Project #585: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2 Part 2

(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Last time, Tempest was attack by a kingdom, with Shion and many of the goblins dying in the process. In order to save his friends, Rimuru performs the ritual to become a demon lord and succeeds where he resurrects his allies and gets revenge on the kingdom who attacked them. With his demon lord status, Rimuru has gotten way stronger, obtained a new demon servant, and Veldora has returned. With the mastermind behind this attack still at large, can Rimuru and the others get payback? Let’s find out. This is the second half of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2.

Opening and Ending Theme

(Yume): The opening is “Like Flames” by MindaRyn. From singing covers on Youtube to singing openings for animes. A truly inspirational story. The song is good and matches the tone of the evitable face-off between Rimuru and Clayman that we all know is coming. I especially like the instrumental at the start of the song. It truly does let you know that things are about to get serious.

For the ending we have “Reincarnate” by Takuma Terashima. Takuma is back and he delivers a beautiful and quite meaningful song for our ending. It’s honestly a lot better than I remember it. This song isn’t Rimuru singing but rather Satoru singing and him reflecting on everything he’s been through and what he’s gained. When he came to this world he was alone but now he has a family and friends he wants to protect and a life he enjoys living. He couldn’t be happier.

Episodes 1-4

(Nitsuj): So the second half starts where we left off. Veldora has returned better than ever. During his time inside Rimuru he analyzed his memories to become familiar with manga and became a master shogi player. Not only that, but his ultimate skill Inquirer evolved into Faust. There’s also Rimuru who along with the ultimate skill Rapahael also has Veldora, Beelzebub, and Uriel giving him a total of 4 ultimate skills (Yume: That truly is the most powerful slime I’ve ever seen. (Nitsuj): I’ll say, he’s practically invincible). They return to Tempest where everyone bows before Veldora (scene here: https://youtu.be/4FBBDBEqkQg?si=2ugbaq9azfrzgYHT) and they celebrate their victory with a feast for the ages. We also learn that Shion received the unique skill, master chef, which means no matter how disguising her food looks, it’ll taste good no matter what (it’s a miracle, they won’t die). The next day they focus on their next objective, Clayman. Rimuru plans to announce to the whole world that he’s a demon lord, put Youm on the throne in Falmuth, keep the church in check, and save Carrion. As they talk, Rimuru receives a visit from Gazel and Fuze who arrive with reinforcements to help them fight (Yume: You missed that boat like a boy kissing a girl on a date). He also receives a visit from Elalude a representative of Thalion, the sorcerous dynasty. He is also the father of Eren (the female adventurer that came to the forest with Shizu) and attacks Rimuru while under the impression that he seduced her (Yume: Shockingly no. She’s one of the few girls who hasn’t fallen for him yet. Scene here: https://youtu.be/lIh9eLwNF9c?si=AtUyn3AXRwhp3PYU). They all want to take part in the talk on what Tempest will be doing next (they’re getting ready to take on a demon lord. These fights tend to get a little crazy).

Nothing much happens in episode 2. There’s a lot of political talk around Veldora, the Western church, Falmuth, what Tempest will do next and how they intend to explain the missing 20,000 soldiers of the church gone missing (Yume: They were raptured). The one major thing we get from this episode is finding out that Kazuya was the one who sold Rimuru out to Hinata and that Rimuru is caught up in his big plan (what he’s planning, I have no idea). At the end of the episode Ramiris arrives to warn them that Tempest is doomed to fall.

Still more talking in episode 3. They get done resolving all of their issues and Rimuru turns his attention to Clyaman. As for Ramiris, her warning doesn’t come up as she faints when she sees Veldora (scene here: https://youtu.be/1JXtS8ikC1E?si=XTq7_5NC5h72PijQ, I’m guessing they have a history together).

