Project #253: Bungou Stray Dogs Part 2

(Shizuku): Yo! It’s your AI girls Shizuku and Mira and welcome to Project Nitsuj where we continue our look at Bungou Stray Dogs with the second season.

(Mira): The second season of Bungou Stray Dogs aired in the same year as the first season and aired 3 months after the first season ended.

(Shizuku): Why the short break you ask? Most likely because Bones was focusing all of their attention on Mob Psycho which aired during Bungou’s 3-month hiatus which makes sense. This was Bones’ biggest project that year. They were adapting one of the biggest mangas to come out in years so they had to get the whole team to make it as great as possible and it showed.

(Mira): Once Mob Psycho was done airing, Bungou returned to finish off a good year in terms of quality anime for Bones. Let’s continue our story and take a look at Bungou Stray Dogs.

Opening and Ending Theme

(Shizuku): Our opening this time is “Reason Living” by SCREEN Mode. As much as I praise the first opening and think it’s the far superior one, I still think this opening is awesome as well. The first 10 seconds of the song along with the dramatic lighting of the animation is great and really pulls you into the song. I especially love the violin used in the song. It’s rare to see an orchestra instrument used in a rock song and used correctly but when it’s done correctly it creates something amazing. The animation really matches up perfectly with the song. I love how it shows all the three factions, subtle hints of alliances, symbolism, and how some relationships between characters are similar to the relationship between other characters. First opening is still better in my opinion, but this is a good follow up. I can see why the boss liked this one.

(Mira): The ending is “Kaze ga Fuku Machi” by Luck Life. While the first ending was the better of the two, this ending is still good as well. I did like how it always started up at the end of each episode and what makes it even more interesting is that it’s a continuation of the previous ending. Now that we know about the relationship between Atsushi, Akutagawa, and Dazai this song carries more weight and meaning into their relationship. Both Atsuhsi and Akutagawa were inspired by Dazai and his words give them the courage to keep on fighting however they both use his words differently. Akutagawa uses them as a means to keep getting stronger, relying on no one and crushing anything in path while Atsushi uses them to help out others the same way Dazai helped him out in the past. Even though they follow different paths they both have a tremendous amount of respect for Dazai who they consider their sensei.

Episodes 13-16

(Shizuku): The new seasons starts off with a flashback and no not a clip show or Atsushi’s time at the horrible orphanage but instead a flashback into Dazai’s past with the Port Mafia (and this season already starts off on a good note). We see how Dazai was drink buddies with a guy named Ango who was part of the mafia’s intelligence division and Oda a low-ranking member of the mafia who has an ability called Flawless which allowed him to look 5 or 6 seconds into the future (Mira: Useful). Despite his exceptional skills he remained as the mafia’s handyman performing odd jobs here and there because apparently he doesn’t kill. The next day Oda gets called in by Ougai to investigate the disappearance of Ango who went missing last night after having a drink with Dazai and Oda. While Oda begins his investigation, on another side of town Dazai inspects the dead bodies of three mafia members who were killed after protecting one of their storages. Looking at the camera footage, Dazai comes to the conclusion that these men are trained mercenaries working for an organization called Mimic (Mira: Posers. Find your own thing). Back with Oda he goes to investigate Ango’s room where he discovers a small safe hidden in the air ducts. He then gets fired at by a sniper but thanks to his ability dodges the bullets in time and goes after the sniper where he gets cornered in an alleyway but gets saved by Dazai and his men (man I’m starting to think the anime should have just been about Dazai and his adventures with the Port Mafia. (Mira): It definitely shows Dazai in a different and more serious light). Dazai opens the safe and we see that a gun is inside the safe and not just any gun but the trademark gun of Mimic. Dazai pieces together that Ango ditched his meeting in Tokyo and went to another meeting which involved Mimic and then came to the bar to have a drink with Dazai and Oda in order to have an alibi.

