Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. It’s time for part 3 of our review of Digimon Ghost Game. The second half managed to give us some good scares but one thing I’ve noticed that’s missing is a story and major villain for the characters to face. Will we get that in the third part? Let’s find out.
Episodes 25-30
Alright, the third half of the anime starts off at a building that’s crimson red (well that’s not ominous or a red flag). This is the SV Company, a women’s jewelry/confectionary company which is run by vampire Digimon who invite influential women on the internet to their company, to drink their blood, and turn them into their mindless slaves who promote their products and get other followers (that’s so diabolical I can totally see real companies doing this if they had the chance). Ruli becomes their newest platinum member and gets invited to a tasting event but Angoramon is suspicious and gets help from the others to investigate this company. On the night of the event, we see that this group of blood drinkers is composed of Sangloupmon, Myotismon (another blast from the past), Matadrmon, and Dracumon (hey, they brought him back). Dracumon tries to take his revenge on Ruli only for Myotismon to destroy him as he wants to test her to see if she has what it takes to rule the world beside him as some sort of vampire queen (call the cops). Ruli runs away and meets back up with the others on top of the building where Angoramon got beat by Sangloupmon. The others take on Myotismon (that is a terrible idea) where Jellymon gets taken down easily leaving only Beetlegammamon to fight and that goes about as well as you would expect (what is a Digimon? A miserable little pile of data). Just when it seems like Beetlegammamon is about to give into the darkness, Hiro saves him and he evolves into his ultimate form, Canoweissmon (and holy shit that is an unused monster card from Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds). Canoweissmon manages to defeat Myotismon (but knowing him he’ll most likely find a way to come back) and the other Digimon leave while all the women who were turned into vampires return to normal.
In episode 26 Angoramon runs into his old friend from the Digital World, Digitamamon. These two were once researchers of the Digital World (which explains why Angoramon is so wise and smart) and Digitamamon has been spending time in our world studying humans. Once Angoramon tells them how he’s living with a human, he sets up a meeting with between them and the others. Ruli and Angoramon arrive before everyone else where they chat with Digitamamon. At first, things are good, but they quickly go dark when Digitamamon tries to eat Ruli (wow it got Silence of the Lamb quickly up in here). Angoramon senses Ruli in danger and manages to save her from becoming a lunchtime snack. For Digitamamon eating humans gave them the most satisfying feeling ever (it was better than sex. (Corbin): Blasphemy! (Nitsuj): Woah, blasphemy? (Corbin): I know words). At first, it was an accident, but as Digitamamon kept eating the more it became obsessed with the taste of humans and couldn’t stop. The group fights against Digitamamon where their attacks do nothing against its hard shell (burn it with fire). In a very disappointing moment instead of having Angoramon evolving into his ultimate form, they instead have Gammamon evolve into Cannonweissmon to weaken Digitamamon and then have Symbaangoramon deliver the killing blow to his former friend (what the hell? I can understand them wanting to space out the evolutions, but this was a stupid decision on their part. This was the perfect moment for Angoramon to show his ultimate form. It was his story, his fight, and his moment and they took it away).
Episode 27 is another quick episode. A Digimon named Splashmon is going around and turning people into water orbs in order to create the perfect beauty serum. When our heroes catch on to what he’s doing, he leads the group around town instilling fear into them to increase the effects of the serum when he catches them. The group finally finds Splashmon on a ship where he uses the ocean to his advantage capturing all the Digimon except Angoramon (don’t tease me we know he’s not getting his ultimate form. You fucked it up last episode). Angoramon evolves and manages to defeat Splashmon when they freeze the water in the digital environment and freeze Splashmon whole. This releases everyone from their watering prison and Blacktailmon arrives to take Splashmon back to the digital world (free of charge). Hiro also gives him a letter to give to his dad (does it say where the hell are you or how do I get to the digital world? I mean we’ve got a lot of questions here that need answering).
Asuramon makes an appearance in episode 28 as the face stealer who goes around stealing faces of humans and turning them into No-Face as a means to better understand expressions. The three-faced Digimon based on Buddha theology manages to steal the faces of Ruli and Kiyoshiro and if something isn’t done soon their bodies will start to grow weak and they’ll die. After finally gaining enough faces, Asuramon materializes into our world and starts to go on a rampage stealing faces (let’s be glad he’s not asking for their clothes). Hiro, Gammamon, and Angoramon track down Asuramon and face him at soccer stadium where even Cannonweissmon has trouble fighting him and loses. Hiro loses his face protecting Gammamon and just when we’re about to get another dark evolution, Angoramon manages to use Hiro’s face to their advantage as Hiro can never say no to anyone. He has Asuramon return all the faces and then invites him to the Digimon gatherings in order to experience all kinds of expressions.