Episode 4 returns to Ramiris and why she’s here (aside from discovering manga and falling in love with it). She tells Rimuru that Clayman has set in motion, Walpurgis, a banquet of the demon lords. Usually when the demon lords get together a great war follows. Clayman has called for Walpurgis under the pretext that Rimuru killed Myulan and Carrion broke their non-aggression pact by informing Rimuru of her being a majin. Clayman’s ultimate goal seems to be to control the forest (Yume: It has been turning a lot of heads recently) and Euranzia in order to awaken as a true demon lord. Walpurgis will take place in 3 days, but Rimuru doesn’t seem to be scared all that much as he expected this move from Clayman sooner or later (scene here: https://youtu.be/mOIf_BaEAlk?si=wtYBaaNiLBSDpScG). That night, everyone relaxes with a banquet (man, these guys have more parties than the Strawhat crew). At the banquet they find out from Suoh that Clayman is planning to send in his army and slaughter the refugees in Euranzia in order to get the numbers he needs to evolve into a true demon lord.

Episodes 5-8

In episode 5 Rimuru make plans to stop Clayman from killing the refugees of Euranzia. Thanks to Raphael, Rimuru has created a new teleportation spell where he can safely transport a vast number of people without harm coming to them. He quickly gets to work using this spell to transport the refugees to Tempest for safety (it’s hard to believe this place was once just a village of goblins). Rimuru also decides to attend Walpurgis with Shion and Ranga as his plus two (scene here: https://youtu.be/TsWzdR0Wpdc?si=Mtib-N4RoOfZmIei). As the episode ends Rimuru teleports the Tempest army led by Benimaru to face Clayman’s army and give them some much-deserved payback.

More talking in episode 6 (stop torturing me). We do get a chance to focus on some of the more powerful demon lords who talk about Rimuru and see how some of them fell for his lie about Veldora’s resurrection thanks to the soldiers of Falmuth who accidentally broke his seal. However, there are some (including Leon) who believe that it was really Rimuru who broke the seal and that makes him interesting. We also see how Clayman managed to take control of Milim using some necklace that turns her into a mindless puppet and how many of the other demon lords look down on Clayman (Yume: Can’t imagine why). In their eyes he’s a small-time demon lord whose ambitions will be the death of him.

(Yume): Episodes 7-8 give us the fight we’ve been waiting for as Benimaru leads the forces of Tempest to fight Clayman’s army. There’s a lot of cool fight scenes with the best being Benimaru where it gets confirmed that his power is on the same level as a demon lord. So if Benimaru wanted to he could go off on his own and establish his own kingdom (Nitsuj: Oh shit, Benimaru’s a beast. Scenes here: https://youtu.be/3JTs44lknTU?si=mMDom3or5Ir9ljPW, https://youtu.be/6VWyQ05HGaU?si=Jdge6PJikdBSinUF, https://youtu.be/GkeeRILcoLo?si=KxVdr2u-Zm_DuW4E, and https://youtu.be/Zs-9CTI1gwQ?si=FZ_33E5wjMrkD2_v).

Episodes 9-12

Episode 9 returns us to Rimuru. While the others were out fighting, Rimuru was getting ready for Walpurgis. While that’s going on, Souei, Shuna and Hakurou make their way to Clayman’s castle (attack while he’s away. My idea for a good prank). They fall into a trap and get surrounded by one of Clayman’s top guys, Adalman, the White King who commands the undead. The group gets surrounded by the undead army and we finally get to see Shuna show off. You see for a while now Shuna has been very angry (Nitsuj: Behind that smile is a very pissed off woman). The attack on Tempest and her friends has been weighing on her for quite some time and she hasn’t had a chance to really release her rage (what we have here is a good opportunity for her to go all out). Shuna easily defeats Adalman and his army, even teaching him the secret to using holy magic despite being an undead (scene here: https://youtu.be/7paoI0jAK3c?si=LSR2bGPM9i81dkNH). Once Adalman is defeated rather than passing on, he and his army decide to stay swearing loyalty to Shuna. Meanwhile, Rimuru finally makes it to Waplurgis. He meets a few of the other demon lords including Leon who’s interested in Rimuru and invites him to his castle so that they can discuss the Shizu situation, assuming he survives (I’m sure Rimuru could take on Clayman, but if he has to fight everyone else then this situation is going to get dicey). Clayman arrives with Milim and even hits her (Nitsuj: He really does have a death wish doesn’t he).

