Project #85: Demon King Daimao

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Well guys it’s August you know what that means. . .I just made up a new arc. Welcome to the Demon Lord Arc. Throughout the month of August I’ll be taking a look at animes that focus on the demon lord a central part in anime and video games in general but what happens when the choice of being a demon lord isn’t something you wish for but it falls upon you? You get the anime Demon King Daimao. Demon King Daimao is an anime that centers around a young high school boy who finds out he’s going to be the next Demon Lord and his desire to use his powers for the good of the world and his school. The anime was produced by the anime studio Artland (Katekyō Hitman Reborn!) in 2010 and is based off a light novel under the same name written by Shotaro Mizuki. Let’s start the Demon Lord arc on a funny note and take a look at Demon King Daimao. Also, I’ll do some voice comparisons since I’ve watched both the English and Japanese version of the show.

Opening and Ending theme

The opening for this anime is “REALOVE:REALIFE” by Sphere. I found the song to be good but not because of the singing, I found the singing decent but because of the cool instrumental that went with the opening. The instrumental is upbeat, fast, and catchy getting pumped and excited for the anime. The ending is “Everyday sunshine line!” by Natsuko Aso. Once again we get a catchy upbeat song with a great instrumental and Natsuko also sounds good here. At first I wasn’t behind this song because it was upbeat and didn’t think it worked as an ending but after a few episodes I found it pleasing to listen to after watching an episode.

Episodes 1-4

The anime starts off on a stormy night where a lady is leaving her child at the front door of a cathedral (well I guess it’s better than throwing him in the dumpster like some prom night dumpster baby). We fast forward years later where the baby Akuto is all grown up and getting transfer to a new high school (boy time flies. It only seems like 3 seconds ago I was watching your mother leave on the doorstep of the cathedral). He’s voiced by Takashi Kondo (Subaru from Diabolik Lovers) in Japan and Chris Patton (Keima from TWGOK) in America. Personally I think Takashi is better for this role. Why? Because the guy is essentially having fun with the role. In the anime Akuto gets constantly put into misunderstanding situations and does his best to explain with everyone doubting him. Takashi puts a lot of energy into making Akuto sound innocent and funny throughout the anime. Chris just sounds out of place with this character like he’s not entirely sure what to do with this role. There are times when he’ll sound good and have fun with the role but for the most part it sounds like he’s unsure how he should voice Akuto. As Akuto is walking through the train station he helps an elderly lady who’s dropped her luggage and her granddaughter a blue-haired girl accuses him of being a predator (hey some guys older women) and attacks him. This girl is our first of four female leads Junko a ninja who’s going to the same magic school as Akuto and has a strong sense of justice. She’s voiced by Yōko Hikasa (Rias from Highschool DxD) and Luci Christian (Nami from One Piece). Tough call here but I have to go with Yōko because she makes Junko sound ninja-like and like a serious person determined to let justice prevail over evil. Luci’s good too but she makes Junko sound too much like an average high school girl which isn’t a bad thing if Junko was an average high school girl but she’s not. The two quickly become friends with Akuto telling her that his dream is to become a high priest and change the world (*laugh* bad news for you kid). They reach the academy where this spiritual crow called the Yatagarasu (which I call bullshit because the crow has two legs the Yatagarasu is said to have 3 legs. If you’re gonna bring Japanese mythology into your anime do it right) is analyzing the students and telling them what their future occupation will be (yes, they are letting a bird decide the future of students. This is even more ridiculous then letting the talking hat from Harry Potter decide which school dorm you’re gonna be it). Akuto approaches the crow hoping to get high priest but instead the crow tells him he’s destined to be the demon lord (well he said he wanted to change the world he just never said for good or evil). Naturally everyone hears this and quickly turn on him including Junko who thinks that Akuto was lying to her about being the next demon lord and was just playing with her (yeah you’ll quickly notice that Junko’s motto is act first and ask question later. Gets kinda annoying but luckily it’s around for the first episodes). His homeroom teacher tells him to be careful on account of everyone will most likely try to kill him now but she assures him that it’s okay because if he does die she’ll resurrect him as a zombie to study and analyze him (well that’s pleasant news). In class one student named Hiroshi who isn’t afraid of Akuto nominates him for class rep but Akuto rejects saying he rather be on cleaning duty and give the class rep position to someone more responsible and popular (good idea). But this plan bites him in the ass as the person in charge of cleaning duty is the person who goes around destroying and beating up anyone who gets in their path to protect school secrets (well. . .fancy that). Junko no longer being able to stand the humiliation of being embarrassed by Akuto challenges him to a duel where he unknowingly awakens his demon powers and destroys the entire classroom (not bad for a first day of school). Later that night with the help of Hiroshi (who considers himself an underling of Akuto now), Akuto goes to the girl’s dormitory in the hopes of finding Junko and sorting this misunderstanding out (let it go. Trust me the more a man tries to explain something the more he gets himself in trouble) but when he goes to see her she’s in the middle of changing and this results in a chase with Junko trying to kill him (see, more trouble). He runs into a bamboo forest where he meets girl number two Kena a nonsensical red-haired girl who has a deep love for rice and believes all the problems in the world can be solved with it. She’s voiced by Aki Toyosaki (Momo from To Love Ru) and Melissa Davis (Lady from Devil May Cry). Here’s another tough choice because they both do a good job at capturing that nonsensical lovable character but if I had to choose I go with Melissa her voice just sounds so cute here. Kena decides to protect Akuto saying that he’s precious to her which angers Junko (jealous much?) and does a shadow clone jutsu to distract Kena and attack Akuto but he activates his demon powers once again and creates a huge explosion that leaves a big crater and knocking Junko out again while she’s naked to end the episode.

