Project #115: Campione

Hello and welcome to Project Nitsuj. In this world we have a lot of religions and mythological beliefs that people believe. So one has to wonder what would happen if these mythological beings were real and someone killed one of them. Well one guess is you would get Campione. Campione is an interesting story which ask the question what would happen if an ordinary boy killed a god and had a bunch of adventures? The series is a light novel written by Jō Taketsuki 2008 and still continuing to this day. The story is relatively good and interesting for the fact that it doesn’t restrict itself to Japanese mythology but instead explores all mythologies such as Greek, Indian, and other mythologies from around the world. In 2012 the anime studio Diomedéa (Mondaiji) took the series and turned it into an anime. Let’s go god slaying and take a look at Campione.

Opening and Ending Theme

The opening is “Brave Blade!” by Megu Sakuragawa. It’s a pretty badass song. The instrumental is cool and loud but the only downside is it’s too loud and drowns out the singer Megu throughout the song. I can barely hear her. I can’t blame the music this time even though it’s loud it’s not too loud so the fault lies in Megu for not singing loud enough. The ending is “Raise” by Yui Ogura. I’m not really sure what to say about this ending. It’s not bad but at the same time I don’t seem to like it all that much. The singer is good and it sounds but I’m getting no feelings from it. I guess what I’m trying to say is it sounds like a generic ending song to me. There’s nothing in it that makes the song bad but at the same there’s nothing in it that makes song really stand out.

Episodes 1-4

So the anime begins in Italy (well this is a nice change of pace) where our main character Godou voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito from SAO) is returning a stone tablet for his grandpa to an acquaintance of his named Lucretia. As he wonders the streets of Italy he runs into a beautiful blonde Italian woman named Erica who consequently speaks fluent Japanese (what are the odds?) and is a mage knight whose purpose is to protect the world from heretic gods. She’s voiced by Yoko Hikasa (Rias from Highschool DxD). Erica pulls out a knife demanding that Godou hand over the tablet saying that it’s an ancient grimoire that contains the powers of Prometheus (oh crap not that movie again). But before she can get the stone a heretic god in the form of a giant warthog begins destroying the city with Godou surprisingly remaining calm through all of this (Godou: I’m from Japan, we see these kinds of things all the time). Erica along with her maid Adrianna goes to stop to warthog while Godou runs into Verethragna the ancient Persian warlord and god of light who loves fighting other gods and taking their power. He gives Godou one of his powers which is a godly horse (for no apparent reason) and takes his leave (that’s gonna come back to haunt him isn’t it?). Erica tries fighting the warthog but she’s no match for it and gets saved by Godou where the warthog disappears (and not single human was killed in the attack). Erica explains to Godou that only people with magic abilities can see gods and to normal humans they just appear as acts of natures like hurricanes, floods, storms, and she even says in some rare cases the gods are responsible for wars happening in the world (so in the end it’s not our fault, good to know). Erica and Adrianna help Godou deliver the grimoire to Lucretia a witch who is said to be as old as Godou’s grandpa but because of her high level of magic is able to maintain the appearance of a woman in her 20s (and that my friends is what we like to call a WILF). Godou hands the tablet over to her but she gives it back to him saying she doesn’t want it. That night Erica gets drunk (scene here: //youtu.be/zJnFnWjj2YU, geez these girls are weird drunks) and forces Godou to undress her (don’t do it Godou, while I admit she has a nice body it’s not right to do it with a drunk girl). The next morning the god Melqart god of sea according to Phoenician mythology appears on the island to fight Verethragna. Godou and Erica go to their fight where Erica tries to stop them but she gets tossed aside (know thy place woman). Godou saves her (okay why is the weak human saving the one with superpowers, it’s usually the other way around?) and forms a pact with Melqart to take down Verethragna together (and Godou just manned up big time in this anime). Using the power of the grimoire Godou unleashes Verethragna’s horse incarnation on him (I knew it would come back to haunt him) to steal his golden sword which has the power to cut through divinity and reduce a god to a mere human (okay that has to be the most OP sword ever). However, in order to use it he must have an extensive knowledge of the god he’s fighting which he doesn’t but Erica does and the only way to transfer all that knowledge to him is through a kiss (nice power-up). With that kiss Godou is able to use the sword and defeats Verethragna thus inheriting his other incarnations and powers (so you went on an errand for your grandpa where you met a hot blonde, kissed her, killed a god, and inherited his powers. Best fucking day ever).

