Project #304: Owari no Seraph Part 2

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Welcome to the second part of Owari no Seraph. Released in the same year as the first season, the second season made it’s debut about 3 months after the first season ended which is something I’ve notice a lot of 24-episode animes doing as a late. It’s not a bad idea, show the first 12 episodes and then use that 3-month break to edit and work out any problems for the second half. Let’s see what’s next in the war on vampires as we take a look at Owari no Seraph S2.

Opening and Ending Theme

The opening for the second season is “Two souls -toward the truth-” by fripSide. This song was a major improvement of the first opening. The song gets you hyped right a way and matches up perfectly with the visuals. The timing and everything is just right here and you have plenty of time to take everything in.

The ending is “Orarion” by Nagi Yanagi. This song is already better than the first ending. Why? Because it’s sung by Nagi Yanagi. If you want to have an emotional song that brings tears to the eyes of viewers than you get Nagi to sing and that’s what she does here. The emotional weight and the lyrics combined with the amazing voice of Nagi just blows me away every time I listen to this song.

Episodes 1-4

The season starts with Shinoa and Guren sparring with each other where we find out Guren is responsible for killing Shinoa’s older sister (you had a sister?). Long ago Shinoa’s sister fell in love with Guren (have you heard the guy’s voice? It’s like sex) but got possessed by a demon and Guren was forced to kill her. Now, her soul rests within Guren’s sword and Shinoa believes that he’s become possessed by the sword which is why he’s doing shady things behind the scenes and not telling her anything (maybe. Or you just have a big mouth). Guren assures her that he is in control of his actions (alright then no excuse if things go downhill for you in the future) and takes his leave. Shinoa finds Yu in the library looking for a way to turn Mika back into a human (fuck him! He betrayed us I say let him die) but there doesn’t seem to be any known way to do it (kill the head vampire). Yu gets called to meet the Haragis the family responsible for uniting Japan after the vampire invasion and just happens to be Shinoa’s family (well family get ready to meet your son-in-law). Yu goes to meet them where along the way he gets stopped by Guren and Mitsuba who warn him to be wary of the Haragis (in this world sometimes your enemies are closer than you think). He goes to the meeting which is being run by Kureto, oldest son of the family and all-around prick who has a personal squabble with Guren (is it because he killed your sister?). Yu was bought in because they believe he’s a spy for the vampires since all the orphans in his area were used in some vampire experiments and they believe he’s hiding something from them. Yu says he’s not a spy and is forced to be Kureto’s lab rat in order to save Shiho and Yoichi.

Episode 2 starts with the others helping Yu with his demon manifestation which is basically drawing out the power of the demon in his weapon. Yoichi already has a good handle on his demon manifestation because apparently he and his demon have become good friends (they’re BFFs for life). Yu allows the sword to drink his blood and his mind goes into the sword to face Asuramaru (who I have just found out is a boy. I honestly thought he was a girl) where we get a psychological battle where Yu beats Asuramaru easily and as a promise for helping him out Yu says he’ll become Asuramaru’s friend (he looks like he could use a friend). With Yu mastering demon manifestation, we shift our focus to the vampires who have discovered that Yu is the Seraph of the End (how many times will this anime implode on itself?) and this has got them all worried (woah a vampire scared of something? Never thought I see the day). We return back to Yu and the others where its Shiho’s turn to take his demon manifestation trial where he has a bit more trouble. His demon is Kiseki-O some kind of loli-wolf girl (call the cops! Yoichi is using a little girl to fight). Shiho surprisingly almost loses to Kiseki-O who tries to get him to kill his sister saying that she’s holding him back and his life would be so much easier if he didn’t have to worry about her (didn’t you try this already, it didn’t work). But Shiho remembers how hard Yu fights for his family (which I’m starting to think might be yaoi in the works) and manages to fight to regain control of the situation. With this, now everyone in the team can do demon manifestation and Shinoa and Mitsuba discover something about the boys’ past. Their past records have been deleted.

We start episode 3 with the boys getting ready to enjoy a nice breakfast done by the girls (can they cook?) only to see the kitchen on fire (that answers my question). After Shiho cooks them a nice meal Shinoa brings up two topics to discuss. One is Yu going berserk on the battlefield and almost killing Shinoa (which seriously needs to be explained) and the other is whether or not the group can trust Guren down the road (you can’t but in a world where your enemies are all around you and your allies are few the best thing you can do is stick with the enemy you know the best). Speaking of Guren, he goes to meet with Kureto who tells him the vampires are planning to launch a full attack on Tokyo in one month and he wants Guren to take his troops to Nagoya and wipe out the 10 vampire nobles residing in the area. Kureto also shares his dreams with Guren about wiping out all the vampires in Japan and then crushing the other human and vampire civilizations in the world to become the new king of the world (okay, so are we sure the vampires are the villains in this anime? Because I’m starting to think it’s this guy). Back with Yu and the others, Yu decides to stay with Guren saying he trusts him (it’s either Guren or the douchebag who wants to rule the world. Like I said before I’ll stick with the enemy I know the best). As for the vampires in this episode, Mika is going with the main force to Nagoya where his plan is to save Yu from the humans but also from the vampires.

