Project #584: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2 Part 1

(Nitsuj): Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. As we continue to count the days to the new spring anime I give you one of the animes I’m most excited to see return Reincarnated as a Slime. Man, am I happy this anime return.

(Yume): You and me both. Hello everyone. It’s your foxy virtual girl Yume here. Thanks for having me.

(Nitsuj): At a time when people were getting tired of isekai, Reincarnated as a Slime came and restored people’s interest in the genre.

(Yume): The story was good, the characters interesting, and it was fun to watch. So when a second season was announced for 2020 people got excited. But then Covid happened, delaying everything, and the anime got pushed to the winter of 2021 much to the annoyance of everyone, but the good news was this anime was there to start the year off on a high note.

(Nitsuj): Was it as good as the first season? Let’s find out. This is Reincarnated as a Slime S2.

Opening and Ending Theme

(Yume): This season’s opening is “Storyteller” by TRUE. A decent opening but a bit of a step backward from the first two openings. The first two openings felt more personal and were sung better, this opening just feels a little generic. Like it was meant for an opening to a forgetful fantasy anime.

(Nitsuj): The ending is “Storyseeker” by Stereo Dive Foundation. While the opening left no impression the ending thankfully does. This was one of my favorite endings from 2021 for it’s them of love, beat, and just all-around great atmosphere. It’s a catchy song and leaves a good impact on you as the season goes on.

Episodes 1-4

(Yume): So the season starts with Rimuru still serving as a teacher with only 1 month before his immediate departure. However, he does make frequent visits back home to check up on everyone and make sure things are running along nicely (ruling a nation is no easy feat, but he makes it look easy). We see that Benimaru and a few others have been selected to serve as delegates for Tempest and are about to travel to Eurazania, the kingdom ruled by Carrion to improve their relationships. 5 days soon pass and the delegates of Euraznia arrive in tiger-drawn carriages (Nitsuj: Okay, that’s cool. I think they might be lightning tigers). The delegates are Albis, Suphia and Grucius the Beastketeers (Nitsuj: All for beasts and beasts for all). We see Suphia is the hotheaded type and isn’t all impressed that everyone follows the orders of a slime (a slime that could eat you if he felt like it, so I would watch your step) and this angers Shion who fights her where the two are evenly matched (scene here: https://youtu.be/v0OH5MgB9R8?si=TIxpLfD4OdEgmtYq). Youm also fights against Grucius where the two are also evenly matched.

In the opening moments of episode 2 Suphia and Shion continue to fight until Albis finally steps in and says enough (scene here: https://youtu.be/E29znW_V050?si=0aUglY1zof5U06A0). It turns out this was a test to measure the inhabitants of Tempest and they passed. From there the delegations went well on both sides as Euraznia agreed to share their agriculture techniques with them and Tempest showed them some of their modern appliances in using magic. Later on, Rimuru and a few others go to a delegation in Dwargon where they’ll be meeting with Gazel (scene here: https://youtu.be/zF693MioHeY?si=BQR6QaRAdl5CVwcP).

Not much really happens in episode 3. Rimuru meets with Gazel. He gives them some nice liquor, he gives a speech in front of Dwargon (Yume: Which Gazel did not like), and at night Rimuru goes to the elf cabaret with the goblins for a night of fun and drinks (scene here: https://youtu.be/5zWQBBQNnIE?si=Nf471QzR_E37sdoz. (Nitsuj): Invite me next time). Of course after leaving they get caught by Shion and Shuna (oh~ he’s dead) where Rimuru manages to use his cuteness to charm his way out of trouble (you can’t be mad at him, he’s cute), but he has to eat Shion’s food for one week straight as punishment (scene here: https://youtu.be/ZY_fRHQqKdo?si=BeJLxC22PJEI8MzO, ouch. I would have just accepted the beating).