We start episode 2 where episode 1 left off. After the big explosion the third female lead shows up named Korone an advanced green-haired android known as a Liladan sent by the government to keep an eye on Akuto. While she’s usually emotionless she does show human characteristics mostly consisting of teasing Akuto. She’s voiced Aoi Yūki (Mio from TWGOK Season 1) and Maggie Flecknoe (Saya from H.O.T.D). I’m gonna go with a draw on this one I normally don’t that but both Aoi and Maggie do a great job voicing this character. They both make Korone sound emotionless but when it comes to picking on Akuto they bring this character to life. Korone heals Junko and she runs away crying out of embarrassment (there’s nothing to be ashamed about you have a nice body) and so does Kena who has the ability to turn invisible and hide her presence from everyone except for her hairpin in the shape of a bird. The next day in school we meet Fujiko a second year purple-haired girl in charge of the girl’s dorm, our final heroine, and whose boobs are built for motorboating. She’s voiced by Shizuka Itō (Akeno from Highschool DxD) and Shelley Calene-Black. Victory goes to Shizuka because my God she just sounds sexy and perfect for this character. Shelly’s good to but you can’t outclass Shizuka when it comes to sexy voices. Anyway, unlike everyone who’s scared shitless of Akuto, Fujiko is the only who approaches him baring no ill-will or hatred and tells Akuto that if he ever needs her help all he has to do is call her (she’s obviously evil all the signs are there). Akuto wants to arrange a meeting with Junko so he ask Fujiko if she could help him which she’s more than happy to do and they set up a time to meet each other in the mountains behind the school to discuss their plans and she also tell Akuto that he can turn off Korone if he pulls her tail (for a guy who says he’s not trying to be evil he sure is doing a lot of evil things). In the mountains they get attacked by a demon dog and Korone is about to kill it (don’t. PETA will make a horrible disturbing online video game that falsifies your anime in an attempt to spread their message about animal abuse) but Akuto steps in and instead of killing the dog he instead absorbs the dog’s demonic mana and returns it to a sweet innocent puppy. When Korone has her back turned Akuto is able to grab her rabbit tail and turn her off (surprisingly her emotionless body now matches her emotionless character trait) and this allows Fujiko to come and give Akuto a gun and magic medicine that will allow him to let Junko understand his feelings and she takes her leave. He reactivates Korone and notices that Kena is in the mountains as well running around naked while invisible (so is this a thing she does regularly or something?). He chases her noticing the bird hairpin which reminds him briefly of his childhood and how when he was little he gave a girl his age the same hairpin so it’s likely these two are childhood friends. He catches her but falls on her naked which makes Korone think he tried to rape her (that’s a good assumption given the situation) but Kena disproves this claim clearing up Akuto’s good name (not that there’s anything good about in the eyes of the other characters) and as payment she asks Akuto to be her friend. At the end we see that Fujiko is actually evil (called it) and tells a lie to get Junko to go and face Akuto so that she can make Akuto her servant. Also to increase her creepy factor she keeps the head of her dead older brother in a jar that actually speaks to her because he’s a ghost now (and with this I am both sexually drawn to her and freaked out by her. Sreaked so to speak).

