Man this series caught fire fast in Japan and it’s slowly building momentum here in the states. Based off the popular mobile app Love Live was a series I never really got into. The idea is creative, creating an idol group created by the fans for the fans is a cool concept but as far as the animated series goes, meh.
Okay the story of the series focuses on a girl named Honoka who finds out her school is closing due to low enrollment. Feeling sad and wanting to help the school she discovers school idols where she gets the idea that if she and her friends become school idols it’ll be the interesting factor they need to get school enrollment up so she convinces her friends to become school idols with her and along the way other girls join their cause and they form the group Muse where they succeed in becoming school idols and saving their school.
Just like I said in my review there’s a lot going on in this anime. The forming of the group, saving the school, writing songs and performing live events but at the same time there’s really not that much happening character wise. We never get a chance to explore the lives of these girl, their relationships, or past. It really would have been nice to explore these characters seeing as how this is a very character driven series. The songs are great, I really did like them and the animation is very good in this series. The story of this anime really does start to get interesting near the end as we see them all handle their first major defeat and reflect on it wondering where they go next and what they want to do. Stuff like that where we focus on their characters and their interactions off each other is great. If only they found some way to work that into the anime earlier while also doing songs and advancing the story. This series got a 6.5 when it came out and I still stick by that score. I still haven’t watched the other animes but after looking back at the first season I think it might be worth checking them out. What do you guys think?
