After the success of Toy Story 2 which many would argue is better than Toy Story, Disney decided to capitalize on this franchise by creating a direct to video movie about Buzz Lightyear. In the world of Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear is a popular action figure so what do we do with popular action figures we make a show about them and that’s what they did with the show. Take a popular character from a popular franchise and make a show about him. Can you say cash-in?
The show just focused on the adventures of Buzz a space ranger who works for Star Command which keeps peace, order, and justice throughout the universe and fights against the evil Emperor Zurg. The show also introduced new characters who make up Team Lightyear. We have Mira a princess from another planet who has the ability to read minds and phase through objects who became a space ranger after being inspired by Buzz, Booster a former janitor of Star Command with incredible strength and a total fanboy of Buzz, and finally XR a robot who at first was emotionless but after being rebuilt he gained emotions and an eccentric personality. There’s really not that much to the show it has the same formula of all those superhero shows you use to watch growing up. Bad guy is threatening the galaxy, heroes have their own personal dilemma, they stop the bad guy and take care of their own personal dilemma. That’s the show in a nutshell. The one thing I will give this show credit is that they expanded on Buzz’s personality showing him as being a workaholic and someone who at times can be quite egoistical. The one thing I’m mad at this show is that it’s not done in the awesome Pixar CGI. Its classic Disney animation which isn’t bad but I think the show would have been better and stood out more if it had been done in CGI showing off Pixar’s creativity and how a CGI show should be done. Star Command was a cash-in on the Toy Story franchise but it didn’t hurt the series all that much and I do give them credit for trying to expand on Buzz Lightyear’s character. Personally I thought it was meh, didn’t really watch it all that much but from what I saw it wasn’t all that bad or harmful.