We start episode 3 off by finding out the reason men are so concern with their penis sizes. After that Fujiko arranges a meeting between Junko and Akuto in the hopes that Akuto will use her medicine which will make him fall in love with Fujiko and remain loyal to her (any chance I can borrow that medicine?). Akuto once again turns off Korone and goes to the meeting spot but it turns out to be an ambush by students from the underground ordered by Fujiko to attack Akuto. He quickly beats them in flawless style (//youtu.be/FfvTXACPv30?t=4s) just as Junko comes in and mistakes it as Akuto picking on good students (let’s try hearing his side of the story first samurai girl). The next day at school Junko calls Akuto out for punitive justice a school rule that gives students permission to attack the student called out for punitive justice for 1 hour (it’s like the Purge only shorter, less scary, but still violent). The hour of punitive (Purge) justice begins where they corner Akuto and just before Junko can deliver the final blow Kena comes in telling Junko this fight is pointless and that deep down she loves Akuto (obviously she’s trying to kill him). Everyone hears this and get the idea that they just got caught up in their lovers quarrel so they turn on Junko and are about to attack her along with Akuto but Korone fires a cannon that let’s it rain rice calming everyone down (needs more salt). In the end we find out that Kena took the medicine Fujiko gave to Akuto and mixed it with the rice. As a result of this all the girls in the dorm fall for Fujiko and we have a little lesbian orgy going down in Fujiko’s room (awesome~, rice makes girls horny). Also, Akuto joins the discipline committee and meets Lily the student council president who you can technically count as the 5th heroine in this series. While she doesn’t get as much screen time as the other girls she is one of the people responsible for keeping the government off Akuto’s back and does develop feelings for Akuto like the other girls.

In episode 4 Akuto goes off to the meditation chamber to do some meditation in the hopes of being able to better control his mana but Korone and Kena tag along distracting him (nonsense he’ll just be meditating on something else while in the chamber). While inside they find a map and get rescued by Fujiko who recognizes the map as the work of her brother (his penmanship is terrible). The next day Kena makes copies of the map around the school and spreads the rumor that it’s a treasure map encouraging students to try in find it but everyone who goes searching for it come back severely injured saying they were attacked by a monster. Rumor starts spreading that Akuto made the map up in an attempt to find underlings (wanted. Underlings to serve the demon lord. You must be this stupid to follow and believe this treasure map in order to join). Akuto outright rejects these claims but nobody believes him so a student named Eiko forces him to check it out along with her, Korone, and Hiroshi.

