Project #380: The Top 11 Comedy Anime

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. Today is a special day because today just so happens to be the birthday of our resident ninja wolf and pet Yin-Yang.

(Yin-Yang): Hi~! Hey! Who you calling a pet!?

(Nitsuj): In order to celebrate we’re letting her do a top 11 list of anything she wants and she’s chosen her favorite genre of anime, comedy.

(Yin-Yang): A lot goes into comedy. Timing, inflictions, the way it’s said, what you say, writing, randomness, suffering and so much more.

(Nitsuj): Throughout the years there has been a ton of anime that focus primary on comedy to get a good laugh and today we’re counting down the top 11 anime comedies and with everything going on in the world today I believe we could all use a good laugh to keep our spirits up. These are the animes that followed the basic ideas of comedy and made us laugh the most.

(Yin-Yang): With that said, it’s your wolf and the cub, Yin-Yang and Nitsuj. These are picks for the top 11 Anime Comedies.

#11. The Devil Is a Part-Timer

(Nitsuj): Often seen as an underrated anime, The Devil Is a Part-Timer is dipping in awkwardness and randomness that just keeps you laughing. A reverse isekai where Maou and his follower escape into our world with no powers and force to live the life of normal citizens with Maou becoming a part-timer in this anime’s version of McDonalds.

(Yin-Yang): Well everyone says they’re evil so why not go all the way with it?

(Nitsuj): As if the demon lord himself wasn’t silly enough, the hero also enters our world and hilarity ensures with these characters interacting off each other and trying to adapt to this new world. Each episode had me laughing the first time I watched it. The characters were great, their interactions off each other was natural and funny, and the setup was brilliant and executed perfectly. This is definitely an anime that satisfies your hunger for laughs.

#10. Ghost Stories (but only the dub)

(Yin-Yang): We say only the dub because the sub isn’t really all that funny. Based off a manga from the 80s, Ghost Story received subpar ratings in its home country of Japan. Fans just didn’t find the show all that entertaining. When the anime became licensed by ADV Films, their fortune would change for the better. At this point the studios behind the anime were just looking to make a profit, so they gave free reign to ADV Films to do whatever they wanted with the anime. With no restrictions and allowed to say whatever they want, Ghost Stories would quickly go on to be one of the craziest and most hilarious dubs of all time. Things said throughout this anime were hilarious and something that would not fly by today’s standards and that’s what makes it so funny. The dub got so popular that the studios behind the anime considered doing a second season just from how successful the dub was. The cast behind the dub didn’t care what anyone said, they just wanted to make this anime memorable and funny and that’s exactly what they did. In fact, it was even rumored that the VAs would race to the studio to see who could write the script for the next episode. Just looking up clips alone on Youtube is guaranteed to make you laugh for just how ridiculous the dub is and how they take this anime in a different direction from the sub. This dub truly embodied the spirit of Duckman’s speech about comedy and for that I applaud them.

#9. Ouran High Host Club

(Nitsuj): Yeah, I talked about this being one my most recommended anime for the first-time watchers of anime and a large reason for that is because of the comedy in this anime. The guys of the host club are just hilarious from their spoiled upbringing, crazy antics, hilarious facial expressions, and in the center of it all is a girl with common sense who has to keep her sanity around these spoiled nut bags. If I had to pick which version of the anime to watch I would honestly say watch the dub because of one person and one person alone, Vic Mignogna. He is the real life version of Tamaki and he just kills it with his performance as Tamaki. The way he delivers his lines is just perfect and brings the character of Tamaki to life. The rest of the cast is good but Vic just takes it to whole new level with his performance of Tamaki. Ouran High continues to be remembered fondly as one of the best dubs out there, one of the best animes out there, and owes a large chunk of its success to it’s comedic and fun writing.

#8. Grand Blue

(Yin-Yang): If you were to tell me I’d find an anime about diving funny, I think you were crazier than Shizuku. But lo and behold, we have an anime about diving and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Rather than have the anime take place in a high school setting, we instead have the anime take place in college setting where we get all sorts of adult humor, drinking shenanigans, and explores the carefree and insane people you meet in college. It’s really hard not to laugh your ass off when watching this anime just for how insane the characters are, their shenanigans, and the fact that they have titan faces whenever they get mad is enough to make anyone laugh. This was an anime that came and went, but it really needs to come back for a second season. I need my laughs. Speaking of another season.

#7.Baka and Test

(Yin-Yang): Let’s face it, being on the bottom on the school chain is never fun, but this anime somehow finds a way to make it fun. In a special school where grades mean everything this anime manages to show us that grades aren’t the end all be all thanks to its delightful cast of characters who are idiots but at the time good people trying to work through a system that favors grades over wits. This anime manages to have everything. Adult humor, clever writing, callbacks to other animes/games, visual humor, and of course suffering. This was definitely an anime that understood visual humor and suffering as they nail it perfectly in this anime. Baka and Test delivered the laughs in their first season and while the 2nd season was more geared towards the development of the characters, they still managed to keep the laughs coming with their scenarios, character interactions, and of course good old suffering. Baka and Test shows us that while being at the bottom of the school chain sucks you don’t have to go it alone and can still have fun while laughing your way to the top.