Things start to pick up in episode 4. Youm and his men return with their newest ally, Myulan, a wizard who managed to beat Youm in a one-on-one fight. They introduce Myulan to everyone who are getting ready for the return of Rimuru. After his business in Dwargon was finished he returned to his students to give them his final exam and now he’ll be returning in just a few days (much to everyone’s delight. (Yume): Particularly, the females). As Youm shows Myulan around the town, we find out that she’s a spy of the demon lord Clayman, who was sent to see just how powerful and dangerous Rimuru’s little nation is (well I’m no military expert, but if they were to go to war I’m positive they could take down a kingdom or two with just the kijins). We get a funny moment where Gobta, Youm, and Grucius try to use Myulan’s magic in an attempt to beat Hakourou which fails miserably (scene here: https://youtu.be/LMbesU4rFig?si=txJbJBVux2BdCiw-) and then cut to the kingdom of Falmuth, a kingdom that Gazel isn’t too fond of and warns Rimuru to be wary of as their king is a greedy bastard (Translation: He’s asshole). The king and his most trusted advisors have noticed a decline in merchants thanks to the Tempest Federation and thanks to the new road system set up by the orcs, Falmuth’s finances aren’t too good either. Seeing the Tempest Federation as a threat to their well-being, the king and his advisors begin hatching a scheme to go to war with them and wipe them out (you guys have no idea what your getting yourselves into).

Episodes 5-8

(Nitsuj): Things start to look bad for the Tempest Federation in episode 5. First up, they find out about the Falmuth troops heading their way to wage war. Second, they receive a call from Albis asking if they can accept refugees because Euranzia is going to war with Milim (what the hell did she do?). As all of this is going on, we see three humans named Shogo, Kyoya, and Kiara in the federation about to stir up trouble. Just like Rimuru they also possess some powers and were summoned to this world by Falmuth. The only problem is they are selfish spoiled assholes who believe they’re better than everyone (Yume: They summoned the worst kinds of people to a fantasy word. What were they thinking?). Kiara accuses one of the goblins of touching her inappropriately, but nobody really believes her (Yume: It’s true, they know better) so she tries use her skills to kill them only to have them blocked by Shuna which scares Kiara as no one has ever stopped her powers before (that’s right bitch. These are not the monsters to mess with). Shogo takes on Shion (Yume: Kick his head off) in a fist fight where she’s obviously stronger and just when it seems like the members of Tempest have this all under control Myulan steps in. We find out that Myulan is a majin forced to follow Clayman because he stole her heart. He wants to fan out the flames of war and orders Myulan to create an anti-magic force field around the city which will weaken everyone. It’s a sad moment as she doesn’t want to do this and the fact that she’s starting to have feelings for Youm only makes this scene sadder. Myulan activates the force field weakening the members of Tempest and setting them up for a harsh attack.

Things look bad for Rimuru and the others in episode 6. In the nation of Tempest, the monsters are all weak thanks to the barrier and things get even worst when soldiers show up and attack them (scenes here: https://youtu.be/DrCnyrwwlJ8?si=99g32bOENsT_3h25 and https://youtu.be/XM2tZgPgCj8?si=WeNMMDkvdTk_5xDQ) oh this will not go unpunished). Rimuru has his own problems as he gets attacked by a holy knight named Hinata who traps him in a barrier separating him from Ranga. She was summoned to this world and believes that Rimuru is the one who killed Shizu. Rather than explain to her what really happened to Shizu, he just says he ate her only to add needless drama to the situation (Yume: Drama sells). We see Hinata’s sword attacks the spiritual body of Rimuru hurting him and throw in the fact that he’s in a barrier weakening him, his situation is very bad. As if that wasn’t bad she has the unique skill to absorb spirits and is reading through all of Rimuru’s attacks. With his back to the wall, Rimuru activates his gluttony skill just as Hinata lands the killing blow.

At the start of episode 7 Rimuru activates his gluttony which morphs his body into an abomination of every creature he’s consumed so far (he ugly). Hinata manages to defeat the monster Rimuru has become (scene here: https://youtu.be/iQwDaOykTvA?si=DMzmql5a5b7D7hZ1) and takes her leave only. . .she didn’t beat him. We find out that before Rimuru activated gluttony, he created a doppelganger of himself who did all the fighting while he retreated and stayed hidden (Yume: Completely tricking Hinata and making her look like a fool). Rimuru makes it back to Tempest and enters his city where he sees the gruesome fate that befell his people. Many citizens injured and many goblins dead (point me in the direction of Falmuth. I’ll slice their king’s head off and mount it on a pole for everyone to see). After hearing the report of what happened and even hearing from Myulan who offers her life up to pay for her crimes and confessing that she serves Clayman, Rimuru concludes that Falmuth and the Western Holy Church have been colluding with each other to take them down because they’re messing up trade routes and their existence is unacceptable by the church.

