Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. We’re still in the middle of the Demon lord arc and one of the things that always bothered me about the stories of demon lords is the aftermath. In fantasies we see the hero rise up and defeat the demon lord and everything returns to peace with everyone living happily ever after. Yeah, that’s pretty much bullshit in today’s world. What really happens after the demon lord dies? While it’s true defeating the demon lord will bring peace to the world what happens to everyone in it? How does this effect the world as a whole now the enemy of mankind is dead? This is a question that Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita tries to answer. Often shorten to just Yuushibu, Yuushibu is based off a light novel series written by Jun Sakyou from 2012-2014 and shows us a possible interpretation of the world after the demon lord is vanquished. In the fall of 2013, the small studio Asread (Future Diary) turned the series into an anime and became one of the most underrated animes of 2013. Let’s see what the world is like without the demon lord, this is Yuushibu.
Opening and Ending Theme
The opening for this anime is “Extra Revolution” by ZAQ. It’s a pretty good opening. It’s exciting, energetic, loud, and totally gets you pumped for the anime. “Sticking Places” by Sphere is the ending and just like opening it’s pretty good as well. Surprisingly I feel that this would have worked better as an alternate opening for this anime. I like the singer and I do like the animation the setting of an epic RPG battle only to discover it’s really the dream of one of our main characters.
Episodes 1-4
So we start the anime with our main character Raul voiced by Keisuke Koumoto. He’s in a training stimulation with his friends at a school for training heroes where they have dreams of graduating and going off to fight the Demon Lord (now’s there’s something worth fighting for. Why can’t the military motivate us like that). But unfortunately they find out that the Demon Lord has been defeated and peace has come to the world meaning there’s no place for them in the world anymore and they have no backup plan (oh that sucks. This is like going to medical school and studying medicine and after you graduate you find out all the diseases in the world have been cured and there’s no need for doctors anymore. What the hell do I do now). We fast forward two years later where we see Raul is working at small electronics store called Magic Shop Leon where he works with two beautiful big-breasted girls named Nova voiced by Madoka Sowa and their boss Seara voiced by Maina Shimagata. After a swarm of customers come in demanding magical cassette tapes (somehow I feel as if we’ve taken a step backwards in terms of technology here) a girl named of Fino voiced by Azusa Tadokoro who Raul mistakes as a boy (it’s a girl you jackass) comes in demanding a job at the store. We also get this scene of this perverted old geezer (scenes here: //youtu.be/XK-cHGbkZRE and //youtu.be/eSNPJwtqS84. What are you waiting for, smack that ass). She gets the job but Raul notices on her resume that she put that she’s the Demon Lord’s child (well at least she’s honest) much to his shock (well that’s kind of awkward, a wannabe hero and a demon princess working together at the same store. Either the store will be destroyed or those two will have hot sex). Seara has Raul train Fino who has no social skills and knows nothing about the outside world or humans (welcome to the human race). After Fino gets wet and faints Raul finally finds out that Fino is a girl (took him long enough. I’m serious he went through the half episode not realizing that Fino’s a girl and it was pretty obvious too I’m guessing observational skills weren’t in the criteria at hero school). Shocked to see that Fino’s a girl even though it was on her resume (you notice the demon lord part but not the girl part? Priorities man, priorities) he clears up the misunderstanding and she finally gets her uniform. After that we just see her learning how to say thank you to people and finding out that she’ll be living at the store for a time being (invite her back to your place hero boy. Didn’t they teach you manners).
In episode 2 Raul continues to teach Fino how to talk to customers and say thank you (scene here: //youtu.be/1HN5vTHYwyw, okay I seriously worry about this girl). While that’s going on we get a little more backstory into Raul in how he tried to adapt to society after the Demon Lord died but just couldn’t find any work and how somewhere along the line he gave up on his dreams of becoming a hero (don’t ever give up your dreams, if a man has nothing to strive for he might as well be dead). While Fino is watching the store by herself a thief comes in trying to rob them who Fino in her innocent comedic mistakes as a customer and hijinks ensue (I have to admit it is quite funny and cute to see how she doesn’t realize the guy is trying to rob her but she’s trying so hard to be a good worker and help the customer). Raul comes and tells her what’s going on and the two beat the thief up and have him arrested (scenes here: //youtu.be/Nyog9bOurZU and //youtu.be/NfUusx83oqA, hey wait there’s a job for Raul, why didn’t he just become an officer). After work Raul goes to eat with a few of his friends from the hero academy (I imagine that’ll be quite the reunion. Hey guys I’m working part-time at a convenience store drop by sometime). While they’re eating he sees that his friends still haven’t given on becoming a hero and are just waiting for the day when they’ll be needed again in the world (better sit tight boys because I’ve seen the next demon lord and trust she ain’t going anywhere). This talk re-sparks his motivation in becoming a hero and after giving Fino a test on how to properly talk to customers where she passed he decides that he still going to continue working at the store while also pursuing his dreams of becoming a hero (he’s gonna fall in the love with the demon girl isn’t he).
