Project #343: The Rising of the Shield Hero Part 1

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Here’s a bit of trivia for you. What do Goku, Luffy, Guts, Kirito, Ed, Spike, Yusuke, Natsu, Kenshin, Asta, Kenshiro, Jotaro, Naruto, Mob, Saitama and me have in common? The answer, we don’t use shields. Despite a shield’s primary function being to protect people, authors refuse to give their main character a shield and I really don’t know why. Maybe it has something to do with male bravado as in to say, I’m going to take your best shot and still beat you, or it can be seen as a weakness by others to bring a shield into battle. Whatever the reason, most people would rather go into a fight with their bare hands than bring a shield. That’s not to say people who use a shield are pansies. Take Captain America for example, he goes into battle with a shield and I still think he’s one of the most badass superheroes out there and today’s hero from the Rising of the Shield Hero is no exception. Also known as Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari, this series takes a hero who uses a shield and makes him one of the most badass characters of all time. Getting started as a light novel in 2013 by Aneko Yusagi as well as a manga in 2014 the series has risen to popularity for its unique story and great main character. As I talked about last week, Once That Time I Got Reincarnated as Slime started airing, isekai anime received a resurgence of popularity. It showed everyone that isekai anime is still popular, just give us good characters and story and we’ll like it. So when it was announced that The Shield Hero would be getting an anime adaptation fans got excited and at the start of 2019 the anime began airing while under the production of Kinema Citrus. For those of you who don’t know this was the studio that gave us Made in Abyss so I say the series was in good hands. Let’s see why shields are awesome. This is The Rising of the Shield Hero.

Opening and Theme

The opening for this anime is “Rise” by Madkid who you might think is a band name but in truth, it’s a boy idol unit. This opening is awesome. It gets me bumped, the lyrics match up perfectly with the series, the singers are good, it’s just a great song. This is easily become one my favorite openings of the year so far.

For the 1st ending we have “Kimi no Namae” by Chiai Fujikawa. I didn’t really care for the ending all much. It’s not a bad song I just never really found myself sticking around and listening to it. I don’t know, it just sounds bland to me.

Episodes 1-4

We start the anime off with 45-minute special episode. We meet our main character Naofumi voiced by Kaito Ishikawa (Genos from One-Punch Man) a college student/otaku who lives the good life. One day when he’s in the library, he picks up a novel which talks about 4 legendary heroes who saved the world from calamity. Each hero used a different weapon. A sword, lance, bow, and shield (clearly the shield hero was the tank of the group). As he turns the pages, the book begins to glow and he gets transported to another world along with 3 other guys named Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki who come from alternate Japans. They get bought before the king (who is an asshole, I’m gonna get that out of the way right now) and tells them that they’re the four heroes summoned to protect their world from the waves of calamity. Motoyasu is the lance hero, Ren the sword hero, Itsuki the bow hero, and Naofumi is the shield hero and as such seen as the weakest and useless of the group so the king completely ignores him and gives him no respect. It also doesn’t help that he can’t use other weapons which he finds unfair as this limits his ability to fight (you want me to tell him or should you Capt.? (Captain America): Nah, he’ll figure it out on his own). The others are also passive-aggressive with him (fucking assholes). The king tells them they must go on separate journeys to train and get stronger so that they can fight the calamity and since this world works like an RPG, the more monsters they fight the better their stats. The next day they all head out on their journey with their companions but nobody wants to join Naofumi’s party except for one beautiful woman named Malty who jumps ship to join him. At first things go well. They get along with each other, she’s helpful, and she’s kind to him (too kind. Which means she’s a bitch and going to betray him). Sure enough, the beautiful woman betrays him by claiming that he tried to rape him and to add insult to injury she robbed him of everything. When he’s brought before the king and the others, they easily turn on him and Naofumi realizes that he was set up from the get go. They wanted to push him to the side because he was a shield hero, a worthless hero who could do nothing and would just get in the way. After seeing all the BS going on he tells them to just send him back home but he can’t go back without the others and the king won’t let them leave until the calamity ends. Naofumi refuses to work with guys who stabbed him in the back and says he’ll deal with the calamity himself and takes his leave (scene here: https://youtu.be/P2yVC5FSXCY, fuck all of you). So just like that he loses everything and goes to train by himself where we see he has strong resistance to monster attacks and his shield can transform into various other shields by absorbing other stuff. However, he soon finds himself at a roadblock where he can’t get stronger on his own and since he now has trust issues (thanks assholes at the palace) he refuses to work with other people. He catches the attention of a slave trader who offers to sell him a slave who in this world have a special curse on them that snatches their life away slowly and painfully if they go against their master meaning they can’t lie nor will they betray their master. Naofumi takes a look around and comes across an aijin (animal people) who he thinks about buying.

