Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. 2016 was a big year for Funimation. This was the year they became more involved with anime such as simulcasting animes as well as licensing them even before the first episode of the anime was released. Funimation was looking to make their names known in the anime industry and promote up and coming anime to the best of their abilities. They knew that anime was becoming big in America and wanted to make sure they were the front runners in this race for anime dominance. One of the first animes they supported to the best of their abilities was Dimension W. Written by Yuji Iwahara in 2011 and still continuing to this day, Dimension W was a series that Funimation was really pushing and promoting in 2016. They would show interviews, sit in meetings, and even have talks with the creator of the series as well. This was definitely a series that Funimation wanted to succeed. Probably all because they were part of the anime committee meaning they paid a good sum of money to get this anime made. The anime was produced by the up and coming new studio at the time Studio 3Hz (Princess Principal) but another studio that helped out was Orange (Beastars). Was this anime the hit that Funimation was hoping for? Let’s leave the Danger Zone and enter a new plane of existence. This is Dimension W.
Opening and Ending Theme
The opening is “Genesis” by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION. Hands down one of my favorite openings from 2016. When you have your main character dancing to the opening you know your song is fire. This opening is awesome. The music is great, the animation crisp and clean, and the action presented in the opening is on point and establishes how badass our main character is without using words. I still listen to this song on my drive to work. It gets me pumped every time I listen to it.
The ending is “Contrast” by Fo’xTails. At first, I didn’t really care for this, but as the anime went on, I found myself liking it. That drum and bass really won me over and the singer is good as well. This song actually did make me a fan of the band and I went to check out some of their other songs which were good. If you like rock music check these guys out.
Episodes 1-4
The anime begins in a not so distant future. We got flying cars, robots, humans going about their daily routine, and gas prices have gone up 400% (yeah, this sounds like the future). We focus on a car mechanic named Kyoma voiced by Daisuke Ono (Sinbad from Magi) receiving a call from a lady named Mary who has a job for him tonight at 9pm. We then get exposition into Dimension W a dimension flowing with infinite energy. In order to get this energy scientists created these special coils and then setup 60 places around the world to stabilize the energy so now everyone gets what I’m assuming is free energy (it’s like a dream come true). However, there are some people out there who use illegal coils to steal energy and thus it falls on special agents known as Collectors (the enemies of the world) to track them down and bring them to justice (really? You’re going to steal something that’s free to anyone? This is like stealing a candy bar when you yourself own a candy store). This is where Kyoma comes in, he’s one of these special agents tasked with finding people who use these illegal coils and bring them down. He goes to meet Mary who wants him to find the Won Bros. who have illegal coils and steal them for her. He manages to sneak into their hideout easily but one of the gang members captures a young girl named Mira voiced by Reina Ueda who just so happened to overhear their conversation about the illegal coils. Kyoma springs into action and takes out everyone with ease however one of the Won Bros. uses Mira as a hostage (well then sorry about your luck little lady. No offence but Kyoma looks like the kind of guy who doesn’t mind seeing someone get killed). But there doesn’t seem to be any need to worry as Mira is a robot and easily defeats the second Won brother (scene here: https://youtu.be/GRq7Iqoqe4o) and knocks out Kyoma for being an asshole (oh man she pimp slapped you good). He wakes up and meets Albert a security officer of the bureau who apprehends the gang but says the coils are gone. Kyoma figures out that Mira took them and easily tracks her down and captures her. While that’s going on, the bureau has cornered Dr. Yurizaki the founder of Telsca which supplies the world with energy (thanks for the free energy. We’ll put your picture next to the Monopoly Guy who gave us free parking). He went missing some time ago because the bureau killed his family and now he’s out for revenge. Albert explains that it was all just a misunderstanding and that those responsible for the death of his family have been punished (a misunderstanding? You don’t kill a man’s family over a misunderstanding. You guys did it on purpose) but he doesn’t care, so he activates this coil bomb which fries all the coils within the area including Mira. The blasts creates a mini blackhole (or something I’m not sure) which swallows him up and he dies. Kyoma thinking he can get money off of Mira takes her with him back to Mary who has her men check the body to find out that this body is very unique and special (I could have told you that). Once woken up she begs them to let her help them collect illegal coils to end the episode.