Episodes 5-8

In episode 5 Akuto along with the gang goes to the first stop on the map which is a crypt that takes them to an underground city and they find some old messages and items that belonged to Fujiko’s deceased older brother who we found out in earlier episodes was killed for failing a mission in the past which led Fujiko down the dark path (all because of the death of your older brother? Okay, I’m just saying it, Fujiko has a brother complex. The signs are all there). In his messages he tells them to find a shrine which will have a key that will lead them to the treasure they’re looking for (also here’s a good recipe for curry). While in the crypt the group keeps getting attacked by strange creatures and it gets revealed by Junko who fell into the crypt herself that Eiko is really a spy of the government and her eternal rival (both in love and in the way of the sword). After Akuto saves Junko from a werewolf instead of Eiko (well you are spying on him) she gets mad and throws the stone key they’ve been looking for at Akuto and takes her leave (//youtu.be/7oH5Qc2zTrs?t=6s). Kena and Fujiko show up and Fujiko activates the key which teleports them to the lowest level of the crypt where Lily shows up and we see that the monsters who attacked them were actually members of the student council. A vampire, a robot, and a werewolf (geez just get a few more monsters and we can start the Monster Mash). Lily reveals that this level contains the greatest relic left by the previous Demon Lord and she’s been watching over it all this time. Fujiko wants to know what it is as well as figure the truth behind her brother’s death so she sneaks pass Lily and the council members and reawakens the relic which turns out to be a dragon (oh does it grant wishes?). The dragon seeks a new master and attacks Fujiko where it gets revealed that her brother didn’t fail his mission he was killed in his mission by someone who tricked him into believing that he was destroying the Demon Lord’s relics. After this flashback Akuto fights his way past Lily (who can deliver some pretty devastating punches) and trades punches with the dragon taming it (that’s right he literally went up to a dragon and punched it out like he was Mike Tyson. That might just go down as one of the most badass moments in anime). The dragon reveals its name to be Peterhausen and that he is now the loyal servant of Akuto the next demon lord. As a reward for his victory Fujiko becomes his loyal follower and he receives a kiss from Lily (that’s the reward for punching out a dragon. Girls just fall for you like cats fall for catnip).

Korone starts to act weirder than ever in episode 6. It turns out her superiors have ordered her to seduce Akuto in an attempt to control him with women (as wrong and degrading as this is to female it’s actually a plan that’s worked multiple times in the past). So she begins acting who shades of crazy on us in her attempt to seduce Akuto and get him to sleep with her. While that’s going on Akuto’s class goes on a seaside school trip where we get to see girls in bikinis and sea cucumbers blow their loud. After that we find out that the island they’re on is actually Hiroshi’s home island and he tells them the story that when the demon lord has return a monster will awaken to destroy the island and a hero will come to slay the beast as well as the demon lord. Naturally Akuto doesn’t believe this story (he should it concerns his livelihood) but he starts to sense someone or something watching him from the shadows (I always feel like somebody’s watching me~). That night he goes out to investigate with Korone where Akuto runs into a drunk Kena and they share a moment where he’s about to kiss her (hey baby, you got a little rice on your lips) but Korone shows back up and kicks him in the back (cockblocking bitch. You said you wanted to control him with women well that plan is starting to come to fruition) and she gets shot from behind to end the episode.