Episode 2 starts off with Godou meeting Pandora a demigod who tells Godou he has killed Verethragna and has inherited the title of campione a king of the world who has slayed a god and inherited his powers (man Godou’s life keeps getting better and better). We find out that a week has passed since he defeated Verethragna and has returned to Japan with Erica becoming his personal knight who has the hots for him and occasionally sneaks into his bed to sleep with him naked (uhh~ did I skip an episode? When did all this stuff happen?). We also meet Godou’s little Shizuka a strong-willed girl who’s suspicious of her brother’s actions and doesn’t know that he’s a campione (but she does recognize that her brother is becoming a lady-killer). At school Erica transfers to his class and tells everyone that Godou is her property (are you trying to get the man killed?) which forces him to run out of the classroom to escape his classmates where accidently bumps into a girl by the name of Yuri with him a shy girl who is seen as the elegant princess of the school. Yuri, voiced by Kana Hanazawa (Marie from Persona 4 Golden the animation) is a Princess shrine maiden who works with The Committee for the Compilation of True History, a magic organization based in Japan that handles all the magic incidents that happen in the country. After school she brings Godou back to her shrine where he meets Amakasu a representative of the committee who tells Godou that Erica might have been sent by her organization to seduce Godou and bring him to their side (an effective plan if you ask me). While he doesn’t fully believe them he does think they’re on the right track seeing as how they only knew each other for a day and a half, didn’t really get along, and then as soon as he became a campione suddenly she wants to get inside his pants (so yeah the whole seduction plan might not be too far-fetched). The next day Erica takes Godou back to Italy where they have a duel to display Godou’s power to the representatives of Italy’s magic committee where we see the various powers of his incarnations such as having great speed, power, and the ability to summon a large boar to crush the famous Roman Coliseum (what is this Rampage: World Tour?). We also find out that he can only use the incarnations once a day so when he uses one he can’t use it until the next day comes. In the end Godou is able to tackle Erica to the ground (in a very suggestive way mind you) and make her surrender where she tells Godou that she’s acting on her own, there’s no hidden motive in her acts, and that she really has fallen for Godou (yep, you’ve only known him for a day and a half and yet you’ve fallen for him). The representatives are impressed with Godou’s powers and entrust him with an important artifact for a threat that will come in the near future (could be at the end or it could be next episode).

In episode 3 we find out that the artifact Godou received last episode is actually the Gorgoneion a divine coin that contains the powers of Athena who wants it to destroy the world and pull it into the underworld as a part of the this end of the world prophecy (damn Godou haven’t been campione for one month and already you’ve doomed the world). After Yuri heavily scolds Godou for bringing disaster to Japan (I’m surprise she’s not used to this. You guys have a disaster like every other day), he gives the stone to Yuri for her to seal while he and Erica distract Athena. The two find Athena who in this universe is a loli who looks a lot like Koneko from Highschool DxD hell she’s even emotionless like Koneko (//img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120725003415/campione/es/images/2/27/Atenea_perfil.png//fav.me/d6ln1u1 the resemblance is really uncanny). Godou tries to plead with her saying he doesn’t want to fight her but she refuses to listen and gives him the kiss of death (oh you pervert Godou! Kissing a loli. God-slayer or no god-slayer I am calling the cops). Erica fights Athena where this time she actually manages to wound a god (about time, I was starting to question her skills) and escapes with Godou where thanks to one of his powers Godou revives in 2 ½ hours (extra life FTW). Erica tells him that he has no choice but to fight Athena and in order to do that he needs his golden sword which means he needs knowledge about Athena which means he needs to kiss Erica who knows all about Athena (so she communicates her knowledge through kissing. Hmm~. Hey Mira. (Mira): Yes master. (Nitsuj): You consider yourself a math wiz right? (Mira): Well I don’t know about wiz but yes I do pretty much own at math. Why do you ask? (Nitsuj): Because *grabs Mira and pulls her close* I’m gonna need some of that knowledge in the future *Nitsuj gives Mira a deep kiss*. Hmm~, I don’t feel anything different *Mira slaps Nitsuj to the ground*. (Mira): *blushing* Wh-What the hell are doing!? (Nitsuj): I was trying to gain knowledge by kissing you. Maybe the kiss wasn’t deep enough, let me try again. (Mira): Fuck you *Mira takes out her electric whip and begins attacking Nitsuj*! (Nitsuj): Stop! Stop! I’m sorry it’ll never again. I was trying to use it as a form of communication. (Mira): Whipping your ass is my way of communicate anger *Mira continues to whip Nitsuj a few more times until she finally stops and leaves the room still angry and embarrassed*).

