Project #431: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun Part 2

(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. I’m back again with the twins of insanity to review the second half of Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun.

(Yin-Yang): The first was entertaining, and I’m sure the story will be picking up in the next half. So, let’s turn it over to Shizuku to start us off.

Episodes 11-13

(Shizuku): In the first half of episode 11, a new teacher named Robin has come to class to teach the students how to interact with their familiars. Iruma summons Kalego who is not at all happy with this, but his moral compass won’t allow him to ruin an educational lesson for the students, so he agrees to be an obedient familiar. We do learn one interesting fact about familiars such as how their form is a reflection of their summoner’s personality which means the reason Kalego looks so soft and fluffy is all because of Iruma’s innocent personality. As the lesson goes on Asomodeus and Sabro try to get their familiars to fight each other but Kalego stops them and reprimands Robin (who I forgot to mention missed the first day of school so he has no idea who Kalego is making this situation all the more funny) for his poor teaching about trust with a familiar. Kalego explains that familiars aren’t pets or partners, they’re dangerous beings who can turn violent if not properly watched. That’s why it’s important for summoners to both fear and respect their familiars to earn their trust. With that said, the lesson gets revised and everyone grows closer with their familiars (Yin-Yang: The same thing cannot be said for Kalego and Robin. Scene here: https://youtu.be/ZAVXKjlG34k). The second half of the episode goes by quick. It’s battler day or as we like to call it club day where clubs and organizations in the school are trying desperately to recruit first-year students. Asomodeus says that they should check this out in order to build relationships with upperclassmen who can boost their ranks. While Iruma still doesn’t have a goal, he decides that he’s going to focus on increasing his rank believing that he’ll find a goal as he goes along. He decides he wants to check out these battlers and he doesn’t have to go far because they’re coming for him whether he likes it or not.

In episode 12 Iruma and the others go to check out some battlers. We get a lot of various clubs (with Clara having fun in all of them) and even get a good laugh from Sabro who joins a cult where all they do is read books about the demon king and run theories on who they think the next demon king will be (Nitsuj: And he fits in perfectly. I can’t believe I’m saying this but Sabro is getting the most laughs out of me). Iruma even receives an invitation from Ameri to check out the student council where he’s just now discovering that Ameri is the president of the student council (Yin-Yang: What did he think she was? A girl noticing her kohai?). As fun and interesting as these clubs are, Iruma still can’t find a club that’s right for him (Nitsuj: Join the student council. Play your cards right and by next year you’ll be student council president). He also receives some ring tuning from Sullivan who gives the ring different modes so Iruma can use different levels of magic. At the end of the episode Iruma still hasn’t decided on the club but by the looks of it, it seems like he’s heading for either the student council or magical apparatus (the study of magical items) battler as the only member seems to be a kindred spirit with Iruma.

In episode 13 Iruma spends time with Kiriwo an upperclassman as well as the only member of the magical apparatus battler. He was born with a frail body and thus can’t use a lot of magic. His dream is to develop magical items that will allow him and other low-level demons to compete with other demons and put them on even ground. Iruma seems to form a good friendship with Kiriwo (Shizuku: The two are basically the same) and he decides to join the battler along with Asomodeus and Clara. In the second half of episode we meet the council of 13, a collection of the greatest heroes in the netherworld who maintain order. Sullivan is a member of the council and is one of the nominees to be the next demon king, but he doesn’t want it as he wants to be there and watch Iruma grow (scene here: https://youtu.be/fXM8FZej_hw). Sullivan soon gets arrested by Henri, Ameri’s dad, who saw a picture of Iruma and knows he’s human.

Episodes 14-16

(Yin-Yang): Episode 14 starts off with Sullivan getting taken in for questioning for illegally entering the human world. While they have no definitive proof that Iruma is human, the fact that Sullivan entered the human world is enough to take him in for questioning and at the worst time as it’s almost parent’s day which is on the same day as the Battler festival a festival where all the battlers show off their skills (scene here: https://youtu.be/RA1GgIpNx10). Iruma suggests the magical apparatus battler make fireworks something that the netherworld has never seen before (Nitsuj: Flowers in the night sky). They get to work making the gunpowder and even borrowing a manga from Ameri’s collection to get a better idea of what they’ll look like (it’s a shame Senku from Dr. Stone isn’t here. (Nitsuj): Yeah, he could have explained everything for them and us). Eventually, they managed to complete their project and even have a fun sleepover with each other in the club room where they have a pillow fight (scene here: https://youtu.be/SuHRkUuEY4g). Just when everything seems well it gets revealed that Kiriwo is a double-agent working with one of the council members who wants to destroy the school.