In episode 4 the group is on their way to Nagoya but before going there they’re stopping at a rest stop with the rest of the force to go over strategies. Along the way they fight against horsemen and arrive late pissing Guren off so he decides to have a mock battle with them to teach them a lesson and show Shinoa her shortcomings as a commander. After losing, Guren says that even though they’re strong they need to work on teamwork and when a guy by the name of Makoto opposes the group joining in the mission because of their lack of teamwork, Guren puts them in his company telling him and his team to teach them what teamwork is all about (should of kept your mouth shut son). While that’s going on, in another area further down (just keep going for 25 miles down the road and get off exit 32 north) we see the vampires capture a group of children where Mika even tries to suck the blood out of them but stops himself. Apparently, Krul’s blood is no longer enough to satisfy his thirst meaning his transformation is almost complete and soon he will become a true vampire.

Episodes 5-8

It’s mission time in episode 5. Shinoa and Makoto’s team are given a mission to take down Lucal a vampire noble in the Nagoya area who goes out to the park at a certain time to enjoy a drink of blood each day (would you like some cheese and cracker to go with your blood sir?). They have Yoichi and another sniper try to take him down, but he senses their shots and uses his adviser as a shield forcing the remaining units to go in and take him down. We get a pretty good fight scene where once they capture him he cuts his own hand off to escape and Shiho provokes him with the hand and he charges at him where Yu strikes him but he refuses to die at the hands of humans so he takes his own life (at least he can say he went out on his terms). Back with Guren, they barely manage to defeat another noble and receive word that the progenitor Crowley is holding some of their teammates hostage at city hall and is daring them to come and rescue them.

In episode 6 the remaining squads gather in the park where Guren tells them they’re going to raid the city hall building, save their comrades, and kill Crowley along with the other 2 vampire nobles in the building (good plan, I can’t see this obviously going wrong at all). One squad stays behind in case other squads come and as they wait Mika and the other vampires come and surround them. Having no other option their leader orders them to swallow their cyanide pills in order to avoid giving intel (https://youtu.be/KOh3MhcLFVg?t=16s). But Mika stops the leader from taking her pill and says he won’t kill her if she tells him where Yu is (Mika: And if he’s not a virgin anymore so help me~). She takes a gamble believing that Yu is important to him and decides to put a little trust in him. She tells him where Yu is headed but she says that if Mika’s entire squad goes they’ll all be wiped out so they make a convincing lie to steer the rest of the troops away from city hall and the leader tells Mika to kill her but he refuses to do it (dude, they’re gonna torture her. And possibly rape her as well. I don’t know them all that well, but it sounds like something they would do). This gives her no choice but to take matters into her own hands, so she tries to kill Mika which forces him to kill her. After killing her, Mika makes up an excuse to go check out city hall and takes 5 soldiers with him to investigate leaving the main force to go to a place far away from city hall.

Episode 7 goes by pretty slow. Guren says they’re going to rescue as many hostages as they can in 5 minutes (the rest will either be killed by vampires or humans). Guren’s squad will act as decoys and get the attention of the nobles (hopefully killing at least one of them). After testing their defenses and changing locations the operation begins where Yu and the others see Guren and another soldier Shinya get trapped inside with Crowley and his bitches. They decide to go and help them and launch a surprise on the floor beneath them. Yu pops up trying to attack him but Crowley saw it coming and the episode ends with Crowley about to slice Yu.

In episode 8 just before Crowley can slice Yu he gets saved by Yoichi. They manage to rescue Shinya but they’re forced to leave Guren behind at the mercy of the vampires (if he’s gonna be at the mercy of Crowley’s bitches then I say we don’t rescue him). Yu can’t accept leaving Guren behind, so he says he’s going back for him despite everyone telling him not to (focus on the mission, not the family). He takes two more of those enhancement pills and his insides just implode on him (well he’s dead). Mika has also arrive onto the scene where he kills the five vampire escorts and begins looking for Yu (boy is he going to be pissed when he sees what happened to him).

Episodes 9-12

In episode 9 Yu dives into his subconscious where Asuramaru is there to greet him. He tells Yu that he raptured his organs killing him but despite all of this he’s still alive (but he will be on life support for rest of his life). Yu wants Asuramaru’s power and he gives it to him (there’s this trumpet in his dream that will call the angels but Asuramaru tells him not to blow it saying that angels are more dangerous than demons. I find that hard to believe). So Yu wakes back up and goes to face the vampires again where despite his power-up he’s still no match for them (even when he’s on a power trip he can’t do shit). He keeps telling Asuramaru to give him more power and he does until eventually Yu begins transforming into a demon who just wants to kill. Shiho comes in and uses his weapon’s power to turn Yu back to normal and Guren tells them to escape and leave him behind (alright, don’t die Guren, the world needs your sexy voice). They escape with Shinya and an unconscious Yu and meet back up with the rest of the force where they are to head to the airport and escape. As they run along the highway to the airport, Mika is there and fights his way through everyone (not killing a single soul) to get to Yu where Shinoa and her squad let him have Yu and cover for him (scene here: https://youtu.be/8g1mtP-Gl_8).

