(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj and welcome to the main event for Studio Trigger month. Over the last few weeks we’ve gained new perspectives on their more recent works that some have been split on only to discover that despite these anime’s flaws they’re still good.
(Mira and Shizuku): You’re welcome!
(Nitsuj): You didn’t change my perspective Shizuku, if anything I changed your perspective.
(Shizuku): Yes, and I allowed you to change it so you’re welcome.
(Nitsuj): How does your brain work?
(Shizuku): Like everyone else.
(Nitsuj): Today we’re taking look at their biggest anime next to Kill la Kill, Darling in the FRANXX.
(Mira): Announced in 2017, this anime along with Gridman was one of the projects Trigger announced that they were working on.
(Shizuku): Out of all the projects this was the one that everyone was excited for the most. It’s was a mecha anime, the mechas had unique designs, the characters looked cool, and the previews looked interesting.
(Nitsuj): Yep, everything about this anime just screamed amazing, except for tiny little thing, A-1 Pictures. That’s right, this anime was going to be a joint project between Trigger and A-1 Pictures now known as CloverWorks. Now while A-1 has produced a number of good animes the studio has been known to be lazy when it comes to animes they’re not 100% invested in. Still, everyone remained hopeful that Trigger’s passion and energy would be enough to keep them in line, and what was the end result for anime?
(Nitsuj, Mira, and Shizuku): Ummmmm~.
(Mira): It sucked.
(Shizuku): Kind of liked it.
(Nitsuj): Meh. There were a lot of mixed opinions about it and today we’re here to analyze what went wrong and if this anime is good or not. Let’s take a look at Darling in the FRANXX.
Opening and Ending Theme
(Shizuku): The opening is “KISS OF DEATH” by Mika Nakashima x Hyde. Holy crap was this opening awesome. The atmosphere it creates, the lyrics, the instruments, you just get lost in this song. It’s a very powerful and symbolic song of love and wondering if this is either right or wrong.
(Nitsuj): The ending is “XX:me” by Torikago which is basically the female VAs. This was an ending song a lot of people didn’t talk about, probably due to the fact that it gets overshadowed by opening but trust me when I say it’s a good song. The VAs work off each other, are easy to point out, and the lyrics that each one of them sing matches up with their character perfectly. There’s an emotional weight to the song that almost brings a tear to your eye as realize just how painful their lives are but how they keep moving forward trying to find meaning.
Episodes 1-4
(Mira): So the anime begins in the distant future (Nitsuj: Where we still don’t have that flying car we were promised. (Shizuku): And the land is as barren and empty as Mira’s dating life. (Mira): Up yours. Both of you) where the land is ruined and humanity is at war with these creatures known as Kyoryu. To survive, humanity has created cities known as plantations which they use to train and raise children to pilot these mechs known as FRANXX which are capable of fighting the Kyoryu. The kids are raised in an isolated environment where they have almost no knowledge of the outside world (something I’m sure Shizuku can attest to. (Shizuku): We are so going at it after this review) and are placed into teams of two (one male, one female) to pilot the FRANXX together (Nitsuj: Sounds like marriage). To these kids, piloting a FRANXX is their confirmation of knowing that they’re alive and if they can’t pilot them then they might as well be dead. We focus on one of these young pilots named Hiro voiced by Yūto Uemura (Atsushi from Bungou Stray Dogs) a child prodigy who is incompatible with his partner a girl named Naomi and thus can’t pilot a FRANXX. Because of this they’ll be taken off the plantation and most likely killed (well that seems like a waste. We’re trying to survive here. (Shizuku): They’re just trimming the fat). Hiro falls into a funk having lost his purpose in life until one day he meets a strange girl in the botanical garden swimming in the lake naked (scene here: https://youtu.be/rpPywWuV274, will this trope ever die? (Nitsuj): Nope. As long as men are horny, this trope will always exist). The girl goes by the name 02 voiced by Haruka Tomatsu (Asuna from SAO) and she’s known as the partner killer because anyone who partners up with her winds up dying. She takes an interest in Hiro but gets dragged away by her superiors who tell Hiro to stay away from her. The next day is graduation day for the young cadets and it’s also the day Hiro and Naomi are leaving the plantation. Naomi gets into her pod and takes off where it gets attacked and destroyed by Kyoryu (scene here: https://youtu.be/AQwMQloMNo0. (Shizuku): Well she didn’t stay long). 02 and her partner fight the Kyoryu who is trying to destroy the plantation but are no match for it and they take a heavy hit where 02 is badly injured and her partner is dead (Nitsuj: Man, a lot of dead bodies for a first episode. (Shizuku): Trimming the fat). 02 decides to fight alone but Hiro steps up and says he’ll become her partner. She pulls him in and kisses him resulting in the mech transforming (scene here: https://youtu.be/f_gUrAyZezc. (Nitsuj): And I swear to God the mech grew breasts and an ass. We have finally gotten to the point where we’re sexualizing mechs now). They manage to defeat the Kyoryu and it gets revealed that 02 is part Kyoryu (scene here: https://youtu.be/_1l-OIFO66g).
