villain no problem. I know this is supposed to show off how strong the main character is but by doing this you make the other characters look weak and worthless. We know Basara is powerful you’ve already established this in earlier episodes so now you should establish how Mio, Yuki, and Maria for that matter are strong and not just dead weight). With the demon defeated everything seems calm down but a shadow demon comes out of nowhere and stabs Basara in the back again (today is just not his day). This causes Mio’s powers to go berserk and she knocks out everyone. Basara gets back up because apparently the demon missed his vitals and he sees Mio struggling to keep her powers under control. She tells Basara to kill her saying that if she isn’t stopped her powers to be unleashed and she’ll destroy the world (you see what I’m mean folks? She has the power to destroy the world in an instant and yet she can’t defeat some mid-level demon that a wounded main character can beat with ease. There’s suspension of disbelief and then there’s just playing the audience for idiots. This is playing the audience for idiots). Basara says he won’t kill her (//youtu.be/qiAPczabvng) but instead save her. He uses his special power known as banishing shift a powerful move that allows Basara to erase anything he wants from existence whether it be a mountain, city, or energy for that matter (talk about OP’ed). This is the reason why Basara was banished from his village. When he was a child a rogue hero stole a demon sword from the village and got possessed by it. He went on a murdering rampage in the village and just when he was about to kill a young Yuki, a young Basara stepped in and used his banishing shift powers to destroy the rogue hero as well as a mountain. Because of this everyone became scared of him and wanted to lock him up so that another tragedy like this wouldn’t happen again (hey a little boy just saved our village and blew up a mountain with his godlike powers. Let’s lock him up and treat him like a monster. That’s the most logical thing to do). Basara succeeds in bringing Mio back to normal and after a week of healing they return to school where Basara confronts the demon from that night on the school roof who just happens to still be alive and is Basara’s only male friend at the school Yahiro (a hero and a demon being friends? What madness is this?). They strike a deal where Basara won’t tell the stand-in demon lord about Yahiro’s failure as long as Yahiro stays away from Mio. They form an uneasy alliance and Yahiro even tells Basara who’s responsible for killing Mio’s foster parents.

Episodes 5-8

Not much happens in episode 5. We start with a lot of fanservice and white fog (damn fog censorship laws. You ruined anime). Yahiro and Basara go to eat out at a BBQ restaurant where Yahiro tells Basara that reinforcements will be arriving from Hell soon and that due to the master-servant relationship Basara and Mio have, if Mio gets captured the curse will activate and unleash its ultimate effect on her which is death because according to demon laws betraying your master is the worst crime you can commit and is punishable by death (that’s bad). However, Yahiro tells Basara that the more loyalty he and Mio have with each other the stronger he’ll get (that’s good). As they’re eaten they get joined by Chisato the school nurse (Pyro Jack: Is she hot? (Nitsuj): You tell me, //www.zerochan.net/1785667. (Pyro Jack): *Flames comes flying out of his nose as he passes out. (Nitsuj): I’ll take that as a yes). It’s unsure if she’s a hero or demon but she shows signs of knowing what Basara is really doing (and she’s okay with it). Basara returns home where Maria takes it upon herself to teach Basara how to deepen his relationship with Mio. Her answer, have him play a hentai game with a sister theme to it (well something will be deep and in Mio no doubt). Back in the city we find out that more heroes from the Hero Clan have arrived in the city and Mio is a target now. The next day at school as Basara is getting harassed by a bunch of boys who want to know if he’s done anything to Mio (well he’s made her cum 9 times so I say yes) and what his relationship is with Yuki (third member of the harem). A teacher comes in to calm the situation down and Yuki comes in to ask Basara out on a date next week (//youtu.be/4F4qzPbcFiA). We also get to meet Zest a servant of another powerful demon who’s been to capture Mio.

