Hello everyone. Justin here and welcome to the Otaku Mind where we are fresh off the heels of the 400th review. I still can’t believe I’ve come this far. Seriously, when I started Project Nitsuj I didn’t think I would ever make 400 reviews let alone 100. Yet, here we are. First off, I want to thank everyone who has been with me throughout this journey and continue to support me and the site. I can’t tell you enough how much it means to me. When I first started the site I took a huge risk on myself believing that I could stand on my own without riding off the success of other famous reviewers that I look up to. I’m proud to say that risk has paid off and I hope you will continue to support me and the site in the years to come as I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Now a few years ago when I reached 200 reviews, I made a list naming what I felt were my favorite and best reviews up until that point. Well I’ve done 200 reviews since then so why not make another list only this time we’ll be looking at projects 201-present. These are the reviews I had the most fun writing, going back and reading, and feel that they’re some of my best work. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, these are my picks for the Top 11 Reviews I’ve done from 201-400.
#11. The Top 11 Lists
Making a return from the last list, my Top 11 Lists. I always have fun making these lists and now that I’ve done some of the basic ones in the first 200 reviews, I’ve had to get a little more inventive with these lists and I’ve enjoyed exploring new lists I wouldn’t have thought up before. Hell, my Top 11 Reverse Trap Characters is my highest viewed blog on the site and two other top 11 lists are in the top 5 most viewed blogs. Probably the major reason why I love doing these lists so much is because they’re a good shout out to the Nostalgia Critic, one of the men who inspired me to become a reviewer. Yes, I know Channel Awesome has their controversy and I’m not here to pick sides or give my thoughts on it. All I know is this. One, Doug Walker is still entertaining in my eyes and two, it’s because of Channel Awesome that I discovered a number of reviewers and became inspired to become a reviewer myself.
#10. Diabolik Lovers More, Blood
If you still think Twilight is the worst thing to happen to vampires, you’re still right but this is a good close second. While I’m sure the actual game is alright, as an anime it sucks so much. While I got no pleasure watching it, I managed to find entertainment in writing about it and making fun of all the stupid choices and lack of personality the characters had throughout the anime. There was nothing good in this anime, but by God was it fun to come up with the jokes for this review.
#9. My Little Pony the Movie
I’m not a brony but I do see the appeal of the show and fandom. A short running joke I had in the series was Nitsuj being forced to review the MLP movies as a form of punishment by the justice system. It was fun and I got a good laugh from a few bronies out there who actually said they liked the reviews. When the new movie came out, I decided to take one final look at the MLP series as well as make all the fandoms laugh. Like I said before it’s easy to get jokes out of this show. I don’t know if it’s just me, but this show is just so easy to make fun of. Not in a bad way but in a good way which is what I was doing throughout the review. I actually did enjoy how they expanded on the world of Equestria and introduced new locations and characters that would work their way into the show, so points there. Now that the show is over I doubt I’ll do another MLP review, but the laughs and memories I had with writing the reviews were fun. I guess I’ll have to find another fandom to make fun of in a good way.
#8. Kino’s Journey 2017
A precious anime from my past that I was happy to see return. It’s really hard to say which version of Kino’s Journey is the best. The 2002 version is darker and more philosophical with its stories, but the 2017 version was more accessible and did a better job focusing on various cast members. This was a review I wasn’t sure if I was going to do or not. When I first watched the anime I was kind of going through a funk with my writing. I didn’t feel my jokes and comments had the same impact as they did in my previous reviews and I didn’t want to give a lackluster review for an anime I admired so much. When I watched the fifth episode all of a sudden I found myself writing my thoughts down and adding in jokes. It was like a rush of creativity just entered my mind and I felt recharged again. I was so recharged that I actually went back and watched the first 4 episodes again to write my thoughts about them and make sure I was truly out of my funk. Sure enough, the jokes and comments just started coming naturally to me and as I continued to watch the anime my confidence kept coming back and I soon found myself out of my funk entirely. This blog is a reminder to me to just relax, stay tranquilo, and not force myself so much.
#7. The King’s Avatar
The King’s Avatar was the first Chinese anime I watched and I loved every minute of it. This was such a cool anime to watch and write about. I forget how I found out about this anime, all I remember was watching the first episode and thinking, ‘Chinese VAs speak way too fast’. However, I got used to the fast talking and really found myself getting into the story of the anime as well as the characters and the action. I enjoyed each episode so much that each episode felt like they were only 15 minutes long when really they were 24 minutes. I was happy to finally review an anime outside of Japan and get introduced to a whole new country’s form of anime. While the series seems to be stuck in production purgatory I as well as many others are looking forward to when the second season finally gets released.
