Q&A Blog

Hello everyone, welcome to the Otaku Mind. Fresh off the heels of my 300th review I’m here to do the Q&A blog. Back in August I asked you guys to send me in your questions and today I’m here to answer as many as I can. Let’s get this Q&A blog going.

Why do you think the anime community has a division between Elitist and newcomers?

Good question. Personally, I think it all comes down to what your taste is. Elitist believe that their taste is the best and anyone who disagrees with them is an idiot who has no idea what they’re talking about. Newcomers are kind of all over the place. Because they haven’t watched anime as much as elitists they just watch a little bit of everything and over time develop their own taste in anime. For example, a lot of Elitist hate harem and ecchi anime. Personally, I like them. I admit they’re not the best but I still enjoy watching them, getting an occasional chuckle out of them, and seeing what they right or wrong.

Did you like Shingeki no Bahamut virgin soul?

I though it was meh. While not an awful season I felt that this season was unnecessary. The first season was better, ended on a good note, and there was nothing more to explore.

If you want to hear my full thoughts on the anime you can check out my review of it right here:

Favorite anime/manga?

My favorite anime is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I loved the story, characters, themes, action, and meaning behind the anime. I really do feel this was a great adaptation of a great manga. My favorite manga is One Piece. Ever since I first picked up the manga I have been invested in the series. I just love these characters and the world that Oda has built.

Can Alucard eat Saitama like what happen to Schrodinger’s cat?

Yes. But knowing Saitama he’d just punch his way out.

What got you into anime?

Just like most kids growing up in the 90s I got into anime by watching Pokémon and Toonami. But what kept me around was the creativity and imagination that anime showed me. As I kid I loved coming up with my own stories and creating my own characters. Anime showed me a bunch of new worlds, stories, characters, and life lessons that were slowly shaping me and turning me into the person I am today. In short, what got me into anime was the creativity and imagination that I couldn’t find nowhere else but in anime.

Are you into shounen or shoujo type of art?

I like both art styles as I read both shounen and shoujo manga but if I had to chose I would go with shounen art. It’s livelier and more creative in my opinion.

How to get girlfriends?

Approach with confidence, find out what her interests are, respect her, and most importantly be yourself. Stop being afraid and just go for it.

How old are you?

I just recently turned 30 at the beginning of the month.

How open are you about your passion for anime?

Very open. My parents and friends know I watch anime and know I run my own site. They’ve all been very supportive and proud of what I’ve accomplished with the site. I’m not ashamed of my anime fandom and if people think that’s strange than who cares what they think. If something makes you happy don’t let anyone take it away from you.

Do you collect anime stuff?

I collect artbooks and soundtracks.

Do you collect figurines?

No. I never really got into figurine collecting and I honestly have nowhere to put them in my house.

Do you have an anime related job?

I do not. I work in marketing and I’m a manager for a company I will not name for my personal privacy. Personally, I’m not sure if I would want one. On the one hand I be able to turn my hobby into my job and get paid for it but on the other hand I feel like I would be restrained from saying what I really want to say. If I am offered a job in anime than I want creative control over what I can do and say.

What’s your take on anime theme wallpapers?

I like them, especially fanart. In fact, I even use anime theme wallpapers as my desktop background on my personal computer.

Would you rather grow pumpkins or grapes?

Grapes. I like grapes. Especially the green ones.

Favorite animal?

That would have to be the elephant. They’re big, strong, and gentle. A perfect representation of me. My other favorite animals are owls and penguins. Owls are cool, and penguins are cute.

Favorite mythical creature?

The phoenix. A bird that shines as bright as the sun and can be reborn over and over again. What’s not to love about them?

How long do you intend to keep doing Project Nitsuj?

Never really thought about that. My original plan was to keep doing this until I grew bored or tired and seeing how I don’t see myself growing bored with anime I don’t see myself stopping. But if I really had to give a retirement date it would probably be when I’m 50 years old and even then, I’m not sure if I’ll stop.

What’s the most difficult part about starting a blog?

For me, the most difficult part came down to finding my own writing style. I know a lot of people say growing your audience is the hard part, but I think as long as you give the audience something fun and interesting to read they’ll keep coming back. Anybody can write a blog. You, the person reading this, can write a blog if you really felt like it but the question is how will you write it? You need to come up with your own writing style which separates you from the others and makes you memorable in the mind of the reader. So, I decided to go with a comedic, smart, and clever style of writing that reflects my personality.

Can you recommend soccer animes for me?

Soccer or futbol as they call it overseas was never my sport. But I do know a few good soccer animes out there. If you want over the top soccer than check out Inazuma 11. If you want something that’s more grounded than check out Days. The main character isn’t some prodigy or someone with special talents, he’s just a regular guy who loves the sport and works hard at it. If you like underdog stories, there’s Giant Killing where a manager takes control of a team that’s been on a losing streak for some time. Finally, there’s Captain Tsubasa, one of the most famous sport animes out there which features some of the coolest kicks I’ve ever seen. There’s actual vidoes of professional soccer players in Japan performing the kicks and everything.

Which anime would you recommend, Kuroko’s Basketball or Slam Dunk?

That’s a tough one. It really all comes down to what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for character development and story than go with Slam Dunk but if you’re looking for great basketball games with cool characters than check out Kuroko’s Basketball.