So in episode 2 we see how 02 is openly affectionate with Hiro which angers Ichigo another girl who is the leader of Hiro’s squad and has an obvious crush on him (scene here: https://youtu.be/lEVaj7-VVRA). She’s of course jealous of 02 and doesn’t want Hiro hanging around her (Shizuku: Step away from my man bitch) but 02 might just be Hiro’s only chance at piloting a FRANXX and even the council isn’t sure if they’ll allow Hiro to be her partner (she does have a bad record). Hiro gets a chance to prove himself in a mock battle with Ichigo volunteering as his partner against Miku and Zorome a guy who’s very competitive and can’t stand Hiro (he’s trying to compensate for something). They have their mock battle where we have to talk about the mechs. The controls on these mechs make no sense at all. The girls are bent over with their asses up in tight clothing (Nitsuj: Ohh~ you like to do it doggy style huh?) with the controls from the mech on their back and the male pilots right behind them (Shizuku: Only Japan would find a way to sexualize mechs). On top of that they make the whole connecting process pretty sexual as their minds are becoming one (scene here: https://youtu.be/zNFE4ieokSk. (Nitsuj): Still, with all the sexual undertones with the mechs, you have to admit these are some pretty cool looking mechs. Each one has their own design and fighting style which makes them all unique and matches up with the personality of the ones piloting them). The mock battle begins where as you would expect Hiro and Ichigo aren’t a match with each other. Even when Hiro tells Ichigo to kiss him like 02 did still nothing happens (he even says he felt nothing. (Nitsuj): That is the last thing you should say to a girl after she kisses you). Zorome and Miku have their problems as well as they lose trust in each other which severs the connection they have causing their mech to stop. In a fit of rage Ichigo pilots the FRANXX herself and takes them down along with her which results in a draw and Hiro’s future looking bad (scene here: https://youtu.be/czz84I9m5wM).
In episode 3 02 takes Hiro into the inner city of the plantation and talks to him about getting out of the city and seeing the world (Nitsuj: And that will only happen when he decides to stop being a wuss, grow a pair, and tell everyone that he’s flying with 02 and they’re not gonna stop him. Scene here: https://youtu.be/a49eYfwxWWE). The next day, the team gets tasked with taking out a klaxosaur down in the magma mines. While not as big as the one Hiro and 02 fought in the first episode it’s still a dangerous threat that they have to destroy. The team heads out where two of them stay behind because of partnership troubles (Shizuku: These kids really need to work on bonding with each other. Hell, Soul and Black Star had more of a bond than these guys and they were two idiots). They go down into them mines and kill the klaxosaur (barely) but their fighting attracts more of them and they get trapped down below (scene here: https://youtu.be/HBQs7jjUo0E). 02 tells them to let her and Hiro go down there and fight but the higher ups won’t let them (Nitsuj: Oh for God’s sake stop being assholes and let them save lives. You have no reason to stop them from fighting). Since they refuse to let Hiro go Mitsuru (the guy who had to stay behind because of partner issues) steps up and tries to use this chance to make 02 his and prove he’s better than Hiro (Shizuku: Does Hiro have a big penis while everyone else doesn’t? The guys here really do have an inferiority complex). Hiro wanting to save everyone tells 02 to fight with Mitsuru (scene here: https://youtu.be/x1_GiKoGkeg, did he just cuckold himself? I can’t help but feel he just cuckold himself. (Shizuku): I can’t help but wonder where you learned about cuckolding). So, Mitsuru and 02 save the others where they do a good job but 02 is just too much for him to handle and he actually gets himself hurt in the process (scene here: https://youtu.be/cUKHyyCTE3M. (Nitsuj): That girl is a succubus).