We start off episode 3 by finding out that Fino has moved into the same apartment building as Raul and is living right next door to him (employees living under the same roof? I’m sure that’s a violation of the employee handbook. Careful Raul she’ll probably try to sneak into your bed at nighttime). We also get introduced to a new character in the show a girl by the name of Lore who also works at the store. She’s responsible for deliveries and in-home maintenance so she’s rarely seen around the store. I also forgot to mention that there are other characters we met last episode. One is Elza, a polite big-breasted girl and friend of Raul who likes to buy magical items and is quite knowledgeable of them and the other is Lamdimia nicked named Lam a petite black-haired girl who everyone sees as child. It’s hinted that she’s demon just Fino but at this time it’s unsure. These two work at a convenience store right next to the electronic store and Raul goes over there for lunch so he has a good friendship with them. After taking Fino over there to meet them they return to the store where they receive new merchandise a state of the art air conditioner done by some company they’ve never heard of (oh well I’m sure this won’t come back to hurt us). As they’re examining the air conditioner Raul old friend and rival Airi comes in to the shop to check up on him and browse the store (I swear he’s gonna start a harem with all these girls by the end of the anime). Just like Raul she too had dreams of becoming a hero and belittles Raul for giving up on becoming one but after the Demon Lord die she was force to find a job as well (what job is it? Don’t know but I’m sure we’ll find out eventually). When they turn on the air conditioner machine it starts to go haywire and sprouts tentacle hands and begins tentacle raping the girls and dissolving Airi’s clothes (*laughs* tentacle raping air conditioner, that’s a new one. It’ll keep you cool on hot summer days while also offering you surprise butt sex, the perfect gift for your lonely female friends. Only $199.99 call now while supplies last). As their fighting it Raul reawakens his hero instincts and with the help of Fino they rescue everyone and turn off the evil surprise butt sex air conditioner where it sprays it’s white goo all over Fino (//youtu.be/nbsWQqnWS_s). We end with Fino introducing herself to Airi and unintentionally dropping hints that she’s a demon.
Not a whole lot happens in episode 4. Fino is asked to help out Elza and Lam at their store for the day and learns all sorts of new things such as how to talk to customers better and not scare the living shit out of them with her demon talk, prepare coffee, makes some amazing udon, and even get over her small fear of using electronics (plus she’s look cute in their uniform). While that’s going on Raul feels a little lonely not having Fino in the store (you liiiike~ her) and starts to feel a little nervous around Nova since she made the comment that she wouldn’t mind Raul touching her butt (she’s giving you permission so it’s not sexual harassment touch away).
Episodes 5-8
In episode 5 the Amada Company a big name store brand company (the Walmart of this universe if you will) has set up shop in Raul and friend’s town and are stealing their business. In order to get a full understanding of their store Seara sends Raul and Fino in the store undercover as a couple. We see that the store has the latest equipment, offers them at lower prices, and are way bigger than their store (they also are giving away free meat so that’s a big win for them). That pretty much the jest of what happens in this episode, Raul and Fino just explore the store and we find out that Airi is working in the store as well as a Bunny Girl employee (and she has the nerve to insult Raul for working in an electronic store).
In episode 6 Raul and Fino have Airi show them around the rest of store since she can’t stand seeing Raul and Fino act like a couple (a girl’s jealousy, truly there is nothing like in the world). They get discovered by the employees are Amada and are asked to leave (fine, but only if you leave the town and apologize to the world for all that all have done) but not before Raul gets a cool moment and tells them that they will be crushed. The next day Raul and Fino go out to a customer’s house to refill their magic gauge for free since the owner of the house can’t use magic (well that’s nice of them). At the house they find out that a slime monster has been absorbing the magic of the house and with the help of Fino they’re able to destroy and have its white hot liquid fall on Fino’s face (//youtu.be/nbsWQqnWS_s, again). We end with Lore calling Raul and telling him they have a problem (we wasted 4 episodes and are now establishing a plot).