At the start of episode 7 we find out that Hiroshi is destined to be a hero and the one to defeat the demon lord in the future (well this complicates the whole boss and underling relationship going on between the two. This is like dating your boss’ ex-wife and he finds out about it). But here’s where it gets confusing with him. He wants to be a hero but at the same time he doesn’t want the responsibilities that come with being a hero. That makes no sense. Whether you have super powers or a position of power you will always have a responsibility to use that power for the betterment of the world. We’ve seen this in comics, movies, video games, and any other form of media in the world that a hero or a character with some form of power always has a responsibility to carry out with that power. Anyway, after Korone gets shot she gets back up and heads back to her headquarters believing she failed in her mission to seduce Akuto. The next day Hiroshi’s sister Yukiko confronts Akuto and ask him if he’s the demon lord because in her eyes her brother is a hero (you need glasses honey) but like an insensitive dumbass he denies these claims and tells her that Hiroshi doesn’t want to be a hero when really he does (Akuto all I have is this to say to you: //youtu.be/ZS1J3VrxnM0, it cased you missed it I think Akuto’s a dumbass). After Hiroshi runs off to the lake looking for Yukiko with Kena they spot a mysterious pervert named Mr. X (low on creativity here huh guys) who works for this organization known as CIM08 and awakens the sea monster in the lake which happens to be a giant sea cucumber (too easy, next). He grabs Yukiko because she saw the whole thing (and is no doubt traumatize by the whole giant premature ejaculating sea cucumber) and is about to kill her but Hiroshi tries to stop him only to fail because the cucumber absorbs mana leaving him powerless and he gets thrown into the lake to drown while Kena gets captured. We then cut to night where Akuto takes on Mr. X but can’t control his mana because Mr. X uses sound magic to disrupt Akuto’s concentration (no doubt Mr. X is using 1-D and Bieber music that’ll throw off anybody’s concentration). Back in the lake Hiroshi decides to accept his role as hero and swims to the shrine below the lake (//youtu.be/qxqm6htwcwk) don’t worry there’s a series of caves down there that connect the lake to the sea (//youtu.be/59GwT_Qlj0Y). He pulls out the sword of heroes (ripping off the sword and the stone) and it turns into a bracelet transforming Hiroshi into the hero known as Brave (and getting one of the most ridiculous and blandest hero costumes I’ve ever seen, scene here. He looks like the Blue Falcon trying to cosplay as Iron Man). Back on land Akuto still struggles to beat Mr. X but Korone shows back up and takes him down and Brave shows up to destroy the cucumber (oh come on man let him finish) and keeping his identity a secret from Akuto and the others.

Not much happens in episode 8. While Akuto tries to get Kena to start going to class because she’s been skipping out on them Fujiko tries to hatch a monster egg for him in the hopes that it’ll put her in his good graces. Kena steals the egg and gives it to Akuto where it hatches into a giant 2-headed rooster (I call it Roosterus) and it gets destroyed by Hiroshi disguised as Brave. We do learn one important fact in this episode. In this world God is a super computer who analyzes the mana flows of people and those who have better mana flow get pick as His favorite and receive His blessings (well ain’t this a bitch).

Episodes 9-12 and Specials

In episode 9 Korone talks Junko into taking Akuto to meet her father for a marriage meeting. Akuto agrees to go completely misunderstanding the situation like the idiot he is but the day before he leaves he meets Boichiro Yamato the leader of CIM08 who’s talking to the principle about the growing number of monster attacks in the world and how Akuto’s mana is responsible for these events happening (oh sure everybody blames the demon lord for everything going wrong in the world. Stock market crashing? Demon lord. I cheated on my wife. Demon lord made me do it. Michael Bay makes a movie that sexualizes women, has a story that makes no sense and betrays the source material as well as piss all over your childhood. Well that’s just a bad director’s fault). The next day he goes to Junko’s home village way out in the country (peaceful) where we meet her younger sister Yuko who is actually a popular idol that Hiroshi has a crush on and has the ability to sense demon beast because when she was younger a demon beast attacked her and injected it’s mana into her. Akuto goes to meet Junko’s father where through them misunderstanding each other he gives his blessings to Akuto and Junko and the whole family celebrates that night (congratulations sir you’re the father-in-law of the future demon lord and the father of the next demon queen). Later that night Junko goes to Akuto’s room (save it for marriage) where it gets revealed why Akuto was bought to the village and getting a full understanding of situation and somewhat breaking the engagement with Junko which causes her to cry a little (aha so she wants to be Mrs. Demon lord) and the ninjas in her clan attack Akuto for it (you guys were hiding in his room? Good God you guys were hoping they would do it so you could get a show). They chase him and he gets saved by Eiko who tells him that God (aka the system known as God) has decided that Kena is too dangerous and has ordered Eiko’s clan to eliminate her (really? This super computer that has the whole world on its knees bowing to it is afraid of the rice-loving airhead girl!? There are monsters rampaging around the world all because of the returning demon lord who has a dragon beneath the school and instead of seeing him as a threat and ordering his elimination you instead go for the innocent rice girl. Your priorities are a bitch). Naturally Akuto wants to go back to the school and save her but Korone won’t let him since she’s under orders to stop him but she bear hugs him allowing Akuto to pull her tail and shut her off allowing him to go to the school where Kena has just been saved by Boichiro Yamato (uhh you can’t be the good guy. Akuto’s the good guy right). Boichiro reveals to us that Kena is the “Principle of identity” who has the powers to become the vessel for God in the world and the only reason he saved her is because he wants to use that power his own (there’s are villain). Of course Akuto isn’t gonna let that happen so he prepares to fight him but it’s clear that Boichiro out powers him. Luckily, Fujiko comes in with a whole hoard of demon beast allowing Akuto to grab Kena and retreat to the school grounds.