At the start of episode 2 Naofumi buys the aijin named Raphtalia a racoon girl (a man of taste I see) who was tortured by her previous owner so naturally she’s scared of what Naofumi will do to her (he won’t do much. Just have you fight monsters and pet your tail and ears when you least expect it). Naofumi starts off as cold towards her but he treats her well. He buys her food (scene here: https://youtu.be/RsHykPDXRnA), a weapon, armor, a ball and teaches her how to fight (scene here: https://youtu.be/T11xiuUNRUM). Plus, since she’s in his party, whatever experience she gains in battle, Naofumi gains it as well (scene here: https://youtu.be/8IP88qDtsRw, a good way to level up those weaker party members). They quickly get to work fighting where we do learn a little about Raphtalia’s past. Her village was attacked by the calamity and her parents sacrificed themselves to save her life (she’s too pure to die). As time goes on Naofumi and Raphtalia go to a new town called Lute where Naofumi hopes to find ores to sell for money (at his current level he’s not ready to save people or the world. What matters now is surviving, increasing his level, and getting money). They go into a cave and find some ore where they get attacked by a two-headed dog monster which scares Raphtalia since a Cerberus killed her parents and she hesitates to fight. Naofumi uses tough love and gets her to fight the Cerberus not for the experience boost but to help her conquer her fears and make her realize what her role is on Naofumi’s team (he’s the shield, she’s the sword. Separate they are powerless, but together they shall make one great warrior). After Naofumi gets the hell bit out of his shoulder, Raphtalia finally conquers her fears and fights the dog monster killing it and calling Naofumi by his name for the first time (scene here: https://youtu.be/XS9PM3FPGLU).

In episode 3 a week has passed since the events of episode 2 (wow, time flies. . .moderately). Naofumi has unlocked many skills and shields that he’s lost count of them all and Raptalia has grown into a beautiful young lady (great, now I can finally get the FBI off my case. I intend to keep petting her). Her personality has also changed too. She thinks for herself now, she speaks her mind, and she’s good at making deals (scene here: https://youtu.be/kY8m6Fv4rqQ, she’s become her own person). After this, we find out the first wave of calamity is approaching and Naofumi and the other heroes have gathered (fuck them! Sorry, still pissed about what went down in the first episode) to fight it. They all get teleported away to where the calamity will strike and it’s at Lute village. Not gonna lie, the calamity is a pretty terrifying experience. The sky goes dark, monsters appear, and attack everything in sight (imagine the blood moon from Breath of the Wild except the monsters appear right next to you and you got no weapons except a shield). The other three heroes go off to face the monsters ignoring the village which is crawling with monsters and the people haven’t evacuated yet (they’re dead). Naofumi and Raptalia go to defend the village where Naofumi acts as bait for the monsters while Raptalia gets everyone to safety. He manages to lure a good number of them to the tower and lights it on fire killing them while also doing minimum damage to the village (he’s very considerate. Most heroes would have been reckless and just destroyed the place). The royal knights aren’t so gentle as they light the place up with a fire spell not caring that Naofumi and Raptalia were in the village (what the hell assholes?). Despite this, Naofumi actually does protect them from the monsters and when their captain tells them to move forward while Naofumi and Raptalia fight the monsters, some of them stay behind and help them out. The calamity finally dies down where even though the village is a wreck (knowing the king, I doubt they have insurance on this) the people are safe and they thank Naofumi for protecting them (scene here: https://youtu.be/0ZINQM2SRS4. There’s more to being a hero than just getting the most kills in battle. There’s also saving as many lives as possible).