Episode 2 is where we get a good amount of exposition into the series. In the episode Mira becomes a collector and becomes Kyoma’s partner (buddy cop cliché at its finest). For the rest of the episode we focus on a character named Loser an art thief (who resembles Izanagi from Persona 4) who hasn’t stolen a single painting (time to find a new job). Despite countless failures he does have a following as people always come out to see him including Kyoma who is after his illegal coils. Loser easily breaks into the museum with Kyoma hot on his tail and he leaves Mira outside to find his illegal jammers. Kyoma manages to catch up to him where Loser reveals that Kyoma used to belong to this special ops group trained as an anti-coil group (I’m learning so much). Kyoma asks why Loser is doing all of this to which he replies it’s all for revenge since some people in the past killed his wife and pretty much destroyed his body as he lost his arms and legs and got his face practically burned off (man you got the Deadpool treatment. You are hideous to look at). Loser manages to make it to the art piece he’s trying to steal which contains a number coil which is a pretty rare coil in their world (and it’s the lucky number 7. Extra rare). The museum courier comes in with his robotic maids determined to stop Loser from achieving his goal and being the first guy to be looted by Loser (that would be embarrassing). His maids are using illegal coils and Kyoma easily takes them out (scene here: https://youtu.be/f8FAQE8lA1M). As the police are trying to get in the courier tries to hide the illegal coils but when he tries to remove the unstable coil he causes what’s known as a dimensional collapse and gets absorbed in the collapse where he somehow combines with the robots and becomes this large disfigured art piece (I call this. . .nightmare fuel). The cops come in where they say they’ll keep this whole mess a secret as they don’t want this to be known to the public. Kyoma gets let go, while Loser escapes and as for Mira she managed to find and collect all the jammers which were coiled pigeons and traces them back to Loser’s son who was doing the jamming (don’t drop your balls just yet kid). Loser comes to pick him up where Mira asks him if he knows where the illegal coils come from but he has no idea either.
In episode 3 Mira gets rewarded 6 million yen for the coil pigeons. She uses that money to buy a trailer to live in and furniture to go along with it. While settling in Kyoma heads out to ask about the number coils but before leaving, Mira asks him why he hates coils so much (they killed his family). He ignores her question and just drives off in his gasoline powered car which is rare in their world (hey when the price of gasoline goes up 400% you would abandon your car in a minute). While Mira is washing her trailer, she spots some kids playing around with the broken down cars that are stacked on top of each other (well that looks safe). They collapse and Mira tries to save them where she succeeds however, she herself got crushed and lost her head scarying the children. Back with Kyoma, he goes to this underground shop to ask this old man about the numbered coils. Apparently, these coils can tap into the unknown abyss of Dimension W. Regular coils can only scratch the surface of Dimension W and have limits, but the numbers pretty much have no limit. After hearing this information and getting a new cell phone he returns back to the gas station with the police on site. We find out that the kids didn’t tell the police about Mira being a robot however Kyoma is still in trouble for not properly taking care of his property and leaving dangerous stuff lying around. He gets released by a lady named Claire the COO of Tesla whose granddaughter happened to be one of the kids Mira saved. They pretty much have a conversation about nothing and Kyoma takes his leave where sometime later the kids stop by to check on Mira but she’s hesitant to go talk to them until Kyoma gives her a nice kick telling her not to overthink things. The episode ends at some mansion on the lake where a robot has just killed its master (oh shit! It’s I, Robot and Terminator all over again).
