(Nitsuj): I’ll deal with that later. We’re in the fourth week of Aniween and continuing to look at Digimon Ghost Game. What horrors will Hiro and the others encounter next? Let’s find out.
Episodes 39-42
Episode 39 sees Hiro come across a Digimon named Gyukimon. Angoramon tells Hiro to get rid of it because it’s one of the most detested and dangerous Digimon. They’re violent creatures who like to battle and if you get poisoned by them you become one of them (that’s scary). The good news is once it came to the real world it devolved into Ryudamon and then into a small version of Gyukimon where it hasn’t been taken over by its violent tendencies. However, Angoramon insists on getting rid of it before it evolves and wreaks havoc. Hiro decides to help it return to Ryudamon, but the situation comes at the worst time as Hiro is going on a summer class trip to an island (seaside school). Not wanting to leave Gyukimon alone, Hiro takes it on the class trip where it, unfortunately, can’t ignore its nature (it’s a scorpion). Gyukimon attacks the students and staff turning them into Gyukimon and then starts to grow (all because Hiro decided to bring it on the trip. Well on the upside they’re on an isolated island where it can’t leave. Could you imagine if this thing got loose in the city?). Ruri and Angoramon arrive, where with the help of Bakumon might have figured out a way to turn it back into Ryudamon. If they can get Gyukimon to remember its Ryudamon they can use their digivices to turn it back into Ryudamon (the question is is Gyukimon so gone does it even remember what Ryudamon looks like?). The group is able to knock some sense into Gyukimon and helps it de-evolve into Ryudamon. They manage to turn everyone back to normal and Hiro learns an important lesson about impulse (don’t help anyone).
We start episode 40 with Hiro’s ipad not working because Gammamon chopped into it. Hiro knows it was Gammamon who did it and wants an apology, but Gammamon refuses to apologize (he’s entering his rebellious phase and Hiro’s not even upset. Spoiled bratmon). Espimon then arrives to return Hiro’s ID card and asks for his help in dealing with a Digimon that’s been going around and bending/twisting objects (you know at this point they might as well just open up a paranormal investigation service). Hiro, Gammamon, Espimon, and Jellymon go to the spot where Espimon’s arm got twisted, the beach. They see a lot of twisted objects and Gammamon befriends a local girl named Rin who’s been investigating as well. Things go from strange to straight up terrifying when people’s animals started getting twisted and bent the next day (ohh~ that is some creepy imagery). We find out that the Digimon behind all of this is Calamaramon (I think I liked her better when she was a self-absorbed narcissist). They fight against her where in a first we see Hiro issue commands to Jellymon (I’ve never seen another tamer issue orders to another tamer’s Digimon. That’s interesting). Unfortunately, her attacks don’t work, but Gammamon shows up apologizing and then beats Calamaramon to return everyone to normal. Espimon leaves only to return at Hiro’s dorm.
In episode 41 the circus is in town and it’s run by Piemon hands down one of the most dangerous and strongest Digimon in the series (like seriously, this guy would fit in perfectly with the SMT universe). Piemon has been kidnapping children at night and turning them into cards. He kidnaps Angoramon and turns him into an actual rabbit leaving only Gammamon to fight (Kiyoshiro is on sabbatical). Instead of beating Piemon with brute force (let’s be honest, they would have lost) they instead challenge him to a card game where if they win he has to turn everyone back to normal. Ruli challenges him (we’re shining the spotlight on her? Is Toei being shut down?). Ruli manages to beat Piemon in his game of cards and returns everyone back to normal. Surprisingly, he’s a good sport about his loss and agrees not to harm any more humans (he’s a Digimon who enjoys the thrill of the game. Whether he wins or loses).
Episode 42 sees the group on the hunt for an Oni that’s been eating people (you sure it’s not a titan?). They find out that the Oni is a group of Oboromon who have been hunting people who don’t have the colors they desire and sending them to a pocket dimension where they merge into a human chain (still not as bad as the Human Centipede). The Oboromon with the longest chain will become their new king. Hiro and Ruli get captured leaving only Kiyoshiro to save the day. The red Oboromon wins and converts everyone into a scarf which sets Gammamon off. He evolves into Gulusgammamon (been a while since we’ve seen him) who easily defeats the red Oboromon to revert everyone back to normal and then attacks the others. Hiro orders him to stop and he complies since Hiro took a step forward instead of cowering away like before.