If the events in the first episode pissed you off, then the events in episode 4 are going to infuriate you but also make you happy. The episode starts at the palace where they have a banquet celebrating the heroes’ victory over the wave. While at the banquet, Raptalia gets captured by the guards and once Motoyasu (the dumbass with the white knight complex) hears about Raptalia being Naofumi’s slave, he challenges him to a duel where if Naofumi loses, Raptalia’s contract with Naofumi will be severed (what the hell man, mind your own damn business. Anybody with sight can see that Naofumi treats that girl right. This is why I can’t stand white knight characters). So they have their duel where the fight doesn’t play out like Motoyasu thought as Naofumi is hurting him. In fact, it actually seems like Naofumi can beat him (while Motoyasu was at parties and flirting, Naofumi was hard at work training and leveling up. Motoyasu may have a strong weapon but if the shield is stronger the weapon is useless). Just when it seems like Naofumi is about to win he gets hit with a magic attack courtesy of Malty (that bitch). With this distraction Motoyasu gains the upper hand and wins the duel. When Naofumi calls out Malty’s interference she pretends not to know what he’s talking and the king even comes to her defense saying he saw nothing. It’s here that we find out that Malty is the king’s daughter (this explains so much). Naofumi finally gets a full picture of what’s going on here. The king and everyone here is out to make him the villain (behind every great story there’s a great hero and behind every great hero there’s a great villain. The greater the villain the greater the hero the greater the story). No matter what he does or says, they won’t believe him and will continue to despise and belittle him. Naofumi’s contract with Raphtalia is severed and Naofumi expects her to betray him as well just like everyone else but instead she doesn’t. She stands up for Naofumi, smacks Motoyasu, and goes to Naofumi to comfort him saying she’ll stay by his side and doesn’t believe the rumors about him. At first Naofumi doesn’t believe her and why should he, he’s been betrayed before, how is this any different? But Raphtalia’s words manage to reach him and bring him back from the brink of no return where at long last he finally has someone in this world he can trust (this was a very well-done scene. Way better than the manga. While the manga was good the representation was off. In the anime we get to see a form of the amount of pain and suffering Naofumi has been through up to this point and how he sees the world around him. To him the world can’t be trusted, and he’s put up walls to protect himself from it. On top of that we see how in his mind, he still sees Raphtalia as that loli racoon girl we saw in episode 2. He doesn’t see her as a young lady. This represents just how warped and messed up his mind was). As Naofumi cries in the arms of Raphtalia, we actually see that Ren and Itsuki have some common sense and speak out against Malty’s interference (scenes here: https://youtu.be/4c5dFUkSi_4 and https://youtu.be/gRopK2aJlvY). At the end of the episode Naofumi and Raphtalia eat some leftover bread where for the first time Naofumi can taste the food of this world (it’s the taste of trust).