In. . .episode 5 I mean 4 Athena makes the sky dark and starless like Mr. Popo from Dragonball Z looking for the Gorgoneion. Yuri is unable to seal it so now she’s a sitting duck for Athena who has found her, gotten the Gorgoneion and has upgraded from loli to beautiful young lady (I liked her better as a loli). Godou and Erica reach Yuri just in time to fight Athena where Godou takes out his golden sword (which we fans like to call the golden banana sword) and uses his words and knowledge of Athena to take away her divinity and reduce her to a mere human (knowledge is power). Even though Godou managed to take away her divinity Athena is still pretty strong thus Godou uses another one of his powers to summon a flaming horse to attack Athena and while she’s defending herself against the horse Godou uses Erica’s spear to pierce through the chest of Athena which defeats and reverts her back to her loli form (yay) but doesn’t kill her (finish her). Rather than kill her and absorb her powers (you know the logical thing to do) he instead tells her to leave his country and she escapes. Thus, Japan avoids another world ending crisis (tomorrow, they’ll be attacked by mutant alien octopuses from the moon).

Episodes 5-9

Not really a whole lot happens in episode 5. At school Erica and Yuri get into a baseball battle where Godou gets hurt (scene here: //youtu.be/f68ETugPkvk, headshot and crotch shot how much can one man take?). After school Erica has Godou go with Yuri to buy a cellphone saying she needs one and that it will allow her to stay in contact with Godou (how does a girl live in the 21st century and not have a cellphone?). This whole situation is a part of Erica’s plan to have Godou capture Yuri’s heart saying that having her sixth sense (*Chibi Isis comes in holding 6 pennies* (Nitsuj): I said sense not cents) will be a valuable asset for him in the future however she’ll allow Godou to have one lover and no more (than I got bad news for you lady). After Godou helps Yuri get a cellphone he returns home where he receives a call from Salvatore Doni (who the hell are you?). Okay, so Salvatore is another campione who Godou fought in the past to measure his skills and apparently lost to but Salvatore considers Godou to be his rival and best buddy (the bromance is strong with this one). That’s cool and everything but where the hell did he come from? This is the first time we’ve ever seen the guy or heard of him and no he doesn’t make an appearance in the previous episodes, this is literally our first time seeing and hearing about him. From what I gather Godou fought him sometime between episodes 1 and 2. How ridiculous is that, introducing a character out of the blue without any lead in or anything? Imagine if I did that on my show it be- (???): Hee-hoo. (???): Yoo-hoo. (Nitsuj): Hey~ Jack Frost and Pyro Jack what’s up. Everyone, these are my new neighbors and good friends Jack Frost and Pyro Jack the Jack Brothers or the Brother Jacks as I like to call them. They moved next door about mid-November and gave me the idea for Persona-mas. Say hi to the readers guys. (Jack Frost): Hi guys, he’s Pyro Jack. (Pyro Jack): And he’s Jack Frost. (Jack Frost and Pyro Jack): And together we’re the Jack Brothers. (Pyro Jack): You’re lovable mascots of Atlus. (Jack Frost): And comedy duo here to make you laugh. We’ll be stopping by every now and then to help our good buddy Nitsuj out on his blogs so look forward to seeing us. (Nitsuj): Alright good introduction guys. You guys need anything. (Pyro Jack): Yeah I was wondering if you had any candles my lantern is running low here. (Nitsuj): Check the cabinet in the kitchen there should be some there. (Pyro Jack): Thanks. We’ll let you get back to reviewing. See ya. (Jack Frost): Nice meeting you guys *Jack Frost and Pyro Jack leave the room*. (Nitsuj): Okay, back to the review. Salvatore tells Godou that another campione named Sasha Dejanstahl Voban an old codger is in Japan and he wants Godou to fight him so that he’ll become stronger (or die in the process). Godou says no and hangs up on him but little does Godou know Yuri has been kidnapped by her childhood friend Liliana voiced by Eri Kitamura (Saya from H.O.T.D) another knight mage who works for an organization that often competes against Erica’s. Liliana is working for Voban who wants to use Yuri to summon a rogue god and she tells her that she is now his servant (geez conceited much Voban?).