Okay things get weird and horrifying in episode 4. Kyoma and Mira are sent to Yasogami Lake to investigate the death of Shijuro Sakaki a famous horror writer who was killed by the robot at the end of episode 3. They check into the hotel on the lake where we meet a few of the guests such as Shijuro’s younger sister, another collector named Elizabeth (who has this gothic Lolita thing going for her), and some novel enthusiasts who are investigating the fog (I don’t know, I’m just going to assume they’re the bad guys). When Kyoma checks into his room and sees that Albert is there to greet him he throws him out the window from the third floor but Albert lands on his feet and is perfectly safe because just like Kyoma he too is a Beast of Grendel (scene here: https://youtu.be/TVcXUc6c5ds). The next day Kyoma puts Mira to work and has her investigate the study room of Shijuro by having her read all of his novels and scaring her greatly. While she does that, Kyoma investigates the area because apparently 21 years ago there was an accident that happened in the area in which a group of students got killed in an accident and people say their ghosts now haunt the area. In fact, some people believe it was a ghost that killed Shijuro (than we should have called the Ghostbusters). Kyoma goes to have a drink with Albert who tells him what really happened in the past (lots and lots of death. Where do I begin?). Apparently one of the students brought in a number coil for a trip project. Something went wrong and the coil went berserk and caused a flood killing all the students as well as washing the town away with everyone in it. When Tesla received word about this they covered up the incident and tried to track the coil down but every time they did their men would all be found dead. This is where the weirdness begins. Kyoma has Koorogi (Mary’s mechanic) reconstruct Shijuro’s death from the robot’s memories where we see Shijuro died because he was choked out by a ghost of one of the students who is stuck in Dimension W (man when I asked for free energy I didn’t think I would get a ghost problem). Back at the hotel Mira takes a bath (and I’m not gonna lie she does have a pretty hot body) when all of sudden she gets attacked by one of the people who died in the coil incident. She escapes but quickly finds herself in a world that strangely resembles the setting from one of Shijuro’s novels (wow, Dimension W made his novel a reality. Hopefully they don’t do Stephen King’s reality where we’re all in Maine). Her body won’t move and she soon gets captured. Kyoma arrives back at the hotel to see those fog investigators capture Shijuro’s little sister and escape into the fog. The episode ends with Mira tied up in chains and wearing nothing but a towel (will you stop trying to turn me on I’m doing a review here) and her being greeted by Shiro Kamiki who is actually Shijuro (the twists just keep on coming).
Episodes 5-8
Episode 5 is a rather disappointing episode because of how rushed it is. Kyoma and the others get attacked by water ghosts who can invade land because of the fog from the lake (it’s as if the anime just combined Scooby-Doo with Luigi’s Mansion). Kyoma discovers their weakness, natural spring water and figures out that Shijuro died because somebody replaced his water fountain with water from the lake. Back in the alternate dimension (which I like to call Dimension Hell) Mira is about to get ripped apart (and for some reason that towel still stays on her body. Logic means nothing in this anime). She escapes by overriding the world’s perception with her own logic of wanting to still be herself and returns back to the real world (which I like call Dimension Reality). She tells Kyoma that the coil is in the dam and they enter it where Kyoma has a short fight with Shiro who’s protecting the body of Enamori his friend and the girl he secretly loves. We get a series of flashbacks where we see some of the students from town were opposing the creation of the dam because it would damage their town but Shiro overhears some of the dam workers talking about discharging the water onto the town during a typhoon that would hit soon. Shiro rushes to tell the others but on his way back he sees Enamori by the roadside who just got done killing a journalist who was trying to rape her (damn girl! You got him right in the neck and everything). Shiro disposes of the body while Enamori goes