Well, seeing as how I’ve reviewed the first half of Mahou Sensei Negima and pointed out the number of screw-ups the anime made I felt it was only right to tell you how they really happen in the manga. So for this side blog I’ll tell you what really happen in the manga and how the anime screwed-up.
Screw-up #1: The scene with Asuna doing that ritual in the bath never happened. In the manga the first scene we see is Negi graduating from the magic academy, getting his assignment to be a teacher at Mahora Academy, and then arriving at the academy where we meet Asuna and Konoka as their running to school and Negi catching up with them.
Screw-up #2: When Asuna was roughing Negi up for his comment about love Takahata saw him from the window and came down to greet him. At that time Negi also told Asuna and Konoka that he was going to be their homeroom teacher for the year instead of them finding out in the class like the others.
Screw-up #3: Takahata didn’t accompany Negi to the class instead it was the school nurse Shizuna.
Screw-up #4: In the anime Negi sneezes and blows away Asuna’s clothes in class. This never happened. This event happened when Negi first arrived at Mahora Academy when he was greeted by Takahata. A strain of Asuna’s hair brushes pass Negi’s nose, he sneezes and he blows off Asuna’s clothes in that process revealing her bear panties.
Screw-up #5: Almost all of the hair colors of the students are wrong.
Screw-up #6: This one is a personal nitpick but it seems like the faces are all similar on some characters. It just seems like they just copied and paste the face on a different body and just change the eye color.
Screw-up #7: The seat arrangement is all wrong all the girls are sitting in the wrong seat. Now to be fair they fix this by the next episode so while not a big screw-up it’s still a screw-up.
Screw-up #8: While it’s true the girls plan a welcome party for Negi we don’t see them planning it. We just cut to Negi recounting the events in class.
Screw-up #9: Negi got the class roster before he met his class not after.
Screw-up #10: Okay this does happen in the manga but I just wanted to point out the editing mistake made in this scene. When Asuna grabs Negi and starts to run off we see that he has a staff in his hand and another staff left on the ground. That’s just poor editing on their part.
Screw-up #11: We never see any of the girls show-off their club activities. All we see is Ayaka giving Negi a bronze statue of himself and Asuna insulting her and them getting into a fight.
Screw-up #12: Asuna doesn’t come to the conclusion of relying on magic to confess her feelings by herself. After she ran out crying Negi catches up to her and tells her that she should have more courage and not rely on magic for things like love. This scene shows that Negi is a smart child and that he can act and say things like a real teacher would.
Screw-up #13: Asuna and Konoka knew that Negi was going to stay with them. After meeting with Takahata he goes to meet the principal and asks them if Negi could stay with them in which Konoka says yes. It is also during this scene that the principal tries to get Negi to check out Konoka.
Screw-up #14: The scene of Negi leaving, going to Takahata’s house never happened.
Screw-up #15: The scene of Asuna saying she did want the love potion never happened and Negi didn’t use 4 leaf-clovers to create the love potion he just uses these powerful pills to create it.
Screw-up #16: Once again, never happened. While it’s true that Asuna practices her confession on Negi she practices it in the school hallway after she left the welcome party and the rest of class walked-in on the confession and a misunderstanding ensues.
Screw-up #17: While Asuna does run out of the school we never see the various club activities the girls take part in.
Screw-up #18: We never see Asuna pass the test in the manga. The chapter just ends with her constantly failing.
Screw-up #19: The scene with Konoka rubbing Neosporin on Asuna’s chest never happened. Her chest was perfectly fine.
Screw-up #20: He never rescued Nodoka a second time.
Screw-up #21-29: the events in each episode happen out of order. The correct order is episode 10, 12-13, 11, 9, 6, 5, 7, and 8
Screw-up #30: In the manga when the girls mistake Negi for a prince they just chase him around the school where he eventually runs into Konoka who is running away from the principal’s marriage candidates. Also, while it’s true the girls get in the bath with him in truth they kidnap him, throw him into the bath and instead of trying to seduce him they are trying to cheer him up because he was feeling sad that he lost to Eva.
