Project #560: Re:Zero S2 Part 1

(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome my ghouls and ghoulettes. It’s October which means it’s time for Aniween and I won’t be doing it alone this year.

(Seras): Correct. Hello everyone. Seras here. It’s been so long. October is the month of my birthday so you get me throughout the whole month of October. It’s going to be sadistic fun for everyone.

(Nitsuj): Let’s start the month off by taking a look at Re:Zero S2. Re:Zero was a big hit. It was everywhere. When the first season came out it was all anyone talked about in the community. Just like Konosuba it showed a new and unique side to isekai we didn’t know possible.

(Seras): Konosuba showed us that isekai didn’t have to be taken seriously all the time. They can be funny, light-hearted and make fun of all the scenarios and tropes you see in isekai. Re:Zero showed us that isekai can be dark, violent, and downright cruel at times. It left an impact on everyone who watched it and when the second season came out in 2020 it was enough to make anyone cheer up from how bad that year was.

(Nitsuj): Done once again by White Fox the season would be split into two parts. The first coming out in 2020 and the second half coming out in 2021. Once again following that new production schedule, some studios are adopting now with their anime.

(Seras): Did this season live up to the hype and continue the legacy of the anime? Let’s find out. This is Re:Zero S2.

Opening and Ending Theme

(Nitsuj): The first opening is “Realize” by Konomi Suzuki. A great and brutal song that perfectly captures the inner struggle and journey Subaru has undergone so far in the story. It holds nothing back in letting you know that the struggles will continue and get more painful. Konomi’s voice sounds great and I love the guitar in this song.

(Seras): For the ending we have “Memento” by Nonoc. This ending is alright. It’s not a bad song and it matches up great with the visuals but I didn’t really get into the song. It just goes too slow for my taste. Like I said, the visuals are great and focuses on the female cast and how they’re all lost and suffering mentally.

Episodes 1-4

(Nitsuj): So the anime starts off where we left off last season. Subaru, Emilia, and the others are heading toward the capital to rejoin everyone else. Along the way Subaru tells Emilia that Rem confessed to him (Seras: And you turned her down like a jackass), but to his shock Emilia says she doesn’t know who Rem is (it’s happening again). We then see Rem and Crusch’s team get attacked by two archbishops from the Witch’s Cult. The first is Lye representing gluttony and the second is Regulus representing greed (scene here: https://youtu.be/tQb7rHcQDQM, well they’re not as crazy as Chris so that’s an improvement. (Seras): Well Regulus isn’t. We might need to keep an eye on Lye). Crusch’s loses an arm and Rem tries to fight both of them herself but ultimately loses (scene here: https://youtu.be/E_51cahT1NY). When Subaru and the others arrive in the capital, they see the damage caused by the archbishops. Subaru finds Rem’s body where she’s gone into a coma and according to the healers she can’t be saved (I want a second opinion). Subaru kills himself hoping to return to his save point from last season, but it just takes him back to the wagon ride with Emilia meaning saving Rem is impossible (Seras: Well on the plus side he has a new save point). Puck arrives and tells Subaru that Rem got her name and memories eaten by Lye putting her in a coma state and causing everyone to forget about her except Subaru (because love, I guess) and Puck (because potatoes). We also see Crusch lost all of her memories but remains conscious as she didn’t lose her name (Seras: At least she got her arm back). Felis tries to disband the alliance as he doesn’t want any more harm to come to Crush, not to mention the Witch’s Cult seems fixated on getting Emilia so that puts everyone’s life in danger. Crusch and Wilbert say no to the disbandment and they all decide to work together to get back what was stolen from them.

