Disney’s answer to Batman: The Animated Series. Gargoyles was the show that took Disney to a realm that nobody knew existed. The show focuses on a group of Gargoyles led by Goliath who guard a castle in medieval Scotland. They’re stone by day but at night they come alive and become the defenders of the castle protecting and fighting alongside humans. One day one of the humans betray the residents of the castle and kills a majority of the gargoyles within its walls. The remaining gargoyles soon take vengeance but are later turned to stone by a curse which keeps them frozen in stone until the castle they reside on rises on above the clouds. A century passes and a billionaire named Xanatos purchases the castle of the gargoyles and builds it on top of his New York skyscraper where the remaining 6 gargoyles come back to life and become the guardians of New York protecting it from criminals and supernatural forces that wish to harm the city as well as the world.
Talk about an epic show. The story was badass, the characters were badass, the villains were badass, the dark themes and arcs were badass, it was just badass. That’s all you can really say about this show. I’m trying to think of what I can say that the Nostalgia Critic hasn’t already said about this show he pretty much covered everything I would have touched on and then some. I guess the one thing I can say I really enjoyed about this series was the music. The music in this series was great. That opening theme still gives me goosebumps down my spine whenever I hear it. I would also like to say the voice of Keith David as Goliath was awesome as well as having half the cast of Star Trek: Next Generation voice a majority of the characters. This show was the most creative and darkest Disney has ever gotten with its shows. Seriously, this stuff could pass for something in the Marvel universe (and now that Disney owns Marvel they can bring them back and add them to the Marvel universe. Revival). As far as animation goes this was the best animated show at the time. The drawings were great, the characters designs looked amazing, and the city of the New York never looked darker and more beautiful. Gargoyles was a showed that showed us that Disney still had creative ideas up its sleeve and wasn’t afraid to venture into new territory. Unfortunately this would be the last time Disney ever did something creative, dark, and impressive as Gargoyles for a long time.