#6. Samurai Jack
Fun fact, originally Escaflowne was going to be my 300th review, but when Samurai Jack was announced I knew I had to make it the 300th review. The final season of Jack certainly did deliver and bought a somewhat satisfying end to Jack’s story. Aside from the good writing I did throughout this review this review featured one of my favorite jokes I’ve ever done on the show, the realization that Ashi was naked throughout half the show. I actually got that bit from Scrubs and thought it would be hilarious if I did something similar to that. Since this was the 300th review I wanted to make sure everyone I introduced into my blogs got a line or at least made an appearance even if it was minor. Good laughs, good writing, good times all around.
#5. Interspecies Reviewers
You knew I was going to put this on the list. This is probably the closest I’ll ever come to reviewing a hentai on the show. With all of the controversy surrounding this anime, I wanted to give my thoughts on the series. Is it a great anime? No. Is it entertaining and enjoyable? Yes, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can still have fun watching and praise an anime even if it’s not a masterpiece and focuses on a subject you may find inappropriate. I really did like the reviews of the brothels and how each character had an experience that was different from each other. The real selling point for this review was getting to work with the Jack Bros. and going all out with them. Like I said before I always love letting the cast of Project Nitsuj interact off each other and some of my favorite interactions happen with the Jack Bros. and their perverted humor. Every time I write for these guys I keep asking myself how far and perverted can I go with them and the answers I keep coming to always make me laugh. I knew I was going to have fun writing this review and adding the Jack Bros. only made this review all the more fun. Speaking of the Jack Bros.
#4. Keijo
Those booties be too fine! Another ecchi review involving the Jack Bros. where I think they’re better here than in Interspecies Reviewers. In this review I just felt that they kept the jokes coming and Nitsuj was playing the perfect straight man to all of them. The review also ends on another joke that pays homage to the Simpsons in one of my favorite scenes from the show. As far as the anime itself goes I really do feel that it was a solid series. Just like Interspecies it’s not what I would consider a great anime but it is an entertaining one. This anime has a lot of intense moments that you wouldn’t expect to see in a series like this, but the author manages to balance out both the intensity we see in sports anime and the over the top fanservice from ecchi anime. It was a good combination and it made good writing for a fun review with two characters I never get tired of working with.
#3. Batman vs TMNT
A childhood dream come true. If you were a kid in the 90s this was like the greatest crossover ever. All they needed was the Power Rangers and you would have had to rush me to the hospital. One of the few reviews to obtain my highest rating of a 10/10. Writing this review made me feel like a kid again as I saw my childhood icons team up together to deliver a fun and action-packed adventure from beginning to end. Many people were shocked that I gave it a 10/10 but here’s the deal. I gave the movie a 10/10 for different reasons. I gave Spirited Away a 10/10 for its amazing storytelling, characters, animation, and morals that no matter how old you are can apply to you. Batman vs TMNT gets a 10/10 because it managed to bring one of my childhood dreams to life and didn’t disappoint me. Now if only we could get a crossover between the Avengers and the Gargoyles. Come on Disney, make it happen.
#2. Lupin the Third Part IV
If you haven’t heard Lupin is my all-time favorite anime character and part IV may just be my favorite part in the Lupin series. It manages to bring Lupin to the current viewers, makes him relevant again, and introduce new and entertaining characters to the mix. While the over arcing story of the anime is a miss the episodic stories are great and make up for it. This was a review I really feel like I bought my A game to as each joke was a hit in my opinion, my thoughts were concise and to the point, and even managed to take a dive into the characters’ psyches which was something I normally never got a chance to do in the past and inspired me to start doing that more in future reviews. I won’t have a chance to do a Lupin review this year, but rest assured I’ll be making up for it next year.
And number one. . .
#1. Kuroko’s Basketball
The longest review I’ve done to date and the review that served as the debut for the site. A little bit of backstory into how this review came about. Before I created my own site, I tried to join another anime blogging site. Things started off well, I showed them some of my work where they liked what they saw and were more than happy to have me on the site. However, we ran into a few issues and I didn’t like how they didn’t get back with me in a timely manner and kept me in the dark on what was going on with these issues. I finally got tired of waiting for them and decided to create my own site where the rest is history. During the time I was waiting to post my work on their site, one of the editors there wanted to see me review a sports anime since up until that point I never really reviewed sports anime. I decided to humor him and did a review on Kuroko’s Basketball which combined two things I love, basketball and anime. To my surprise this wound up being one of my favorite reviews I ever did as not only was I reviewing this anime from a fan perspective but also from a basketball perspective. As someone who watches, plays, and coached basketball I really did feel like I knew what I was talking about and explaining it in a way that everyone who doesn’t know basketball would understand. To my surprise this review brought in a lot of new fans, earned me praise with longtime fans and showed me that I’ll be fine on my own.
And that’s my list. What reviews have I done so far are your favorites? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks again guys for all your support and time. I promise to keep making fun and entertaining reviews for you in the days to come. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