For episode 2 Subaru, Emilia, and the rest of the villagers return to the village with Rem. Once they arrive in the village, they see that the villagers who went into hiding are nowhere to be found (Seras: It’s like the opening of a Stephen King book). Subaru and Emilia return to the mansion where they meet Frederica a half-human half-beast girl who was once a maid in service of Roswaal but left due to personal reasons (heat season most likely. Scene here: https://youtu.be/ft0XJyHCT8o). She’s now back and even she doesn’t know where Roswaal, Ram or the others are at but she thinks they might be in the Sanctuary. Subaru also goes to meet Beatrice where he tells her about his run with Chris and the Witch’s Cult. It actually gets hinted that she has some connection to the Witch’s Cult but refuses to say anything. She kicks Subaru out of her library and tells him that the Sanctuary holds the answers he seeks. Frederica can take them to the Sanctuary but she’ll need two days to prepare for it and won’t be going with them. She tells them the location and warns them to be wary of the one called Garfiel (he has an insatiable appetite and loves lasagna. (Seras): That’s Garfield! (Nitsuj): Close enough). Two days pass and Subaru and Emilia head out to the Sanctuary where thanks to a necklace given to them by Frederica the two pass out and wake up separated from each other in the woods. Subaru comes across an elf and chases after her where he winds up at the Sanctuary, hears a voice, and gets transported away to a field where waiting for him is the Witch of Greed herself, Echidna (scene here: https://youtu.be/RcrO4N4ZOqw).

So at the start of episode 3 you would think Subaru and Echidna would chat a bunch as I’m sure Subaru has a lot of questions for her, but nope he’s more concerned with getting back to Emilia and Otto pretty much shocking Echidna and everything (dude, ask her about your curse). She does however grant Subaru the power to take on the trial of the Sanctuary before sending him back and him promising to make time to chat with her later (scene here: https://youtu.be/7D33lFkSvvE). Once Subaru returns, he gets attacked by a demihuman who we find out is Garfiel. When he finds out they know Frederica he stops his attack and escorts him along with Otto and an unconscious Emilia (Seras: I’m amazed Subaru didn’t do anything to her) to the Sanctuary (scene here: https://youtu.be/Pda_S_v69H8). Emilia regains consciousness and just in time as they approach the barrier of the Sanctuary which is a haven for half-breeds like Emilia, Garfiel, and Frederica. It’s also the place where Echidna met her end. Once they enter the Sanctuary, they’re greeted by Ram who brings them to Roswaal who reveals that they’re all trapped in the Sanctuary now. The only way out of the Sanctuary is to pass the trial of the graveyard and only those with mixed-blood can take the trial (and a certain human a witch has become interested in) meaning Emilia has to take the trial in order to free everyone from the Sanctuary. Emilia agrees to take the trial and goes into the graveyard’s shrine where something goes wrong. Subaru rushes in where he’s allowed to take the trial as well. He finds Emilia unconscious on the ground (what is with this girl passing out?) and the trial begins for him which is facing his past. Subaru soon finds himself back in his world and gets rudely woken up by his buff dad (scene here: https://youtu.be/7bABhCybmU4. (Seras): Damn, the apple fell far from the tree).

In episode 4 we get a good dive into Subaru’s life and his internal struggles. We see he had 2 good loving parents and was of course a NEET who didn’t go to school (Seras: He’s a bum), but his parents were optimistic and didn’t push the issue. As he’s out walking with his dad, Subaru starts to remember his time in the other world and the two have a good heart-to-heart talk. We see that when Subaru was a child he was a natural at everything he did whether it was sports or studying. However, as he got older he began to fall behind everyone and he was confused as to why this was happening and didn’t know how to respond to it. Desperate to stand out, Subaru became the kid who did all the reckless things (you know, that one kid in your class who’s always getting into trouble over stupid things to get a good laugh out of everyone and get attention?). However, everyone eventually got bored with his stunts (and grew up obviously) and Subaru found himself alone and forced to realize that there was nothing special about him and that he wasn’t as talented as his old man (Seras: That man has abs for days. The fact that Subaru came from his loins confuses me). He spent the remainder of his middle school life doing his best not to stand out and once high school came he came across as a desperate boy looking for friends and scared everyone. One day he woke up and realized he didn’t want to go to school anymore. Still, his parents loved him and that was the thing that hurt him most. He wanted them to despise him, to be disappointed, to disown him, and to give up on him but it never happened. Basically, Subaru was comparing himself to his dad as was everyone else around him and at first he was okay with this but as time went on and he started to fall behind, he began to slowly hate his parents because he felt like a failure and no matter what he did it would never be good enough so he just gave up and wanted his parents to hate him for it. After his dad hears all of this he hits Subaru with an axe kick (Seras: It’s what any loving father would do) and tells him he doesn’t have be like him he just has to be Subaru and no one else (exactly. He gets it. Scene here: https://youtu.be/efR8vxRRdYM). His mom also tells him the same thing as he’s going back to school (scene here: https://youtu.be/ZZk2nEzqzJA) where he sees Echidna waiting for him.