The search for Ango continues in episode 14 where we see that Ango is being treated as a spy who has defected over to Mimic’s side (Judas) who come from Europe. Dazai lays out a trap for Mimic where his men manage to capture a few of their agents however Akutagawa kills them for trying to escape pissing Dazai off (now why on Earth would you piss that guy off? Stupid). Luckily, after investigating the dead bodies he manages to find a clue to the hideout of Mimic and informs Oda of his discovery. Oda arrives onto the scene before Dazai and his men where he enters the building and finds Ango tied to a chair with the place ready to explode (Mira: I don’t like this setup. Something’s wrong here). Oda and Ango get out safely where Ango reveals that he’s really a spy for the Port Mafia who was sent to infiltrate Mimic to find out what they were up to and who their boss was. Thanks to his efforts he finds out that the boss of Mimic is a guy named Gide who according to Ango is a very dangerous man (I’m a dangerous AI but you don’t see me going around and bragging about it. (Mira): You brag about being the Queen of bare knuckles and fight clubs everyday. You even had Enzio make a custom title belt to show off whenever you go into fights). As Oda and Ango prepare to escape a ball comes along their way where Oda stupidly touches it and gets poisoned (Mira: Dumb! That was dumb! Why would you pick up a ball after you escaped from a burning building? Don’t you find that whole setup suspicious?). As Oda falls to the ground in pain Ango gets picked up by black ops (so is he a double spy now or something?) but before leaving he does tell Oda that everything he said was true.

(Mira): At the start of episode 15 Oda gets the proper medical attention in time and lives thanks to Dazai. Once Oda is awake Dazai tells him the mafia and Mimic are at war with each other and are currently fighting each other in the museum (well that’s one way to get attendance up). We cut to the museum where Akutagawa is fighting and he comes face to face with Gide the leader of Mimic who sees through Akutagawa’s moves and beats him. Before Gide can kill him, Oda comes in to save him and carries him out like a child (Shizuku: And he did it so casually to, it’s kinda funny). Pissed off, Akutagawa actually tries to kill Oda because in truth he’s jealous that Dazai acknowledges Oda more than him (Shizuku: Well has he tried not being a whiny little bitch begging for attention? (Mira): No. (Shizuku): Than get back to me when he’s not like that). Oda easily takes him down and he comes face to face with Gide who has a similar ability like Oda and can see into the future (Shizuku: So we’re at a standstill). Gide opens up to Oda and says that he and the rest of Mimic are just soldiers looking for a place to die and now that he’s met Oda he believes that he can grant them their wish (Shizuku: As I figured, they’re the left over Nazis from Hellsing Ultimate. (Mira): No you didn’t, you just literally thought that up just now). But Oda says he won’t kill Gide because he doesn’t want to be a killer. If anything he would like nothing more than to quit the mafia, leave the city, and live in a house with a view of the ocean where he can live his dream of being a writer (that sounds lovely). In his mind writing is like telling the story of a person and in order to write a story you mustn’t kill another person (Shizuku: That makes no sense). Gide is shocked by this and decides to retreat for the time being but he vows to create a war where Oda will have no choice but to kill him. Later that night Dazai and Oda go to have a drink at their bar which I forgot to mention is called Lupin (Shizuku: It’s right between the Jigen gun shop, the Goemon dojo, and across the street from the Fujiko strip club) where they run into Ango who finally confesses that he’s actually a triple agent (he just chooses no side does he?). He really works for the government who wanted him to keep an eye on the mafia but once they got word that Mimic was heading towards Japan they wanted him to infiltrate their organization and see what they were up to (he was basically playing all sides of the field). Dazai tells him to leave out of respect for their friendship and he does leaving behind the photo they took together. In the final moments of the episode Oda goes to visit the kids he looks after at an orphanage where they all die in a car explosion thanks to Gide.

In episode 16 Oda goes out for revenge after receiving an invitation from Gide (Shizuku: It’s time for a good old fashion Nazi ass killing. (Mira): They’re not Nazis). Dazai tries to stop him but fails and even when Oda accidently runs into Ranpo who tells him not to go since he’ll die he still decides to go (he sees the death flag and chooses to go to it). As Oda fights his way through Mimic, Dazai goes to Ougai where we find out he was the mastermind behind everything (Shizuku: It was me Austin! It was me all along). He allowed Mimic to invade Yokohama which forced the government to act and go to him for help where he got the gifted operations permit as payment which completely rectifies all of the Port Mafia’s illegal activities (get out of jail free card). Back with Oda he finally reaches Gide where they counter each other using their special abilities until they decide to fight each other fairly without relying on their powers and wind up killing each other. Dazai arrives on the scene where Oda encourages Dazai to fight for good and protect others in order to find meaning in his life and he follows Oda’s advice and leaves the Port Mafia. He goes into hiding for 2 weeks and re-emerges in front of the government official asking for a job where he can help people and the government official directs him to the Armed Defense Agency.