We get a very satisfying story in episode 4. We start with Mitsuru traumatized by his experience with 02 saying how she tried to drain him of everything all while having a smile on her face (Nitsuj: Boinnnng~ *giggles*. (Mira): You are such a man). He warns Hiro that if he rides with her he will die but Hiro is determined to ride with her again (Nitsuj: I’m sure he wants to ride her as well *Shizuku punches Nitsuj in the chest*) and Ichigo gives him her full support (Shizuku: Man, now she’s cuckolding herself. For kids who don’t know that much about romance they sure are in to some kinky stuff) as she realizes she needs to stop concerning herself with Hiro and focus on being a leader and leading her team otherwise they’re all going to die. Sometime later a wormlike klaxosaur appears outside the plantation and the team is sent out to face it where they can’t find the core because it’s too big and a second klaxosaur shows up. Back in the plantation 02 is being sent back to the frontlines (Shizuku: It’s your choice, we can’t force you) and they’re taking her by force (Shizuku: Or maybe we can. Scene here: https://youtu.be/ZZknvf-ZyVg). She leaves willingly (Shizuku: That a girl) but Hiro finally mans up and chases after her where he confesses that he was afraid of riding with her and is still afraid (Nitsuj: Really? Because two lightweights couldn’t handle her? Sure, one of them is dead and the other is most likely traumatized for life but don’t go blaming the candy shop for a cavity. (Mira): How do you come up with these metaphors? (Nitsuj): I had fun roommates in college). However, he’s not afraid of her because she’s not human but because he lacked the resolve to seize what he wanted (Nitsuj: And that’s riding 02 *Shizuku punches Nitsuj in the chest again*. (Shizuku): Enough with the innuendos and sexual references). He finishes up by saying he doesn’t care about flying a FRANXX all he cares about is riding with 02 and that’s all he needs. His confession reaches 02 (I think, they were pretty far away) and she fights her way past the guards to rejoin with Hiro where they break into their mech (scene here: https://youtu.be/pgCv3XGRI6M. *Shizuku punches Nitsuj in the chest again* (Nitsuj): I didn’t even say anything. (Shizuku): You were thinking it. (Nitsuj): . . .True) and fly out to help the others (scene here: https://youtu.be/lDVZ-De8ZuA) where they find out that the two klaxosaurs are actually one long worm (https://youtu.be/7N4vhRiJwFg). Through combined teamwork they manage to hold the worm down which allows Hiro and 02 to dive into the klaxosaur and destroy the core from within (scene here: https://youtu.be/RpzaOA2BNlI. (Nitsuj): Now that’s what I call. . . *Nitsuj, Mira, and Shizuku put on sunglasses* a messy climax, https://youtu.be/6YMPAH67f4o).
Episodes 5-8
(Nitsuj): At the start of episode 5 the plantation that Hiro and the others are on docks (or kisses as they call it) with another plantation to refuel their magma as the plantations run on magma energy. While the plantation is refueling there’s a high chance the klaxosaurs will attack so Hiro’s team is teaming up with the other plantation’s team should that happen. 02 finally moves into the dorm with Hiro and the others (scene here: https://youtu.be/Fk1YsqruDEU) where Goro (Ichigo’s partner) notices something wrong with Hiro. It gets revealed later that Hiro has some blue parasite growing on him most likely caused by riding 02 (Mira: I knew that girl was carrying something. That’s what you get not using protection). Goro finds out about the parasite and begs Hiro not to ride with 02 again but Hiro brushes him off and begs him not to tell the others (scene here: https://youtu.be/ROXrmUW0pvM, he’s addicted to her now). The group gets told that a large group of klaxosaurs is heading there way and will arrive the next day. The other plantation’s group doesn’t want to team up with 02 because she’s not a team player and disregards the lives of others without care. She even says she doesn’t care if Hiro dies which prompts Ichigo to slap her for treating Hiro like some toy (you want this Shizuku? (Shizuku): Sure. A toy she keeps hidden in drawer. Scene here: https://youtu.be/6sK8FGVrv5s). Other than that, this episode was pretty uneventful and just serves as build up for the next episode.