Episodes 5-8

At the start of episode 5 Echidna says Subaru passed the first trial but has to do two more trials in order to break the barrier on the sanctuary. He chats with Echidna for a little bit before waking up by Emilia who is having a panic attack (I’m guessing her trial didn’t go so well. (Seras): Well she’s gonna be useless in the next trial). Subaru takes her back to the others where she falls asleep and Ram gives her some aroma therapy to keep her calm. While Subaru and the others talk with each other they receive a visit from Ryuzu a representative of the community as well as an elf. We find out later that her and Garfiel are leading a group who want to escape the Sanctuary while a conservative part of the group believes that the barrier should stay and limit their interaction with the outside world (given what we’ve seen in this world so far that might not be a bad idea). The next night Emilia does the trial only to fail again (Seras: Like I said useless. Same goes for Subaru who just blindly encourages her and not ask her what she saw). Subaru goes to give Roswaal a report where he reveals that everything that happened was everything he predicted would happen. He knew the Witch’s Cult would start to move when Emilia announced her candidacy for the throne and pretty much had faith that Subaru’s loyalty to Emilia would allow him to make an alliance with Crusch and defeat the Witch’s Cult (this son of bitch). Subaru is pissed about all of this as Roswaal admits that he put everyone’s life in danger, but the results speak for themselves. Emilia has gained the trust of the villagers and along with Subaru has gained credit for defeating Chris (I hate to say it but Roswaal did some good work here. I don’t agree with it but I can’t argue with the results). After that conversation we cut to 2 days later where Subaru convinced Garfiel to let the villagers go while Emilia stays and completes the trial which Garfiel has doubts about (Seras: I agree. This girl refuses to face her past. She is a coward with a pretty face). Subaru and the other villagers return to Roswaal’s territory where Subaru goes to check up on Frederica, Patra, and Rem only to discover that the mansion is empty. Subaru begins to panic and runs through the halls searching for anyone where he trips over his intestines which were cut open by Elsa who has returned for revenge.

(Seras): In episode 6 Subaru returns back to his save point which was when he passed the first test of the trial (Nitsuj: And Emilia had a panic attack. (Seras): Weakling). Once Emilia calms down and Subaru tells the others about the trial, he offers to do the rest of them to avoid seeing Emilia in pain. However, Emilia says she has to do this and I agree with her (give the fans a reason to like you). Roswaal also wants Emilia to be the one to free everyone from the Sanctuary (Nitsuj: It’ll earn her points for the throne). Since Emilia will be focusing on the trial, Subaru decides to head back to the mansion to save Petra and Frederica with Ram joining him (the big sister gets a chance to shine). They arrive back at the mansion where everyone is still alive and Subaru accuses Frederica of setting them up, but she swears she has no idea what he’s talking about and her oath forbids her from answering Subaru’s questions about the Sanctuary (we do discover that she’s the older sister of Garfiel). They decide to take Frederica back to the Sanctuary with them as a hostage, but before they can leave Elsa attacks the place with mabeast (scenes here: https://youtu.be/8JgX2iFyM40 and https://youtu.be/RCTNatSZDy0). The group manages to escape her and abandon the mansion, but Subaru doesn’t want to leave Rem and Beatrice behind. Frederica and Petra agree with Subaru and they head back into the mansion with Frederica fighting against Elsa and Ram taking on the mabeast. The ceiling of a room crashes down on Subaru and Petra where Petra gets killed and apparently Frederica lost to Elsa. In the final moments of the episode Subaru comes face to face with Elsa where just before he can accept his death he gets saved by Beatrice.

