Okami-san and Her Seven Companions was an anime I really admired for its creative setup. The whole premise of the show is that every character is based off a character from a classic fairytale or a famous Japanese folklore and we follow around a group of characters who do various odd jobs around the city for other characters. Our three main characters are Ryoko, her best friend Rinko, and Ryoshi who come from Little Red Riding Hood. Ryoshi confesses to Ryoko but rejects him saying he’s a coward but Rinko finding it cute that her best friend is admired so greatly by someone decides to help him out. Throughout the anime the three go around performing odd jobs with the relationship between Ryoko and Ryoshi growing and also learning about other characters and their pasts. For example, we see that Ryoko had a bad relationship with another boy that pretty much scarred her for life. They never tell us what happen but it’s hinted that he raped her and made her life a living hell to the point that she had to transfer to a new school just to get away from him and even had a hard time trusting other people after it.
Ryoshi is a character I just couldn’t bring myself to get behind. His cowardice behavior in the first episode pretty much ruined his character for me throughout the anime and I’m sorry no matter how many times they try to make the character look badass after the first episode by giving him some cool lines it’s too late you’ve killed the character for me. The other characters are decent as they each get their own episode to establish and develop their character but at the same time it doesn’t advance the plot of the story and once they have their episode they don’t contribute all that much to the anime and become an afterthought until climax of the series. The narrator for this series still annoys me to no end. I feel bad for saying that because the voice character is a good person but she just will not shut up. I mean she comments on everything and disrupts the story. I know it sounds hypocritical for me to be saying that seeing as how I do the same thing but give me some credit I’m commenting after every sentence I make. Some episodes do advance the story well but others just bring it to a halt. This is why I gave it a neutral score when I reviewed. The characters and setup are creative like said I like how all the characters are based off of fairytales and folklores and while the story shows promise they really don’t deliver with it all that much. I was hoping over the years my thoughts about the anime would get better and I would see it in a new light but no I would still give this anime a 5/10 if I was reviewing it today but I will say it is one of those animes that does need a second season as there’s plenty of things left unresolved and plenty of material to use for a second season. If I saw a second season I think I be able to get a better grasp on the anime and possibly give it a better score because in truth I hate giving animes 5/10.