In episode 10 Fujiko gets Akuto and Kena away from Boichiro and he gets stopped by the principal who in all honesty is an old man jacked on mana steroids. The school grounds become overrun with demon beast and Junko’s family along with Eiko’s family are called in to handle the situation. Eiko kills her father to become the new leader of her clan and gets approached by V2 another member of CIM08 to help her out and put her in charge of the fight against Akuto’s army of beasts. Eiko sends Junko and Yuko into the school on a suicide mission to survey the situation, find the device controlling the beasts and hoping that Junko falls in battle so she can steal Junko’s family sword (geez lady you are just a mean bitch aren’t you) and Akuto finally accepts his position as demon lord and vows to the destroy the whole god system in order to save Kena (anybody else getting a whole FF10 or FF13 vibe here). He and Peterhausen take to the skies where they fight against Brave and then this air battleship which gets taken over by V2 who runs the ship into Akuto and Peterhausen squashing them both (wow if Akuto goes down from that this will be the shortest reign of a demon lord ever).

Episode 11 focuses on Akuto’s harem. First off Kena gets captured by Boichiro and taken away leaving Fujiko to fight off another CIM08 agent known as Rubber who is a masochist. The vampire member of the student council shows to help her fight off the masochist and with their combine power they’re able to beat him. Back on the battlefield Lili tells everyone that Eiko killed her own father so Eiko orders everyone to kill her but they have no luck since Lili has some devastating attacks thanks to fact that she ate the gomu gomu fruit from One Piece. Along with the werewolf and robot girls from the student council they manage to make their way to Eiko and beat V2 forcing him to retreat. Akuto survives the battleship thanks to the help of the principal and lifting the damn thing by himself (beastly). Junko confronts Eiko and is able to draw her family’s sword where she’s about to kill her but Korone shows up to stop her and reveals that Eiko’s father is still alive and everything shocking her deeply (go to your room little lady. You are grounded). Akuto finds out what happen to Kena and flies off with Peterhausen to go save her but first he must fight against Hiroshi who has teamed up with Boichiro because he holds the key to saving Yuko from her demon beast curse.

In the final episode Akuto takes down Hiroshi easily and gives him to Yuko to look after (feed him 3 times a day and if he tries to attack you in your sleep that means he likes you). After that Boichiro makes it to the shrine of God and tries to establish a contract with the Principle of Identity and we find out that he’s lived for over 100 years and has been doing all of this to be with the one woman he loves who through unexplained reasons left him to be with the demon lord before Akuto (man I know girls love the bad boys but still the guy tried to destroy world) and whose spirit now resides within Kena’s body (like I said never explained and really comes out of nowhere). Akuto shows up to face him where he uses his mana to create a clone of himself to trick Boichiro and knock him out from behind and finally find out the truth about the demon lord. He was a tool designed by God to make a contract with Kena and destroy humanity should the time ever arrive. Akuto refuses to go along with God’s plan and says he’s going to destroy this system once and for all so the shrine guardians activate the defense system. Akuto and Peterhausen fly into the shrine of God (secretly followed by Kena) where Peterhausen begins to fuse with the system (again never really explained all that well) while Akuto protects him. Peterhausen finally gets complete control of the system and gives a tooth to Kena (boy I bet the tooth fairy will pay a lot for that) and dies becoming the new system in place of the old system. Akuto and Kena awaken back on the ground where they reunite with everyone, the demon beast mana of Yuko is gone, and we see that everyone’s mind has been altered except for the main cast’s mind. This means everyone has completely forgotten that Akuto is the demon lord and is free to start a new life at school without prejudice against him right? Fuck no. He goes in for a physical where the Yatagaratsu declares him a demon lord once again (haha! Even when he alters the world and everyone in it by destroying God he is fated to be the demon lord).