Walpurgis finally begins in episode 10. We get a formal introduction to all the demon lords (Nitsuj: Alright, I’ll say it, I hate all of you. (Yume): You know, I just realized something, what exactly is the point of this meeting? I mean, what are they going to talk about? (Nitsuj): Good question). So the meeting starts with Clayman giving this long winded speech who talks about Carrion provoking Rimuru to declare himself a demon lord and instigating Falmuth to attack Tempest so that Rimuru could become one promising to back him up. Clayman claims this violated the pact between demon lords and led to Rimuru killing Mjurran (https://youtu.be/cDQk4lGSEJQ?t=6). This forced Clayman’s hand, and he sought revenge against Rimuru as well as Carrion who were trying to kill him. This soon led to him teaming up with Milim and them working together to take down Rimuru and Carrion (Nitsuj: My God, what does the scouter say about his BS level, https://youtu.be/SiMHTK15Pik?t=9). With Carrion now presumed dead, Clayman is moving on to Rimuru who demands that he’d be purged (https://youtu.be/_6TX4-xKgpU). Rimuru finally gets to speak where he denies all of this saying that Mjurran is still alive (and helplessly in love) and shows everyone a video of Clayman’s army being destroyed. The cracks in Clayman’s story begin to show and it’s decided that Rimuru and Clayman are going to fight where if Rimuru wins he will be acknowledged as a demon lord. Clayman still thinking Rimuru is just barrowing Veldora’s authority accepts and he even gets Milim involved as well (Nitsuj: Feed her some honey, that’ll wake her up) with his other attendants. Shion and Ranga step in to fight as well with Beretta joining in later. Milim and Rimuru fight where we see him steadily trying to wear down Milim, but even that’s not enough to slow her down. Just when Milim is about to land a clean strike, Veldora appears (scene here: https://youtu.be/iZzbV1PlT7E?si=TONwMfgLuqdRgnOQ).

At the start of episode 11 we find out that Veldora appeared because he wants to know what happens next in a manga that he’s reading (Nitsuj: Hopefully it’s not Highschool of the Dead cause I have some bad news for you). Rimuru gets Veldora to fight against Milim where we find out that the two are actually related. Milim is the daughter of Veldora’s older brother (I have so many questions). While Veldora entertains Milim, Rimuru goes to check on Ranga who seems to have his fight against a demon fox under control, but it gets revealed that the fox is suffering under Clayman’s control and is begging for help. Rimuru manages to undo the spell binding it to Clayman and Ranga takes it to safety. We see Beretta managed to win her fight (Nitsuj: She fucking massacred the other golem) and then we return to Veldora and Milim where Velodra is using a variety of moves from Street Fighter (stop spamming Hadouken), Naruto, and DBZ (scene here: (scene here: https://youtu.be/KgGa8dUmHUA?si=D1sd4u8Fgd50d6YI). Meanwhile, Shion is pretty much playing with Clayman as his attacks and spells do not affect her. Clayman finally transforms but even that’s not enough for him to defeat Shion (scenes here: https://youtu.be/VjGO9KS5_d0?si=2DF_4Gcm5IItZt-R and https://youtu.be/VymQI7wvfrQ?si=XHULBLYMe1CoyyBp. (Nitsuj): Damn. So does this mean Shion’s strength is on the same level as a demon lord?). Feeling his defeat at hand and desperate, he calls for Milim who reveals she’s not under his control, in fact, she was never under his control to begin with (scene here: https://youtu.be/PQ9nFdV9KMs?si=iZ4iArrxQ8YtPU8d, makes sense. She’s one of the strongest demon lords in the world. You really think something like mind control could work on her?). Milim was investigating Clayman who was working with someone behind the scenes to overturn the other demon lords.  We also see Carrion is still alive (Nitsuj: And was there in the most obvious disguise) and Frey was in the whole time. Shion chops up Clayman to leave him defenseless and the other demon lords get ready to pass judgement on him. As Clayman lies their on the ground humiliated and beaten we see that all this time he was working with Yuuki who wants to control this world (Nitsuj: Oh no, you’re a villain). Yuuki managed to convince Clayman to take part in his scheme by promising to bring back Kazalim a demon lord that Clayman served under in the past. Clayman refusing to accept his defeat and humiliation unleashes all the souls he absorbed and begins awakening to what I can only assume to be a true demon lord. Rimuru of course planned for this to happen and he gets ready to fight Clayman himself without anyone’s help.

