Thoughts on the Genshin Impact Controversy

Hello guys. This is Justin and welcome to the Otaku Mind. Okay, this one is going to be a quick one as we’ll be talking about a game set to come out in the near future, Genshin Impact. Genshin Impact is the latest game to be created by the Chinese company miHoYo who mostly deal in mobile games. If you play Honkai Impact 3rd on your phone, these are the guys to thank for that. Genshin Impact is going to be an open world action/adventure game set in this fantasy world where you’ll have the option to play as a number of playable characters, explore the world how you see fit, and enjoy a story with an in-depth combat system. Originally this game wasn’t on my radar until Sony announced that the game would be coming to the PS4 in 2020. The trailer appeared in my Youtube feed and I decided to check it out. To the game’s credit it looked awesome. The graphics looked beautiful, the characters are cute girls who are knights, and the combat was smooth and flowed nicely. This looked like a very promising game. However, the one thing that really got me interested in this game was the controversy surrounding it. Yep, apparently this game has angered the Zelda fans, particularly those who have played Breath of the Wild. Genshin Impact bares a striking resemblance to the world in Breath of the Wild and fans of the game have been very vocal about it to the point that one fan went to a gaming expo in China, pulled out a PS4, and smashed it in front of everyone.

*Laughs* I’m sorry, but this was a dumb move on this guy’s part. Not only did he just waste money smashing a perfectly good PS4 but he just gave this game free publicity. This whole stunt had the opposite effect of what he wanted to do. He just gave this game free marketing and helped expand everyone’s interest in this game. Hell, I wasn’t even interested in the game until I heard about this controversy and now I’m totally gonna check this game out in 2020 not because of the controversy, but because it actually does look like a good game. Now, I’m not gonna be ignorant and say that I don’t see the similarities between these two games because it’s there. Yes, the game does look similar to Breath of the Wild and draws a heavy influence from it, but at the same time it’s still different. It doesn’t follow the same mythology as Breath of the World, has its own story, characters, monsters, etc. Yes, the worlds are similar but it’s what they do with their worlds that separates them from each other. Plus, if a game is making you think of one of the greatest games to come out in recent years than shouldn’t you be happy? Finally, if people are rioting about this game than we should be rioting about Breath of the Wild too. Breath of the Wild was heavily inspired by a lot of western RPGs such as Far Cry, Witcher 3, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Even the sequel to Breath of the Wild is drawing heavy inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2. While it’s true Breath of the Wild was primarily inspired by the original Zelda game on the NES you can’t deny the influence and similarities the game has with other western RPGs. In closing, get over it. If you feel insulted that this game rip-offs Breath of the Wild than don’t play it. Replay Breath of the Wild or wait for the sequel to come out. If you try to force your opinion on others you’ll wind up doing something stupid and hurting your cause instead of helping your cause. Case in point, PS4 smasher guy. As for me, I’m gonna check this game out because it looks fun and after reading the comments from beta testers who say this game is legit, I’m very excited to pick it up. Will it be better than Breath of the Wild? I highly doubt it. Well, that’s all I got to say.