Episode 29 is Kiyoshiro and Jellymon episode. When at the mall a mysterious fog sets in outside the building covering the area and anyone who breathes in the fog get hurt (it’s like that one Stephen King movie. Hopefully it has a better ending). As if that wasn’t bad, a bunch of Kodokugumon are attacking people and poisoning them which should be impossible as they’re non-poisonous (well the research has been greatly exaggerated). Kiyoshiro and Jellymon protect a lost child from the Digimon where Kiyoshiro gets bitten as well and poisons him. However, he fights through the pain and continues to fight and protect the lost child (he’s very brave? What parallel world have we entered?). He figures out that whoever is controlling the Kodokugumon is on the roof of the building and Kiyshiro heads up top to face them. Kiyshiro and Jellymon see that the Digimon responsible for the fog and the Kodokugumon is Toropiamon (the tree monster Digimon with a tropical twist. I’m just imagining a Jamaican accent whenever it speaks). Teslajellymon’s attacks have no effect on it and every time it spits out poison it starts to affect Kiyoshiro. Just when he’s about to collapse from the poison, he gets back up (he is on top of his game today) refusing to give up. This allows Teslajellymon to evolve to her ultimate form, Thetismon (looks like they learned their lesson from the last episodes. (Isis): You’re still mad about that? (Nitsuj): It was stupid!). Thetismon is able to defeat Toropiamon who we find out got separated from its friends and was using the fog to signal them. Its friends show up and it flies off apologizing for the trouble it caused. Thetismon uses her powers to heal everyone who was infected by the poison, the lost girl is reunited with her mom and the day ends on a good note.
We start episode 30 with a girl named Kayono who is destroying clothes in her room out of anger. Her closet door opens and out comes Warumonzaemon and Ex-Tyranomon (you look like the rejected mascots from Five Nights at Freddie’s) who want to be her friends and eliminate anything that annoys her. When her parents come knocking at her door, they turn her dad into a stuffed doll and the mom scared for her life has no choice but to go along with the situation or risk the same fate (I mean what can she do in this situation, ground her?). We find out that Kayono has been out of a school for a month because she doesn’t like her new teacher (who is a nice guy, so I don’t know why she hates him) and is mad that one of her friends hangs out with Ruli who she’s jealous of (okay, this girl is just a straight-up bitch). Kayono goes mad with power and starts turning people into dolls including her teacher (who came to check up on her), a social worker, mom and many more (like I said, bitch). Once Ruli and Hiro find out what’s going on, they head out to face Kayono and her new friends who we find out were just using her to do whatever they wanted. With the help of Monzaemon, Hiro and Cannonweissmon (Ruli and Angoramon got turned into dolls as well. Starting to think the writers hate these two or something) they manage to defeat the terrible duo, return everyone back to normal, and Kayono apologizes for her actions (I don’t care, you’re still a bitch).
Episodes 31-34
Episode 31 focuses on Ruli and Angoramon (oh good, maybe we’ll get to see his ultimate form). An evil sword is going around possessing Digimon (didn’t you tell this story in Digimon 2020?) so that it can cut humans (cut the world while you’re at it). Angoramon gets possessed by the sword and does his best to resist the temptations of the sword, but after having his life sapped away he eventually becomes a slave to the sword. He tries to slice Ruli but Gammamon evolves to save her. Gammamon and Jellymon fight Angoramon where their data gets absorbed and the real owner of the sword, Musyamon, emerges. Angoramon fights against Musyamon where he’s overpowered. Luckily, he receives help from a new Digimon called Zubamon. Musyamon fought Zubamon back in the Digital World and lost, now it wants a rematch. Zubamon transforms into a sword and Angoramon uses it to cut through Musyamon’s sword to free all the captured humans inside and destroy it. With its revenge settled, Zubamon takes its leave and Blacktailmon comes to pick up Musyamon. Still no ultimate evolution for Angoramon (fuck you Toei. It’s official, the team behind this anime hates Ruli and Angoramon).
Episode 32 is a Hiro and Gammamon episode (always a wholesome team to focus on). A bunch of Betsumon show up and begin impersonating everyone to take over their lives (Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Or in this case the Digimon Snatchers). Gammamon gets replaced by Betsumon who has Hiro completely fooled despite the obvious differences and eventually the Betsumon start to take over the dorm impersonating everyone (for what reason I have no idea. They’re like cats, they’re jerks for no apparent reason). Thankfully, Gammamon is able to show Hiro that he’s the real Gammamon and together they manage to defeat the Betsumon (how could you not tell these things were the fakes? They’re hideous). Clockmon shows up saying he’ll take care of (Isis: I can take care of them in a faster way *cocks shotgun*).