In episode 6 with the help of Amakatsu, Godou and Erica find where Voban is located and raid is place where we see that he can command the dead and has an army of dire wolves at his disposal (you know what dire wolf is right? Is like a wolf, only dire). They make it to Voban where they work out a deal to have a contest between the two campiones. Voban will let Yuri go and hunt Godou saying that if Godou can survive until sunrise he’ll admit defeat and give up on summoning a rogue god (and if Godou loses you can have his harem). He lets Yuri go with them and gives Godou a 30 minute head start (again you are a conceited bastard you know that?) and after 30 minutes (which was like only 2 minutes in anime time) he releases the wolves on them (careful, those things can rip your anus apart) but Erica defeats all of them with ease. Voban shows up and transforms into a wolf himself where he absorbs the fire of Godou’s horse (oh that is hardcore. But it’s also not good for us). Godou realizing he doesn’t know that much about Voban’s powers, the group decides to leave and regroup to end the episode.

Episode 7 opens up with Erica crossing blades with Liliana in the rain (huh, usually I have to be drunk to see something as hot and action packed as this) where they call a truce after Erica threatens to reveal Liliana’s dirty secret. She’s a romantic novelist (now that is unexpected). Using her sixth sense Yuri sees a vision that reveals that Voban’s wolf form is related to the Greece god Apollo. This information is all he needs to use his golden banana sword to slice through Voban’s wolf form and nullify it (you know I’m sure silver would have been more effective). Godou may have nullified Voban’s wolf form but he still has his army of the dead at his disposal (so Voban will be responsible for the zombie apocalypse). Using her sixth sense again Yuri finds a connection between the wolves and army of the dead and transfers her knowledge to Godou by finally kissing him not once but three times (man she went to the buffet once, came back for seconds, and came back for thirds. That girl loves her some Godou) and he uses that knowledge to re-forge the sword and nullify Voban’s army of the dead. But this doesn’t stop Voban as he has an ace up his sleeve in the form of three weather deities (guy just has an answer for everything doesn’t he?). He begins shooting lightning at Godou (which is kind of ironic because Voban does resemble the Emperor from Star Wars a little) and Godou unleashes the Goat his new avatar which takes the powers from everyone on the field, absorbs lightning attacks and gives it to Godou. Even the army of the dead sides with Godou and gives their powers to him (man Voban must be one hell of a bastard to have even the army of the dead turn on him). With all this power Godou fires his own lightning bolt at Voban which crushes him and destroys the Tokyo Tower in the process but Voban still gets back up (this old man won’t die will he?) and is ready for round 3 but the sun has risen and his time is up (saved by the sun). Voban accepts his defeat and leaves and Godou receives a kiss from a jealous Erica (you wanna get in on this too Liliana?).

