Disneytoon-cember Part 34: Gravity Falls

By popular demand I’m here to talk about Gravity Falls hands down on of the best cartoons to come out within the last years. This was a show I never paid that much attention to when it first aired but then I heard everyone talking about how great it was so I decided to check it out and yeah it is a great show. To be honest, when I first heard about I was shocked. I was like get out of here, there’s no way Disney would produce a show like this. This show seems like something that would be on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon or Discovery Family but on Disney a channel that prides itself on giving kids safe shows to watch? Man, I’ve been out of the game for too long.

The show centers around the 12-year old twins Dipper and his sister Mable. It’s summertime and their parents have sent them up to Oregon to spend the summer with their Great Uncle Stan aka Grunkle Stan in the fictional town simply known as Gravity Falls. Dipper and Mable think the place will be boring but as the summer goes on they find out that Gravity Falls is a strange and mysterious place filled with paranormal creatures and supernatural situations. The whole show is basically one big summer adventure as everyday there’s something strange and crazy happening in the show and it works. The level of creativity in this show is amazing, some of the best I have seen. In a way the show kind of reminds me of Rick and Morty only for kids. Which is ironic seeing as how the creators of both shows are actually fans of each other’s shows and it’s hinted that their universes might be connected (if it is that just makes this show even greater in my eyes).

The characters are also interesting and well-written. I like how Dipper and Mable are different from each other. Dipper is a man of science, an adventurer, a guy who believes in the facts and getting the job done while Mable on the other is eccentric, outgoing, optimistic, and embraces the bizarreness of Gravity Falls. The two work off each other greatly and have a good relationship with one another. They’ve always got each other’s back and help each other through their problems. Grunkle Stan is my favorite character, he’s a selfish businessman always using underhanded tactics to make a quick buck and manages to get a lot of laughs out me. But despite his selfishness he does care and love the twins even putting his life on the line for them. His character development through the course of the show is done amazing well as he becomes this very deep and multi-layered character that you can’t help but love. Soos is the lovable helper and Wendy is one of the best written female teens in an animated series that I have seen. In the show Dipper has a crush on her and it’s actually played correctly as their age difference is pretty close (she’s 15) and even though Dipper knows he has no shot with her he still can’t help but fawn over her. It’s cute and resembles that of an adolescent boy. In fact, this an amazing job showing the benefits of growing up but also the hardships of growing up. Dipper and Mable will be 13 when summer is over and they each try to handle this in their own little way while helping each other.

On top of the great characters each episode has amazing, funny, and well-written stories that you can’t help but enjoy from beginning. Each episode has you embrace the bizarre nature the show sets up for you. You feel as if you’re right there with the characters on the same adventure and embracing the bizarre situation they’re in but not feeling scared or panicking because you know they’re gonna find a way out of it and when that adventure is over the next day gives us a whole new adventure to go on that’s just as bizarre as the one they just finish if not more bizarre. I seriously underestimated the writers for this show on numerous occasions. These writers are fantastic and anyone who’s thinking about going into writing should really check this show out. The writing for this show is that good. What else can I say? Gravity Falls is a strange and bizarre show with great characters, great writing, and great lessons for kids as well as adults. If you haven’t checked it out yet I highly recommend watching it.