Episode 6 was awesome. The klaxosaurs have finally arrived and with them is a big blue and black box (Shizuku: Ohh~ they own a PS4. (Mira): I wonder how many GBs it has?). The other plantation’s squad is the first line of defense where they take on the smaller klaxosaurs using teamwork and coordination to trap klaxosaurs and finish them off with one effective strike. The second line of defense is Ichigo and the others where even though they have the better mechs their teamwork is way off (Mira: And that’s what makes this fight so enjoyable. The different dynamics of each team. The other plantation’s squad has better teamwork because they’re more experienced as opposed to the other squad who are still green and are still trying to find what works for them. They’re inexperienced and don’t know what their roles are on the team. Scene here: https://youtu.be/o8QZMzgC_u4). Eventually, they target the PS4 which transforms into a giant humanoid beast that almost kills them. Hiro and 02 enter the battle where Ichigo and the others create an opening for them to attack but they don’t strike the core deep enough and the beast transforms into a battering ram (woah, my PS4 doesn’t do that. (Shizuku): Must be in the next update) which sends Hiro and 02 flying to the docking pipe where it keeps bashing them into it again and again and again (Mira: Like a hammer to a nail). At this point Hiro has succumbed to his pain and accepts his death saying he’s satisfied (Shizuku: Fucking pussy! Get back up and finish what you started) until he sees that 02 is still fighting (Shizuku: See!? She has more balls than you) and gets back up with the blue ooze retreating from his body. He manages to calm 02 down and they work with the others to create another opening and kill the klaxosaur for sure this time (scene here: https://youtu.be/hrb7-brIkAY).
Episode 7 gives us the legendary beach episode (scene here: https://youtu.be/uT7fHjcI_os. (Mira): I did not expect to see this in the anime. (Nitsuj): I’m a little disappointed in 02’s swimsuit). While at the beach we find out that Hiro has officially become 02’s partner and both have been transferred to Ichigo’s team. On the beach we see the boys become infatuated with the girls in their swimsuits (Shizuku: That tends to happen when one goes to the beach) and become interested in knowing what a kiss is (scene here: https://youtu.be/oJdExWVm0bM. (Shizuku): Wait, are you telling me these kids don’t know about sex? (Mira): Pretty much. What did you expect? They were trained to be disposable soldiers. Why teach a disposable piece something they won’t have time to do when you can just teach them what you want them to do?). As time goes on, Mitsuru discovers an abandoned city and the team explores it where Kokoro discovers a book about childbirth which she takes back with her unbeknownst to everyone (scene here: https://youtu.be/ADs71TwrQ6U). Once they return to the beach there’s a BBQ and fire set up for them to eat and enjoy and once everyone falls asleep, Hiro and Ichigo go for a walk on the beach and see the shooting stars (scene here: https://youtu.be/RepWDjcSKyg. Now Ichigo, if you wanted to kiss him and confess your feelings, now is the time).
Episode 8 is another laidback episode. After the boys get caught ogling at the girls during a fight (scene here: https://youtu.be/fLoVx7sg7P0), a war of the sexes begins (ah, that takes me back to my early school days). The girls separate the dorm between the boys and the girls (Shizuku: Puberty hit them all hard and they have no idea how to handle it) with the boys deciding to use this to their advantage such as walking around half-naked (Mira: Something I wish you would take into consideration. (Nitsuj): My house my rules. I’ll walk around however I want. (Baron): Yeah, a man should be allowed to walk around in his house butt naked if he wants to. (Nitsuj): Exactly. (Mira): Wait, are you telling me you walk around your house naked. (Baron): Not all the time. Just on weekend nights. (Corbin): And occasionally your house when you’re all out or sleeping. (Shizuku): Nightmares) and taking over the mess hall (scene here: https://youtu.be/LfFlfzcpJBE). 02 also decides to spice things up by tricking the boys into the baths when the girls are in it and this causes all hell to break loose. 02 also steals their clothes and gets chased by Hiro who corners her on the roof and she throws all the clothes on him where he just laughs because he found this fun (https://youtu.be/hWk6JcheLMU. Scene here: https://youtu.be/GGSXuEiH7Zo). The adults finally come in and tell them to stop this and once they all go to their separate sides the boys realize that they might have been making the girls uncomfortable with their stares (hey it’s not your fault. Their battlesuits are so provocative) and the girls receive a pep talk from 02 who tells them to get over it because they’ll all die sooner or later. That’s when both sides decide to call a truce except for Miku who refuses to yield (Shizuku: Oh get over it you future tsundere) and runs away to one of the abandoned rooms where she finds a picture of the former squad who were all KIA. When the group finds her and sees the picture they realize that if they don’t get to know each other better they’ll end up just like the previous squad. Miku and Zorome finally make up (scene here: https://youtu.be/27jI1jz9RS4) and we end the episode with Hiro telling 02 to be more honest with him because he wants to get to know her more.