Episodes 5-8

In episode 5 things are looking up for Naofumi. After receiving his pay for helping in the wave, he and Raphtalia go to that slave trader and get her a brand new slave mark on her chest (I’m sure the arm would have sufficed but I’m sure she wants people to know who she belongs to) and buy a monster egg (scene here: https://youtu.be/qQo7Jw1CWDI). After that, Naofumi receives a medicine book from the local herbalist who wanted to thank him for protecting his relatives in Lute Village and a fortune-teller reveals he has an affinity for support and healing magic (so he’s basically a paladin, https://youtu.be/_oRiWJWXVPM? Well that explains the low attack power) while Raphtalia has an affinity for light and dark magic (ohh~ that’s a good combination). She gives him a grimoire free of charge as a thank you for helping her grandkids in Lute Village. Unfortunately, neither of them know how to read this world’s language but they vow to learn the language together. After spending the night in Lute Village, the next day Naofumi’s monster egg hatches and out pops a filoial (basically the chocobo of this world). Naofumi names her Filo and within 2 days becomes a full grown filoial (scene here: https://youtu.be/UqOgOAb_-dU). As time passes Motoyasu and the bitch arrive in the village (who opened the gates of Hell and let Satan’s daughter in?). It turns out the king has named Motoyasu the lord over the domain Lute Village is in, therefore, the village comes under his control and the bitch wants to increase taxes. Naofumi and the villagers oppose this new lordship and just before a fight breaks out these ninja looking people show up which has the bitch spooked (I don’t know who they are but anybody who spooks the bitch is a friend in my book). They hand her a scroll (it’s cool like butter on the muffin) which I can only assume was a royal decree naming Naofumi the new lord of the domain. The bitch challenges Naofumi to a race for ownership of the domain. The race will be between Motoyasu and Naofumi who will race three laps around the outskirts of the village. Naofumi will be riding Filo while Motoyasu will be riding a dragon the natural enemy of the filoials (also, man check. Scene here: https://youtu.be/6sC67qNuMiU, I just really wanted to put that scene in here). The race begins where Naofumi and Filo take a commanding lead, but the bitch has the knights sabotage them by making potholes and putting curses on them that make them go slower (when did I turn on the Wacky Races?). Despite all this cheating (and bullshit) Naofumi and Filo manage to pull an upset and become lord of the domain (scene here: https://youtu.be/znnOjb_Rm34). Rather than ask for money, Naofumi just asks for a carriage and receives a traveling pass which allows him to traverse the roads without having to pay anything. He decides to become a peddler, selling his medicine for money while also traveling the kingdom and leveling up. When they rest for the night, they wake up the next morning to discover a naked loli with wings lying by Naofumi (oh this will do wonders for his reputation) who just happens to be Filo (scene here: https://youtu.be/SB2lDayMVBw, and yeah, this introduction is different. In the manga, Naofumi actually took Filo back to the slave trader after the race because she grew so much. He decides to leave Filo there with the slave trader in order to get a better understanding of what she is but as he and Raphtalia leave, Filo transforms into a loli with wings begging him not to leave her. Now while the anime’s introduction to Filo is different and more linear as opposed to the manga, it doesn’t take out the important stuff).

At the start of episode 6 we find out that Filo is a queen filoial, a legendary bird that was thought to only exist in fairytales (every fairytale has a bit of truth in them). After getting a slave crest reprinted on her, the group continues to travel the countryside, selling goods, helping those in need, offering rides to other travelers, and stealing from other bandits (scene here: https://youtu.be/jRFuUm5PlRI, he’s got a reverse Robin Hood thing going on here). During their travels we do hear about the other heroes such as Motoyasu delivering a special seed to a famine land, Ren actually defeated a dragon (that’s pretty badass), and Itsuki remained a mystery in his adventures (who wants to walk with Itsuki?). As the episode continues Naofumi learns how to make gems and starts looking for a mana gemstone in order to make Filo some clothes. He finally discovers that the gemstone is inside a monster infested cave (just like all gemstones) so he and his party go into the cave where they fight against a nue (the Japanese version of the chimera. It’s got the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, the body of a tanuki, and a snake for a tail). They manage to beat the nue in a rather brutal way. They cause his ears to bleed, Raphtalia stabs it through the chest, and Filo crushes its skull (scene here: https://youtu.be/w25nVKs42uQ. Damn, play Rules of Nature over that shit). So they get the gemstone and Filo uses it to create magic thread of her own mana. They give the magic thread to the loli dressmaker who makes Filo her new clothes that won’t tear apart when she transforms (scene here: https://youtu.be/iIVwQxU2NF0).