Nothing much really happens in episode 6. It starts off with Basara and Yuki on their date shopping and they get joined by Mio and Maria (third wheels much). Yuki doesn’t seem to mind all that much in fact she actually has more fun when they joined in (I sense a foursome in the future. Basara you lucky bastard) but it’s stopped by the Hero Clan. As Basara and the others are on the roof waiting for Yuki they get attacked by a demon who gets killed by the heroes from the Hero Clan. One of them is Takashi a guy who looked up to Basara when they were kids but when Basara used his powers to save the village which in turn caused a few bystanders getting killed Takashi turned on Basara (yeah let’s not question the integrity and honor of the guy you look up to). The other is Shiba a hero who was imprisoned for a crime he committed in the past and the final one is Kurumi, Yuki’s younger sister who considers Basara a traitor (hey the guy who saved your village and the life of your sister is a traitor. Bitch). They’ve been sent because Mio has now been moved up to assassination target (what are you guys heroes or assassins from Assassin’s Creed?) and they’re the assassins. Rather than kill Mio right now they instead decide to postpone their fight for a week so Basara begins to train Mio and Maria and come up with an effective strategy to beat the heroes and Maria finally gets Basara and Mio to do lewd things with each other to increase their trust with each other and make Maria stronger (Jack Frost): Hey have you seen Pyro I haven’t- *watches scene and snow comes flying out of his nose as he faints*). The day of the fight finally arrives with Yuki telling them where to meet and Basara giving her an extra house key to his house (ohh~ nice move Basara). The episode ends with them all getting ready to fight.

In episode 7 both sides fight each other in a barrier that’s similar to the city (only greener). Mio and Maria take on Takashi and his spear of Byakko which carries the saint beast itself (overpowered spear is overpowered) and Basara takes on Kurumi and her wind magic where at first Kurumi seems to be winning but Basara starts to get serious and beats her with ease. After beating her he does save her from falling out of a building and they drop hints that she might have a thing for Basara (man you are just a sister magnet aren’t you man?). Yuki comes in and knocks him out with sleep incense (*sarcasm* oh no you monsters whatever you do don’t rape him in his sleep) and then she goes to help Mio and Maria fight Takashi (you do know he’s the only one among you strong enough to defeat Takashi and his spear right? You have pretty much screwed yourself over). Mio and Maria think they’ve got Takashi beaten but his powers prove to be too much for them (that tends to happen when you have an overpowered spear at your side). Yuki comes in to help fight with them while Mio goes to check up on Basara who is resting in the lap of Kurumi (only two episodes and she’s like in third place in terms of intimacy with Basara). We see that Basara is having a nightmare saying how sorry he was for what he did 5 years ago to the village. This shocks Kurumi as she had no idea Basara was also suffering just as much as her and every else in the village (really? Did nobody in that village stop to question the integrity of this guy!? Hero Clan my ass! Seras would make a better hero than these guys and she tried to kill me, twice). Mio’s voice manages to reawaken Basara and he goes to face Takashi and just in time because Yuki was about to get pierced (and not in a good and hot way). Despite being injured Basara manages to back Takashi in a corner forcing his spear to activate it’s self-defense spell which summons Byakko (Byakko: Who dare summons the great Byakko? Don’t expect me to grant any wishes like that sell out Kohryu). Because of Byakko’s presence the barrier begins to break so Basara and Yuki combine their powers and defeat the great and powerful Byakko. Takashi demands that Basara take his life like he did the others in the village (no. you don’t decide how you die) and Shiba comes in telling them there’s been a change of plans and that they all have to return to the village including Yuki (he’s serious! His closed eyes are open and everything).

In episode 8 Yuki returns after missing for 10 days without word from her. We find out that the village has moved Mio back to observation status and have placed Yuki in the observer position once again and will be living with Basara and the others from now on (and the harem grows). Maria tells Yuki about the master-servant pact Basara and Mio have and she wants to make a pact as well and wouldn’t you know it a full moon will be happening tomorrow night so Yuki’s fantasies of being tied up by Basara will finally come true. At school Maria decides to explore the campus and Basara follows her making sure she stays out of trouble (and getting into trouble with her) while Yuki keeps rubbing it in Mio’s face that she’s going to be in a pact with Basara soon making her feel jealous (her girl senses are starting to take effect again). Mio discovers Basara and Maria being naughty with each other in the girl’s locker room (and in her locker no less) where Basara apologizes and brings up Yuki (almost entirely out of nowhere) which causes the pact on Mio to activate and thus Basara has to do lewd things to calm her down. School finally ends and Basara walks back home with Maria in hand causing her to blush a little.