to warn the others about the coming danger where she slips, falls, and hits her head on a rock where she passes out. After taking care of the body (why he did it I have no idea. Once the flood comes we can just say he died from it) Shiro drives along the road where he sees all his friends are stuck on the roof of a building crying out for help and Enamori is stuck in the garage getting the coil and slowly drowning. Not knowing who to save he jumps in where the coil activates for some reason and creates two realities based on his choices. The reality that Mira was in is the reality where Shiro saves his friends and leaves Enamori to die and they all get trapped in Dimension W living in their version of purgatory. In the other reality (which is our reality) Shiro saves Enamori leaving his friends to die. However, in this version Enamori gets amnesia from the head injury and Shiro feeling awful because he couldn’t save his friends decided to change his name and became an author (where he marketed off the deaths of his friends) pretending that Enamori was his sister Marisa who kept having nightmares of that other world. So in truth, Marisa is actually Enamori and is the one who has been serving as a bridge between the two realities because of the coil (if you’re confused I apologize but this episode is really bad. They really don’t do a good job explaining everything and they rush it out. This is why you shouldn’t try to combine sci-fi with the supernatural). Also, if you’re wondering about those guys who kidnapped Marisa last episode, they’re dead. Shiro killed them. Who were they, what were they after? No idea, let’s continue. After hearing all of this, the ghost of Shijuro and Shiro come face to face with each where Shijuro says that he too wanted to save that other world which is why he allowed everything to go on for so long (that and to get good material for his novels). Enamori shows up now that Shiro’s perception of her death has been shattered (they seriously should HAVE made this a 3-part episode) and she appears where Shiro apologizes to her for everything and they all decide to move on to the afterlife together. At the end Kyoma and Mira get the coil and leave, leaving the rest of the case up to the police where we get an M. Night Shyamalan twist and find out it was the maid the whole time who was following the orders of her dead father who was a worker for the dam that Shiro knocked out and left for dead all those years ago.
Episode 6 is a little hard to sit through. Why? Because Japan’s ignorance of the world and different races is on display here. In the episode a prince by the name of Salva from Africa comes to Japan to talk about robotic implants and with him is his little brother Lwai aka Loo (aka fanboy of Japan). Lwai sneaks away from his brother and security and goes out exploring on his own where he’s disappointed at what he sees. In his mind he was expecting Japan to be overflowing with ninjas and samurais (instead, all he sees are normal people with free energy. What a disappointment). Lwai comes across Kyoma and after watching him defeat one of his bodyguards with ease he decides to stick with him (and Kyoma has a second Tails following him). Lwai drags Kyoma to a shrine festival where he gets wet so Kyoma takes him to Tsubaki’s clothing store who just happens to be Kyoma’s sister (you have a sister? Who’s nice and normal?). We get a little more backstory about Kyoma such as he used to be married to a woman named Miyabi who died 5 years ago but due to an incident in the past. Kyoma really doesn’t remember her all that well and hasn’t even gone to her grave to pray. However, he tells Tsubaki that he’s done running away and will now start to remember his past. After Tsubaki’s assistants crossdress Lwai in a kimono (*Isis and Mira take pictures* (Mira): Score) Salva’s most trusted bodyguard Lasithi comes in to take Lwai back. Not wanting to cause anyone trouble he agrees to go back with her but before leaving Kyoma gives him a fan as a souvenir (aww, so you do care about kids) and he says that Lwai has an artificial body (yeah I kind of figured that). Later on, Lwai attacks Mary’s place and destroys her robot with ease leaving a letter with Mary about an open challenge to all collectors to gather at Easter Island in 7 days. Kyoma decides he’s going and as he’s preparing it begins to rain and he starts to remember his past a little.