It’s vacation time in episode 8 as Erica has tricked Godou into a romantic getaway to Italy with Yuri coming with them to keep an eye on Godou and make sure he behaves (you just wanna make sure he doesn’t hit on other girls you hypocrite). So we go to Italy where we get a little fanservice on the beach (grazie) and see that Liliana is searching for Salvatore who has escaped her sights and releases a divine beast on the land (man these campiones are reckless people). While that’s going on Godou sneaks out at night to escape Erica and the others (you have 2 hot girls and a WILF who want to sleep with you and you run away. Hand over what little balls you have now). As he’s escaping he runs into Athena (the loli is back) who rather than fight him puts him on a boat and they sail to the divine beast which is an earth dragon being attacked by Perseus which is bad because if the dragon dies it could affect the land greatly. Athena absorbs the dragon (what is she Kirby?) and takes her leave leaving Godou and and Liliana to fight Perseus who has taken an interest in Godou (you lazy god, come back here and fight). Liliana grabs Godou and they escape by flying away but Perseus follows them giving Godou no choice but to fight. Godou fights Perseus where somehow Perseus seals Godou’s powers and gives him an arrow to the heart (I once used to be a campione, until I took an arrow to the heart).

So in episode 9 Godou dies again but Perseus senses that Godou will come back so he prepares another arrow but before he can Athena shows up to save Godou telling Perseus that Godou is her prey and she won’t have anyone kill him other than her (translation his dick is my property so stay away from him). Perseus takes his leave and Liliana gets Godou to Bronze Cross headquarters in Naples where he revives himself (such a convenient power). We then meet Liliana’s maid Karen a classic devilish troll character who quickly picks up that Liliana likes Godou but is too afraid and shy to confess and convinces Liliana to make Godou fall for her so that he’ll join her organization. At first this plan works as Karen is able to convince Lilianna but it fails once Godou finds Lilianna’s dairy and reads her silly romance stories. As Lilianna is panicking Athena comes to say she’ll help Godou out but she demands something in return (I don’t care if you are a god, I will not condone the violation of lolis in my blogs). Lilianna refuses to accept this deal so the two return back to Bronze Cross where they begin researching Perseus and Lilianna begins having all kinds of crazy illusions of her and Godou getting together and doing erotic things (man Lilianna is an ecchi girl). Coming to a dead end in their research Lilianna decides to accept Athena’s help but rather than have Godou make the promise she instead does it instead. She drugs Godou’s tea and goes to make the deal where Athena begins to undress her (man Athena is kinky. Are all Italian women horny and I just haven’t heard about it yet). Godou comes in to stop her (spoiled sport) and tells her it’s best give him the information and beat Perseus or she’ll have to face Perseus herself. Persuaded by this she finally gives them the information they need and takes her leave. Just as she leaves Perseus sends a message via arrow (have you ever heard of texting Perseus it’s quite a human advancement in communication) telling him it’s time to fight (fight night mofo). As for Erica and Yuri they’re stuck on an island with the others with no way to leave (just get in a rowboat and row to Naples. Hell, you could swim there in the worst case scenario) and they can’t contact Godou because Salvatore used his powers to cut off modern day devices and ties the girls up so they won’t interfere with Godou’s fight.

Episodes 10-13

The fight between Godou and Perseus begins in episode 10 where Lilianna finally accepts Godou as the person she loves and wants to serve and gives him the most intense kiss in the anime so far (and the amazing part is it’s Godou who goes to town on her and not the other way around. He practically stormed that buffet leaving nothing for anyone to follow). He then takes out his golden banana sword to reveal that Perseus’ real name is Mithrus the master of Verethragna which explains why Godou’s power were sealed by Perseus in the previous fight. He goes on to reveal that the Romans made a mistake and thought that the sun god of Persia and the Greek hero Perseus were the same god //youtu.be/2-WPlvZguZ4, hey I’m saying what they’re saying don’t look at me). With this information he’s able to destroy Perseus’ bow and arrow but the fight continues where Perseus’ uses his powers to bring Lilianna under his control and have her fight Godou (oh you weakling). Godou manages to snap her out of it by calling out her name (Lilianna Lilianna LILIANNNA) and she uses her bow and arrow to pierce Perseus’ shoulder (how do you like it?), Godou super kicks his shoulder pinning him to a stone pillar, and summons his boar to crush Perseus. Perseus manages to escape in the nick of time but he gets attacked by a serpent and eaten whole (the only thing left of him was a hand). In the end Godou earns praise from Athena and Lilianna becomes his loyal knight (so he goes on vacation, gets abducted by a god, has to fight another god, gets killed by said god, revives, defeats said god who kills him, and gets another girl in the end. This was a great vacation).