Episodes 43-48
It’s a Kiyoshiro story in episode 43. Kiyoshiro’s friend from overseas named Emma has come to visit him knowing that he’s got a secret that he’s hiding. Worried about her exposing Digimon to the world, he employs the help of the others to hide them (okay. Just tell them to go away for a couple of hours and you’ll be fine). Emma gets her body infected by a Digimon named Eyesmon who uses her body to spy on others and gather data to become stronger (if that’s not a metaphor for social media then I don’t know what is). Emma tries to hide the eyes all over her body, but Ruli eventually finds out about it and they work out a plan to save her. Covering up all of her eyes, they make Eyesmon appear and fight it where they defeat and capture it. Emma returns to normal and while she’s bummed Kiyoshiro doesn’t have a girlfriend she still had her fun (he does. She’s just lacks the body for fanart). When she goes to kiss him Jellymon stops her saying that Kiyoshiro is her property (shame we won’t see her again. She would have been a perfect fourth member).
Episode 44 calls out all the shopaholics out there. Jellymon has started up a new venture with Antylamons who can make just about anything using spirit energy (giving Amazon a run for their money). The only problem is the material they’re using to make the products is iron and when they start using iron from the dorm problems start to occur. In order to save themselves and the dorm, Jellymon is forced to cancel all the orders one of the students ordered and the Antylamons restore the dorm to stop it from collapsing. Kiyoshiro finds the Antylamons a home in a recycling company (shame. With the right business plan we could have run Amazon out of business).
In episode 45 a Digimon has been posting articles about people and anyone who makes fun of them gets injured. Kiyoshiro almost gets his skull cracked and the next target is a popular idol. The group approaches the idol where she takes a liking to Gammamon and agrees to let the group protect her. After losing in a game show, her punishment is sky-diving (what the hell Japan? Even for a game show that’s too extreme). She gets pushed out of the plane by the Digimon who reveals itself to be Publimon (and you can just tell this is a new Digimon. It totally screams zoomer). Gammamon manages to defeat the Digimon and save the idol in a pretty intense air battle (got to admit that was pretty cool. I don’t see a lot of air battles so this was nice).
Episode 46 is a rather creepy episode with a good set up. Hiro’s friend Kotaro gets bitten by a plant Digimon on the nape of the neck. As a result he keeps hallucinating about being attacked by plants whenever he goes near water. Scared for his life, he refuses to go anywhere near water meaning he doesn’t take a bath for almost two weeks (Good God man, I can’t even go a day without taking a shower. I feel like taking one right now after hearing you). Hiro and the others investigate the community center where Kotaro got bit where they figure out a Digimon is behind this, they just don’t know which one. That night, the bite on Kotaro’s neck begins to bloom and he falls completely under the control of the Digimon. He goes off to some abandoned beauty salon where the group follows after him and get captured by the Digimon who reveals itself to be Oleamon, a self- proclaimed gourmet queen who wants to eat her first human (how does going two weeks without a bath heightened his fragrance?). The group escapes and fights Oleamon where they win and restore Kotaro to his senses. The next day Oleamon is on TV running her own cooking show.
In episode 47 we see the return of a classic Digimon, Nanomon aka Datamon. When a Digimon named Shadramon is about to die and turn back into a digitama, Nanomon comes across it and offers to help it be reborn without losing its memories. Shadramon takes it up on the offer and Nanomon implants its data into a human’s body. The human happens to be a coworker of Kiyoshiro (just how many jobs does this guy have? He has more jobs than most people have in a lifetime) and as the episode goes on we see Shadramon start to be reborn. The only problem is Shadramon’s body fuses with Kiyoshiro’s friend (creating some human-digimon hybrid that you would see in a horror fanfic). With the help of Mummymon the group is able to catch Nanomon, but they don’t know how to separate Shadramon from the human body. Luckily, Thetismon is able to perform a deus ex machina and separate the bodies from each other (since when could she do that? No idea. The series has been known to make up powers on the fly). Shadramon unfortunately returns to a digitama and Blacktailmon arrives to take Nanomon back to the Digital World.