Nothing much really happens in episode 7. In the first half Naofumi and his group clean up Motoyasu’s mess. Remember how I said last episode the dumbass introduced a rare seed to a village that was suffering from a feminine? At first, things were fine, but the plants slowly started growing faster and faster until they soon took over the village and became monsters themselves (just pray they don’t have a song number). Naofumi and his group go to the village and fight the plants where they defeat it with the herbicide (scene here: https://youtu.be/0DxOk4QsxSc, you would have gotten the same results with a flamethrower). After adding the plant to his shield collection and performing a few experiments, he manages to create a seed that will grow fruit quickly and not go on a murderous rampage like before. In the second half, the group goes a hotsprings village where Raphtalia is jealous of Filo hogging Naofumi’s attention (well what did you expect, you’re not a loli anymore). Desperate for Naofumi’s attention, Raphtalia sneaks out at night to find a love stone and give it as a gift to Naofumi but Filo is also looking to get Naofumi a gift so the two are in a race to the top of the mountain to find their respective gifts. Along the way they cross paths with a boar monster who later winds up ruining their respective gifts (oh you just made a terrible mistake) and our ladies make him pay (I love how even he realizes he fucked up at the end). They take the boar back to town where they find out they use it for the local ritual and get paid handsomely for it. They then use that money to buy Naofumi a crafting tool which he likes and he thanks them both with a head pat (scene here: https://youtu.be/SgiUbkrOvY4).

Episode 8 starts off with Naofumi cleaning up another mess left by the other heroes (idiots). This time he’s cleaning up Ren’s mess. About a month ago, Ren killed a dragon (which is kind of cool, I’m not gonna lie) which was terrorizing a village. However, the idiot didn’t do anything with the corpse. He just left it there and it began to rot away releasing some kind of poison in the air. As a result of this, a plague was released in the area and everyone began dying (are we sure these guys are the heroes destined to save this world? They seem to be doing more harm than good). Naofumi and the others take on the task of getting rid of the corpse only to arrive and see that the corpse has become a zombie dragon (kill it with fire). They fight the dragon where Filo rushes in, gets eaten (tastes like chicken), and is presumably dead (you ate the loli? You in a heap of trouble dragon). Filo’s supposed death awakens the rage within Naofumi and unlocks the dark series which houses one of his strongest shields, the rage shield. The rage shield is a powerful shield that harnesses all of Naofumi’s anger, rage, and hatred and sends him into a berserker mode where his power increases immensely. The downside however is that Naofumi’s mind gets consumed by his hatred that he attacks everything in his path whether they be friend or foe. As Naofumi is consumed by his hatred while fighting the dragon, Raphtalia manages to bring him back to reality but in the process gets burned horribly and can’t fight. Once Naofumi sees what he’s done, he quickly casts healing spells on Raptalia and isn’t sure how to fight the dragon (if he uses the rage shield he can win. But if he uses it he allows his mind to be consumed by hatred and he’ll destroy everything in his path). Just when it seems like he has no option, the dragon goes down thanks to Filo who was fighting the dragon from within and managed to get its core crystal. After disposing of the corpse properly, Naofumi begs the village doctor to treat Raphtalia. He does his best but it turns out she’s been cursed and the only way to rid her of the curse is to go to the church and get holy water. Naofumi apologizes for his actions and Filo gives him a part of the dragon’s crystal and he inserts it into the shield where it unlocks a new shield but his level isn’t high enough to unlock it (scene here: https://youtu.be/jN6mPH9hGCM). This episode was mediocre. The scenes were done way better in the manga as there was more struggle between Naofumi and his rage. It was even hinted that his rage and hatred had manifested into a being all of its own and was actually trying to get Naofumi to give in to him.

