Have you ever wanted to see the female equivalent of Doug? No, me neither. But a show that comes close to Doug and is the female equivalent is Pepper Ann the show about the day to day life of a 12-year old girl and her whacky shenanigans with her friends. The show got started roughly around the same time as Disney’s Doug so the shows were often compared quite a bit back in the day. Can you really blame us the shows were almost identical.
Like I said before the show just focuses on Pepper Ann and her shenanigans. The show’s formula was pretty basic. Pepper Ann has a moral dilemma, chooses the wrong the decision, doesn’t listen to her friends or family, faces the consequences of her choices, and learns a lesson. That’s pretty much the show in a nutcase. They presented all sorts of the dilemmas that other shows at the time were doing so they really weren’t doing anything new or innovative but I will admit that I did like watching this show more than Doug. Pepper Ann did have a character and wasn’t really bland. She was eccentric at times, clever at times, egoistical at times, and of course always did learn her lesson in the end. But she never really got to the point where she was annoying or dull. One of the things I did like about the show was how her parents were divorced. I think this was the first kids show I saw where the parents were actually divorced instead of one of them just being dead. Despite the divorce we see that she does have a good relationship with both of them. Now I’m not saying divorce is good it is sad when it happens but this show shows us that despite parents being separated from each other a child can still have a relationship with both of them. The show was also relatable. The moral problems that Pepper Ann face were problems that a lot of kids faced around the time and you can’t get too mad at her for always doing the wrong thing because she’s a kid she’s just doing what she thinks is right and just trying to get through life. Something that we try to do everyday. So the show was kind of like the female equivalent of Doug but in my opinion it was a much more enjoyable version with some good characters you could relate to and some good morals that were delivered rather well. Personally not one of my favorite Disneytoons but it was one I didn’t mind watching when it was on.