In the opening moments of episode 7 things get pretty intense as Subaru yells at Beatrice for saving him (Nitsuj: Asshole). When he tries to kill himself to restart, Beatrice stops him where it gets revealed that the reason she saved him and the reason she’s been interacting with him all this time is because of a book she calls her Gospel. The Gospel is pretty much Beatrice’s very existence for living, whatever is written in the book is what she will do without question. Whether it be talking to someone or answering a question, if it’s not written in the book Beatrice won’t do it (she’s a slave to literature). This basically means that Beatrice all this time had no feelings or care for Subaru at all, and even admits that she hates him (scene here: https://youtu.be/-9KGMOy81zc). Elsa enters the room (she defies magic) and kills Subaru where he returns to his save point. After that, Subaru decides to focus on Garfiel and Ryuzu. He learns that Garfiel and Frederica are half-siblings with different dads. Garfiel’s dad was a demihuman while Frederica’s dad was half-human half-demihuman meaning that she’s less demihuman than Garfiel and can leave the Sanctuary at will. Subaru tells them how he passed the first trial and plans on taking the rest to spare Emilia mental trauma (NO! She needs to face her past) and they take exception to that. They knock out Subaru and accuse him of being a member of the Witch’s Cult because of the miasma seeping from his body. Rather than kill him they lock him up in a secret location where three days later he gets saved by Otto who considers Subaru his friend (scene here: https://youtu.be/AmUqkwf2EIY).

Episode 8 is a pretty dark episode (even for this series). Subaru and Otto reunite with Ram where they plan to get him out of there, but before he leaves he wants to ask Roswaal about Beatrice and if she’s a member of the Witch’s Cult (Nitsuj: Wouldn’t that be a hell of a twist). Roswaal assures Subaru that Beatrice is not a member of the Witch’s Cult and even tells Subaru how to make her his ally. After his talk with Roswaal, Subaru prepares to leave with Ram and Otto but Garfiel finds them and tries to kill Subaru. Garfiel transforms into his beast form and goes on a rampage killing Otto as well as a few villagers until Subaru gives himself up in order to save everyone. Just as Subaru gives himself up, the necklace he got from Frederica begins to glow and he gets transported to where he was being held before. When he heads up top he sees that the Sanctuary is deserted and it’s snowing (how long was he out for?). He soon gets approached by rabbits with horns who swarm and eat him alive (Nitsuj: Giving us easily the most brutal death in this anime so far. *Warning: The following clip contains graphical violence and death. Viewer discretion is advised* Scene here: https://youtu.be/U49R3Gqx8lw). Subaru returns to his save point where he starts to have a mental breakdown after what happened (death by rabbits is a new one for me) and he gets transported back to the Windows desktop where Echidna is waiting for him. While talking to Echidna he finds out that he’s able to tell her about his Return by Death ability where nothing bad happens and Subaru just has a breakdown (scene here: https://youtu.be/PZER4ncUTyQ. (Nitsuj): He’s been unable to tell anyone about this and has experienced so many hardships. To actually be able to tell someone about this ability must have been a weight off his shoulders that I can’t even imagine).