There are 6 specials that came out after the season, they’re only shorts I say about 3 minutes and just feature a few day to day activities that happen in the anime like Junko and Fujiko in a swimming contest getting out of control, Junko’s love letter getting stolen by Eiko, trouble in the cafeteria, Korone filling out a report about Akuto, getting caught in snowstorm and having to curl up with each other to stay warm, and my favorite the last one which features Fujiko giving the student council some cookies that send them into heat and they attack Akuto but then later on Junko and Kena get the cookies as well and attack Akuto in his dorm room. I liked these specials they were funny, had a good story in each, and was full of fanservice. I say give them a watch after watching the anime.

Final Thoughts

Demon King Daimao is an okay anime. While the setup is good, a high school kid finding out he’s destined to be the next demon lord but tries his best to do good rather than evil the show hits a few bumps and dilemmas along the way. Akuto’s an alright character, I like how he knows he’s destined to be the demon lord but it doesn’t stop him from being who he is and doing what he believes is right even if that means the whole world becomes his enemy. However, his character does follow into that bland male lead personality with him being dense and not recognizing the feelings of the girls around him. Speaking of girls I like how each of them are different from the other and have a different relationship with Akuto. Junko is a follower of justice who isn’t too sure about her feelings so she gets shy a lot around Akuto and often misunderstands him. Kena has more of a little sister/big brother relationship with Akuto, that being Akuto is always looking out for her and she’s always looking out for him in her own little way. Fujiko is the evil seductress nothing more to her. Korone the funny robot who begins to develop feelings for her target and finally Lily is that mysterious girl who loves Akuto but picks her times to attack throwing Akuto off his game.

While the characters for the most part are good it’s the story that drags the anime down. The anime isn’t really sure what it wants to be about. The first episodes start off good and well like a typical magical high school setting but then when we finally reach the last 2 or 3 episodes and it’s an all-out war between good and evil, a girl being the vessel for God, a man living for over 100 years, and finally a dragon becoming the new system that is God and recreating the world. It just gets confusing, seems rushed, and comes out of nowhere without fully explaining everything and just adding it in at the last second hoping the audience won’t ask questions and just go with the flow. No, that’s not how it works. You have to explain the situation and it has to make sense. You can’t just put something in at the last minute hoping to fill in the mistakes you made, it only makes your mistakes more obvious.

The animation is alright, nothing really special but it is vivid and good on the eyes. Music isn’t that impactful, the only songs I remember hearing was the main theme of the show along with the main themes of the characters. Other than that nothing else. If you decide to watch the anime I say watch the Japanese version over the English version. The Japanese version has an A list tier of voice actors in the anime who are all well-known and popular so you won’t be disappointed with the voices. The English version is decent, they too have some popular voice actors but in the end I prefer the Japanese voices over the English voices.

Final Score

Demon King Daimao earns a 6/10. It’s a decent anime with funny scenes, good fanservice, characters and setup to keep you entertained but the story begins to really fall apart near the end of anime so just brace yourself for that when you go to watch it. The series could have benefitted better if the story was broken into 2 seasons with the first season following Akuto and him understanding his powers, developing relationships, and coming to terms with what he’ll become in the future; and the second season escalating into the war and showing us just who Kena really is and stuff. But such is the case for animes that get only one season and have a lot to show and talk about. Thanks for reading, the Demon Lord arc continues next time on Project Nitsuj.