Nothing much to say about episode 15. We see everybody getting prepared for the Battler festival where the grand prize for the top battler club is members moving up a rank and the club leader moving up 2 ranks. We see Kiriwo plans to set up an explosion on the final night of the festival which will injure and kill a number of students (Nitsuj: Well that’ll definitely destroy the school). Iruma actually finds Kiriwo’s secret room where he hides his plan from Iruma (Shizuku: He’ll back out and realize his mistake at the last minute). At the end of the episode, it’s finally the day for the battler festival to begin.

Once again nothing much really happens in episode 16. The only thing notable is Kiriwo trapping everyone in the school (Nitsuj: Trapped in a school. What level of Hell is this!?).

Episodes 17-19

(Shizuku): Again, not much is happening in episode 17 (excuse me for a second. *Shizuku gets up and punches a hole in the wall* (Nitsuj): Hey! (Shizuku): You got insurance). We see Iruma quickly figure out that the barrier was set up by Kiriwo and decides to go and face him. With the help of Asomodeus and Clara he’s able to traverse the barrier maze quite easily. Meanwhile, the other students gather in the central plaza just like Kiriwo planned with the teachers and student council keeping everyone calm and entertained to not raise a panic. Kalego and Robin figure out that Kiriwo is behind this and alert all the teachers to be on the lookout for him.

Something finally happens in episode 18 (Yes! *Shizuku punches another hole in the wall* (Nitsuj): What the hell Shizuku?). Iruma finally confronts Kiriwo where he straight up reveals his plans to blow up the school. Kiriwo reveals how his family abandoned him because of his low magic levels. He was quickly forced out of his home and put into a school where he was picked on by everyone except for one student who he developed a friendship with. However, that friendship ended when a bunch of bullies (Yin-Yang: Or demullies as I like to call them. (Shizuku): Of course you do) threw her grandma’s earring into the river. Kiriwo tried to save them only to fail and he saw the look of despair on his friend’s face (Yin-Yang: Here’s where it gets messed up). Seeing his friend in despair awakened something within Kiriwo, something dark and disturbing. He liked it. He enjoyed seeing the look of despair upon his friends face, if anything, he got off on it (scene here: https://youtu.be/4zrJiPaX9qI. (Nitsuj): Wait, so does that mean all the times he got a nosebleed and coughed up blood, it was because. . .oh my God). Kiriwo began to seek others who shared his fetish and his search led him to Bablys where he met Baal who found Kiriwo’s behavior normal (Nitsuj: Are you taking the piss?). Baal doesn’t like how domesticated demons have become, he wants to go back to the old ways where everything was anarchy and chaos. In order to do this, he must first destroy the ranking system and the face of the ranking system is Babyls. Kiriwo admits that he led Iruma to this room because he wants to witness Iruma’s face of despair but instead of Iruma showing despair he instead shows determination to stop Kiriwo (Yin-Yang: If you’re talking about despair then Iruma’s got you beat kid. His whole life has been nothing but despair. Compared to him, Kiriwo might as well just be an ant on a mountain of honey). Iruma removes the firework ball from Kiriwo’s machine and with a smile on his face he jumps out of the window throwing the ball into the air and using up all of the demonic power stored in his ring to break through Kiriwo’s barrier and allow the fireworks to go off without killing anyone but instead leaving them awestruck at the sight of fireworks (scene here: https://youtu.be/p9liTes8iBM). Hell, even Kiriwo winds up saving Iruma from falling where he admits defeat and says Iruma is his natural enemy.

