Hello everyone. Nitsuj here and welcome to another side the blogs between the blogs. We are in the final week of May which means a majority of you out there are out of school or about to be out of school because it’s summer which means new anime is here which means it’s time once again for First Impressions where we take at the anime set to come out and decide if it’s worth watching or not. This past spring we got a number of good animes, my favorite being Carole and Tuesday which I urge everyone to check out. It’s done by Watanabe and his team who did Space Dandy, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Terror in Resonance. It’s arguably his best animated work. Other animes that I liked this past spring are We Never Learn, Bungou Stray Dogs, One Punch Man S2 and of course Attack on Titan which has delivered on the action and suspense. Now with that said, let’s give our first impressions on the summer anime of 2019.
Danmachi
Alright, so we start off with the second season of Danmachi. It was announced that a second season was on the way last year along with a movie as well. I know this anime has a lot of mixed opinions but personally I liked it and I’m looking forward to the second season. Watching it.
Dr. Stone
In keeping up with the success of turning their mangas into animes, Shonen Jump gives us Dr. Stone another popular series that deserves way more attention. Taking place in modern time, one day the whole world turns to stone thanks to a mysterious light. A thousand years past and two friends break out of their stone state and now explore the world to decide what to do next. Watching it.
Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou
An isekai anime where a classroom of high schoolers gets transported to another world to become heroes and save country. They all get special gear and good job classes except for Hajime a man with no ambitions and considered incompetent by his classmates. When he and his classmates are exploring a dungeon, he falls to the depths where he discovers something powerful. Watching it.
Vinland Saga
I think I’ve heard of this series before and it’s said to be a pretty badass series. It focuses on a Viking named Thorfinn whose father gets killed by a mercenary. Seeking revenge, Thorfinn joins the mercenary’s group to challenge him to a duel only to get caught in the middle of a war for the crowd of England. Watching it.
Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator
A spin off series from Toaru Majutsu no Index where focus on Accelerator the strongest esper in Academy City who must now protect a young girl from an organization who wants to use her powers for evil. Never got into Toaru Majutsu no Index so I’m skipping this series.
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2
Second season, not watching.
Fire Force
Here’s a series I’m very excited to see. From the man that gave us Soul Eater comes his latest work, Fire Force. In this alternate universe, fire brigades fight against this phenomenon known as spontaneous human combustion which turns people into living infernos called Infernals. Over the years however, some have gained the ability to manipulate flames while retaining their human form. We follow a fire brigader named Shinra who has a flame ability and joins a team of other flame users to extinguish fires and solve a mystery about the death of his family. Watching it.
Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Jikenbo: “Rail Zeppelin” Grace note
Somewhat of a spin off of the Fate/Zero series. El-Melloi aka Waver Velvet gets asked to claim his inheritance over Adra Castle. He goes there with his apprentice Gray where he finds out he has to compete in a game with other contestants in order to win the castle. I might watch this.
Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?
A comedy series about girls working out. I might watch it.
Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki desu ka?
Another isekai series where a guy gets transported into one of an RPG like fantasy world. The only downside is his doting mom gets transported into the game with him and she’s overpowered. That’s kinda of funny and something new. I think I’ll check this out.
Isekai Cheat Magician
Here’s some more isekai where two friends get transported into a fantasy world where the story is pretty basic. Both characters have high physical and magic skills and begin their new life in this new world. I’ll check it out and see where it goes.
Senki Zesshou Symphogear XV
Fifth season of Symphogear series. Not watching.
Maou-sama, Retry!
More isekai where a computer expert who plays as a Maou character online gets transported into the game and becomes his Maou character. Now he has deal with holy maidens and various nations out to kill him. Watching it.
Tejina Senpai
A comedy series revolving around a girl who practices magic but has stage fright. I might watch it.
Ensemble Stars!
Based off a game which focuses around boy idol groups at their private academy. Not really my cup of tea but I’m sure Isis and Mira will be interested in checking it out.
Kawaikereba Hentai demo Suki ni Natte Kuremasu ka?
It focuses on a guy named Kiryuu who finds a love letter addressed to him on the desk in his club room. Eager to finally get a girlfriend, he opens the letter only to find the message “I like you” with a pair of panties inside. Kiryuu narrows down the identity of his admirer to 4 girls who were helping him clean the club room that day. Since one of those girls is his sister it gets narrowed down to 3 people and he sets out on a quest to find out who the sender is. I might check this out.
Kanata no Astra
Here’s something for you space lovers out there. Taking place in the future where space travel is possible now, a group of high schoolers gets warped to the far side of the universe and are now 5012 lightyears away from home. They discovered an unmanned spaceship nearby and must now band together to find their way back home. Watching it.
Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo
Literature club girls want to lose their virginity. I have this scary feeling this is gonna end up like School Days. I’m going to watch this to see what happens.
Naka no Hito Genome [Jikkyouchuu]
This is another interesting title. It centers around a group of let’s players of different genres who get kidnapped and now have to participate in this strange game. This sounds interesting, I’ll check out the first few episodes and see what happens.
Given
Focuses on love and music between two men. I’m gonna check this out to see what happens.
Uchi no Ko no Tame Naraba, Ore wa Moshikashitara Maou mo Taoseru Kamo Shirenai
An adventurer named Dale becomes the adoptive father of a devil girl named Latina. I might watch it.
Granbelm
Two girls discover the lost magic of the world in the form of giant machine dolls known as Almanox. I might watch it.
Cop Craft
A buddy cop story about a detective and a magical girl from another world maintaining peace in a city filled with humans and beings from another world. I might check this out.
Sounan desu ka?
A comedy series about 4 girls who get stranded on an island after a plane crash. Not watching.
Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e
An alternate take on the American Civil War where the Union used black magic to create super soldiers known as Incarnates. With the Incarnates help, the Union won the Civil War but must now learn to find purpose in a time of peace or be hunted down by a beast hunter. Nancy, the daughter of an Incarnate begins hunting her hunter and discovers unsettling truths about the lives of the Incarnates. Sounds good. I’ll watch it.
Joshikousei no Mudazukai
Just focuses on the school life of friends who give each other strange nicknames. Not watching.
BEM
Kind of hard to sum this one up but it focuses on three deformed humans known as demon humans who desire to protect and become humans themselves. All of it takes place in a corrupt city where discrimination is as clear as day. I’m checking this out.
Kochoki: Wakaki Nobunaga
A new and bold take on Oda Nobunaga in his youth and his rivalry with his brother. Not watching.
Star Mu 3
Third season. Not watching.
Machikado Mazoku
A girl wakes up to discover she has demonic powers and gets ordered to kill a magical girl. I’m really not sure where they’re going with this and I’m not interested.
Try Knights
An anime series about Rugby. No doubt to build up excitement for the Rugby Cup coming to Japan. Not watching
Re:Stage! Dream Days♪
Lastly, an anime about school idols. Not watching.
Along with these animes we have Carole and Tuesday, Kono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shoujo YU-NO, and Kimetsu no Yaiba (another anime I’ve been enjoying) continuing into the summer.
Movies
We got some pretty major movies coming out this summer. The Konosuba movie, the 14th One Piece film titled Stampede, Ni no kuni, Violent Evergarden, and many more.
Final Thoughts
So that’s the summer lineup. We got some pretty good titles coming out. Most of these titles are ones I’ve never heard of or have heard little about but I’m excited for this lineup as it gives an opportunity to find something new to enjoy. I admit I became a huge fan of the Shield Hero after watching the anime and started to read The Promised Neverland and Kimetsu no Yaiba after watching the animes so hopefully these new titles will get me interested in the manga.