Episodes 9-13

At the start of episode 9, Subaru has calmed down and is now chatting with Echidna. He does the smart thing and asks her about his powers such as why he received them, but not even she has an answer to that question (apparently the witch of envy was such an abnormality even to the other witches that not even they could get a handle on her). He then brings up his last death (Nitsuj: That was haunting and disturbing) where Echidna said he was attacked by the Great Rabbit one of the 3 Great Mabeasts along with the whale from last season and the Black Serpent. These mabeasts were created 400 years ago by Daphne the Witch of Gluttony, who created them to bring destruction to the world (Daphne had an insatiable appetite for destruction and death). The Great Rabbit is a collection of demonic rabbits who share one mind and want to eat everyone and everything. While in terms of power the whale was stronger, the rabbit is infinitely harder to kill as it can multiply at will and in order to truly defeat it you must kill all the rabbits at the same time. If even one is left alive it’ll multiply again within seconds. What’s worse is that this mabeast is in the Sanctuary and if the trial isn’t completed within 4 days then everyone is going to die. Since Subaru knows completing the trial in 4 days is impossible (because Emilia fails at life), he tries to think of some way to kill the Great Rabbit but comes up with nothing. Echidna says he could try talking to Daphne directly as all the spirits of the witches reside within her. However, she doesn’t recommend it as Daphne is incredibly dangerous, but Subaru knows this is his best chance to defeat the Great Rabbit. Subaru asks Echidna to let him meet Daphne and she does but warns him not to release her seal. Instead of Daphne appearing, Subaru instead meets Typhon, the Witch of Pride, who is just a child. At first, she seems harmless until she rips his arm off to see if he’s a bad guy (Nitsuj: Shit). Typhon then makes him fall apart before taking her leave where he gets put back together by Minerva, the Witch of Wrath (scene here: https://youtu.be/pjoFZ2jYcfc). After Minerva takes her leave, Subaru finally meets Daphne who is loli strapped and blindfolded to an iron maiden that has its own legs (Nitsuj: Oh that’s brilliant, why didn’t I think of that. Scene here: https://youtu.be/DnuASD5Lj-s). Daphne is more than happy to tell Subaru how to defeat the Great Rabbit. She explains that the Great Rabbit is attracted to mana, so the best course of action would be to use a magic user as a lure and then wipe them all out when they arrive. Subaru hears her loud and clear and she takes her leave allowing Echidna to return as it’s time for Subaru to leave. He returns to the real world with his memories of the tea party still intact but doesn’t see Emilia anywhere. He leaves the Sanctuary where he sees the whole place and he’s greeted by the Witch of Envy herself, Stella. Stella hugs Subaru saying she loves him (scene here: https://youtu.be/w2nIuevRZf4, you have a funny way of showing it) and just when it seems like Subaru is about to be engulfed by the shadows he gets saved by Garfiel. The two escape where the witch doesn’t go after them and instead tries to leave the Sanctuary as it appears to be heading towards Roswaal’s mansion (Nitsuj: Why?).

In episode 10 Subaru and Garfiel get cornered by Stella where Garfiel says everyone was already absorbed by her. Garfiel tries to fight her with clones of Ryuzu, but that fails horribly (next time splash some water on her). Stella kills Garfiel and advances toward Subaru who rejects her but doesn’t listen to him. It’s only when Subaru says he would sooner fall in love with Echidna does Stella pay attention to him (Nitsuj: So you have chosen death). Stella absorbs Subaru where instead of killing him he just floats inside of her all while she says ‘love me’ repeatedly (Nitsuj: Geez, it’s like someone’s personal Hell) and seeing the memories of her victims. Subaru eventually kills himself with a shard of light and we get to see Stella’s face where she looks almost like Emilia (scene here: https://youtu.be/heTdXtymC5U, this is surprising how?). Subaru wakes back up at his save point with Emilia where he cries from all the pain and torture he’s been through (scene here: https://youtu.be/oJ5I-0KJ9Co). After that, Subaru goes off the trail for this playthrough. He manages to find some ruins he saw when he was inside Stella and goes inside where he finds the real body of Ryuzu trapped within a crystal. The clones of Ryuzu explain that the Sanctuary was an experimental ground created by Echidna who was trying to become immortal. Her plan was to transfer her soul into Ryuzu but she discovered that they were both incompatible for each other. In the end, Echidna died but the Ryuzus continue to be born as their bodies are made of mana, watching over the Sanctuary with nowhere to go and no purpose in life. She goes on to explain that Subaru has become an Apostle of Greed meaning she follows him as well as Garfiel who we find out also took the trial like Subaru and became an apostle. The next day, Subaru sneaks out early to return to the mansion where he has a confrontation with Garfiel which goes nowhere (I’m sure it made more sense in the novel). Subaru soon makes it back to the manor where he gets Frederica, Petra, and Rem out of the mansion and goes to see Beatrice.