Screw-up #31: Asuna showed up after Negi deflected Eva’s attack and Konoka was there as well.
Screw-up #32: Eva never bit her tongue she just decides to retreat when Asuna shows up.
Screw-up #33: He didn’t run away after the battle. He just ran to Asuna crying in fear like a child. He didn’t run away until a few chapters later in the manga.
Screw-up #34: Kaede was actually naked when she got in the bath with Negi.
Screw-up #35: He doesn’t meet Asuna Chamo back at the academy. In the manga they saw Negi fly to the mountains, chase after him but got lost in the forest for one night. As he’s flying back to the academy they spot him and call for his help.
Screw-up #36: In the manga Negi actually sees the flashback of Eva and Nagi while taking care of Eva who has the flu. In the manga after returning from the mountains he goes to deliver a letter of challenge to Eva at her cottage in the academy. When he arrives he and Eva are about to fight but Eva collapses from her flu and while Chachamaru goes to get medicine for her, Negi watches over her and she mutters Nagi’s name in her sleep so Negi uses a spell to take a look at what she’s dreaming about.
Screw-up #37: Eva didn’t cause the blackout. In the manga the power just went out for maintenance purpose on the school. Eva just takes advantage of the blackout.
Screw-up #38: In the manga after Eva escapes Negi’s ropes and Chachamaru tosses his staff from the bridge he goes into spoiled boy mode and complains how it was unfair that she escaped and demands a do over. But Eva slaps him and tells him to stop acting spoiled and man up.
Screw-up #39: Takamichi was never there.
Screw-up #40: Negi wasn’t going to deliver anything to a shrine. Asuna and Konoka just wanted to give Negi a tour of the campus but the twins came along and took him on a tour of the school instead.
Screw-up #41: The only clubs we see in the manga are the basketball, swimming, and cheerleading club.
Screw-up #42: Episode 10 is mostly done right except the field that they were playing Dodgeball was actually on a rooftop of a school building. Dangerous place to have a field if you ask me. Also, during the game the high schoolers injure Asuna which gets Negi upset that he’s about to release a magic spell but Asuna stops him and tells him to play fairly. There was a scene in the anime where one of the girls uses a machine to throw the ball, which never happens. At the end of the game in the anime Ayaka and the high schooler never exchange pictures of Negi and never become friends. In the manga after Negi’s class is declared the winner the leader of the high schoolers takes a shot at Asuna with the ball but Negi deflects it back at the high schoolers which destroys their clothes and the chapter ends with the high schoolers asking Negi to join their dodgeball team.
Screw-up #43: In the manga Negi never got a laptop. When Chisame was walking back to her dorm room which is on campus not off, he follows her to see if she’s alright, walks in on her Chiu show, and invites her to join the class party that they’re holding for Negi. When she arrives at the party Negi sneezes and blows away her costume that she wore to the party. The cosplaying competition and the war between the class and Chisame for the number one website never happened and was all made up for the anime.
Screw-up #44: Asuna never learns that Negi will leave the academy if they fail until later.
Screw-up #45: Konoka actually joins Negi and the Baka Rangers in the manga and Nodoka and Haruna are guiding the group from their dorm and not from outside the building.
Screw-up #46: Negi doesn’t keep triggering the traps they just happen by themselves in the manga.
Screw-up #47:The twins didn’t tell everyone that Negi would leave if they failed. In the manga it was actually one of the cheerleaders of the class.
Screw-up #48: They don’t study non-stop they take breaks and bathe in the water while poking fun at Negi who walks in on some of them bathing.
Screw-up #49: The class actually came in first place for exams.
Screw-up 50&51: Negi was never working on any potions when Konoka came in. In the manga chapter for this episode it just starts with Negi and Konoka in the city and the cheerleaders spot them. The whole goddamn opening scene for the anime never happened.