In episode 11 we meet the final heroine of the season (oh there’s more girls in the future trust me on that) Ena voiced by Yuka Saitou a friend of Yuri who’s also the strongest of Japan’s Hime-Mikos. She’s here to join Godou’s harem and take the number one spot in the harem to make Godou favor Japan over Italy (it’s always about power in this anime). She goes to school and confronts Godou in the tea ceremony club where she asks what Godou’s relationship is with everyone else and he stupidly calls all of them friends (wow! He is an idiot, he just friendzoned 3 hot girls like it was nothing). Ena than forces Yuri to confront her feelings about Godou but before she can talk Lilianna and Erica appear to stop all of this and Erica and Ena go off to have a private talk with each other. The next day Erica asks Godou out on a date and they go where he has planned nothing for them to do (okay you don’t deserve a harem you son of a bitch) but Godou recovers and shows her a good time. At the end of their date Ena shows up to fight Erica because they made plans to fight today to decide who Godou’s number 1 wife is and since Erica sees Ena as a threat to her she has to eliminate her. So the sword fight between the two begins with Godou watching from the sideline where we see that Ena has a very powerful sword called Ama no Murakumo no Tsurugi a divine sword forged by Ena’s grandpa the legendary Susanoo and is so powerful that it can destroy a god or campione once it’s powers are fully unleashed. Godou steps in to stop the fighting and gets pulled to the astral realm by Susanoo who wants to meet him (looks like grandpa wants to have a few words with Godou about dating his granddaughter). Erica follows after him and we end the episode with Athena crashing into Godou’s house right in front of Shizuka.

In episode 12 Godou arrives in the astral plane where he meets Susanoo a retired rogue god who trained and raised Ena himself and gave her that dangerous sword (parent of the year right here folks). While those two are talking Ena and Erica continue their fight where Erica is at disadvantage because humans were meant to live in the astral plane so their bodies will grow weaker until they eventually die. Back in the real world Yuri and Lilianna find out that Godou and Erica are in the astral plane and try to get them out before it’s too late because strange things are happening in the world like the sky going dark everywhere. Athena has amnesia thus making her act all cute and innocent like with the only thing she remembers being Godou giving Shizuka the wrong ideas (you know, like Godou might have possibly slept with the loli goddess). Back in the astral plane Ena’s sword has possessed her body and is trying to kill Erica but Godou comes in to save her and forces Ama to retreat. Godou tries hard to teleport him and Erica out of the astral but he has no luck and Erica slowly begins to die (she’ll be reborn as a hot red-haired big-breasted devil). She tells Godou once again that she truly loves him and Godou not wanting to accept her death unlocks the last of his authorities which allows him to give his divine protection to whoever he wants through kissing. This leads to possibly the raunchiest kissing scene in the history of anime. I mean it, this scene is really raunchy like it almost puts hentais to shame. I honestly think the author of this series meant for this to be a sex scene but at the last minute he got scared and just turned it into an intense kiss scene between the two characters. After that. . .well let’s not kid ourselves sex scene, Erica returns to normal and the two lay on the beach only to be interrupted by Ama who has consumed Ena and turned her into a giant rock-like golem monster (I don’t know you try describing this thing: //media.animevice.com/uploads/1/18405/579076-ena_s_avatar.png). Godou rescues Ena from Ama but before they can continue their fight they all get pulled out of the astral plane and back into the real world by Athena who absorbs Ama completely shocking everyone. But you know what’s even more shocking? There’s actually two Athena’s in front of the group (okay, this anime has room for only one loli character so one of you has to go).