In the first half of episode 19 we see that while Iruma was foiling Kiriwo’s plans, Kalego and Robin managed to get a message to Sullivan explaining the situation going on at the school and he hurries back (Nitsuj: He could have left at anytime couldn’t he? (Yin-Yang): Yep. (Shizuku): That sounds about right). Sullivan returns just as the fireworks went off where we see they were a bit too powerful and caused a mini meteor shower. Before the meteors could hit the school (insurance won’t cover that), Sullivan stopped them. After that, all of the teachers apprehend Kiriwo who gives himself up easily. This leads us to the start of the episode where Iruma wakes up in the lap of Sullivan who flies him down to see the rest of the students who were amazed by the fireworks. In the second half of the episode, we go to the next day where we get to see the families of the students. Iruma and Asmodeus meet Clara’s family (minus her dad and older brother who I’m sure are the normal ones in this family. (Yin-Yang): What counts as normal for this family? Scene here: https://youtu.be/o8qzMlC2qjo). Next up is Asmodeus’s mom Amuryllis, Lord of Seduction (Nitsuj: And total MILF. Why are the moms in this anime so hot? Scene here: https://youtu.be/byJ8nDuWOSk). After this, Iruma spends the day with his family Sullivan and Opera in scenes that really do warm your heart as Iruma has come to see and accept Sullivan and Opera as his family (scene here: https://youtu.be/ThLyJhl-rI0). The episode ends on cliffhanger when them about to announce the best battlers.

Episodes 20-23

(Nitsuj): In a surprising twist, we see that Iruma’s battler didn’t win any of the awards (Shizuku: Wow, that is unexpected). However, Kalego takes the stage and recognizes Izuku’s battler for helping keep the students safe during the festival. Because of their efforts one of their members will go up a rank and the group chooses Izuku which means he’s now at rank 3 in the demon scale and is slowly but surely starting to stand out, the exact opposite of what he wanted to do (Yin-Yang: Or did he?). In the second half of the episode Iruma runs into Ameri’s dad, Henri, who’s in charge of the border patrol and responsible for keeping humans out of the netherworld. While he has suspicions that Iruma’s a human he has no concrete proof and believes that Sullivan is holding Iruma against his will (Shizuku: He kind of is. (Yin-Yang): Yeah, Iruma at this point might have Stockholm syndrome). Henri talks about how he once caught a human in the netherworld and rather than eat him he instead erased his mind and returned him to the human world (so that talk about you eating humans was fluff? (Shizuku): That, or demons are vegan). Ameri interrupts the conversation and calls Iruma a demon to cover for him and her dad takes an interest into why the two are so close with each other. Not wanting to expose her manga addiction, Ameri just says they talk together about love, relationships, and marriage (Yin-Yang: Oh Ameri you’re gonna get that boy killed). This of course shocks Henri so much that his glasses break multiple times (hey I didn’t know he could use King Crimson) and has to be taken to the infirmary (scene here: https://youtu.be/aRdq79YPCn4).

Episode 21 starts off with the introduction of Kuromu the demon idol who everyone loves. She’s giving an all-day all-night concert at a dome in order to relieve the stress of demons. This is a big deal as apparently when demons build up too much stress they become violent and revert back to their old ways (Yin-Yang: The ways that Liam Neeson from Taken would be proud of). In order to alleviate their stress levels things like video games, idols, and other forms of entertainment were introduced (scene here: https://youtu.be/FPY8sJIz3Qk. (Shizuku): And nobody questioned where this came from?). Iruma and his friends receive tickets to her concert and then Iruma’s luck continues when he gets selected to have a private meet and greet with Kuromu herself where he easily figures out that Kurumo is actually his classmate Keroli the snow woman (or girl in this case) who always gets mad whenever Iruma stands out (it’s not like he’s doing on purpose). We find out that in the past, Keroli always fell behind her siblings and was paid no attention to by her mom because of her normal magic and awkwardness. The only thing that Keroli had going for her was she was cute, like so cute that everyone would notice her, give her gifts, and wouldn’t get mad at her (Shizuku: You sure she’s not a succubus?). It turns out Keroli had the ability to counter malice and she decided to use this cuteness to her advantage and get revenge on her family. She would rise through the demon ranks and surpass her mom proving to her and everyone just how good she was. She hides her identity at school because she’s afraid Kurumo’s popularity will fall if everyone finds out and gets jealous of Iruma so much because he keeps stealing her attention (Yin-Yang: So? He’s at school where you admitted that you try not to stand out. You can’t get mad at a guy for getting attention you don’t try to get). Iruma actually admits that he’s jealous of Keroli for not being able to stick out and when he admits that he gets attention without meaning to, it pisses Keroli off. Keroli unleashes a huge surge of her powers which causes her to pass out and get a fever (scene here: https://youtu.be/kEXNOdC-41I).