In the final episode we start with Rimuru fighting Clayman. Rimuru easily wipes the floor with Clayman within the first 5 minutes of the episode (Nitsuj: And even then he’s clearly not going all out. Scene here: https://youtu.be/ymVBcepdG_E?si=eeKoe_FWWHpy9dvC). After Clayman’s defeat, Rimuru is officially recognized as a demon lord by everyone. After this, they talk about Kazalim and how there’s a possibility that he’s still alive in someone else’s body. Frey relinquishes her title of demon lord to serve under Milim (that’s going to be a full-time job). Carrion also decides to serve under Milim because he lost to her. He still intends to be the king of the animal kingdom but will rebuild it so that Milim is at the top (scene here: https://youtu.be/U7dXEv8zSHQ?si=0lSmb1lRTD158Nr7). With the group down to 8 demon lords they now have to decide on a new name and since this is all Rimuru’s fault, he gets the pleasure of choosing their new name (Nitsuj: No pressure). He decides on the name Octagram: The Eight-Star Demon Lords. With this everything wraps up and Rimuru and the others return home to everyone.

Final Thoughts

(Yume): And that was the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. How was it? Well in the first half of the anime we start off slow but pick up quickly near the end as we see Tempest get attacked, getting their revenge, Rimuru becoming a demon lord, and Veldora returning where he’s becoming a manga fan thanks to Rimuru.

(Nitsuj): The second half of the anime has the same problems as the first half. It starts off with a lot of talking building up the future confrontation between Tempest and Clayman’s forces, but when the action finally starts near the end things really do start to pick up and delivers us a fantastic story. While the build-up for each half was good I just wish it didn’t take so long. Especially in the second half.

(Yume): Other than that, the rest of the anime was great. The action was on point, it was nice seeing the other demon lords and setting up the future confrontation between Rimuru and Leon down the line. I like how the members of Tempest have received a huge power boost with some of them now on the level of demon lord. The new characters such as Hinata and Diablo are a welcomed addition. I’m looking forward to the rematch between her and Rimuru down the line and I find it funny how Diablo this powerful demon is so subservient to Rimuru that it’s almost on the same level of Asmodeus from Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun.

(Nitsuj): The animation and music are still good. I didn’t see any major improvements there, but to be fair it was already good to begin with so give them an A in consistency. One thing I will say is that the fights were pretty one-sided this season. I get why as we got to see how powerful everyone has gotten now that Rimuru is a demon lord, but I was hoping to see more of a struggle on their part.

Final Score

(Nitsuj): My final score for the second season of Reincarnated as a Slime is 8/10.

(Yume): I’m also giving it an 8/10. While we enjoyed the first season more this season was definitely great and well worth checking out if you liked the first season.

(Nitsuj): Like we said, the only real downside is that it stretches out a lot of the talking sections, but when the action does startup it delivers and brings each half of the season to a satisfying end. The story will of course be continuing and I look forward to seeing what new challenges Rimuru will face now that he’s a demon lord. Until then, thanks for reading and we’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