We start the final episode by finding out that the Athena who absorbed Ama is actually Metis, Zeus’ first wife and Athena’s mother. Yeah, remember that world prophecy from episode 3 that everyone was scared about? That was a false alarm, this is the prophecy they were talking about all this time (in other words these idiots fought the wrong god). Metis intends to consume the whole world but in order to do that she needs to absorb Athena who has lost her memories as well as her powers making her just an average child. Erica tells Godou to take Athena and leave until he can regain his powers while she and the others fight Metis (don’t trust the Metis touch). Adrianna and Amakatsu show up to take Godou and Athena to a shrine near Mt. Fuji which will hide their presence until Godou regains his powers. Metis manages to defeat the girls and find Godou with ease (a mother will always find their child). Godou tries to fight her but his powers have no effect on her and she manages to absorb Athena regaining her true form (or more like recycled form from episode 4 only this time in black clothing). The girls show up where he receives a kiss from all of them and using their knowledge and power they get Ama back and free Athena from Metis where Athena regains her memories, kisses Godou as well (man he’s getting around today isn’t he?), and they use their powers to defeat Metis. Athena absorbs Metis and takes her leave promising to return once again (oh just join the harem already, you know you want to).

Final Thoughts

This was a good anime. The story is pretty good, the idea of killing a god and absorbing their powers is an interesting concept well executed here. I like how the show doesn’t stick to one country’s myths but instead takes a look at other myths and explores them. The characters are pretty good. Godou is that typical harem MC character but he’s a little better than Ichika he actually does recognize a few of the feelings of the girls and I do like how he’s not afraid to jump into a fight to protect others despite being a pacifist and I like how he’s not all about strength he’ll actually use his mind to fight and come up with strategies while relying on others to help him achieve his victory. The girls were the best characters in the anime. I like how they each approach and interact with Godou differently like Erica is more straight-forward and will flirt with Godou in front of everyone not caring what they think and won’t hide her feelings for him. She loves him and she’s letting everyone know that Godou belongs to her. Yuri is more of the shy type who lives a sheltered life so she’s not sure how to really interact with boys thus will use the excuse to properly train Godou to get close to him and develop a relationship with him. Lilianna was my favorite girl she’s so adorable with her novels and tsundere personality. I like how she acts all professional and honor-bound but in truth she’s just like the others and wants Godou to look at her as much as the others. Ena was the weakest of the girls because we really don’t get a chance to explore her but from what we can see she’s rather laidback and has somewhat of a prejudice outlook on foreigners but you can tell she really does like Godou and sees him for who he truly is. Even Athena seems to have fallen for him a little.

Animation is pretty standard but the 3-D magic effects are awesome to look at. Probably the best feature of this anime is its amazing soundtrack. Very well done, top-notched, that fits the anime and the scenes perfectly. I highly recommend going online and checking it out. Action is okay I wouldn’t necessarily call it bad though it does tend to be one-sided most of the time and I would have liked to see Godou win his fights without having to rely on the golden banana sword all of time. While it’s a cool power and his ace in the hole I think it would have been better to show that he doesn’t need that power to win all of his matches. Fanservice is surprisingly balanced out well and tamed well. There are a few ecchi scenes here and there but they’re very well managed and don’t go too over the top. Most of them are pretty much you’re typical bath scene, wake up naked scene, you know just small fanservice stuff. My only problems with the anime are that they do skip a lot of the stuff at the beginning and just throw us into Godou being a campione without showing us his struggles to master his powers, lessons, teachings, and fights. Another thing that was a problem was a lot of the information on the gods is made up for the benefit of the situation so it’s best to do a little research on the gods and not take everything that the anime tells you about them to be true.

Final Score

The final score for Campione is a 7/10. This is a good anime and why it doesn’t have a season two yet is beyond me. The story is interesting, good characters with a good harem, awesome music, and decent fight scenes. If you haven’t checked this anime out and ever wondered what it would be like for humans to face myths and legendary people/gods or wanna see a good harem anime than check this anime out. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time on Project Nitsuj.

*Nitsuj gets up and walks to the kitchen to get a drink where Mira is drinking some tea and reading a book*

(Nitsuj): Hey Mira, you’re not still mad about the whole kissing thing are you?

(Mira): I was, but instead of just sitting here staying mad at you I decided to think of a suitable way to punish you and I found the perfect punishment. An anime for you to review next week.

(Nitsuj): Oh please what anime could you possibly give me that would make me suffer.

*Pulls up the list and sees Maken-Ki 2 is on it*

(Nitsuj): UHHHHHHHHH~!

(Mira): Enjoy your suffering you kissing bastard!