We see in episode 7 an old lady who they sold an air conditioner to has a double booking with Amada. It turns her son and his ordered an air conditioner from Amada without telling the old lady and new the two stores are double booked to install an air conditioner in their new house (alright. Take two pistols, 10 paces, and turn around and fire. The one left standing gets to install their air conditioner. This may be old fashion but sometimes the old ways are the best solution). Not wanting to cause anymore trouble for the old lady Raul and the gang decide to back down and let Amada install their air conditioner (no! pistol, 10 paces, fire! Now). As the Amada is about to install the air conditioner he discovers that the house barely has any magic energy and can’t install the air conditioner. He tells them that it’s the wiring and they’ll have to rewire the house which is very costly. Raul and the gang decide to look into the matter while the Amada guy goes to do his other stops (well that’s rude. These people are buying an air conditioner from you, search the place and see if you can find the problem you bag of assholery). Lore discovers that the house is infested with slime monsters which have been eating away at the house’s magic energy. In order to lure them from out of the house Lore sets up a magic trap using Fino to lure them out. The plan works and all of the slimes come out of the house and somewhat absorb rape Fino where she destroys them all. Happy and thankful for what Raul and the gang did the old lady’s son decides he wants their air conditioner from Raul’s store instead of Amada (see, customer satisfaction is always the most important thing in a business). After their job is finish they go to the bathhouse to clean themselves, have a small party to celebrate their victory over Amada (a well-deserved victory) and go home. The next morning Raul wakes up to Fino naked and sleeping in bed with him (for the love of God please say you had sex with her because the sexual tension between you guys has been building up quietly all season and it needs to be released. Scene here: //youtu.be/1GbLaxXm0yg). We end the episode with a heatwave hitting the city and Raul and Fino arriving at the store only to find Nova passed out on the floor.
Picking up where episode 7 left off in episode 8 we see that Nova just fainted from scorching heat because the air conditioning is broken (of course it is. Scene here: //youtu.be/7EdCPsTuIEA). After that the store decides to hold a summer sale outdoors in the scorching heat (scene here: //youtu.be/yw0RSSvOUyM) where at first they don’t get any customers but when Fino, Nova, and Seara start wearing swimsuits business starts to pick up (scene here: //youtu.be/_DRJMPTWhfA, I’m surprise they didn’t just do this in the beginning. It’s like they say sex sells). They begin to sell all kinds of stuff but not the stuff they need to sell which is cameras but luckily Elza and Lam come over on their day off and get forced into helping them on their sell. Lam tells customers that if they buy a camera they can take pictures of the girls doing sexy poses (scene here: //youtu.be/JOoP_6cXCA8, the woman is a marketing genius). The cameras begin to sell like hotcakes (or snowcones since it’s a hot summer day) and they eventually sell out. Eventually Airi shows up to spy on them where she’s most unpleased with the way the girls are dressed and finds it shameless (said the woman who wears a bunny outfit at her job). She also gets forced into posing sexy for the cameras under the disguised of a mask beauty (scene here: //youtu.be/ItUvF1f0R7U, we shall call her Mask Bikini). At the end Lore fixes the air conditioner and old lady’s son from last episode shows and reveals that he’s a reporter for a big magazine company who wants to write an article about the store.
Episodes 9-12 and OVA
In episode 9 it’s payday and Raul gets roped into helping Fino use her money wisely so the next day the two go shopping and have somewhat of a date (a hero and a demon princess going on a date? I can dig it). There “date” seems going well as the two do seem to be having fun and Fino buys a lot of silly things such as a wooden bear statue, food, a flag of this world’s version of Mt. Fuji, a vase, and paper lantern but she does buy two really nice things. One is a new dress which looks great on her and even makes Raul start to see how cute Fino is (about time he noticed it) and she buys Raul a cellphone made from the hair of a hero who died at the hands of the demon lord (it’s the thought that counts) as a way of thanking him for always being there for her. Near the end of the episode she gets attacked by these shadowy heroes who know that she’s the demon lord’s daughter and demand that she become the next demon lord so they can become heroes again.