Episodes 9-12
(Shizuku): Episode 9 focuses on Goro as he realizes that he’s in love with Ichigo (alright. My advice, pursue her man. That way we can focus on everyone’s favorite couple Hiro and 02). On their next mission a klaxosaur that’s like a jellyfish cloud is heading towards the plantation and they have to destroy it. Ichigo and Goro get sucked into the klaxosaur but Goro ejects Ichigo to safety leaving only himself inside the klaxosaur where it’s only a matter of time before his life support system shuts down and in order to save the plantation he’ll have to activate the self-destruct sequence taking himself and the klaxosaur down (Nitsuj: He’s gonna die and he never got the chance to confess). To make matters worse the plantation plans to fire on the klaxosaur when it gets within range of the plantation meaning that Goro will die but 02 says there’s an entry point inside the klaxosaur which Ichigo can use to reach Goro. Deciding to trust 02, Ichigo and the others plan a rescue attempt where Ichigo manages to make it inside the klaxosaur and reach Goro just in time before he performed a kamikaze. They leave behind the self-destruct bomb and manage to escape just as the bomb goes off and kills the klaxosaur. With the mission complete, Goro confesses his love to Ichigo and even though there’s a good chance she may not feel that way about him, he’s happy knowing that he told her his feelings (scene here: https://youtu.be/uuGoERz-NNk. (Mira): He must feel 10 pounds lighter).
Episode 10 focuses on Zorome. The kids are granted entrance into the city (where the place looks like it’s made of gold. (Mira): And very lifeless for some reason. (Shizuku): Didn’t you hear me, the city is made of gold, who wants to live in a city made of gold?) and receive medals for all their hard work (scene here: https://youtu.be/0uJjdo8O3S0). On their way back, Zorome gets separated from the group and winds up stuck in the city where he takes a nasty fall (Nitsuj: Graceful as always that kid) and gets treated by an elderly lady. The two chat for a little bit where Zorome can’t shake the feeling that they’ve met before (scene here: https://youtu.be/dBX6YCpHIGs). We also see that her partner is confined to a Matrix like machine (https://youtu.be/qjBRNqwDPrU). He eventually gets picked up and bought back where after a few days he kinda forgets about her.
Episode 11 focuses on Mitsuru. We find out that as a kid the guy was completely obsessed with Hiro (to the point that I honestly think he’s secretly gay for Hiro) and the two made a vow that they would pilot a FRANXX together (Mira: So many flags are being waved with that sentence). But the two got sick when they were young and had to get an elixir injection where the chances of survival are only 15%. Both of them survived but something happened to Hiro where he forgot his promise to Mitsuru and everything. After this, Mitsuru changed drastically, Hiro’s betrayal hurt him so much that he closed himself off from everyone saying that he would never rely anyone ever again (Nitsuj: And in the process prove that he was better than Hiro). Back in the present, we see Mitsuru get sick again and even gets into an argument with his partner Ikuno who wants him to be honest with himself and acknowledge that he’s not seeking approval from the adults, he’s seeking approval from Hiro (Nitsuj: His man-crush and the man he desires to be) but Mitsuru won’t listen. Their guardians decide to do a partner shuffle where if the group want to they can change partners. To the shock of everyone, Kokoro asks to be Mitsuru’s partner (scene here: https://youtu.be/uSFY94DJkF4. The kind-hearted girl chooses the lone wolf. Why am I not surprised?). Nobody is more shocked than Futoshi who actually admits that he’s in love with Kokoro (Mira: Well love hurts) but accepts the change in partners to honor her wish (Nitsuj: I can’t help but feel that I’m watching an NTR scene). The new pilots are capable with each other and the plantation gets attacked by klaxosaurs who have combined to form one giant creature. The core is too deep within the klaxosaur for Hiro and 02 to get to, so there only option is to use Mitsuru and Kokoro’s cannon to expose the core. Mitsuru tries to do everything on his own again and almost gets him and Kokoro killed (scene here: https://youtu.be/bSP2eb2TDN4). Their mech shuts down on them and Kokoro finally talks to him where she says it’s okay to trust other people and while she can’t speak for the Hiro situation she says to think it over and decide if he should forgive him or not (scene here: https://youtu.be/gWoALA7lI30. (Mira): Please be honest with your feelings. I already got a doujin idea ready to sell). Mitsuru and Kokoro reconnect and they expose the core of the klaxosaur which allows Hiro and 02 to come in and destroy it (scene here: https://youtu.be/dwAler3pNN0). In the end they decide to keep the new teams as they are and while Mitsuru is still unsure if he’ll ever forgive Hiro (oh for God’s sake, you are such a baby) he’s ready to move forward with his life now understanding that these things happen and he can’t be tied down to them.
