I decided to put these two together because they both premiered at the same time. Let’s start with The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. The show centered around two kids who trick the Grim Reaper into being their friend for life. We have Billy the happy go lucky idiot, Mandy the arrogant little girl who is smart and wants absolute power, and Grim the Grim Reaper with a Jamaican accent. Much like Cow and Chicken the show was surreal and followed the crazy adventures of the trio. This show is really hard to talk about because of all the craziness that happen and the fact that each episode was inconsistent. All I can say is that this show somehow caught on with everybody and was somewhat popular actually landing 6 seasons and 3 TV movies. That’s pretty impressive for shows these days and considering that the show revolved around a dumb boy, a disturbing girl, and a Jamaican Grim Reaper that’s saying a lot.
I was in the neutral zone for this show. The only episodes that really made me laugh was the episode where Mandy and Grim try to cure Billy’s fear of clowns and the one where Billy gets a girlfriend who looks like Billy in drag clothes and it turns out the girlfriend actually has a crush on Grim and Billy can’t see it so he accuses Grim of trying to steal his girlfriend. Like I said before I was in the neutral zone on this series, I remember watching quite a lot of episodes for this series but in all honesty I don’t remember that many episodes that stood out or really hook me to series to make me like it. I guess you could think of it as one of those shows you remember watching a lot but a show you don’t remember that much about. I will say however that I did like how Grim was a Rasta man but other than that the show was surreal, gross, and not really all that funny to begin with.
Moving on to Evil Con Carne. Originally these two shows were combined in a show called Grim and Evil where the first part would be a Grim episode the second part an Evil episode and the final part a Grim episode again. But after the first season they decided to split the two shows up and see which one was the more popular one. Can you guess who won? Evil Con Carne was a spin off and revolved around a Hispanic billionaire played boy named Hector Con Carne who wanted to take over the world. But due to an accident his body gets destroyed and only his brain and stomach survive the explosion and they get attached to a circus bear named Boskov. The showed just revolved around the silly antics of Hector and his men trying to conquer the world and failing each time. I will give this show credit in that Hector is a silly villain you can tell he enjoys being evil and even though he’s not good at it and doesn’t have the best crew to work with he’s tries his best. He’s also somewhat intimidating, even though he’s just a brain and stomach attached to a circus bear he’s still comes off as a rather intimidating person who you don’t wanna mess with or cross. I think this is largely due to his voice done by Phil LaMarr who just comes in and just makes this character come to life so props to him. Outside of Hector the other characters don’t really stand out but they do manage to get a laugh out of you here there like Major Doctor Ghastly who developed weapons, plans, and had a serious crush on Hector, General Scarr the corrupted second in command who often tried to killed Hector and take over in fact he was actually more evil than Hector I’m surprise the show didn’t revolve around him, and finally Destructicus Hector and Ghastly’s son from the distant future who wanted to be a good guy but still loved his parents. That’s pretty much all there is to the show, it wasn’t really all that interesting and only lasted for like one season until the network decided to pull the plug on the show. And rightfully so the show was lame and not really worth anyone’s time. For me these two shows were alright, you could watch them to pass some time but other than that they weren’t all that special to me.