Screw-up 52: The cheerleaders never picked a fight with Negi and he never sneezed.
Screw-up 53: Negi and Konoka weren’t shopping because they broke Asuna’s clock. They were shopping because the next day was Asuna’s birthday. Hell, it wasn’t even an alarm clock it was a small organ that played her favorite song.
Screw-up 54: The whole class never showed up to Ayaka’s house it was just Negi, Asuna, and Konoka.
Screw-up 55: This scene never happened in the manga. Negi and Ayaka are just talking and when Ayaka hugs Negi that’s when Asuna kicks Ayaka from behind.
Screw-up 56: The event for this episode does happen but not in the way the anime portrays it. I’ll come back to it later.
Episode 17 never happens in the fucking manga! It was all made up except for Honoka’s confession which once again I’ll get in to that later.
Episode 18: Nothing in this episode happens what so goddamn ever in the manga! Nothing! Nothing! This is beyond embarrassing. It’s almost insulting how much they screwed-up. It’s like they had no respect or idea of the events in the manga and just decided to make their own up when they had so much material to work with.
Episode 19: Now to be fair I can’t really get mad at this episode because we never find out how Sayo dies. In the manga the origin of her death is left a mystery, nobody really knows how she dies including herself. Ken said he originally was going to make her backstory a little darker by saying she was murdered but at the last minute he decided to just leave it a mystery. While I have no problem with her backstory in the anime the reveal of her in the manga is done better. In the manga the school paper says that the class has a ghost so a few of the students decide to exorcise her from the class. When Nodoka tries to use her magic powers to communicate with her the class misunderstands her and she tries to use her powers to communicate with but instead causes havoc in the class and makes things worst. When they corner her Negi and Kazumi stop them and tell them all she wanted was to be friends with everyone. After finally having friends she vanishes and the group believes she became a Buddha but in actuality she just moved to the side. Episode 20-21: This is where we begin the Kyoto arc which is one of the best arcs in the manga and the arc the anime really screwed-up on. They left out so many events and characters during this arc and it’s a shame too because this would have been a good stopping point for the anime. Okay, the story of between Setsuna and Konoka does happen in the manga, as well as the whole kidnap Konoka to summon a legion of demons. On the second day of the trip Nodoka confesses her feelings to Negi which leaves him in a state of shock. Later on, the class notices that he’s acting weird so they have Kazumi follow him to find out what he’s hiding. While following him she sees Negi use his magic to save a kitten from being hit by a car and she quickly comes to the conclusion that Negi is a mage and tries to get Negi to confess to it. When she finally gets her proof Negi unleashes his magic power because he can’t handle the stress of being discovered and dealing with Nodoka’s confession. His crying causes Kazumi to fly into the air but he quickly saves her and her proof gets destroyed. After talking with Chamo she decides to keep it a secret and they both plan an event for the second night of the trip where they have a Negi kissing contest to earn money.
This is where the event for episode 16 takes place, not during summer vacation but during the second night of the school trip. The teams were essentially the same except in the manga Ayaka and Chisame were a team. The Negi clones weren’t caused by Negi passing out they were caused by substitution stencils that Negi got from Setsuna in which he was trying to write his name on one of them but kept messing up (here’s how they explain it:http://www.mangahere.com/manga/mahou_sensei_negima/v05/c035/20.html). He was using them as his stand-in since Kazumi disguised as a teacher told him to stay in his room for the night but he decides to patrol the hotel for intruders in case they show up for Konoka again. When he leaves the room the thrown away Negis take physical form and stay in the room waiting for orders. When Nodoka comes in and sees the five Negis she passes out and they get the idea that their mission is to kiss a girl and leave the room. During the competition Yuna and Chisame get captured by one of the teacher’s and are forced to squat in the lobby until morning and Makie and Ayaka form a team. In the anime nobody wins but in the manga after all the teams kiss the fake Negi’s and they explode the real Negi returns where he meets Nodoka and Yue in the lobby. Yue causes Negi to trip and he falls on top of Nodoka where he kisses her and Nodoka is declared the winner and receives her very own pactio card because Chamo formed a pactio circle around the hotel.