Episodes 9-13

Episode 9 is the long-awaited introduction of Melty, the second princess of the kingdom, the little sister of the bitch (Yume: You know her name’s Malty right? (Nitsuj): The bitch~! (Mira): Don’t waste your breath Yume. He’s not listening), and next in line for the throne (good for her. She hasn’t hit puberty yet and she’s already more mature then her bitch of a sister). While still helping out in the village, Naofumi and the others come across her and agree to escort her back to the capital while believing that she’s the daughter of a noble. Melty and Filo quickly become friends (scenes here: https://youtu.be/LL-SoL891p4 and https://youtu.be/PpQZe5qoc1k) and when they return to the capital, Naofumi goes directly to the church to get some holy water for Raphtalia’s curse. It’s here that we meet the pope, Balmus, and see that a few of the nuns try to sell him low quality water but he sees through their trick and is given better water at the request of the pope (I don’t trust the church, they are phony and the phoniest person there is the pope. Just look at that fake smile). After getting the holy water a young knight tries to approach Naofumi but he runs away only to run into Motoyasu who attacks him after finding out about Filo (stop trying to play Mr. Holy Knight jackass). He causes a disturbance in the public by destroying property until Melty comes in to stop the fight and Filo man checks Motoyasu (scene here: https://youtu.be/hNekNIxtem8, he ain’t having no kids). After both parties go their separate ways, Melty introduces herself properly to Naofumi and the others and wants to align herself with him but he says no as he doesn’t trust her (and honestly, can you blame him? The last two royals have literally gone out of their way to make his life a living hell. If I was in his shoes, I wouldn’t trust her either).

Surprisingly there’s not much to say about episode 10. Naofumi tells Melty to get lost and forbids Filo from seeing her again (an asshole move I admit, but again, what did you expect after everything he’s been through?). After Melty leaves, some knights who all came from Lute ask Naofumi if they can accompany him in battle. Since Naofumi has trust issues he says he’ll only let them in if they pay him 150 silver pieces for an item. Naofumi finds out that he can upgrade Raphtalia and Filo and tries to do it only to get rejected because his royal pain in the ass has issued a royal decree that forbids the country from upgrading the shield hero and his party (one. Just one punch. That’s all I ask for). This means that in order for Naofumi and the others to upgrade they’ll have to go to a different kingdom but with the next wave of calamity only a few days away there’s no time. We spend the rest of the episode seeing Naofumi travel around to get better prepared for the next wave where he takes a journey up north and sees Itsuki’s blunder. Apparently, Mr. Righteous started up a rebellion to overthrow a corrupted lord. At first, things were good and everything got better but the resistance took over and started taxing the people badly to the point where they’re all poor and don’t have money for food (he made their lives worst). Naofumi feeds the people and returns to the capital where Ren and Itsuki accuse him of stealing their rewards from their guild missions but Naofumi tells them of their blunders and they shut up (scene here: https://youtu.be/K3JK_MeujbE, worst heroes ever). When Naofumi gets his new armor, the knights come in with their 150 silver pieces. Naofumi gives them the item for free and tells them to use that money to buy better armor and equipment for the wave.

In episode 11 the second wave has appeared. Just like last time, Naofumi focuses on getting the people to safety first and protecting the village so they have a home to return to. Naofumi, Raphtalia, Filo, the knights, and this cool kickass granny keep the village safe but the other 3 heroes still haven’t defeated the boss of this wave yet (damn slackers). Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo go to investigate where we see the 3 heroes are being useless. They keep treating the situation like it’s a game and believe that if they defeat a certain boss they’ll win (a good theory but terrible execution and coordination). The only problem is, they each attack different creatures they believe are the bosses (what the hell are you guys? (Isis): Heroes. (Nitsuj): Assholes is what you are). Thanks to Naofumi, they’re able to find the real boss which is a bunch of ghost creatures called soul eaters (I’m pretty sure the bitch needs a good Shinigami chop). The soul eaters combine into one giant soul eater where none of their attacks seem to be damaging it (that’s one broken boss). Having no other choice, Naofumi uses the rage shield to fight where it works and is actually stronger thanks to the fact that he absorbed the zombie dragon who’s raged against Ren has manifested into the shield and tries to take over Naofumi. Thankfully, Naofumi is able to fight off the zombie dragon’s rage and keep his sanity where he summons an iron maiden (not the rock band, although that would be an interesting twist) and kills the soul eater with that (and they said it was just for show). As everyone takes a sigh of relief a new character appears named Glass who mocks the heroes saying that the only one worthy of being called a hero is Naofumi (amen sister. I know you’re a villain, but you are preaching the truth). She calls herself their enemy and prepares to fight them (scene here: https://youtu.be/PN_NNjX6OzU).

