This was the first movie that Disney turned into a toon. Now Aladdin was a good movie. I remember watching it a lot as a kid and enjoying it (mostly because I had a crush on Jasmine. Don’t judge me). The story was good, the characters were good, it had good songs, and a pretty cool and evil villain. The TV show really didn’t pull me in all that much.
The show was basically the adventures of Aladdin and his friends that took place between movies 2 and 3. Much like Timon and Pumbaa it wasn’t anything special and was just Disney cashing in on a good movie and its characters. But surprisingly a lot of people really did seem to like this show growing up and I never understood why. I mean it’s not a bad show I watched it quite a bit but I just never really got into it as a lot of people. I did like how they tried to expand Aladdin’s world more and introduced new villains to the show but other that I never really got into the show that much. I guess for me it just lacked that fun charm that the movies had which drew me in. For starters Aladdin and Jasmine did seem a bit dull in the show. I was hoping the show would explore more of their relationship but it kind of glances over that. The side characters remain the same throughout the show. Apu and Iago are still the annoying side animals, and Genie didn’t have that many funny lines. Just like the Nostalgia Critic said you can tell Castellaneta is trying to be funny but the writers just aren’t giving him the right material to work with. They really should have sat down with him and bounced ideas off each other. So in the end Aladdin wasn’t really my show. It’s not bad but for me it didn’t hold that charm that drew me to the first movie.