The next day Negi and Asuna get attacked by a character the anime left out called Koutaru a half man half wolf mage who is the same age as Negi and would later go on to become Negi’s friend and rival and was hands down one of the best characters in the series and one of my favorite characters. Unlike Negi who is mature, well-mannered, thought things through, and smart for his age Koutaru is the complete opposite. He was a hothead who enjoyed seeking out strong opponents and fighting them, he would fight using his instincts instead of his mind like Negi. He wasn’t well-mannered like Negi; he had manners and respected others but he would occasionally talk back to people and get mad a lot more easily than Negi when it came to people he cared about. He wasn’t smart like Negi but he was more street-wise so he caught on to tricks and lies better than Negi did. Finally, he’s chivalrous, he would never hit a woman unless she was a powerful fighter like Ku-fei or Kaede and even then he was uncomfortable with the idea of hitting a female that he would usually hold back when fighting them and instead would try to knock them out without causing any harm to them. Anyway, in the manga he fights against Negi but loses to him thanks to Nodoka who uses her magic book which allows her to read the minds of her opponents as long as she knows their name and there within a reasonable distance from her. While Negi fights him Setsuna is having another fight against Tsukiyomi who shows up in front of Setsuna’s group and challenges her to a sword fight in the middle of town which everyone mistakes as a tourist attraction.
After the fights they make it to Konoka’s house where everyone is turned into stone and Konoka gets captured again. During the fight to save Konoka, Setsuna reveals that she’s half-human half-crow demon and has crow wings that she uses to fly. In the anime we never see them. Eva does show up and save everyone. At the end of the fight Konoka doesn’t save Setsuna from dying Setsuna doesn’t have the near death experience Negi has the near death experience because he overexerted his magic and Konoka saves him by kissing him and forming a pactio with him. Setsuna also formed a pactio with him in a scene earlier when they were fighting the hoard of demons trying to get to Konoka. Also, for those of you wondering how Kaede, Ku-fei, and Tatsumiya knew the group was in danger and needed help Yue called them and told them about the situation. In the manga, Yue along with Nodoka, Haruna, and Kazumi go with Negi and the others to Konoka’s house and she somehow managed to escape being turned to stone. It’s also at this battle she comes to the realization that magic is real and wants to become a mage. Another thing the anime messed up on is that Sayo wasn’t on the school trip. At this point in the manga she was not introduced yet. The Kyoto arc had so many fight scenes, events, surprises, and characters the anime skipped entirely and was a completely insult in the anime that they rushed into just 2 episodes. Why!? As I said before this would have been a good stopping point for the anime and earn the show enough popularity to get a second season.
Episode 22: The thing the anime got right in this episode was Negi wanting to become Eva’s apprentice but what the anime messed up on was that Eva doesn’t accept Negi right off the bat. In order for him to become her apprentice he has to pass a test which is to land a hit on Chachamaru in a fight without using magic. So he gets Ku-fei to train him in Chinese-kenpo and when the test comes around Negi manages to hit Chachamaru and become Eva’s apprentice. This would have been a great OVA for the anime. Maybe.
As you all know episodes 23-26 are all made up. They never happened in the manga; it came out of nowhere, and was a dumb ending to the anime that was already messed up from the beginning. Do you see why I don’t like this anime so much? There was no respect or attention to the source material and was a rushed anime that showed all the events out of order, made up their own events that were stupid and weird, skipped many important events, and downplayed a good chuck of the characters. For me, this was one of the worst animes I’ve ever watched and one of the worst manga to anime adaptions I’ve seen. There are other animes of the series out there and I’ll get to them down the road but just know that this anime sucks, you shouldn’t watch it and if you really wanna get into the series read the manga. The manga is way better, the characters are developed greatly, the story is good, the action is great, and despite the loose ending that the manga had it is a manga worth checking out and reading.