Nothing much happens in episode 8. Rimuru finds out that Shion is dead (scene here: https://youtu.be/jouwBIcVJZo?si=uiT4AdXuiZRRBZ56, now I really want to see Falmuth and the church destroyed). However, those three adventurers traveling with Shizu return and tell Rimuru there’s a chance he can resurrect everyone if he becomes a true demon lord (Yume: He rules over a nation of monsters and is a monster. Yeah, this really does seem like the way to go). In order to become a demon lord Rimuru will need to follow a few steps. First, the demon lord seed. Thankfully, he already has this item which he got after absorbing the orc disaster from last season (lucky~). After that, he needs to germinate the seed with 10,000 human souls and luck is on his side as the army of Falmuth and the church is approaching and they number 20,000 people (Yume: Gotta love that speedy delivery). Rimuru then turns his attention to Myulan where he kills her for like 3 seconds and brings her back with an artificial heart to break her out of Clayman’s control (scene here: https://youtu.be/fcgxzibFv2U?si=Vtdby4SZkZpywzMw). Now she’s free to be with Youm who she loves. Speaking of Youm, Rimuru wants him to be the next king of Falmuth (because after what happened these last few episodes Rimuru is going to kill their current king. (Yume): Make it as painful as possible) which he agrees to do.

Episodes 9-12

In the first half of episode 9 Rimuru tells everyone that he’s going to become a demon lord (and shockingly, this is a more compelling turn than when Anakin turned to the Dark Side in Star Wars. (Yume): Strong with the geeks, you are) and how he plans to devour 10,000 of the soldiers heading their way. He also tells them that he’s a reincarnated human from another world and they’re fine with that. To them Rimuru is still Rimuru and they’ll follow him no matter who or what he is. They all go on to accept the blame for what happened saying they relied on Rimuru too much and vow to get stronger so that this never happens again. After this, Rimuru establishes new rules when dealing with humans (Yume: If they buy you a drink, treat them with kindness. If they point a knife at you, feel free to kick their heads off) and goes on to say he’ll become a bridge between humans and monsters, by helping humans understand monsters and form a friendship with them. He’ll also keep a close eye on the other demon lords (particularly Clayman) and keep other kingdoms safe from them. Everyone likes Rimuru’s plan and prepares to go to war where they organize the strike teams, get into position, and get ready to strike.

Oh man, episode 10 is so satisfying to watch. The animation and sound effects are on point this episode and it’s so great to see the church and Falmuth get their comeuppance. So we see the warriors of Tempest easily take out the crystals generating the barrier around their town and killing anyone in their path with ease (scene here: https://youtu.be/SowQi4otqrQ?si=eAJ2M9YnArB3_D_C) . Hakurou takes on Kyoya and shows that boy just how second-rate, weak, and useless he is by decapitating him. The most satisfying part comes when Geld takes on Shogo where Geld manages to weaken him with his rot ability which seems to erode his body a little before he runs away and kills Kiara (Yume: She was a bitch. So, happy~) to heal up his body and gain a new ability which allows him to rapidly regenerate his body from injures, but even that’s not enough to save him from the beating Geld gives him on behalf of everyone in Tempest (https://youtu.be/hWJlh0B3dkg. Scene here: https://youtu.be/4-12EfpaU84?si=PYZcaSI2ft55ZlsK). Just when Geld has reduced Shogo to a whimpering child and is about to put him out of his misery, he gets saved by Razan, the chief sorcerer of Falmuth and the one responsible for summoning Shogo, Kiara, and Kyoya. He escapes with Shogo to the main camp and then destroys Shogo’s soul, so that he can put his soul into Shogo’s body. The soul transfer is a success and just in time because Rimuru has just launched his attack on the camp where he quickly kills over 5,000 people to end the episode (and give him credit, he’s making it as quick and painless as possible).