Episodes 9-12 and OVA

Episode 9 opens up with Basara and Yuki performing the master-servant pact where Yuki purposely does it wrong so the pact is like Mio’s pact with Basara (man this girl is just perverted). So because of that Basara has to sexually assault her in order to get her to calm down and unlike Mio where we skipped over it we actually get to see it this time (and yes it is erotic). After that they all have a bath together (*Pyro Jack and Jack Frost come to* (Pyro Jack): Uhh~ what happened? (Jack Frost): Why is my nose dripping with snow? *See the scene of Basara in the bath with his harem. They both get respective nosebleeds and pass out again*). The next day in school a girl approaches Basara saying she’s in love with him (what? Who? How? When?) and tackles him to the ground (ohh she’s aggressive). Mio and Yuki come in to see this where the pact activates on Mio and she runs away while Yuki takes out her sword and tries to slash the girl but the girl jumps out of the way to reveal that she’s possessed. Yuki handles the possessed schoolmate while Basara goes to find Mio who is wondering the streets where she meets up with Maria who knocks her out (what the hell Maria?). Basara arrives onto the scene to see Zest and Maria take Mio away to Zolgia a demon noble who’s responsible for killing Mio’s foster parents. Basara tries to use the pact to find her but it’s not working and Mio awakes in the presence of Zolgia where it gets revealed that Maria is a traitor (you whore). Basara goes to Yahiro who reveals that Zolgia has captured Maria’s mother and is holding her hostage (whore statement retracted. For now). Basara says he wants to save them and needs help help to do it but of course Yahiro being Yahiro refuses to help so a fight breaks out between the two (you can be a dick sometimes Yahiro you know that right?). Back at Zolgia’s palace he gets called away by the current demon lord to investigate some ruins and Yahiro shows up at Zolgia’s place with an unconscious Basara offering him to Zest (who I’m sure will put him to good use) to end the episode.

Episode 10 picks up where episode 9 left off. Yahiro offers Basara in exchange for Mio (he gets a sex toy you get a sex toy. Everybody wins). Of course the deal goes south and Zest strikes Yahiro down (he’s still alive no doubt) and takes Basara where she tells Maria to use her succubus powers and have Basara submit to her. She takes Basara to another room where he wakes up chained to a bed (the keys to his release lay in the cleavage of Maria). Maria comes in and transforms into her adult form where she gets taller and bigger breasts (wow now she really is a hot succubus). She uses her powers to control Basara and gives him permission to have his way with her (//youtu.be/6nSKkwzwdW4?t=3s). He forces her down on the bed and goes straight for the breast (don’t blame him they look delicious) but soon snaps out of it. This forces Maria to fight Basara where he refuses to fight back because he wants to help her. While that’s going on Yuki finds Zolgia’s mansion, breaks the barrier, and saves Mio where they team up to fight Zest. They beat her but refuse to kill her and Maria finally stops fighting Basara and cries accepting how much she needs his help (this whole situation reminds me of Nami’s arc from One Piece). Just as things seem to be going their way Zolgia returns and attacks the girls including Zest who he said betrayed her because she was jealous of the way Basara treated Mio and Yuki and wanted Zolgia to do the same treatment for her. When he’s about to kill her Basara shows up to face him with Zolgia now interested in Basara’s powers.

Episode 11 picks up where episode 10 left off. Basara is fighting Zolgia who overpowers Basara and traps him in an illusion where all the major females (including the Chisato and Kurumi) all want to have an orgy with him (*Pyro Jack and Jack Frost come to once again and this time Nitsuj covers both of their eyes so they don’t see the scene* (Pyro Jack): Hey what’s going on? (Nitsuj): You guys have been having nosebleeds throughout the review. If you keep having them you’re both gonna die from fire and snow lost. Not to mention you’re damaging my carpet). Maria comes in and tries to fight but Zolgia reveals that he’s already killed Maria’s mother upsetting Maria and pissing off Mio who unleashes her own demon lord powers and destroys one of Zolgia’s arms (Pyro Jack: Ohh~ she destroyed the right one too. Not good man not good). She’s about to destroy him but Basara escapes the illusion (why he would wanna leave is beyond me. (Jack Frost): Okay now I really wanna see what his illusion was) and tells Mio not to kill him otherwise she’ll be just like him (and you don’t want that). Mio tells him to order her not to do it but he refuses saying that if he did they won’t be brother and sister anymore (didn’t seem to bother you in the illusion where Mio was about to do the vertical drop on your manhood. (Pyro Jack and Jack Frost): WHAT! SHOW US THIS SCENE NOW). This convinces her not to kill Zolgia and escapes outside where he’s confronted by Yahiro who wants to kill him because Mio’s foster parents were actually the caretakers at an orphanage Yahiro stayed at when he was little (ohh~). We also see that Maria’s mom is alright and safe thanks to Yahiro (and for some reason smaller than her daughter). Before Yahiro can kill Zolgia his mansion transforms into a dangerous monster trapping the others inside. The monster is immune to both physical and magic attacks and will continue to multiply destroying the world. Zest tells them that the only way to stop the monster is to attack it at its center and she offers to lead the way to it (she’s joining the harem). Basara, Mio, and Yuki go while Maria stays behind to protect her mother.