Episodes 17-20

(Shizuku): Episode 17 returns us back to the present (Mira: Which is a little sad because I was starting to enjoy the more serious tone the series was going for) where we see Kyouka running an errand for the office by delivering some evidence to a judge. Atsushi follows her to make sure nothing goes bad and when she arrives security won’t let her through so she uses her stun gun to shut down the power box to the building, sneak past security, use her stun gun on a security guard, and finishes up by stunning the judge (he was coming right at her, you saw it right? (Mira): Oh yeah, definitely). As you would imagine she got in trouble for this but it gets cleared up. As the two eat on a bench an executive member of the Port Mafia named Kouyou who has the same power of Kyouka comes in to bring her back to the Port Mafia. Kyouka fights her and Kunikida and Kenji come in to back her up along with Atsushi when all of the sudden the Guild comes in and demolishes everyone. After the fight Atsushi and the others get healed up but Kyouka has gone missing and Yukichi tells them to come to their new secret base because a 3-way war is coming between them, the Port Mafia, and The Guild.

The Port Mafia strikes first in episode 18 by attacking the Guild’s luxury cruise liner the Zelda. Kejii gets caught by Nathaniel and Margaret members of the Guild where they try to kill him with one of his lemon bombs (Mira: I still can’t believe that’s a thing) but he’s immune to his own bombs (https://youtu.be/aI0euMFAWF8?t=57s). He let’s his lemon bombs rain down on the Zelda destroying the whole ship (so much for the Triforce of Wisdom) forcing Nathaniel and Margaret to go onto to land where they fight against Akutagawa who despite still recovering from his fight with Atsushi manages to defeat both of them. But the Mafia doesn’t stop there, they also focus on the Agency. Chuuya shows up saying the Mafia has lured two members of the Guild out with tempting bait for them to take. The bait, Naomi and Haruno another office member of the Agency who are not fighters, have no abilities and are hiding in a safe house in the middle of the forest for safety.

(Mira): At the start of episode 19 Naomi and Haruno try to escape by car but one of the members of the Guild cuts his neck open (I think I’m going to be sick), inserts a grape seed into the open wound, and grows a grape tree within him (that’s just nasty. (Shizuku): Grapes of Wrath! That has got to be the name of his power). With this power he can connect with all the trees in the area, control them, and find the girls. He finds them and captures them but Junichirou and Kunikida show up to fight where they get the girls to safety by having them hop on a train and then make their escape by having a truck hit the members of the Guild on the road (so much for public safety) and then they get arrested by the police. At a train stop Dazai and Atsushi wait for the train Naomi and Haruno are on where Dazai senses the mafia watching them and goes off to see what they want. It turns out they wanted to get him to safety because the mafia has released their most terrifying member a boy by the name of Q (Shizuku: No doubt a relative of L from Death Note) who’s powers are mind control. In the past Dazai captured him and since than Q developed a bit of an obsession with Dazai wanting to break him and everyone he cares about (Shizuku: That’s quite the hobby for a little boy). He mind controls Atsushi into attacking Naomi and Haruno but Dazai snaps him out of it and Q escapes promising to break him. The next day Dazai decides it’s time to unleash their secret weapon the Gifted Special Operations Division (GSOD) a unit of the government who specializes in handling all gifted related incidents in the country. We get to see Ango again but his return might be short lived as while he and Dazai are driving down the road they get hit by a car and it’s on Ango’s side. While that’s going on Atsushi gets approached by Francis the leader of the Guild and the one who put the bounty on Atsushi. Atsushi tries to take him down but has no luck. Just when he’s about to get captured Kyouka shows up to end the episode.