In the opening moments of episode 11 we see Subaru try to get Beatrice to leave, but she refuses to go anywhere (Nitsuj: The book decrees that she stay in the mansion). In a moment of revelation, Subaru grabs Beatrice’s books and sees that there’s nothing written inside (meaning Beatrice is just plain crazy). Beatrice explains that long ago there was writing in the book, but one day it just stopped. Subaru comes to the conclusion that Beatrice is a spirit in service to Echidna who created her to watch over the library for 400 years waiting for a certain someone to show up. Sadly, Echidna failed to tell her who that someone was and Beatrice has lived a hellish life because of it. Beatrice begs Subaru with tears in her eyes to kill her, but he just can’t (oh for God’s sake you’ve died a number of times and you were prepared to kill Crusch that one time because she spoke the truth. Scene here: https://youtu.be/33CB7RnwPFM). Their talk gets interrupted by Elsa who attacks them and the two run away to the village which was destroyed by Maylie a mabeast user who infiltrated the village as one of the children (Nitsuj: Can no one be trusted in this anime?). Elsa catches up to them and fights against Beatrice where at first it seems like Elsa is dead, but nope, she comes back and kills Beatrice (giving her peace for the first time. Scene here: https://youtu.be/j8QpNJ3wYN4). Subaru gets his eye gouged out and gets teleported back to the Sanctuary where it’s snowing (Nitsuj: Oh God, not again). He finds Emilia where she’s lost it. She’s obsessed with Subaru, clings to him like he was her favorite toy, and even says she loves him (well. . .she went through some changes. Not in a good way of course). So if you’re confused by this here’s what happened. When Subaru left, Emilia never received his letter meaning she thought that Subaru abandoned her because he thought she was useless. The anime glances over this, but Emilia is a girl with low self-esteem. She needs constant praise to reassure herself otherwise she’ll shut down. With Subaru gone for no reason, Emilia was left all alone and forced to do a trial that causes her to break down crying every time she does it with no one there to support her or lean on (Nitsuj: Wow, it’s no wonder she went borderline yandere on us. Admit it, if you were forced to face something that made you break down in tears every time and failed your mind would break too). Subaru than meets up with Garfiel and accuses Emilia for making it snow, but Subaru says this was all the work of Roswaal. Things only get darker from here as Roswaal kills Garfiel and Rem and reveals that he knows (or at least has an idea) of Subaru’s powers. He’s also in possession of the same book Beatrice has, so he’s either the one writing to Beatrice or he’s just like her, an agent of Echidna. Their talk ends with the arrival of the Great Rabbit (Great Rabbit: What’s up, doc?). Roswaal goes out to face the music while Subaru returns to a crazed Emilia with his body torn up and she allows him to use her as a lap pillow (scene here: https://youtu.be/zluJS4ETAWA, well this was definitely the darkest timeline. (Nitsuj): I think the berserk Puck was darker).

