Project #507: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun! S2 Part 2

(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Welcome to the second half of our review of season 2 of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun!

(Shizuku): When we last left the anime a lot happened in the first half. Ameri confirmed her feelings for Iruma. Iruma went through an evil cycle. The misfits went from background characters to secondary characters. Kalego has a friend named Balam and we got done with Judgment Day which means summer vacation is here. So let’s get started with the second half of this anime.

Epiaodes 12-13

(Yin-Yang): The second half of the anime starts with a good laugh by focusing on Kalego. By orders of Sullivan, Kalego has to do a home visit for all the students in the misfit class. This leads to some fun and whacky moments as it is cool to see what their home lives are like and we learn something new about them. For example, Asmodeus actually has younger sisters who are obsessed with him just like he’s obsessed with Iruma. When he goes to Clara’s house he takes one step in and then tries to leave before being forcefully dragged back into the house and treated to a song (Shizuku: As you would expect from this family. Scene here: https://youtu.be/0eh_p_ZPZsQ). Then he meets Urara, the eldest brother of the family who is the responsible one of his siblings (Nitsuj: And so polite and well-mannered that you honestly have to wonder if he was kidnapped from another family or something). We rush past the other students to get to Iruma’s visit where we get a big shock and find out that Opera actually went to school with Kalego. Opera was Kalego’s senpai and supposedly he bullied Kalego in the past (Nitsuj: That needs to be an OVA or spinoff pronto. Scene here: https://youtu.be/9EL95yz6_s4). One of the things I do like about these visits is that Kalego has a notebook dedicated to each student that he shares with their parents or guardians. This shows that despite finding the misfit class annoying and a bunch of troublemakers he does observe and care about them as a teacher and wants them to succeed in the future no matter what (Shizuku: Which is what a teacher should do).

In episode 13 summer vacation has begun and Iruma already has plans to go to Walter Park (think Disney Land only less evil) with his classmates. Going with him is Kalego, Balam and Opera who are acting as bodyguards for the group (Nitsuj: I think Opera just wanted to tag along and bully Kalego more. (Shizuku): Which to be fair is a good reason). We also have Ameri joining them as well (scene here: https://youtu.be/AEqKyBK7HeI). As they break off into groups and explore the park, Iruma runs into Ronove whose family owns the park (Shizuku: Oh shit, you’re the son of Walt Disney?). Ronove reveals that the park runs on mana which is taken from prisoners in the park’s basement (Nitsuj: Meh, still not as evil as Disney). We get a big shock by finding out that Kiriwo is a prisoner at the park and he’s contacted the Musashino group who are planning a prison break and the destruction of the park.

Episodes 14-18

(Nitsuj): Episode 14 returns to Iruma and the others where Iruma is truly enjoying himself. After getting separated from the others, Iruma finds himself lost in Kararagi Street, an illegal magical apparatuses black market filled with dangerous and shady people (Shizuku: And the park allows this place to exist? (Yin-Yang): Still not as bad as some of the Disney rumors I’ve heard). Naturally, Iruma is scared but he gets saved by a woman named Shiida. She works at the park behind the scenes so she’s not good at interacting with others, but Iruma and her manage to become friends. Eventually, everyone finds Iruma so all is right until the end of the episode where a group calling themselves the Six Fingers attacks the park. They’ve been hired by the Musashino group to free Kiriwo and destroy the park with Shiida being one of them. Also here are a few fun moments from the episode (scenes here: https://youtu.be/vRfPtADmd8c and https://youtu.be/5OIAR_aW6nE).

All hell breaks loose in episode 15 as the Six Fingers unleash 3 mythical beasts onto the park. We see Kalego and some students provide the laughs for us this episode as Kalego forces them to fight against one of the mythical beasts and he doesn’t help them (Yin-Yang: Not sure if he’s doing this to teach them or for his own sadistic amusement). Meanwhile, Iruma for the first time in his life is mad (Shizuku: As he should be. They were all having so much fun and then some assholes ruined it for them).

In episodes 16-18 the misfits fight back. We see each group take down the rampaging monsters, calm down the demons who were panicking during this whole mess, and even save a bunch of kids that were trapped under rumble. Pretty much everyone gets a chance to show off here (scenes here: https://youtu.be/G-ZJF9-mqvE and https://youtu.be/78oAQ8S4OrQ) including Iruma who actually took down the last monster single-handedly. While everyone was busy saving the theme park, the Six Fingers managed to free Kiriwo who is both shocked and delighted to see it was Iruma who thwarted his plans to destroy the park (Shizuku: You fucking freak). The group gets a parade in their honor for saving the park and later in the evening we get a scene with Iruma and Ameri talking to each other and making a promise to go off somewhere with just the two of them (scene here: https://youtu.be/suO1hyf1y2U. (Nitsuj): Yeah~, go Iruma! (Yin-Yang): Go Ameri). The next day Sullivan tells the news media that it was Iruma who saved the park and this puts the media on him like a pack of wolves scrapping for the last meat. Everyone decides to leave out the back way and since Iruma’s house will most likely be swarming with paparazzi, Clare says they can hide in her place (smart, no sensible person would go near that house).