Are you going to do anymore original stories/specials like Journey to the East, 00 Otaku, etc.?

Yes, I would love to write another special for the site. As of right now I have no plans to write a special but just know that there will be more specials down the line featuring Nitsuj and his cast.

What’s the worst anime you’ve watched?

School Days. At first it was Ikkitousen but it had Kanu in it who I liked so that puts it slightly higher in my book. School Days on the other hand was pure boredom with no redeeming qualities and characters who are selfish and just plain awful.

If you could be a Pokémon which Pokémon would you be?

A Ditto. That way I could transform into any Pokémon I want to be.

If you could date an anime character who would it be?

It would be Rias from Highschool DxD, Robin from One Piece, Holo from Spice and Wolf, or Shirayuki from Akagami no Shirayukihime.

Have you ever considered making videos?

I have, but I decided against it. You guys have to remember this isn’t my day job, this is a hobby where I’m not making money. I would like to make money off it but that’s not my main focus here. I work a full-time job and just don’t have time to make videos. If I did I only be able to do one once a month as opposed to one or two blogs a week. Since there’s so many anime I would like to review and talk about I rather just write out a blog per week as opposed to doing one video per month.

Why are your blogs long?

Because I have a lot to say and talk about. Let’s say for the sake of argument an anime season has 12 episodes and each episode is 24 minutes. That’s 288 minutes which equals 4.8 hours. That’s about 2 Star Wars movies. I know my blogs can seem long at times but when you have a lot to cover and talk about you have a lot to cover and talk about. Plus, it’s only 3-7 pages on average (that should only take you 6-20 minutes to read), you guys make it sound like I’m asking you to read Moby Dick in one sitting.

Shounen or Seinen?

Well my favorite manga is a shounen manga so shounen but I do think seinen is great as well.

In Overlord Albedo or Shalltear?

Albedo all the way.

What was the weirdest nickname that you have heard that you, or someone you know had?

The weirdest nickname I had growing up was Nachos in high school. I was class president and every week my class would sale nachos to raise money. Since I always did announcements for nachos all my friends started to call me Nachos for the fun of it.

What is your preferred type of anime?

Action, comedy, fantasy, adventure, ecchi, isekai, and sci-fi.

Do you prefer classic anime or newer anime? In terms of art style, I mean.

I prefer the newer anime. Don’t get me wrong, the art style from the 80s and 90s were great but some of them haven’t aged well over the years. Today’s art style just catches my eye more and feels more distinguished from each other.

What kind of anime do you like?

Being that I’m a reviewer I’m open to all kinds of anime but I always find myself enjoying comedy, action, ecchi, and isekai anime the most.

Do you think the art and animation of an anime are important to make an anime watchable?

Yes, art style is very important to an anime, but I don’t think it’s the end all be all to an anime. I believe that as long as you have a compelling story with good characters, writing and themes you’ll be fine. I mean, take a look at Panty and Stocking. The animation is very cartoonish, but the characters are funny and so is the story. Or how about Golden Kamuy? The animation is really nothing to write home about but the real selling point of this anime is the story and characters. While animation is important I think the most important thing to any anime are the story and characters.

Why does your username sound like a virus?

*Chuckles* Well I can assure you my username is not a virus, not that I know of. Nitsuj is actually my real name spelled backwards, Justin. My username pays tribute to Jun Seba aka Dj Nujabes, the man responsible for the Samurai Champloo soundtrack. I was a big fan of his work, Samurai Champloo had one of the best soundtracks in anime history.

Is it true that One Punch Man will get a 2nd season? If so, when will it be?

Yes. One Punch Man is getting a second season. I heard it was coming out this year but looking at the schedule I think it won’t be out until 2019 or 2020.

What chapter of the manga of Terraformars did the anime season 2 end? And also what chapter of the manga Golden Kamuy in the manga end?? And also hina’s festival.

I can’t help you with Terraformars, I honestly couldn’t watch the second season because it was so awful. For Golden Kamuy, the anime covered all the way up to chapter 62 so start with 63. For Hina’s Festival, start at chapter 48 but be warn, there will be a time skip.

What order should I read the Devilman manga?

Start with the prequel called Demon Knight, followed by the original 72’ version of the manga than pick-up Shin Devilman, Devilman G, and Devilman Saga.

If you were to recommend a manga to me that is in your opinion the best manga that you’ve read what will you recommend me?

I would have to say One Piece. I know its cliché, but this series truly is amazing and the greatest manga I’ve ever read. It’s long, I admit, but totally worth reading from beginning to end.

Where can I buy the Merlin FGO funko pop online?

Galatictoys.com and derivefigurine.com.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I like hip-hop, R&B, jazz, Japanese rock, and future bass.

Are there any Japanese bands or singers you recommend?

If you like hip-hop check out M-Flo. For rock music we have UVERworld, SID, Granrodeo, Flow, Man with a Mission, and Monkey Majik. Also, check out Unchain, I recently started getting into their music and so far I’ve enjoyed it. For singers there’s BoA, Crystal Kay, the Vocaloids, and almost every VA out there.

I heard you were a fan of wrestling. What are your thoughts on NJPW?

Tranquillo! Assenayo! I love it!

What is your favorite videogame?

Persona 3, 4, and 5.

Well guys that’s all the time we have for questions. Thanks again you guys for all the questions, I hope I was able to answer all of them well, and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