In the final episode the group battles their way to the core of the monster (giving it a stomachache, kidney failure, spine problems, and a lot more stuff) and taking on its living immune system until they finally reach the core where Zest offers her life to create an opportunity for Basara to deliver the final blow to the beast since she’s actually a homoculus that Zolgia created and used as a prototype to create the ultimate soldiers (no offence Zolgia but Marvel beat you to it). As the immune system is about to attack her Basara pushes her out of the way, dodges the immune system, and uses banishing shift on the core destroying the monster. Once the monster is defeated Yahiro kills Zolgia and Basara watches him do it (that’s a little messed up even for you Basara. Don’t change). Basara returns home where he greets everyone and through a strange event Basara snaps and attacks Mio kissing her and everything (Jack Frost: He snapped! (Pyro Jack): I knew he couldn’t resist turning into a siscon). He regains control of his body (he cockblocked himself) where Mio says she’ll forgive him if he kisses her again (she wants the D) but the sexual atmosphere gets interrupted by Yuki who comes in and kisses Basara in front of Mio and Zest (you’re up next Zest). This causes an argument to breakout between the two forcing Basara to get Maria who was planning on leaving secretly but when she sees what’s going on she decides to stay and kisses Basara in front of everyone (okay. Now its Zest’s turn). The season ends with Maria’s mom returning to the demon realm with Zest (aww~ I wanted her to stay and join the harem. Hopefully she comes back next season), life returning to normal for our heroes, and Jin making a visit to the current the demon lord who he wants to thank for looking after his kids.

The anime does have an OVA that came out 3 months after the anime ended and oh my God it is borderline hentai. No seriously, I think this anime might have just surpassed To Love Ru and Highschool DxD in terms of ecchiness. The episode focuses on the daily life of Basara. In the first half Maria invades Mio’s dream pretending to be Basara and molesting Mio in her sleep (*Jack Frost gets a snowbleed and passes out again followed by Pyro Jack who gets a firebleed and passes out as well*). She gets stopped by Basara and they let her sleep. Maria feeds Mio’s panties to Basara for breakfast (you are messed up beyond words Maria) where Yuki sees this and demands that Basara eat her panties to be on equal ground with Mio (is this the new thing in Japan, eating panties? Am I gonna start seeing doujins about this?). Mio finally comes in and zaps Basara and Maria with lightning for their perverted antics ending part 1. In part 2 we focus on Chisato and Basara. After Basara helps Chisato take off a suggestive swimsuit (she is tempting him) she invites him back to her place for dinner (just say you wanna sleep with him that’s obviously what you wanna do) where she cooks him a nice meal, they do the hug from behind play, and she teases and flirts with him (scene here: //youtu.be/0Yr0N_pWbKI. Wow, this OVA is playing out like a short hentai). Because she doesn’t want Basara to go back home with the scent of her perfume she tells him to take a bath and she joins him where she washes his back with her breast and Basara gives her tips on how to do it better (*The Jack Bros. stagger to their feet still having their nosebleeds and see the scene unfolding before their eyes* (Pyro Jack): I. . .won’t be defeated by this. Right Frost? (Jack Frost): Yes! My body may be weak but my mind and spirit will never fall). She begins to feel good doing it and in the heat of the moment kisses him (I knew this was coming). So I guess this is where the MC faints right? Hell no! He kisses her back not once but multiple times and then he begins rubbing and sucking her breast with her not stopping him but instead holding him close so she can keep on kissing him and eventually he makes her cum (*The Jack Bros. have massive nosebleeds and faint yet again* (Pyro Jack): I die with so many regrets). Oh my God! I mean holy shit this is intense! The anime just went straight hentai on us and I couldn’t be happier. I’m sorry but for the longest time all the MCs in harem/ecchi animes have all been pansies afraid to go the next level but Basara here just says fuck it and goes to town on one of his harem members. After that hot scene we see Basara come (as I’m sure all of you have after watching this scene) to on the bathroom floor implying that what we just saw was just a dream thought up by Basara who passed out from the heat (bullshit that was real. Trust me, you don’t dream up something that intense and she doesn’t tell him nothing happened). Basara than leaves saying he has a lot to think about (I would imagine so).