In episode 33 we focus on Kiyoshiro who has been hearing voices after surviving a Picklemon attack. They go to Mummymon for help (I keep forgetting that he’s a doctor in this timeline. It’s both amusing and interesting) where he says Kiyoshiro is hearing the voices of a dead Digimon that unexpectedly passed away (wouldn’t be the first time this series had a dead Digimon come back to haunt people). Kiyoshiro continues to panic and gets help from Hiro who walks him back to the dorm. On their way back Kiyoshiro almost gets hit by a car and gets rushed to the hospital after hitting his head on the concrete and passing out. However, his spiritual form is between our world and the afterlife. We find out that the Digimon who’s been calling out to Kiyoshiro is Sepikmon the shaman Digimon who wants to be friends with him. Unfortunately, Sepikmon can only be friends with humans who are dead, so all this time it’s been trying to kill him and drag him to the afterlife. Kiyoshiro is able to contact the others from Limbo (man, the indie game was only 20% accurate). In order to save him, they have to go into Limbo as well and Jellymon volunteers to do it. Using some special medicine, Jellymon enters Limbo (I wonder how low she can go? Had to get that joke out of the way. Let us continue) and stops Sepikmon just in time from crossing over with Kiyoshiro. Jellymon is able to defeat Sepikmon and brings it back to the world of the living to punish it for stealing her darling. After lecturing Sepikmon on how it can’t go around dragging people and Digimon to the afterlife (a conversation you would think didn’t need to be done) they realize that living in the city isn’t the best place for it and have it move to the countryside.
Episode 34 is for the lizard lovers out there. A Digimon has been going around turning kids into gecko humans (and no it’s not like Asui from MHA it’s actually very frightening). Hiro and the others follow the geckos when they go out at night to steal diamond rings (they have expensive taste. Thank you! I’ll see myself out). Even Ruli gets turned into a gecko human (because the producers apparently hate her if these last few episodes have shown). They eventually find out that this was the work of Salamandamon who has been eating the diamonds in order to make her flames more beautiful. Gammamon and Jellymon are able to beat her with Gammamon putting out her flames and making her turn everyone back to normal.
Episodes 35-38
In episode 35 we finally get to see Angoramon evolve into his ultimate evolution, Lamortmon (was it worth the wait? No, but thank you for doing something that should have been done many episodes ago Toei. I know that must have been hard for you to do). I don’t even care about the rest of the episode. Something about a werewolf attacking about and the town willing to sacrifice Ruli in order to please it.
For episode 36 the group along with Ruli’s paranormal friends from the internet explore a cave where people mysteriously disappear. Once they enter the cave the group is taken out one by one until it’s down to Hiro, Gammamon and Jellymon (Angoramon gets no love). They find out that the Digimon involved in all these kidnappings is Gigasmon who has been turning people into stone statues and keeping them underground in a graveyard that he has created. When he came to this world he found out about global warming and panicked (pretty much the opposite of what everyone else does). In order to preserve humanity he decided to turn them into stone and keep them underground for their own safety (well that was nice of him). Hiro and Cannonweissmon defeat him and explain that humans are doing everything in their power to prevent this from happening which feels Gigasmon with hope and he turns everyone back to normal.
Episode 37 is actually a pretty serious episode. While out of town the group comes across a bunch of sludge that’s turning animals, people, and even skeletons into zombies (that alone makes this episode interesting). Before more people can get infected, they lock up the infected and search for the Digimon responsible for this zombie outbreak. They find it in the form Rareraremon that had much of its data destroyed due to multiple trash dumping in the forest. Rareraremon has pretty much lost all of its sense and reasoning (essentially becoming a zombie) and the group decides to put it out of its misery. So for the first time ever the group openly and willingly destroys another Digimon in order to save the town.
In episode 38 Hiro goes off to a neighboring city to participate in a festival hosted by his sister school. While there he gets kidnapped by Doumon who possesses him with the spirits of the Hojo clan (giving us one of the creepiest faces you’ll ever see). Doumon begins kidnapping people and turning them into soldiers for the new Hojo clan to reclaim Japan (viva la Hojo clan!). Gammamon with the help of a new Digimon named Espimon manages to save Hiro and then they defeat Doumon who was also possessed by the spirits of the Hojo clan when he was studying a shrine. He apologizes for everything and turns everyone back to normal.
And that’s the third half of Ghost Game. Still no major villain but we got to see ultimate evolutions and a few more twisted stories. Tune in next week as we continue with part 4. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj MUHAHAHAHAHA!