In episode 22, with Keroli passed out and the next portion of the concert within an hour Iruma does whatever he can to stall for time. He gets the help of Asmodeus and Clara to perform on stage with him and Asmodeus crossdressing (scene here: https://youtu.be/kXmUWo7jTdk, it figures they would get him to crossdress. (Yin-Yang): I’m surprised it took them this long to do it). The plan works as the crowd is pleased and this was plenty of time for Keroli to recover and take the stage with Iruma and the others where they perform together and Keroli finally understands Iruma. He doesn’t stand out because he wants to, he stands out for other people. Also, we find out that the reason Keroli recovered so quickly was thanks to her mom (Shizuku: WHAT!?). Yep, it turns out her family watches all of her performances and when they found out what happened to her, they rushed to help her out proving that they do care for her (they’re just not good at emoting). The reason why they don’t show up to her concerts is because they get so worked up that they pass out putting their lives in danger (they’re snow people remember). In the end the concert is a huge success, Iruma and Keroli become unique friends, and Iruma gained a fandom (scene here: https://youtu.be/zGxT1-1vH4E. (Shizuku): If they only knew. Wait what am I saying? It might be worse if they knew).

In the final episode nothing major really happens. We just see how Iruma has become so well adjusted to the netherworld that nothing feels strange to him anymore. There’s also a cook off between Clara and Asmodeus to cheer up Iruma who they think is feeling down which ends in a draw (and it gave us an excuse to see Clara and her family sing again. Scene here: https://youtu.be/1nM7p675Ay0). I will say it is nice to see Iruma enjoying himself and living a fun and happy life with his friends. In the final moments of the episode we leave on a cliffhanger with the reveal of dark Iruma (scene here: https://youtu.be/HvTvJVxY2jM).

Final Thoughts

(Yin-Yang): Well Nitsuj, what did you think?

(Nitsuj): Honestly, I enjoyed this anime more than I originally thought I would. The anime is fun, simple, straight-forward, funny, and wholesome. While it’s purely a comedy they do a good job at showing how different the netherworld is from our world in creative ways, but also showing how our world and their world are the same. I did enjoy the various demon designs they have. While some are more creative than the others no two characters look alike and each character does seem to have their own personality. Iruma is an endearing lead. He is essentially a blue version of Izuku from My Hero Academia. He’s a nice kid with a good heart who just wants to live a normal life with the those close to him. While he doesn’t have any major goals as of right now, he’ll find them soon and his growth throughout the anime as someone who was afraid of everyone and everything around him to someone who has become comfortable in his surroundings really does speak volumes to Iruma’s personality into how he’s able to adapt to his surroundings and face whatever challenges come his way with his good nature. I like what they did with Asmodeus’s character. He starts off as this high-class prick looking down on everyone only to turn into Iruma’s fanboy who totally overexaggerates everything Iruma does, but they still let us know that he’s a talented demon with amazing skills. Clara is hands down the funniest character in this anime. She’s the perfect comedic foil to Asmodeus who plays the perfect straight man to her acts of craziness. She may be a little weird, but they also establish that she’s a smart girl who won’t take shortcuts to win people over and will instead use her own charm and talents to befriend people. The rest of the characters are also good as well such as Ameri, Kalego, Robin, Opera, Sullivan, and my personal favorite Sabro. The animation does look dated, but it is a good throwback to the animation of the early 2000s which gives me a sense of nostalgia watching it. As far as comedy goes, this series does have a good number of laughs throughout the anime and give you the feels in a few scenes. Anything you guys want to add?

(Shizuku): No I think you did a good job summing it up.

Final Thoughts

(Yin-Yang): I give this anime an 8/10.

(Shizuku): I’m also giving it an 8/10.

(Nitsuj): I give it a 7/10. Combining those scores we get 23/30 with the average score being 7.6 which going by our scale is a 7.5/10. This anime was definitely a fun watch and has really gotten me interested in the manga and what the next season will be about. If you’re looking for something fun to watch than check this anime out.
