I have to admit when I first heard about this show I thought it was stupid but after sitting down and watching a few of the episodes I have to admit it’s not as bad as I thought it was, it’s actually pretty good and clever. The show centers around the anthropomorphic adventures of a blue jay bird named Mordechai and his friend a raccoon named Rigby who are groundskeepers at a local park. But instead of doing their job they much rather slack off which often leads to surreal, extreme and often supernatural misadventures. The downside this series are the characters they’re not really all that interesting, outside of the two main characters they’re kind of forgetful and weird like their boss is a walking talking candy machine while the rest of the characters are animals. That’s just weird, if he had been human I would have been okay with this but a talking candy machine in world full of furries that’s just weird even for me. But despite the forgetful and weird characters there is an upside to this showed that turned it all around for me and make me like it.
What won me over for this show was the basic formula that me and a few of my friends from college figured out while watching the show. Start off with a regular everyday problem and then somewhere down the middle or near the end add in the supernatural. They do this for every single episode, in one episode Rigby gets jinxed by Mordechai and can’t speak so he tries to find a loophole which results in him accidently unleashing an army of destruction on the world and the only way to save the world is not the jinx to be broken. In another episode Mordechai and Rigby are trying to beat the high score on an arcade game and the high scorer turns out to be a floating head who sends the two to this alternate dimension when they get close to beating the score. And it works. I’m baffled by this, it really does work. It’s not the best formula but it certainly does keep you entertained in wanting to see how surreal they get for the most regular of situations and how each surreal event occurs because of it. While I still think the show is okay I will admit it’s not as bad as I originally thought it was gonna be and I would recommend at least giving it a good watch once to see what you think about it.