In episode 20 Kyouka gets Atsushi to safety and calls the cops (Shizuku: Dumb~) but the Guild got to them and now the police want to arrest Kyouka because she’s a serial killer. Kyouka grabs Atsushi and runs away where they get cornered by Francis and the Guild who capture Atsushi and take him aboard their flying fortress the Moby Dick (which is shaped like a whale and everything. Well they might as well go all the way with it). On this fortress Francis says the reason he wants Atsushi so much is because he’s after some book and apparently Atsushi is the key to finding it (Shizuku: What is it, a copy of Action Comics #1?). He also says he’s going to burn Yokohama down. The Guild managed to capture Q and combining his powers with the Grapes of Wrath user they’re going to cause anyone in the city who touches the trees to go crazy (clever plan). Once Francis removes the head on Q’s doll the whole city starts going crazy and Atsushi has a sky eye view from his prison cell. He manages to escape thanks to Lucy by letting his words reach her (man he knows how to charm girls doesn’t he?) and he parachutes out of the ship with Q’s doll hoping to get it to Dazai who can stop all this madness. He gets shot out of the sky but lands safely thanks to the tiger within him (how, I have no idea and I’m not going to question it. (Shizuku): Danger, it brings out the tiger in you). After running through the city while getting shot at from the sky he eventually meets back up with Dazai who nullifies Q’s powers and gets Atsushi underground where Atsushi says he has a plan to defeat the Guild but it’s going to require them to do something crazy (Shizuku: I’m listening), teaming up with the mafia (Shizuku: I’m all for that).

Episodes 21-24

At the start of episode 21 we get a little backstory into how Ougai became leader of the Port Mafia. The previous leader of the Port Mafia was becoming delirious due to illness and forcing everyone to fight aimlessly. Ougai, who was his doctor at the time knew that if this continued Yokohama would be destroyed so he took matters into his own hands and killed the leader with a scalpel (Shizuku: Man, the tools of a doctor ain’t to be messed with). Ougai soon took over the mafia with Dazai being a witness to his rising and everything. After that bit of information, we see Ougai and Yukichi meet in private to talk about a possible alliance but they really don’t get anywhere and go their separate ways. Later that night the Armed Agency sends Dazai to rescue Q from the Guild and Ougai decides to help by sending Chuuya (for one night only the most devastating team in the mafia are back together). They rescue Q however Dazai keeps Q’s doll as his insurance policy. They then fight against members of the Guild where Dazai shuts down the Grapes of Wrath however Lovecraft proves to be difficult as he doesn’t have a gift and is just some inhuman tentacle creature (Shizuku: He’s a freak). Chuuya activates corrupt mode a mode where he allows his powers to consume him and go on a rampage destroying everything (sounds like you Shizuku). This mode does have its disadvantages as Chuuya can’t control himself and his body can’t handle it. If he’s in the mode for too long he’ll die. Chuuya manages to defeat Lovecraft and he trusts Dazai with delivery his body to the rendezvous point.

The first half of episode 22 gives us one of the greatest match ups in the history of anime. Ranpo vs Poe (two masters of horrors going head to head). It turns out that Poe in this series is a detective just like Ranpo and 6 years ago the two faced off against each other where Ranpo defeated him (Shizuku: Because he is Japanese and Japan always wins). Now he wants revenge so he challenges Ranpo to solve the mystery of his latest murder novel with Akiko. Using his ability, Poe transports Ranpo and Akiko into his novel (what a cool ability. I was use that ability to go into my light novels. Knowing Nitsuj and the Jack Bros., they’re choices might not be appropriate for this blog). They quickly find that they can’t use their abilities (Shizuku: Well Akiko can’t. Ranpo never had one. (Mira): Don’t ruin it for him) and the first victim is the mansion’s caretaker and the story takes place in the middle of a snowstorm. Akiko tries to solve the case by using herself as bait but gets attacked and killed until Ranpo gets serious and solves the case in no time flat. The killer was him, the other characters had a motivation or reason for killing the caretaker, but Poe never gave a motivation for the protagonist that was Ranpo. So, through process of elimination the killer has to be him because Poe deliberately never gave him a motivation as opposed to the other characters. After Ranpo solves the case he takes his prize which is information on how to take down the Guild. Using this information, they plan to sneak Atsuhsi back into Moby Dick and have him take it down from within. He arrives on the Moby Dick and finds out from the controller of the ship that it’s going to be used as a bomb on Yokohama. In one hour the ship will crash onto the city and the Guild will wipe out anyone who remains by launching a full ground assault with all their members. The only way to stop the ship is to take control of the control room however Francis is guarding the control room so Atsushi will have to go through him if he wants to save the city. He rushes out and runs into Akutagawa (oh no! This is like the worst combination imaginable) who snuck aboard the ship to finish his business with Atsushi (Shizuku: Now is not the time).