Shit starts to get real in episode 10. We find out that Fino doesn’t want to be a demon lord and that she ran away from home because she has dreams of one day opening up her own Leon store in the demon realm and making life better for the demons (well that’s a nice dream) where she’s the boss and Raul is there with her as the assistant manager (oho, love flag rising between the would-be hero and demon princess. Called it). Raul finds out that his old hero buddies are the ones who attacked Fino in the last episode (figures, they had to use them for something otherwise they be a waste of animation) because they want her to become the next demon lord they can live out their dreams of being heroes (and all it’ll cause you is your pride as men and heroes and the dreams of a sweet innocent girl. This is why I prefer the rogue hero over the holy hero). They invite Raul to join but he refuses shocking them greatly (it’s called honor boys look it up. It’s essential to being a hero). As if that wasn’t bad enough Fino gets captured in broad daylight by another demon called Raid who I assume was an adviser of the old demon lord (look I know demons lack subtlety but you just kidnapped a girl in broad daylight what the fuck man). He takes her to the hero school (making zeroes to heroes since 1189) where Fino finds out that Raul used to be a hero in-training and that it was always his dream to fight the demon lord (he never told the girl that he was hero? Dick move man. She was honest enough to put that she was the demon lord’s daughter the least you could do was tell her you were a wannabe-Link from Legend of Zelda).
Things just keep getting more exciting in episode 11 where Raul returns to the hero academy (ahh~ the memories, I imagine he spent many of days washing these hallways with a rag cloth as punishment for skipping class) and goes into one of the study halls where he across his friend Blaze who fights using a real sword and tells Raul the truth about the demon lord. It turns out that the heroes from the past worked out a deal to keep the demon lord that way would always need heroes and keep people busy (well that plan backfired on account of I don’t know YOU FUCKING KILLED HIM AND ALLOWED WORLD PEACE TO SET IN). Raul takes this surprisingly well laughing it off like The Joker would after getting a beating from Batman and grabs a ruler where he owns Blaze off screen and leaves him lying unconscious in the study hall (ha, he just got owned by a ruler and this guy wanted to be hero. Better find yourself a new profession boy). While that’s going the other friend of Raul takes a three headed blue lightning dragon (oh shit it’s the Blue Eyes White Dragon’s lesser known and weaker cousin Yellow Eyes Blue Dragon we’re surprisingly gonna be okay) to destroy the magic shop but has no luck and gets defeated (seriously, this guy wanted to be hero. Go off and kill demons and stuff yet he can’t even defeat a bunch a normal citizens. This is even sadder than Link getting owned by a bunch of chickens in those Dorkly vidoes). Back on Raul’s side he finds Fino chained to a pole (I’m sure he’s dreamt about this many times in his sleep) and tries to untie her (she can get herself out. Use your magic powers or something) but he gets interrupted by Airi who wants to kill Fino not out of vengeance because her family was killed by demons or because she’s a hero it’s because it’s all she’s got left in the world (yeah why don’t you just admit that you can’t stand Raul possibly doing the horizontal bop with her instead of doing it with you). So the two fight where Fino begs them to stop and Raid eggs her on to activate the blood necklace which will allow her to become the next demon lord (so wait if all it takes is a necklace to become the next demon lord why doesn’t he just put it on and become demon lord). After a clash it seems that a piece of the sword has struck Raul’s heart causing Fino to activate the necklace and fly off to Mt. Fuji (I know the mountain has a name but let’s be honest it’s Mt. Fuji). After she leaves we see that Raul’s okay, Airi stops and realizes the errors of her ways and now sees Fino as her friend, and Raul tells Raid that he now knows what kind of hero he wants to be (rogue hero, rogue hero, rogue hero). A hero that unites the world where humans and demons can live together and where there won’t be a need for heroes at all (dream hero, not a bad a route for him). Raid decides Raul won’t be needed in the world anymore and is about to attack him but Seras comes in on a magic vacuum cleaner and with the help of Elza and products from the store defeats Raid with ease. With Fino getting ready to open the demon Raul, Airi, Lam (who reveals that she’s a demon. No surprise there), Lore, and the old-man who likes to grope Nova’s butt fly off to Mt. Fuji to save Fino to end the episode.