Final Thoughts

Shinmai Maou no Testament was an enjoyable anime that I liked watching but it does make a lot of dumb and clumsy mistakes. The story is a little silly and unbelievable at times but it’s nothing that annoys or distracts me from the anime. The characters are surprisingly well-developed throughout the anime. I do like how Basara is this badass who’s not a total wimp like most guys in harems and takes action immediately while holding his own in a fight. He doesn’t win by luck or by deus ex machina he wins because he has amazing skills and nothing more. Mio is a tragic heroine who lost everything in the past but still presses onward with a smile on her face and cares for those around her. Despite her past she still trusts other people and seeks their companionship and she’ll always use her powers to defend those she cares for. Ayaka Asai also does a good job voicing her. Not bad for her first major role in an anime. Maria is pretty much our perverted character in the series who loves lewd acts and is always getting in trouble because of it. Yuki kind of serves as a female Basara with a little bit of Mio and Maria in her. She’s pretty strong and not afraid to fight but when she wants Basara’s attention she’s not afraid or embarrassed to act lewd and go on the offensive to get him. The villains are also pretty evil and menacing and when the main villain of this season meets his end at the hands of those he wronged in the past you feel satisfaction at his demise.

The major problem I see with this season is the anime is all over the place. At one moment we’ll get an action scene or some good drama between the characters but then the next scene we’ll get a fanservice scene out of nowhere. The fanservice isn’t bad as it’s quite steamy and hot but it’s blended horribly into the anime. Now it is possible to blend action with an ecchi anime but here it’s done horribly and forced which really drags the story down at a few spots. It also doesn’t help that the censorship in this anime is annoying and blocks half the screen whenever it appears. Normally it doesn’t bother me but the censorship in this anime is terrible (it’s a good thing I don’t consider this a factor in my final score otherwise this anime would suffer badly). The anime also doesn’t explain the state of the demon world. What’s it like, are there various demon clans with different leaders that we should know about, and who is the current demon lord and what are his goals? There’s also a lot of characters not fully explained or looked into. Is Yahiro working for himself or with others, what’s the deal with the Hero Clan, are there multiple hero clans or just this one clan and what’s the mystery with Chisato, we know she plays some huge role in all of this so what is it? They present a lot of stuff to us in this world but we never get a chance to explore it nor do they explain it.

The animation and music is alright but I will say the character designs are great with plenty of detail to them and as for the action scenes they’re quite dull to me. They weren’t very exciting to watch. They were poorly paced, with not enough moving or fighting, and often seemed one sided at times. I was expecting more out of these matches instead of the same generic moves over and over again. The fanservice as I said before is good and borderline hentai that at a few times it gives To Love Ru and Highschool DxD a run for its money. But because it’s so poorly blended into the anime it loses effect badly. Both To Love Ru and Highschool DxD do a fantastic job telling their stories and blending it well with their ecchi scenes that flow naturally and don’t at all feel force or distracting from the actual anime.

Final Score

The final score for the first season of Shinmai Maou no Testament is a 5.5/10 and it would have been a 5 or 4.5 had I factored in the terrible censoring of this anime. Shinmai is not a bad anime, like I said before I found the anime enjoyable. I mean, it’s an ecchi anime with an actual plot that’s moving forward and keeps your attention but the many problems of not exploring it’s world, dull fight scenes, and horrible blending of ecchi and action really bring this anime down for me. Hopefully the second season will fix all of this and give us an anime that is on the level of To Love Ru and Highschool DxD. I’m still looking forward to this anime and have high hopes for it. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