In the first part of episode 7 we see some of Kyoma’s past and why he hates coils so much. In the past Kyoma had a girlfriend named Miyabi a sweet girl (sort of like Chibi only older and in college) who came down with an incurable illness that deteriorates all of her muscles. Within 5 years her whole body will shut down and she’ll die. Kyoma not accepting this wonders if they can put her in a body made entirely out of coils (oh so you want to make her Frankenstein huh? I can respect that). At the time the idea was being looked into by a scientist named Seira (the wife of Shido Yurizaki) so Kyoma begs her to use Miyabi as a test subject for her weird science experiment. She says yes but Kyoma has to join her husband’s special task force Grendel. For three years Kyoma served as a member of Grendel until the Easter Island incident where something went wrong, he lost his memories of the event, and only he and Al were the only people to survive. Also, during Miaybi’s surgery something went wrong with the coils and her head was lost (so thanks to coils Kyoma lost all of his memories and the girl he planned on marrying. A little cliché but still sad and heartbreaking). In the second half we return to the present where we find out why Salva wants to fight collectors on Easter Island. After the incident from 5 years ago the island pretty much became a dead island where nothing works however the cameras of New Tesla (now being run by Apple and the council of 30 evil men) saw some activity on the island and Salva wants to use the collectors to investigate the island because he doesn’t trust anyone. He believes it’s a new coil and he wants to get his hands on it. Collectors from all over the world gather at Salva’s mansion except for Kyoma and Mira who are getting the jump on everyone and being flown to the island by Al where Kyoma plans on using his new car (which is sexy. I normally don’t say that about a car but that car is sexy) to match speed with the other collectors. The episode ends with Salva’s ship reaching the island and making a crash landing.
Episode 8 starts with Salva’s backstory. When he was a child Salva was adopted by the king of his land to be the next heir to the throne since he and his wife had no son of their own. Salva’s homeland was flourishing with one of the coil towers being built in their land because it was rich with minerals used to build the coils however Salva (even at a young age) knew that in time the minerals would dry up and then they would be at the mercy of other kingdoms and countries. Salva knew he had to do something to protect the land that would be his someday but those plans would have to take a backseat as it turns out the king’s wife got pregnant and gave birth to Lwai who was named the new heir to the throne (wow, it’s like giving a kid ice cream and then smacking it out of his hand. That’s kind of what the king just did to Salva). Salva actually took the news rather well and instead decided that if he couldn’t be king he would instead create a world where Lwai could sit on top of the world with Salva there supporting him every step of the way. After the flashback, we return to the island where the collectors on Salva’s ship survived the crash as did Lwai however Salva and Lasithi are unconscious along with another collector who got attacked by this sphere of energy that seems to be attacking just men (bad touch! Bad touch). They manage to find a log cabin and leave Salva and Lasithi there for safety but this island shows us that no place is truly safe as machines come alive and try to kill people, people come back as zombies (how the hell did they manage to fit zombies into this show?), and there are these areas of nothingness where coils not only stop working but if a human passes through them they lose consciousness within seconds as well (this island is proving to be a fun and safe little place isn’t it?). Back with Kyoma and Mira they manage to save this anime’s version of the ice climbers (man the ice climbers really let themselves go didn’t they?) and as a thank you they dig a hole for them which leads to an underground road where they barely make it through the nothingness and run into Loser who’s also here on the island to collect the coil.
Episodes 9-12
In episode 9 Loser attacks Kyoma for not remembering his actions from the past. We see that he’s collected a few more number coils and has become pretty strong. He cuts off the road leaving Kyoma, Mira, and the Ice Climbers stranded and continues on ahead with Elizabeth who just happens to be his daughter (man apparently Loser wasn’t a loser in the custody battle). Before Kyoma can go after him that dark glowing sphere appears again and passes through Kyoma where he loses consciousness. Once he’s out cold we actually get a peek into his past as a soldier of Grendel. During his flashback we also see Salva’s past showing how a coup d’etat threatened to destroy his country. The coup d’etat was led by a man named Haruka a former student of Yurizaki who felt that scientists were being restricted by the execs at New Tesla. His goal was to kill all the execs and return New Tesla to the hands of scientists (who will use their science to take over the world). In order to stop this coup d’etat Salva and Lwai beg their father to let Salva take control of the army and he agrees to let Salva do it where he succeeds in capturing the traitors. However, tragedy struck him when one of the liberalists (that’s the best word I can use to describe this guy) tries to take a shot at Salva and misses. Salva orders a tank to fire at him but when it does Kawai comes from behind the liberalist and gets squashed by the collapsed building where he barely survives (and the rest of the story you can figure out yourself). Back with Kyoma we see him and the rest of Grendel track down Haruka to Easter Island where Loser was stationed there as a scientist who refused to join Haruka in his cause along with a few other scientists. Kyoma eventually figures out he’s in a memory and manages to break it where he finds out that the sphere is really Haruka who somehow fused with Dimension W after the incident which was apparently caused by Kyoma all those years ago (what did you do, Kyoma?). Haruka goes on to explain that Dimension W is actually a dimension of memories from everything that has ever existed (so Dimension W is the door that leads into the human mind? Interesting). Near the end of the episode we find out that Mira was actually one of the artificial bodies that was meant for Miyabi (knew it! I knew those two were connected somehow).