(Shizuku): At the start of episode 23, it looks like we’re about to have a showdown between Atsushi and Akutagawa (a rematch for the ages) but Dazai says they don’t have time for this and instructs Atsushi to throw his head piece and have Akutagawa chase after it since he’s so desperate to get Dazai’s attention (Mira: He just can’t accept the fact that senpai won’t notice him). After that he goes to face Francis where he reveals his ability the Great Fitzgerald an ability that grants him physical strength equal to the money he spends (and he is loaded with a ton of money). He beats the crap out of Atsushi and Akutagawa comes in where instead of fighting Atsushi he instead attacks Francis. Soon the three battle throughout the ship (Mira: I feel so bad for that whale) all while Atsushi and Akutagawa call each other weak for having their drives for living (Mira: One lives for the approval to be alive. While the other seeks the approval of the person he respects the most. In the end they’re not so different. (Shizuku): I guess they’re like you and me. (Mira): Oh no, we’re totally different. I enjoy examining skulls, you enjoy smashing them. I like reading books. You like destroying books. The list goes on. You couldn’t find anyone more different than us and yet despite all these differences I still think of you as an irreplaceable friend I couldn’t live without. (Shizuku): Aww~.  I feel the same way. You’re a nerd but you’re my nerd. *Shizuku and Mira hug each other but unbeknownst to them Corbin has joined in on the hug* (Mira): What the hell is this? (Corbin): I thought I could join in on the moment as well. *Shizuku picks up Corbin and throws him out the window* I regret nothing~!). They eventually make it outside on top of the Moby Dick where Francis reveals that the reason he so desperately wants that book is because he wants to revive his daughter. They don’t go into much depth about it but there was an accident and he lost his daughter. His wife Zelda couldn’t accept the fact that their daughter was dead so she convinced herself that their daughter was studying abroad in London (she’s crazy). After Atsushi and Akutagawa decide to team up together to beat Francis they unleash their full power and manage to knock Francis back but he gets back up and unleashes all his wealth to crush them.

At the start of the final episode Atsushi and Akutagawa manage to pull it off and defeat Francis (you may have a fortune Franny, but those two are priceless. (Mira):. . .Wow. (Shizuku): Okay yeah that was bad. (Mira): Yin-Yang is going to kick your ass for that lame pun). They get the remote and stop Moby Dick from falling however somebody hacks into the device and keeps the whale descending. With no way to stop the whale everything seems lost until Kyouka comes in piloting the drone they imprisoned her on. Her plan is to crash the drone into the whale damaging it before it crashes into the city. The only downside is she can’t escape because she’s shackled to the ship so she’s gonna die. Atsushi tries to stop her but Akutagawa knocks him out and tosses him off the whale (thank you). Kyouka manages to save the city and Atsushi and Akutagawa are greeted by Dazai and Yukichi who reveal that Kyouka is alive thanks to the Yukichi’s ability. His ability gives everyone who is a member of the agency complete control of their powers. Since Kyouka wasn’t officially a member until this point she couldn’t control her powers. However, she passed her initiation test which was willing to sacrifice herself in order to save the city and others which made her an official member of the agency and allowed her to gain control of her powers. With the battle won everyone takes a sigh of relief and Akutagawa finally gets his wish (scene here: https://youtu.be/QsGr9_iwGpE). After a few days past, they have a welcoming party for Kyouka back at the office, we see a few Guild members go their separate ways, we get a shot of the next major villain, and we end with Dazai saying that Atsushi and Akutagawa’s skills will be important in the battle to come.

Final Thoughts

(Mira): And that was Bungou Stray Dogs. Let’s break this anime down. The first season is good in that establishes who the characters are, the villains, their relationships with each other, the setting, and giving us a good laugh out of the characters interactions off each other.