In the first half of episode 12 it’s Naofumi’s party against Glass (the other heroes. . .pretty much useless. Man, Naofumi’s back has got to be killing him. (Shizuku): Why do you say that boss? (Nitsuj): Because he is carrying everyone. Even Yoshi would feel sorry for him). Despite Naofumi’s best efforts his attacks do nothing to harm Glass and he has no other option but to run away. Thankfully, the wave ends and Glass retreats, but Naofumi can’t take a sigh a relief as he knows he and the others have to get stronger before the next wave or Glass will kill them (scenes here: https://youtu.be/VxyZ6Rt3PMc and https://youtu.be/dkOI5f60kig). After the wave, Naofumi gets summoned by the king who watched the fight from his magic crystal ball and demands that Naofumi tell him the secret to how he got so strong (let’s see hard work, patience, and not being an asshole). Naofumi says he’ll only tell his secret if the king grovels before him and begs for it (and make him kiss your ass Naofumi). This upsets the king obviously and he threatens to make Raphtalia and Filo pay for his actions but Naofumi counters that threat with an even bigger threat (scene here: https://youtu.be/tvpbKjwjHHg, the man can summon an iron maiden out of thin air. He could kill you and everyone in this palace easily and walk out the front door like nothing happened. Naofumi is not to be fucked with). Naofumi takes his leave, gets new supplies, and heads out for a new kingdom so he can upgrade Raphtalia and Filo. While resting along the road, he receives a visit from Melty who managed to catch up to him and begs him to return and apologize to her father (fuck him~. In case you haven’t noticed Melty, your dad’s an asshole). As Melty begins to throw a tantrum (she’s definitely royalty) one of the guards comes from behind and tries to kill her but Naofumi protects her (scene here: https://youtu.be/6lUgthqWL5M?t=93, a mutiny in the palace).

So at the start of episode 13 Naofumi and the others protect Melty from the knights who do a fake fight and capture it all on their crystal ball (*chuckles* the fact that crystal balls are like the cameras of this world makes me laugh). They retreat and the mages of the castle use their magic to edit the taping and make it look like Naofumi captured Melty and is now holding her hostage (damn, adobe ain’t got nothing on crystal ball editing). This video soon spreads throughout the kingdom and Naofumi and the others go on the run with Melty to try and escape to a new kingdom. As they travel we find out that this setup was most likely orchestrated by the king, the bitch, and the church of the 3 Heroes who worship the heroes of the lance, sword, and bow but consider the shield hero the devil (why, I have no idea. Compared to other heroes, he’s a saint). Basically, Naofumi’s actions have angered the believers of this faith and since the kingdom is mostly full of people who follow the religion of the 3 Heroes you can imagine how pissed they are that the shield hero is outperforming the other heroes at every turn (it’s like an X-Box fan wondering why everyone favors Playstation and Nintendo). Another good bit of information we find out is that the king married into the royal family which means that the queen has more power than the king (boy, that’s gonna boost the ego of all the feminists out there). They eventually get found and cornered by the 3 Heroes (*laughs* sorry, I couldn’t say that with a straight face) who blindly believe that Naofumi is the bad guy (because they’re idiots). The only one with a brain who actually questions this is Ren as he knows that Naofumi gains nothing from doing this (exactly! The nobles already hate him and his reputation is in the dump, why would he go through the trouble of ruining his reputation even more? THINK~). The bitch shows up and makes up the lie that Naofumi has a brainwashing shield that’s he used on Melty to bring her to his side (https://youtu.be/uSvJaYxRoB4, than why the hell hasn’t he used it to control you guys or take control of this fucking country? If he had that power don’t you think he would have used it by now? Idiots). Naofumi is ordered to hand over Melty but he refuses as he knows the bitch will kill her so he and his party escape with Melty (scene here: https://youtu.be/Nn6unGNPPIM). After getting to a safe spot they receive a visit from the queen’s agent who wants to speak with Naofumi directly.