(Yume): At the start of episode 11 Rimuru continues to drop people left and right. He even takes out Razan (and he just got a new body) and shoots the arm off the king of Falmuth for being stupid and mouthing off to him (Nitsuj: Was he seriously trying to talk down to the slime that is decimating his army with no effort whatsoever? He really is stupid). Rimuru’s mass genocide earns him the merciless skill which allows him to kill anyone instantly who loses their will to live when facing him (and given what he’s done so far. I’d be on my knees begging for survival at this point). Rimuru uses this to kill the rest of the army (Nitsuj: I want that. (Reaper): Too bad, I already have it) and finally earns enough kills to begin the evolutionary process (Nitsuj: Rimuru is evolving). The process begins right away where Rimuru starts to fall asleep fast, but he has no intention of letting the king of Falmuth and the archbishop escape and has Ranga take them as well as himself back to Tempest. Before leaving, the Great Sage tells Rimuru that there’s another soul still alive in the vicinity, so he uses the soulless corpses of the knights to summon a demon and the demon (or demons in this case) that answer his call are Noir and his two subordinates who are greater demons to find the survivor and capture him alive (for those of you who don’t know who Noir is he’s a demon that Shizu met in one of the OVAs and a powerful one too. How powerful is he? His class is archdemon which is the second strongest class a demon can have. (Nitsuj): Holy shit, Rimuru summoned a badass creature on his first attempt). Ranga makes it back to Tempest with Rimuru, the king and archbishop as war prisoners and the evolutionary process commences with everyone watching. Back with Noir, we see that Razan is the sole survivor thanks to his healing factor (Nitsuj: Damn, he got a slime bullet to the head and healed himself. That’s some Wolverine level of healing right there), but Noir finds him and completely owns Razan where even Noir is amazed by his power that Rimuru gave him. Razan and his subordinates make it to Tempest where Rimuru has just finished evolving and everyone takes a power nap after receiving his gift which will only make them stronger. Rimuru (now sporting some red eyes) then moves on to resurrecting everyone where he gathers up all the souls/magicules of the dead using his new abilities however, there aren’t enough magicules to fully revive everyone. Luckily, Noir offers his subordinates as sacrifices to get the magicules they need to resurrect everyone (don’t they get a say in this? (Nitsuj): They’re sacrificing themselves for their master, so, no). Their magicules are enough and Rimuru is able to resurrect everyone as he passes out to rest (scene here: https://youtu.be/0PlRrGzroV0?si=B8U8SuTCF-NaRqm5).

For episode 12 Rimuru reawakens to see everyone who was killed was brought back to life. He can also see how everyone has changed (Nitsuj: Really? They all look the same) including the Great Sage who is now going by Rapahael thanks to Rimuru’s evolution. While everything seems to be good on Rimuru’s end, this cannot be said for Carrion. While Rimuru was sleeping, Milim declared war on Carrion and his citizens (Nitsuj: What the hell is she doing?). Making the safety of his citizens a priority, Carrion ordered his Beastketeers to evacuate the people to Tempest while he went to face Milim himself. During their fight, Milim destroyed Eurazania (shame, I would have liked to have seen that place) and Carrion is presumably dead as he was taken out from behind by Frey another demon lord working with Milim (Nitsuj: Just how many demon lords does this world have?). The Beastketeers believe Clayman is the one pulling the strings behind this attack and Rimuru agrees to help them out. Later on, Noir approaches Rimuru while he’s alone and offers his loyal servitude to Rimuru (who honestly forgot about him entirely. (Nitsuj): That’s cold Rimuru). Rimuru accepts and gives him the name Diablo which took up half of Rimuru’s magicules to name him, but he still remains conscious (Nitsuj: How is that possible?). You see, when Rimuru evolved into a demon lord his magicules vastly increased (like 10 times. (Nitsuj): Woah. So, the fact that it cost half of Rimuru’s magicules to name Diablo just goes to show how high class he is). Diablo finishes evolving (Nitsuj: Again, he looks the same to me) and Rimuru shares his worries about the future (scene here: https://youtu.be/veTYDanvxRM?si=FQ0wSmFOzsSUfREr). Not only does Rimuru have to deal with Clayman but he also has to deal with the aftermath of the war between Falmuth and the church who will no doubt retaliate and attack again because they’re monsters (he’s got 99 problems and these are the biggest). Raphael says he doesn’t need to worry about the church because the breaking of the seal on Veldora is completed (Nitsuj: Oh shoot, I forgot about him. That’s great). Once Veldora is free his presence should keep the western nations in check (which makes sense. It’s a powerful dragon. If the church can’t even defeat one slime then how can they hope to defeat a dragon? Especially one who is friends with said slime. (Nitsuj): And once he finds out what you did to his friend and his nation you better hope there’s land for you to live on when he’s done). This makes Rimuru happy and gives him hope that he can get through all of this (Nitsuj: You might just live through this after all). Rimuru heads off to the cave to bring Veldora back to life. He creates a copy of himself and transfers Veldora’s soul into it where he morphs the body to his liking (scene here: https://youtu.be/aKX0zwsNVIw?si=SouhJ3QgcgNLLVtw, I did not expect him to have golden hair. I thought it would be black).

(Nitsuj): And that was the first half of season 2.

(Yume): Tune in next week as we take a look at the second half of the season. Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