(Shizuku): The main problems with this season however is that the series feels the need to keep reminding us of Atsushi’s past. We get it, he had a traumatizing childhood, you don’t need to keep shoving it down our throats and applying it to everything he does. The more you keep doing that the more you make us care less about it. Another problem with the series in general is that they never explain where these special powers come from. How did they get them? Is it like X-Men where they’re just born with them? Can anybody have these special powers? Please explain this process.

(Mira): Despite these slip ups the first season is still good as is the second season but that season is where a lot of the problems with the anime comes into play. The season started off good by giving us a backstory on Dazai and his time with the Port Mafia. Oda was a very well done character and we found ourselves liking him a lot more than we thought we would and seeing the series take on a more serious tone with this tragic story was interesting and done excellently.

(Shizuku): The downsides begin after the 4 episodes when we return to the present. While the stuff they do in season 2 is good it’s rushed. A three way battle between these 3 factions could have been epic and exciting with lots of team ups, matches, surprises but the anime feels the need to rush through a lot of it and not explain a lot of things such as the book Francis is after. What is this book, where did it come from, and what’s Atsushi’s connection to it? The fights were also lackluster as well. While the fights they showed us are good such as Atsushi and Akutagawa teaming up to fight Francis, Dazai and Chuuya teaming up to fight members of the Guild, and the battle of wits between Ranpo and Poe was good (although this was also rushed through) the rest of the characters fade into the background and really don’t contribute all that much to the arc. Which is disappointing because their all good characters and seeing them go to waste like that is disappointing and makes me mad.

(Mira): Still, despite all these problems, there are a lot of good things about this anime that can’t be overlooked. The characters are all great. They each have their own unique personality and work off each other greatly. Dazai was hands down the best character in the series. He can go from being this whacky suicidal maniac, to your everyday womanizer, to a respectable senpai that you look up to and who inspires you to do great things. Next to Daizai, Atsushi is the next best character. He starts off as this character who thinks he has no purpose in the world but steadily starts to find his purpose and a place where he belongs. As he does, he gradually becomes a skilled fighter able to hold his own in a fight. Also, he and Kyouka make such a cute couple. Another character that everyone seems to like is Akutagawa and for good reason. Much like Atsushi he’s a guy trying to find his place in the world and his relationship with Dazai and Atsushi is great. He longs for Dazai’s praise and seeks to surpass Atsushi the one Dazai pays the most attention to.

(Shizuku): The animation may not be all that special but it looks great especially when it comes to the effects of everyone’s powers. Speaking of powers, I like how unique everyone’s powers are. These are some of the most creative powers I’ve seen and the fact that they all match up with the powers that come from the original work of the author’s they’re based off of is brilliant. The music is good, I like the various ranges it has throughout the anime and how it fits perfectly with each scene. The action scenes that they focus on were good. Choreography of each fight is well done and the way they play out is awesome. My favorite by far has to be Atsushi vs Akutagawa. It was the first time we ever saw Atsushi show his true power and gave us a hint that this guy is going to be something special in the future.

Final Score

(Mira): Well Shizuku, what’s the final score for this anime?

(Shizuku): I’m giving it a 7.5/10. How about you Mira?

(Mira): A 7.5 sounds good to me. This series truly is an underrated classic and really needs to be watched. The premise is interesting and the characters enjoyable. There’s already been plans laid out for a third season down the line and I look forward to seeing what surprises they have in store for us.

(Shizuku): Speaking of surprises, how’s this for a surpise?

*Nitsuj and the others come out and fire off poppers while screaming surprise*

(Mira): Woah!

*Mira is so shocked by this she falls out of her chair*

(Mira): What. . .what is this?

(Nitsuj): It’s your birthday silly. It was on November 8th that the Nitsuj of your timeline created you.

(Yin-Yang): We’ve been preparing this birthday surprise for weeks.

(Yume): And you certainly didn’t make it easy. Always keeping an eye on things, it’s pretty much impossible to do anything suspicious without you noticing.

(Shizuku): So they asked me to keep you distracted while they prepared for the party.

(Chibi Isis): Got you didn’t we Mi-chan?

*Isis and the Jack Bros. bring in the cake and drinks as Seras helps Mira up she sees the cake and all of her friends smiling around her that she can’t help but get a little teary eyed*

(Mira): Everyone. . .thank you!

*Mira says with a joyous smile on her face*