In episode 12 the group arrives at The Garden the place where they were all born and lived as kids (Nitsuj: Their parents were test tubes). They go to what’s known as The Lab where they’ll receive testing and are told to stay away from The Garden (if not, the meatgrinder with you). While at The Lab they meet the 9s, kids like them who are part of a special unit and they seem to know who 02 is since she used to be a part of their group. They’re pretty snobby as you would expect and look down on the group (Mira: Don’t think just because you’re good-looking we won’t punch you in your perfect face) but Ichigo keeps her cool and actually sticks up for 02 when the leader of the 9s makes fun of her. After their testing gets done, they sneak into The Garden where Hiro hopes to find Naomi and see how she’s doing, but he gets told that she’s not there and they get thrown out (https://youtu.be/G_-J9TdJTm0). Hiro stays behind and walks the grounds where he comes to a tree and starts to remember his scrambled past. As for the others, they get scolded for going to The Garden (they just wanted to see the pretty flow- *burst laughs* I’m sorry, I couldn’t say it. Those kids looked miserable) and as they leave, Ichigo gets stopped by the leader of the 9s who tells her to not trust 02 (Nitsuj: What makes you think she trusts her now?). He tells Ichigo that 02 is someone who devours men like no tomorrow (she’s a man eater that’s for sure) and just uses them to kill klaxosaurs all in the hope that if she kills enough, she’ll become human (*Mira takes out a bottle of apple cider and begins drinking it* (Nitsuj): What are you doing? (Mira): I’m trying to get drunk so I can comprehend the absurdity of her logic. (Shizuku): Save some for me). A few klaxosaurs appear outside The Garden and the group is tasked with taking them out. We see 02 is more bloodthirsty, uncontrollable, and her horns have grown slightly longer (Nitsuj: Must be her time of the month). She heads into the battle totally out of control, ignoring orders, and refusing to listen to Hiro even going as far as calling him a fodder (don’t know that word. (Mira): It means food. Specifically, dried hay for cattle). Even when Hiro confesses his love for her, she doesn’t calm down, all she cares about is becoming human (scenes here: https://youtu.be/jL2sqEgGy1Q and https://youtu.be/z2XKtkJwzhw). In another fight she goes completely out of control and tries to devour all of Hiro. This allows him to see the past where he remembers meeting a girl with red skin and blue blood, and this girl was 02 (scene here: https://youtu.be/blvWXfS3teA).
(Nitsuj): Holy shit, they’re childhood lovers.
(Shizuku): Very unexpected.
(Mira): Oh cut the shit talk, you knew this going to happen.
(Nitsuj): Huh?
(Mira): I mean why you see this coming? You’ve review over 400 animes and still can’t see a cliché from a mile away. I’m starting to think you’re the one who needs glasses instead of me.
(Nitsuj): How many shots of apple cider did she have?
(Shizuku): About 8. I’m cutting you off girl.
(Mira): Hands off cow tits! Why don’t I just zap you to India and parade you around the streets for everyone to worship you because of your cow tits.
*Mira slaps Shizuku in the chest*
(Shizuku): Ow! Alright, it’s on. I said I was gonna fight after the review but now seems a good time. I don’t care if she is drunk. I’m whooping your smart ass.