Episode 12 starts off with Subaru’s greatest deaths. When Subaru tries to talk to Echidna again he’s instead shown what happened in the timelines after his deaths and what became of the people (Nitsuj: Oh~ I hope they show the one where Rem brutally killed him. I’m curious what became of that timeline. Scene here: https://youtu.be/t-mz7XmqC8I). After reliving many of his deaths (Nitsuj: Boo~, you didn’t show the timeline I was interested in), Subaru regains consciousness and sees Rem and uses her sweet words to comfort Subaru and even goes in for a kiss until he regains control of himself and realizes that this isn’t Rem (scene here: https://youtu.be/EZzC8rl9l9w). The Rem impostor reveals herself to be Carmilla the Witch of Lust, a shy and cute little girl you wish was your sister. Subaru soon comes face to face with Echidna who tells him that he was experiencing the second trial (and failing horribly at it). For the rest of the episode, Echidna tries to form a contract with Subaru. On the surface it seems like a good idea as Subaru will have access to all of her knowledge and help, but the other witches show up to stop him. This allows us to meet the witch of sloth, Sekhmet (scene here: https://youtu.be/4cRUcnalJqM). Sure enough, Echidna had her own plans with the contract as it gets revealed that she’s sociopathic. She doesn’t understand the feelings of others. All she cares about is getting knowledge and Subaru’s Return to Death is a fountain of knowledge that she would love to get her hands on. The tipping point that makes Subaru say no to her contract is that she has no idea who Beatrice is waiting on meaning Echidna has been using Beatrice as a tool this whole time. We end the episode with the arrival of Stella (scene here: https://youtu.be/GhA4h8Sxmzc, now this tea party can really get started).

In the first half of the final episode, Subaru comes face to face with the witches. In a shocking turn of events we find out that the reason Stella gave Subaru his Return from Dead (aside from loving him) is because she wants him to love himself (Nitsuj: Kind of hard seeing as how the boy has a few issues he needs to work through). Subaru tries to do everything by himself not caring about what happens to him or the effect it’ll have on those around him (Nitsuj: He’s got a Superman complex. Every punch he takes is a punch nobody else has to take. A noble gesture, but he never considers what those around him feel like when he takes the punch for them. Scene here: https://youtu.be/W2c9-kIqfNI). Nothing much happens as the talk continues other than the fact that all the witches seem to like Subaru (why, I have no idea. Personally, I give him 5/10. (Nitsuj): Harsh. (Seras): Well he whines a lot and has several moments where he breaks down and throws tantrums like a child). Echindna offers her hand to Subaru again and once again he says no, saying he’s going to start loving himself more and reach for a future where he and everyone else is alive. Echidna gives Subaru a hint into breaking the barrier saying it has something to do with Garfiel being afraid to go out into the world. Subaru thanks the witches for all their help. Even Stella gets a thank you and a promise that he’ll save her down the road (scene here: https://youtu.be/uliCY_VThE8). Subaru regains consciousness and discovers some pretty disturbing things. First off, he can no longer take the trials anymore as Echidna took away his qualifications (should have took her up on the offer Subaru). Subaru also finds out that Roswaal is responsible for the attack on the mansion (Nitsuj: I knew he was a crazy asshole). He did this to strengthen Subaru’s resolve. He wants Subaru to do whatever he needs to do in order to make Emilia win even if that means doing stuff that she herself is against or doesn’t have the resolve to do. Subaru soon finds himself at wits end as he doesn’t know what to do (between the Sanctuary, the witches, Garfiel, the rabbits, the mansion, Rem, and Emilia going off the deep end it’s just too much to handle). Otto appears before Subaru telling him to take a deep breath and then punches Subaru telling him to stop putting on a face in front of others (scene here: https://youtu.be/KH4iITyag0o).

(Nitsuj): And that does it for the first half of the anime. We’re stopping here for now but tune in next week when we cover the second half as Aniween continues. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA-

*Seras cracks Nitsuj in the face with a frying pan made of copper and he falls to the ground*

(Nitsuj): Why?

(Seras): You’ve got to love the classics. Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