Episodes 19-21

(Shizuku): So in episode 19 Iruma and Asmodeus enter the den of insanity (Yin-Yang: AKA Clara’s house). As you would expect the family is welcoming, kind, and insane. Sadly, the older brother is away at school (Nitsuj: No! Come back! You’re our lifeline to sanity). We get a family song (as is common with this family) and see Clara and Asmodeus have another cook off to earn Iruma’s praise where they go to hunt for the best ingredient in the forest. We see that the best ingredient is a monster that pretty much has all of the food groups making up its body (Nitsuj: That can’t be sanitary). At first the group attempts to fight it until Asmodeus makes the wise choice and decides to get everyone to safety as he knows he’s not strong enough to defeat such a beast. However, mama Valac is and she takes down the monster with one punch (power of anime moms is not to be underestimated).

In episode 20 Iruma and Ameri go on their date with each other (Everyone: Yay~). They go to an aquarium/water park (Nitsuj: They went to Seaworld?) where Ameri tries to make this the best date possible but her romantic plans don’t go the way they should. Despite things not going the way she wants them to, the two are still having fun and enjoying themselves. When one of the attractions attacks Iruma, Ameri saves him (scene here: https://youtu.be/oda164Y8blk) and injures her leg which leads to Iruma carrying her (Yin-Yang: And her heart went, doki-doki) ending the date on a high note (scene here: https://youtu.be/yVU39HRTra8).

In the final episode Iruma goes shopping with Sullivan and Opera for the next term. During their shopping spree Iruma asks how one becomes the demon lord and why Sullivan hasn’t taken up the job despite having the support of a lot of demons (Nitsuj: Because if he did I’m sure Iruma’s life would be in a constant state of embarrassment). We find out that to become the demon lord you need the absolute trust of the council of 13 who govern the Netherworld and that being demon king gives you absolute authority over it. That means, that the demon king can shape the Netherworld in whatever image they choose (Yin-Yang: The fact that the Netherworld looks like this and is so peaceful is because Derkila wants it to be like this which gives you a pretty good idea of what kind of demon he is). Sullivan doesn’t want the job because he knows he can’t live up to the level of Derkila and instead wants to find someone more suitable than him to carry on his legacy (scene here: https://youtu.be/1ErCOL_psCs). After this, they all head home, we get a quick recap of the season as the credits roll, and after the credits the misfits learn that they all must reach rank 4 by the end of the second term. Usually this is the borderline ranking you need in order to graduate so this is a very abnormal situation to say the least and if they all can’t reach rank 4 they’ll be forced out of the Royal One room.

Final Thoughts

(Nitsuj): And that’s the end of the second season. How was it? Well, honestly, I think this is a very fun and enjoyable season. While it doesn’t offer much in terms of story development, it excels greatly in the character development department.

(Shizuku): Agreed. The stuff with Dark Iruma was great as it was cool to see the normally kind and docile Iruma take on a more confident and cooler demeanor while still maintaining some of the elements that make him such a likable character. The development of Iruma and Ameri’s relationship. They’re a cute couple and it was nice to see Ameri realize her feelings for Iruma and take the steps to get closer to him. I don’t know if Iruma has the same feelings for her yet, but it’s obvious that he does like and respect her. We also got a chance to explore the other misfits and see that despite being such troublesome students they all have great talents. What easily could have just been thrown away characters in the background are now in the foreground with personalities and goals we can relate to and want to see them grow. Discovering the past between Opera and Kalego was hilarious. It’s funny to see the usually scary and in control Kalego scared of someone and it’s even more bizarre that Balam is his best friend.

(Yin-Yang): While the season doesn’t offer much in terms of story progression it doesn’t just outright throw it away. The stuff with Kiriwo escaping does setup a future confrontation between him and Iruma down the line and at the end with everyone having to become a rank 4 demon or risk losing the classroom they worked so hard to get is sure to lead to a lot of interesting and fun interaction between the characters and explore more of their background.

(Nitsuj): Other than these things there’s nothing much to say. The animation and music are still the same and the action scenes aren’t anything great, but hopefully they’ll get better as they’re building up to a major fight down the line. However, everyone does have unique abilities and they use them all in clever ways that match their characters.

Final Score

(Shizuku): My final score for this season is 8/10. Just as good as the first season.

(Yin-Yang): I’m giving it a 7.5/10. Still an entertaining season, but I wanted to see more story progression. (Nitsuj): I’m also giving it a 7.5/10. I found myself enjoying this season a little more than the first season. So if we combine these scores we get a 23/30 with an average of 7.6/10 around the same score as last season. An enjoyable season and a good follow up to the first season. With a third season already set to air in the future I’m excited to see what happens next for Iruma and his friends.