#6. Kore wa Zombie-desu

(Nitsuj): At the height of zombie-mania, Kore wa did to the zombie genre what Evangelion and Magical Madoka did to the mecha and magical girl genre. It deconstructed them and presented them in a new light. It showed us that not all zombie-related shows have to be dark and horrifying, they can be funny and poke fun at the supernatural. The whole anime is just mindless fun with our main character being a zombie who fights giant monsters while wearing a pink dress, a magical girl who’s a smartass, a busty vampire ninja, and a cute necromancer who rarely speaks. Everything about this show just says it should fail and yet it all works out in the end because of them going all the way with this idea. They all know it’s silly and nonsensical so why not embrace it and get a good laugh out of you. Just like Baka and Test the anime got two seasons, but it did the opposite of them. The first season of Kore wa was more focused on developing the characters while still getting a good laugh out of us, while the second season went all in on the laughs. If you like visual humor, watching others suffer, and want to go all the way in terms of nonsensical, this is the anime for you and I gladly welcome a third season.

#5. Galaxy Angel

(Nitsuj): Wait, seriously?

(Yin-Yang): Yeah, it’s hilarious. The story of 5 women traveling the universe while looking for lost technology was funny and wacky all at the same time. The history behind this series was that it was meant to advertise the game which was a dating sim game. Unfortunately, the game got delayed and people working on the anime didn’t have any material to work with aside from a few personality traits about the characters as well as designs. This was an easy to follow episodic anime that was just a joy to watch. If you’re having a bad day, I highly recommend checking out this anime to get a laugh just for the wackiness and story of the characters. The series was apparently a big hit as it had a number of seasons throughout the course of the early 2000s, side specials as well as a spin-off which focuses on a whole new cast of characters. While it may seem goofy by today’s standards, this was an anime that got comedy, had fun with its concept, and got everyone interested in the game when it finally came out.

#4. Space Dandy

(Nitsuj): Often considered Watanabe’s weakest anime but at time his funniest anime. This whole anime is like the modern-day male equivalent of Galaxy Angel. It’s whacky, hilarious, episodic, and just a fun watch. Dandy is a likable character and the situations he finds himself getting into are always hilarious and a joy to watch. The anime pays homage to all kinds of media properties such as E.T, X-Men, High School Musical, and many more. On top of that the animation is spot on in this anime and this is one of the few animes where I actually like the dub more than sub version. Dandy is a dandy guy in space and if this is Watanabe at his weakest than I think we have nothing to fear from this guy.

#3. Konosuba

(Nitsuj): Voted as the isekai of the decade and for good reason. At a time when isekai anime were starting to become repetitive, Konosuba managed to separate itself from the pack and present something new to the genre. Rather than have the main characters be righteous individuals who were the embodiment of good, they were idiots who had a good heart but would cause more harm than good. This change to the genre could have backfired but instead everyone who watched it got a kick out of it. The writing and the characters were just so good and fresh. The anime took shots at its own genre and made us realize that if we were to get isekai’d to another world, chances are we would be in a similar situation like Kazuma. Konosuba is easily the funniest isekai anime I’ve ever seen and changed the way we viewed the genre for the better.

#2. Gintama

(Nitsuj): Ahh~ yes, another anime I didn’t get that much into.

(Yin-Yang): And it’s a damn shame because you don’t know what you’re missing. Gintama is pretty much the kingpin of anime when it comes to comedy and parody. With over 300 episodes, Gintama has made millions of people all over the world laugh with it’s hilarious viewpoints, clever comedy, fun parodies, slapstick humor, and witty dialog. The anime just manages to have a little bit of everything in terms of comedy. Like I said before it’s like a watered-down version of South Park that makes fun of everyone and everything without going too far. We had fun with this anime because the author and the people involved in the making of the anime had fun with it and it shows. Whether you’re a fan of comedy anime or not, there’s no denying that if you watch this anime, you’re gonna walk away with a smile on your face from laughing so much.

And the number one anime comedy is. . .

#1. Full Metal Panic Fumoffu

(Nitsuj): With the first season of Full Metal Panic being a big hit it was only natural to make another season. The only problem is they were catching up to the light novel and wouldn’t have enough material for an anime.

(Yin-Yang): So they decided to make a filler series and instead of it just being a boring filler series, they would instead just focus on the school life of our two main characters where hilarity ensues.

(Nitsuj): Out of all the seasons of Full Metal Panic this season still remains to be my favorite season of the bunch. It decides to focus on comedy and have our main characters interact off each other and the many unique personalities and individuals at their school. The timing, dialogue, slapstick, and scenarios are all just perfect. Even after all these years I still find myself laughing at every episode.

(Yin-Yang): Me too. The comedy in this anime is just timeless and so memorable. You don’t even need to watch the first season of the anime to get the context of the anime. All you need to do is sit back, relax, and get ready to laugh your ass off because this anime is going to make you laugh and keep the laughs coming. This is an anime that’s hard to decide which version is funnier, but I would honestly recommend watching the dub version of the anime. The voices are a good match up with the characters, their lines are great as well as their delivery. Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is my all-time favorite comedy anime to this day and one that still makes me laugh whenever I watch it and you should too.

(Nitsuj): Well that’s our list. We hoped you enjoyed and got a good laugh out it.

(Yin-Yang): If we missed any animes, let us know in the comments below.

(Nitsuj): Happy birthday Yin-Yang, hope you had a good day.

(Yin-Yang): I did. Thanks for reading everyone and thanks for sharing this special day with me. I wish you guys nothing but smiles, laughs, and kunais.

(Nitsuj): Wait what?

*Yin-Yang takes out a kunai and stabs Nitsuj in the arm which sends a shockwave through his body*

(Nitsuj): AHHHHHHHHHH~!

*Nitsuj passes out on the floor*

(Yin-Yang): Always end on a laugh. We’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.