After finally getting to a safe spot in episode 10, Mika does everything in his power to fight his urge to drink Yu’s blood. Yu wakes up and sees the state that Mika is in and makes him drink his blood (let the yaoi doujins begin). Mika eventually gives in and drinks the blood thus becoming a true vampire (scene here: https://youtu.be/995lMOqw_Bo). After they settle down Mika tells Yu about how he and him were used in experiments to create the Seraph of the End (stop imploding your universe). Mika says they should run away together (yeah find a nice cottage secluded from the world and enjoy drinking Yu’s blood) but Yu says he’s not going to abandon his family and convinces Mika to help him save them. He agrees to help but he’ll only save Yu’s squad (screw everybody else).

In episode 11, Shinya’s group arrive at the airport where they find a message left by their superiors telling them to standby (in other words they’ve been left for dead). Everyone decides to abandon the mission (yeah fuck the Hiragi family. Except for you Shinoa, you’re okay) and go save Guren. Speaking of Guren, we see that he and Krul Tepes are in cahoots with each other because of some promise she made with Mahiru before the collapse of the world. We also see that Guren is kind of going through a Two-Face thing with his life. He’s got two personalities inside of him, one is the idealist wanting to protect everyone while the other is his girlfriend Mahiru who’s become a demon and is trying to take over his mind (all he needs is a coin and his transformation will be complete). Anyway, the two want the Seraph of the End and when Guren spills that it’s going to appear at the airport she hurries on her way there. Back at the airport just before everyone is set to move out the rest of the demon army shows up led by Kureto himself (hey Kureto does the term friendly fire mean anything to you?). Kureto unloads a crate which apparently is his secret weapon to defeat vampires however it requires the life of everyone at the airport. The crate unleashes black chains which begin attacking everyone and killing them leaving only a few remaining (apparently, he does understand the term friendly fire). Yu and Mika come in to save everyone where they try to run away only to have the vampires show up and an all-out war ensues.

In the final episode the now demon possessed Guren shows up and begins killing both humans and vampires to offer up their bodies as sacrifices for the Seraph of the End which is what Kureto has in the crate. After absorbing enough, the Seraph of the End finally reveals itself to be Mirai the younger sister of Shiho (what the hell?). After blowing a trumpet she soon unleashes Abaddon who then unleashes a horde of other demons which begin devouring everyone. Mika tries to escape with an injured Yu but Yu stops him saying he’s not going to abandon his family. After stabbing himself Yu retreats back into his mind where Asuramaru tells him that not even his powers will be enough to save everyone (than what good are you? Seriously these last few episodes you have been a disappointment). Yu instead goes for the trumpet, blows it, and as a result he gets possessed by another Seraph of the End known as the King of Salt (well if Mika is too spicy than Yu is too salty. I’ll see myself out). So you’ll never guess what Yu’s powers are, salt and with salt he turns all the demons on the field to salt as well as Abaddon (*laughs* he just defeated a fucking demon with salt. That’s a new one for me). Kureta tries to take him (turn him into salt! Turn him into salt) but instead gets pushed back (damn it) and orders his men to capture Yu. Asuramaru knocks Yu out to regain control of Yu’s body (aww so he does care) and the others go to pick him up where they defect from the demon army along with Mika. Krul Tepes tries to join them but she gets captured by Crowley and Ferid and is labeled a traitor by the vampires. The Shinoa squad successfully escapes and as the episode draws to an end we fast forward 4 months later where Guren is now working with Kureta, Ferid becomes the new leader of Japan’s vampire branch where more nobles arrive, Krul Tepes is nowhere to be seen, and as for Yu and the others they head out to rescue Mirai as well as Guren.

Final Thoughts

Owari no Seraph is a mixed bag of good and generic. The characters are pretty generic although I will say Shinoa is a fun character, nothing really gets explained so you’re in the dark most of the time about the motives of the characters and what they’re planning, and the setup is way too similar to Attack on Titan as both sides can be trusted and both can be seen as enemies. This is why I think the anime lost a lot of steam. Nobody could see it as its own creation and kept comparing it to Attack on Titan. It also didn’t help that everyone was getting bored of vampires and zombies were becoming the next big thing in horror. But despite this generic setup I will say the music in this anime is great, the fight scenes are well done and even beautiful to look at in slow motion just to see all the movements of the characters, and even though the setup is generic you can’t help but find yourself invested into what’s going to happen next as you want all your questions answered, and the anime can have the occasional funny moment that gets a chuckle out of you. Like I said you can have a generic anime and still be good.

Final Score

The final score for Owari no Seraph is a 6.5/10. Despite the average score I do think this series is worth checking out, particularly the manga. It’s a generic anime but I think it’s okay and I honestly would like to see a continuation of the anime. Maybe Wit can return to this series when they take breaks from Attack on Titan. Thanks for reading and tune in next week for my special Ani-ween-