In the final episode Raul and the gang to fight their way up to Mount Fuji battling harpies, skeleton knights, and ogres (oh my) and eventually reach the gate to the demon world where if Fino passes through the gate her transformation to a demon lord will be complete. Lam and Airi decide to hold back the demon forces while Raul goes on ahead to save Fino (the hero must always go to the final battle alone). He reaches Fino who now has red eyes and apparently no nipples see as how she’s wearing a very, very, VERY revealing costume that pretty much exposes her breast fully and actually makes Airi’s costume look subtle. At first Fino doesn’t recognize Raul and begins attacking him but after Raul reminds her of her times at Leon she’s able to regain control of her body and stop herself. But like always it’s too late the door to the demon world has open and Fino being drawn to it like a mosquito to a bug zapper (//youtu.be/vod9DL4IhBM). Raul gets between Fino and the door and tries to close it (//youtu.be/aAPdeX7FCVk) so Fino begins to strangle him but once again Raul reminds her of her times at Leon and tells her everyone including him is waiting for her to return. This once snaps her out of it and the door to the demon world is closed once again and for some reason her demon armor falls apart and she’s naked now (I ain’t complaining). We end with things going back to normal and Airi quitting Amada and deciding to work at Leon (the pay check may be smaller but you’ll never be bored) and that’s the end.
There’s an OVA that came out for this anime earlier this year where Raul’s little sister Miuri comes to visit and not wanting disappoint her he makes up the fact that he’s a hero, gets Fino to play the demon lord, and gets all his friends to help set up this big hero quest where Raul defeats Fino and saves Princess Seara. The adventure takes place in a hotspring resort where Raul rescues Nova from Lore, fights Airi in a sword fight, takes on Erza and Lam in a whirlpool, and finally rescues Serara where Fino shows up with a monster plant she can’t control and it’s capture all the girls and dissolves their clothes except for Miuri since she’s a minor (thank God). Raul tries to save them but isn’t strong enough that is until Miuri unleashes her powerful magic and gives it to Raul where he easily defeats the plant monster and saves the girls. Miuri returns back home and leaves happy knowing that her brother is in fact a hero no matter what. I liked this special. I thought it was funny and cute that Raul cared about his little sister and wanted to make her proud of him. I like how Fino pretends to be the Demon Lord but keeps messing up on her lines and even when she makes a mistake at the end she’s proud of it. The fights are pretty funny and ecchi with uncensored fanservice so I say check it out after you’ve got done watching the series.
Final Thoughts
So that was Yuusibu and yeah it’s a pretty good anime. Fino was hands down the best part of this anime. Every time she’s on screen she is bursting with energy and giving it her all. Even when she messes up she maintains a positive attitude. Even though it may seem like she’s not listening deep down she is. She’s trying to learn and adapt to the human culture. I do like how even though she doesn’t want to be the demon lord she still acts like one. She’s got the evil laugh and everything and even though she’s decided to go a different path she still wants to help her people and is trying to find a way for both sides to live in peace. The rest of the characters are somewhat of a letdown except for Raul. He’s pretty cool, you do feel his pain of losing his dream and being forced to work a job beneath him yet despite this he still maintains hope that he’ll find someone to make his dream come true. The rest of the characters don’t really get that much develop. Nova is just there for fanservice, Seara and the other employees are just there, Lam and Elza are sort of wasted especially Elza who obviously has a crush on Raul and why doesn’t she work at the store since she has such an extensive knowledge on machines. But the most wasted character is Airi who just turns into a lesser female version of Raul. They really could of did a lot with her.
The animation next to Fino is the next best thing about this animation. The character designs are good and I really do like the world they’ve created for this series. It’s got a nice balance of modern life mixed in with the magical element. Music wasn’t really all that noticeable for me and didn’t leave much of an impact. Fanservice is very good and yes there’s a lot of fanservice in this anime but it’s done pretty well and they really don’t go overboard with it. Probably the biggest letdown in this anime is the story. I do like the idea of exploring a world after the demon lord is gone and the setup between Leon and Amada being rivals was good. I was hoping we get a ma and pa store versus the big bad corporate store and down the line we would find out demons were in charge of the store and were using it to take over the world. But nope, instead, we get the cliché story of we want the demon lord back and if she won’t become the demon lord we’ll make her one by force.
Final Score
The final score for Yuusibu is a 7/10. Besides the cliché story and some characters not having time to develop I rather enjoyed the anime. I liked the two main characters and the idea of exploring a world after the demon lord dies is a good idea and one I hope to see explored more in the future. There’s a lot of fanservice in this anime so if you’re not a fan of it than you’re probably better off watching The Devil is a Part-Timer. But if you don’t mind fanservice definitely check this anime out. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