Episode 48 sees Hiro and Ruli at a friend’s DIY wedding (this is an actual thing and is a clear sign that the bride and groom are cheap). While at the wedding hall, Ruli gets asked to be a model for their pamphlet and then mysteriously vanishes after spores latch onto her and mushrooms begin to grow. We find out that multiple brides have gone missing under the same circumstances and we find out that the kidnappers are a bunch of Chablemon who are growing mushrooms on the brides filled with their despair and eating them to get stronger (what the fuck Digimon?). The boys and Jellymon along with a few other Digimon find the Chablemon hideout and fight where everyone gets infected by their spores and starts growing mushrooms on them. When the Chablemon go to eat Kiyoshiro’s mushrooms it’s too spicy for them. Kiyoshiro on the other hand likes them and gives him a power surge which Jellymon uses to get stronger (it honestly did feel like they were hinting toward a mega evolution). Evolving into Thetismon, she manages to defeat the Chablemon and then heals everyone (getting a lot of mileage out of her heal all powers).
Episodes 49-52
It’s the Halloween episode (honestly every episode is a Halloween episode). Witchmon (the female equivalent of Wizardmon) has entered our world and is going around turning young girls into real witches in order to create a continent just for witches with her as the queen. The group fights against her where they receive help from Pumpkinmon who makes a return for the holiday (that reminds me. Hey Baron, are you and Corbin related to Pumpkinmon in some way? (Baron): Oh yeah. Pumpkinmon is actually a distant cousin. He’s very weird though. Total Casanova who gets a million love letters from girls saying how dreamy he is and he’s a vegan. What a dork. (Nitsuj): I’ve never met the guy but I feel like he and I would get along just fine). They continue to fight Witchmon until the clock strikes midnight where she immediately gives up and everyone returns to normal. It turns out her powers are only enhanced on Halloween, but once it’s over she returns to normal.
Episode 50 (congratulations) introduces us to Pucchiemon, a digimon that seems to be obsessed with Hiro’s friend Riku. At first things seem to be going well until it evolves into Meicrackmon (well there’s a face I didn’t think I would see again) and for everything it does for Riku it demands the same in return. When Riku can’t do the same things Meicrackmon begins to tally them up and finally decides to turn him into a Digimon as well. This of course leads to a fight where the boys defeat it and explain that humans and Digimon are different and can’t do the things it can. This manages to calm Meicrackmon down and she goes to see Riku where she dumps him and leaves (that was a strange romance).
Pretty chilling story in episode 51. It starts with Blacktailmon delivering a package to Hiro which contains a gift from his dad. The gift is new program chips which will boost the signals on digivices (what will that do? We’ll find out later). A Dullahan has appeared and is going around searching for its head. It attacks other students taking their souls and turning them into Dullahans as well (this actually does sound like a good set up for a movie). After some investigation, Hiro finds out all the students who were attacked were members of the history club at his school. It turns out their teacher recovered an ancient helmet and that helmet happens to be head of Darkknightmon a very powerful Digimon that will do anything to achieve its goal (and turn people into Dullahans for some odd reason). Hiro returns the helmet in exchange for Darkknightmon returning everyone back to normal and it complies. Once Darkknightmon gets its helmet back and sees how it was mistreated all this time it goes on a rampage (if it’s any consolation, your helmet fetched a pretty high price at the auction). Gammamon and Angoramon get defeated but Gammamon gets back and warps evolve to Cannonweissmon thanks to the new program chips (he can go straight to ultimate now? Cool). Cannonweissmon is able to make Darkknightmon yield defeat and it takes its leave.
Nothing much to say about episode 52. It’s a Ruli episode. Ruli drags the group to a lake to go kappa hunting (careful, they’ll reach up your anus and rip your soul out). Instead of finding kappas they find the next best thing, Gawappamon, kappa like Digimon who have been protecting humans stupid enough to go to the lake at night from their boss, Shaujinmon. Due to a recent factory leaking chemicals into the water, Shaujinmon has become corrupted and now seeks to eat human livers. This leads to the group fighting against Shaujinmon where it actually beats Cannoweissmon (what sorcery is this?) but falls to bear Lamortmon who was going to slice its heart out for hurting Ruli. This managed to deoxidized Shaujinmon who returns to normal and moves the group to the mountains so nothing like this never happens. Hiro is also starting to think that their world might not be a good fit for Digimon.