At the start of episode 10 a security bot tries to attack Kyoma but Mira fights it off with the Ice Climbers and removes its coil however she gets catapulted into the void but saved by Kyoma who thanks her for protecting him and even pats her on the head (he likes her). Kyoma now having his memories back tells the others that the scientists here were working on space development, not rockets or space travel (nah, that’s for babies) but for actually transporting stuff from one area of the world to another part of the world in an instant (we have something like that, it’s called email). In the past it’s hinted that Haruka tried to control this space development project but instead got absorbed by the sphere and became one with Dimension W. As they’re talking an injured Lwai comes in missing an arm (damn son, someone messed you up good). It turns K.K (Lwai’s bodyguard) was hired by someone to assassinate everyone who came to the island. He’s already taken control of Yuri’s mind and is now trying to kill Lwai. Kyoma and the others escape into the underground lab where we cut to Loser fighting against Chrysler (I wonder how many miles he gets to the gallon?) who is also using number coils and we find out that the coil everyone is after is a coil codenamed Genesis the ultimate coil said to be stronger than even the numbers (its power is only rivaled by coil codenamed Revelations). Kyoma and the others eventually come to an open space in the lab where K.K has Kyoma fight Doug one of his old comrades who was swallowed by the void and has pretty much become a zombie. Kyoma is forced to kill his old comrade while the others get washed down a drain where they come across a bright light. K.K runs into Lwai trying to get the jump on him but K.K sees through his movements and kills him (you bastard). Kyoma walks in to see this and goes into rage mode (which for the record is one of the best rage scenes I have ever seen). He takes down Yuri and pins K.K to a monitor where he’s about to kill him (https://youtu.be/qFYO43UCMYE) but Mira comes in to stop him (no let him have this) because Lwai is still alive, he had a spare body and uploaded his conscious into the new body (they come along way~ in terms of technology).
So at the start of episode 11 we find out that Lwai’s real body is still in Africa attached to a machine which allows him to put his subconscious into an artificial body using the coils (incredible). However, he has to be careful otherwise his subconscious could slip too far into Dimension W and be lost forever which is what was happening to Lwai last episode so in order to save himself he allowed himself to get killed by K.K (in order to wake up from the dream he had to die in the dream. Shades of Batman the animated series). Kyoma tells him how to wake up Salva and the other bounty hunter where they meet up with Kyoma and the others who show them where the bright light is which they believe will lead them to Genesis (and when it does Kyoma will show you how to dance). As they approach the light, security robots come to life and the bounty hunters hold them off with Lwai while Salva, Kyoma, Mira, and Lasithi go into the lab where they believe Genesis is. Once they arrive, they run into Loser and Elizabeth who defeated Chrysler and stole his numbered coil. He then uses the power of the coils to show everyone what happened in the past. In the past Loser along with his wife Sophia, Dr. Yurizaki, and Haruka were all working on this big project of possibilities for using Dimension W (it’s a lot of scientific talk but basically human teleportation). The only problem is anytime they try to transport a living creature it keeps dying (the blood was leaving a mess everywhere). So these 4 geniuses put their brains together to see if they could solve this problem with Haruka being the man working on the theory. Everything was going well until the executives deemed this project too dangerous and shut it down displeasing Haruka greatly who went mad believing that Yurizaki solved the theory himself and kept it to himself. After the flashback, the group receives a message from Haruka who is still alive however he’s trapped in another part of the lab which is separated from their dimension thanks to Kyoma. Haruka goes on to explain that he completed his theory and created Genesis however it wasn’t entirely completed yet so he took over the lab on Easter Island and forced Sophia to keep using the transporter on the scientists killing them off one by one until he could finally figure out what he was missing (dude, you are twisted as fuck). Sophia tried to commit double suicide with Haruka using the transporter and as she was doing this Kyoma and Grendel came in where Kyoma stole Genesis and got transported outside the lab without Genesis (so the key to finding Genesis lays somewhere in Kyoma’s mind). After hearing all of this Loser demands to know what happened to Sophia and we see that Haruka turned her into a tentacle monster and unleashes her upon them (I like what you’ve done with your hair Sophia).
In the final episode Loser tries to pull Haruka back over to their side using the numbered coils but fails and gets severely injured. Kyoma now having a good grasp on what happened in the past blames himself for the death of his comrades and what happened on the island and just basically shuts down on us. Mira encourages Kyoma to get back up and dives into his mind to show him the rest of his memories where we find out that while he was on the island Miyabi’s surgery was failing. Genesis showed Kyoma this and he tried to use Genesis to save her life but Miyabi said no and told him to let her go which he does and Genesis returned him back to Easter Island. Kyoma than wakes up where Mira has run away from him because her coil is going out of control (oh God we’re gonna kill the mascot of this series. Oh boo~, boo~ on you). She gets captured by Haruka where just when she’s about to sacrifice herself to save everyone Kyoma comes in to stop her and with the help of the others they tie up Haruka using some generators and we find out what happened to Genesis, Kyoma destroyed it (well seeing as how he didn’t need it nor did Miyabi need it why keep it around). Haruka gets crushed and goes into the sea of memories where he meets Yurizuki (scene here: https://youtu.be/qFYO43UCMYE) and just when Mira’s coil finally erupts with Kyoma right beside her instead of killing them they survive. Yurizuki gave Mira a new coil which according to him is her heart (when did we step into The Wizard of Oz?). They somehow get transported above the island where they’re about to fall to their deaths but Lwai saves them. In the end the void surrounding the island is gone so nature starts to restore itself, Loser dies from overusing the coils, and Kyoma finally calls Mira by her name (and nobody gets the money). Everybody returns back to their daily lives with Kyoma and Mira still partners and Collectors.
Final Thoughts
Dimension W while good and underrated doesn’t live up to the hype that Funimation was building up around it. I will say this about the anime, it was a breath of fresh air. It was something new and original at the time. Instead of following the norms of other animes, this anime instead sent us into a sci-fi future setting complete with flying cars, robots, and new ideas about energy. The two main characters are great. Kyoma is a badass who’s like an older smarter version of Mugen from Samurai Champloo and Mira is an adorable and lovable character. Both characters have good backstories and their dynamic was fun to watch. Kyoma can come off mean and cruel to Mira but deep down he does care for her, and Mira can trust Kyoma with her life. The animation is fluid and incorporates the CGI excellently. Not once does the CGI feel out of place or choppy, and the character designs and backgrounds look great. The action scenes with Kyoma are done really well. His movements are captured wonderfully and reminds me of Spike from Cowboy Bebop.
However, the anime suffers greatly with its story. The story can be choppy and rushed in a lot of places. We never get a chance to explore the world or understand the impact that coils had on the world as a whole and how it impacted other businesses like oil companies. We also never get a chance to see interesting side characters. Aside from Loser, none of the other side characters leave an impact on the audience and are quickly forgotten. They just appear to be there as a plot device to drive the story forward and nothing else. The music was also a hit and miss for me. Some music pieces are good and match up with the scene while others go unnoticed and fly over my head.
Final Score
Dimension W earns 6/10. It’s an okay anime that’s slightly underrated and worth checking out at least once. It’s a shame this anime never got a second season, so we’ll just have to settle for the manga to see what happens next. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
